MONTREAL— Police have arrested the third and final suspect in a shocking assault on a city bus driver, as a 20-year-old was apprehended at his apartment in Montreal North at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Daniel Quiroz-Rivas will face charges of aggravated assault and breach of conditions Friday at the Montreal courthouse.

The other two suspects were formally charged with assault Thursday, one at Montreal courthouse, the other at youth court.

Jeffrey St-Cloud, 20, faces assault charges in connection with the beating of a Montreal bus driver. One fellow suspect is still on the lam, while another is being charged as a minor. (Photo: Police handout)

These three men are suspected of attacking an STM bus driver on Saint-Laurent at Jean-Talon.

Jeffrey St-Cloud, 20, testified briefly in the presence of several family members while being charged with assault. He will remain incarcerated at least until his bail hearing Friday.

A fellow suspect, who cannot be named because he is a minor, appeared at youth court on similar charges.

The first two were arrested Wednesday evening, after an early morning incident at the corner of St-Laurent Blvd. and Jean-Talon St. The incident started as a verbal altercation but soon led to a vicious assault on a 36-year-old bus driver, who is currently in stable condition.

The exact nature of the argument remains unknown. A bus surveillance video released by transit authorities appears to show the three men taking turns spitting at the driver, but no other assault was shown in the video.

The driver suffered serious head injuries and was kept in an induced coma for over a day.

The incident took place around 2:30 a.m. as the 363 night bus approached the northern end of Little Italy.

“We don’t have all the details about the argument but it was a night bus and there are clubs on St-Laurent. Was alcohol an issue? No one knows, but there was no reason to attack a bus driver or anybody else,” said Tommy Mouhteros from the STM’s drivers’ union.

According to Mouhteros, this type of serious physical assault hasn’t occurred in years. Drivers, however, are frequently subjected to significant verbal assault and harassment, such as spitting, from patrons.

“This came out of nowhere. If there’s a problem on an STM bus, make a complaint. There’s no reason to attack someone,” he said, adding that night bus routes can be particularly challenging. He said they do their best to ensure drivers are secure.

“We’ve got surveillance on the buses, we have cameras, we have the panic button that goes directly to central and central calls the police right away,” he said.

Surveillance tape proves effective

Montreal police released a surveillance video in hopes that it would help track down the suspects. The strategy quickly bore fruit as hours later, a 17-year-old man and a 20-year-old were under arrest.

“The investigation is proceeding quickly, very quickly,” said Const. Simon Delorme.

One of the men turned himself in at a police station. The other man was arrested thanks to tips from the public.

TORONTO — A Toronto man charged with plotting to derail a VIA Rail train fled to Canada from Germany after his family was “terrorized” by anti-immigrant groups there, according to federal refugee documents.

Before arriving in Canada, Raed Jaser and his family spent two years in Berlin, where a Molotov cocktail was thrown at their home. The incident “terrorized his entire family,” their lawyer argued during their refugee proceedings.

Worried about their children’s future amid Germany’s “racial problems,” the Jasers left for Canada in 1993 using false French passports bought from a Turkish man, they told the Immigration & Refugee Board (IRB). They claimed refugee status when they arrived in Toronto.

Twenty years later, the eldest son, Raed Jaser, 35, is under arrest, accused of plotting to terrorize the Canadians who gave his family a second chance. He was arrested Monday for conspiring with Chiheb Esseghaier to attack a train on the New York-Toronto route.

Speaking to the Commons finance committee for the last time before his departure for London in June, Carney said the intent of the program is that it be used primarily to fill needs for high-skilled jobs temporarily, until businesses can train Canadians to take over.

OTTAWA — Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney says the controversial temporary foreign workers program should not be used to drive wages down or to fill lower-skilled jobs.

Speaking to the Commons finance committee for the last time before his departure for London in June, Carney said the intent of the program is that it be used primarily to fill needs for high-skilled jobs temporarily, until businesses can train Canadians to take over.

In a two-hour appearance Tuesday, Carney used the occasion to touch on a number of politically sensitive subjects, including the government’s move to increase tariffs on imports from 72 countries, the labour market, the Canada-U.S. price gap, and the contentious foreign workers program.

The latter issue became a hot potato for the government after news broke that an outsourcing company doing work for the Royal Bank had brought in foreign workers to do work that had been done by about 45 Canadians at the bank. RBC chief executive Gordon Nixon later apologized and the government pledged to reform the program to ensure foreigners are not brought into the country for jobs already held by Canadians.

The challenge of a skills shortage is not unique to Canada, Carney said, but the solution is training not bringing in temporary foreign workers. Contrary to some views, he added, Canada’s labour market is among the most flexible in terms of mobility among industrialized countries.

(…)
“There are some signs of skills miss-matches (but) we do believe employers play an important role to ensure life-long skills development is a part of the nature of business in Canada,” he told the MPs.

He added that the program should concentrate on shortages of high-skilled workers, and not on service jobs and other lower-wage categories that critics say are now being filled by foreign imports. The solution to that, said Carney, is for employers to pay higher wages and improve productivity.

“One doesn’t want an over-reliance on temporary foreign workers for lower-skilled jobs, which prevent the wage adjustment mechanism for … making sure Canadians are paid higher wages, but also that the firms improve their productivity,” he explained.

Carney said he believes the current Conservative government review is intended to address those objectives.

In other testimony, the central banker said it is quite likely that interest rates will remain at current historically low levels for some time.

He said the bank policy-making team considers three factors in its decisions about interest rates — unused capacity in the economy, inflation pressures, and household debt and finances — and all currently point to the trendsetting policy rate remaining at the current one per cent.

Throughout the hearing, committee members from different stripes attempted to draw in the governor into supporting their ideological views, and with some success. Carney noted on one occasion that his only advice to his successor might be not to answer a “loaded” question.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney

PARLIAMENT HILL, Ottawa—Immigration Minister Jason Kenney had a blunt message for would-be immigrants who don’t share fundamental Canadian values: Don’t come.

Kenney paused to speak with reporters after testifying at the parliamentary immigration committee Thursday morning.

The government was already working with police agencies and cultural groups to identify problem individuals before they go too far down the wrong path, he said. That work was facilitated through cooperation of agencies like CSIS and the RCMP along with cultural communities.

“There are a lot of stories that you don’t hear about, that don’t become public where people in certain communities will inform the RCMP that something is going on,” he said.

When made aware, the RCMP can contact the family of someone being radicalized and possibly involve a spiritual leader.

Though the government would do everything it could, Kenney said, “at the end of the day we can’t completely prevent the process of radicalization.”

That did not make immigrants from certain areas in the world any less welcome, however.

“We are an open country. The questions is how do we govern our openness in a way that minimizes risk to Canada’s national security. … We are not going to make up blacklists of countries from which people cannot come to Canada.”

He said Canada was already doing a good job of screening immigrants for possible radicals but would do a better job with biometrics, electronic travel documentation, and information sharing agreements.

He also dismissed political correctness that prevents people, including Liberal leader Justin Trudeau, from acknowledging the threat some people pose to Canada’s national security and core values.

Kenney said some people come to Canada believing certain “barbaric cultural practices” are justifiable.

“Part of of the problem has been a misunderstanding of the whole idea of multiculturalism. Some people have misinterpreted multiculturalism as a kind of cultural relativism which justifies even the most aberrant cultural practices which are clearly contrary to our democratic values.”

Kenney said that was why the government was using strong language to condemn certain cultural practices and being clear that people who view the West as their enemy are not welcome in Canada.

“If they hate the very values upon which Canada is based, please don’t come here, and please don’t bring your hatred to Canada. That is the message we are sending.”

Kenney’s comments come after police arrested Raed Jaser and Chiheb Esseghaier Monday for allegedly plotting to derail a train travelling between Toronto and New York in what the RCMP described as an al Qaeda-inspired plan.

Esseghaier told a Toronto court Wednesday that the criminal code was not a holy book and therefore findings based on the code were unreliable.

April 27, 2013. 9:59 am • Section: The Search, Immigration

It’s hard to learn a new language. An internal 2012 Immigration Canada report has revealed a rising proportion of immigrants, more than 600,000, work in Canada in a language other than English and French. And most of them, 60 per cent, say they cannot carry on a conversation in either of Canada’s official languages.

Stories regarding language barriers have become common in Canada.

The newcomer struggling to speak English who, as a result, has grave trouble trying to get a job.

The person who can’t communicate with medical staff during an emergency, making her dire situation more dangerous.

The classes filled with English-as-a-second language students; leading to concerns that teachers aren’t giving much attention to students who need to focus on other things.

The breakdowns in communication during condominium council meetings that have been called to discuss urgent costly repairs, sometimes leading to chaos and suspicion.

Such reports, whether they come from neighbours, health officials, school boards or others, illustrate how the difficulties of communicating across different languages can make it harder to build a sense of security and trust.

The Canadian government is taking heed of such stories. And it’s slowly following the lead of some European and other nations in addressing the language minefield.

Jason Kenney, minister of immigration, has been gradually increasing language-proficiency requirements for some immigrants. The changes will have a far-reaching impact.

But, first, what are Canada’s language facts?

The 2011 census discovered more than one in five Canadians, almost seven million people, speak a language other than English or French at home. The most common languages, in order, are Punjabi, Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish and Tagalog.

In Metro Vancouver, the proportion of residents who don’t speak English or French at home rises to one out of three.

It has been difficult for researchers to access data on the portion of residents who cannot speak French or English, a problem acute among immigrant seniors, stay-at-homes and those functioning outside the wage system.

But an internal 2012 Immigration Canada report, obtained under Access to Information legislation, has revealed what is going on in workplaces.

The report shows a rising proportion of immigrants, more than 600,000, work in Canada in a language other than English and French.

And most of them, 60 per cent, say they cannot carry on a conversation in either of Canada’s official languages.

gatesofvienna.net

We’ve often noted in this space that modern conservatives — and this is true on both sides of the Atlantic — seem determined to imitate their Progressive colleagues. It’s as if they say to the electorate, “Vote for us. We’re just like the liberals, only not quite so radical.” Dymphna’s most recent post talked about some of the reasons why the Right always seems to be singing from the same hymnal as the Left — just a quarter-tone flat and half a beat behind.

In the following article from Politically Incorrect, Manfred Kleine-Hartlage discusses the failure of conservative intellectuals to come to grips with the reasons for their perennial position on the sidelines. The author draws on a new book by Alex Kurtagic to highlight the need for intellectual depth and — dare I say it? — innovation in the thinking of those who would pass on the flame of traditional culture.

Many thanks to Hermes and JLH for collaborating on the translation:

Kurtagic: Why conservatives always lose

Those who live in any Western society and have still not lost the sense of reality know the oppressive sensation of living in a mad house where the patients have taken over and locked up the doctors: it is absolutely impossible to follow a news report, a political talk, or even a seemingly harmless cultural event, without being to a higher or lower degree openly bombarded with an ideology which deliberately misses any trait of reality; it preaches a “morality” which is the exact opposite of everything which has been considered moral for thousands of years; and whose sense and goal clearly consists of nothing more than the destruction of the fundamental principles of the social and political order, and not only that of a given order, but the order itself.

(By Manfred Kleine-Hartlage)

Much has been written about the creators of this radical change and destruction and about their methods (Anyone looking for actual books about this issue can check, among others, Gabriele Kuby’s magnificent investigative work The Global Sexual Revolution and Kerry Bolton’s equally empirically-grounded book Revolution from Above, which unfortunately is for now available only in English). Of course, what such works do not explain is the peculiar weakness of the other side:

Certainly, the Left is not only aggressive and unscrupulous, but it is also lavishly supported by its alleged opponents, the evil capitalists of the Rockefeller-clan, and it makes use of every political position of power it can occupy to misappropriate the money of taxpayers in order to finance leftist ideological productions and propaganda. But why has political conservatism, which only fifty years ago held bastions in Western countries, turned so powerless and compliant? Why does it not devise any proper counterstrategy to those of the Left, which are anything but secret?

Opportunism and treason explain a lot; but because there are by far not so many opportunist and treasonous conservatives, the problem must lie deeper.

Alex Kurtagic has investigated this question in the booklet: “Why Conservatives Always Lose”. It is a compilation of four essays, which have already been separately published on the internet in English language, but it is only after they were compiled into a volume of the Kaplanen series published by Antaios that the issue has been put in a concise and trenchant, but nevertheless all-encompassing and highly argumentative way. Kurtagic is one of those “wild right-wingers” (in which particularly the Anglosphere abounds) who does not fit in any category, and it is precisely for this reason that the leftist mainstream cautiously ignores them: one cannot pin on them the usual insulting labels without making a fool of oneself, and neither can one fight their arguments without being defeated.

Kurtagic has no fear of provocations:

My vision of the future is so bleak that I would find it laughable to care about any insulting label which one could pin on me. The price for the temporary cowardice today is the constant horror of tomorrow.

This cowardice is very extended, of course, and is has something to do with the basic drives of the individual, with needs which determine the direction of one’s behavior together with one’s political positioning before any “political discourse” could take place, before something like an argument could consequently dare to be mentioned. To these basic drives belongs the need to be socially considered, not to remain isolated, to have a high degree of self-esteem, and generally speaking, to feel well. This is a truism which just for these reasons is willingly ignored by conservatives:

In spite of having on their side the science, the data and the logical arguments, the right wing has for decades been in a state of retreat. This should be enough to make it clear that people need more than just facts in order to induce a change in their behavior. Nonetheless there are many who see themselves as being on the right side, and who indulge in the illusion that “unfortunately more enlightenment is needed”, that is: those who believe in equality know nothing about genetically-conditioned IQ differences; those who believe in Multiculturalism know nothing about the statistical frequency of black-on-white crime; those who believe in liberalism should simply read Spengler or Schmitt, (and so on).

The irony in all this is that the most blatant counterexamples which show us why this approach must fail stand daily in front of our eyes: the consumer society is not based on utilitarian logic, but on romanticism and daydreaming, behavior based on status and utopian illusions. And the ground for this is simply that these things work […]

That is why one is able to say with some justification that daydreamers who have the ability to contaminate others with their dreams are greater pragmatists that the self-appointed, pragmatically oriented rationalist who tries to convince others about common sense.” (p. 16 f.)

Kurtagic in this way turns against those conservatives who kneel daily before an alleged seriousness (which is defined by their enemies), and shows support for the dreamers and mavericks, the shrill strange characters, the paradise birds who are not so scarce on the political Right, and from whom the creative impulses should emanate if there is to be an alternative to the mainstream. Such opposition cannot be purely intellectual or political; it must show an artistic and aesthetic dimension, it must embody an attitude towards life, a style:

Those who choose a reality which is outlawed by the cultural establishment must resort to alternative networks and even unconventional methods… so the search for truth will be a question of lifestyle per se… (p. 19)

That does not mean, however, that the counter-culture should be confined to art, style and esthetics. The intellectual and ideological dimension plays a role, as the Left has sufficiently demonstrated.

A slogan on a poster, a convincing motto, even a Molotov cocktail and its specific physical goal all have an idea behind them, are distilled from complex concepts and value judgments which stem from some abstract plain. Millions of words are written before a banner is unfurled, a motto turns up in discussion or a bottle is filled with gasoline. The thug with a balaclava may well understand no single word of the theoretical texts that form the basis of his political movement. Nonetheless, he probably knows instinctively, from words, feelings and attitudes absorbed in his milieu, what goal his Molotov cocktail is intended to achieve, and why it must be this goal and no other. (p. 77)

Effective opposition, therefore, can only come from a functioning counter-culture with its own intellectual elite and intellectual discourse — if for no other reason than so that the hollowness of the Left’s claim to “intellectuality” is exposed. And this is basically not that difficult. In the end, this intellectuality consists of constructing lines of argument confirming the obvious. The Left gets away with it because, with purely political means and a considerable amount of intellectual and financial corruption, they have achieved a monopoly over the ideology-producing industry, especially the pertinent specialties in the universities.

The intellectual bankruptcy of the Left is a long-standing fact, hidden only by means of the artificial postponement of collapse. It will become public knowledge to the extent that a counter-elite is formed. Then many people, who only adhere to leftist ideas because the alleged intellectual elite do so, will have little difficulty in changing sides.

Unfortunately, conservatives are uniquely unqualified to develop such a counter-culture and such a counter-paradigm. Their whole mentality does not allow them to. Conservatives live from fear of change, and so tend toward sterile defense when such changes take place without their cooperation. In the end, they sigh and give up and decide it is the zeitgeist. They linger in nostalgia, focus on a past they cannot resurrect and can at best hope to mummify. By doing this, they above all spread boredom, and are born losers with “no sex appeal.” No one who understands that conservatives are born to complain while they run along behind the zeitgeist will be surprised at the constant treachery of parties like the CDU.

In the age of liberalism, conservatism is basically liberal. It does not defend tradition — whose relegation to oblivion it has cooperated in — but simply an older form of liberalism. (p.44)

This means that party projects initiated by disappointed conservatives against the current mainstream conservatism at best defend the liberalism of the-day-before-yesterday against the liberalism of yesterday (which itself is in defensive mode against the liberalism of today). Anyone who expects otherwise is deluding himself.

The correct opinion, which does not fall into the trap of this conservatism, is not right extremism, but something that Kurtagic calls “traditionalism” — an ambiguous and therefore somewhat unfortunate concept. (I prefer to associate myself with Norbert Borrmann’s suggestion to call what we are talking about “right” and accept the lack of acuteness of this concept.) The meaning of this traditionalism is, to be sure, not what is ordinarily thought of in that connection, and tends toward the memorialization of what is past. The meaning is rather what Martin Lichtmesz — quoting Gustav Mahler — describes in his foreword:

Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the passing on of the fire. (p. 9)

And Kurtagic expands:

Allowing for the ignorance of such things in our time, it must be emphasized that tradition does not seek a return to a fantasized, colorized past or to resume forgotten customs where they were abandoned. There may be good reasons why they were abandoned, and the institution of a new custom is often necessary to keep a tradition alive. A rediscovered tradition must be guided onward with an eye to the future. Continuation does not mean an endless repetition of the same thing.

If that is too abstract for anyone: a vivid example for the confrontation of a traditionalist position in Kurtagic’s sense (and mine) with a typically conservative one is to be found in my article “Krautkrämerhood” in my blog “Korrektheiten.”

Clearly, Kurtagic’s pamphlet thoroughly fulfills its promise to explain “why conservatives always lose.” Concisely formulated (and concisely translated by Martin Lichtmesz), it is a convincing analysis and a significant contribution to a debate which is overdue and absolutely must be held. Kurtagic indicates ways the opponents of the Left must go and directions in which they must think, if they want to finally stop inching along from one disappointment to another.

As CRTC hearings begin, racist rant compels community to call for rejection of the application
and demand the firing of the Sun News Network commentator

News Release
Tuesday, April 23, 2013
For Immediate Release
TORONTO – On the same day Sun Media Corp. presented its case to the Canadian Radio-Television Commission (CRTC) regarding a mandatory distribution licence, Canada’s Romani community and supporters rallied today outside the CRTC’s Toronto office to urge the national regulator to refuse Sun Media Corp.’s application and to demand the media outlet fire Ezra Levant following his nationally broadcasted xenophobic anti-Roma commentary on the Sun News Network.
“Ezra Levant not only viciously attacked and attempted to rob the Roma community of its dignity, he has also attacked many other communities in the past,” said protest organizer Gina Csanyi-Robah, executive director of the Roma Community Centre. “Given that Sun Media appears unwilling to part ways with Levant after his hateful commentary, which would have been the ethical thing to do, the CRTC cannot reward his employer with the opportunity to invade Canadian homes and force Canadians to subsidize the media company some $18,000,000 so that he can expose our children and youth to further vile rants.”

The Roma Community Centre invited Bernie M. Farber, human rights activist and former CEO of the Canadian Jewish Congress, to speak at the demonstration. “Many of us remain very concerned that, notwithstanding the apology offered six months after the clearly hateful remarks made by Ezra Levant against the Roma community, the effects still linger,” said Farber. “The CRTC must carefully determine, given the Sun News record, whether it is in Canadian broadcasting’s best interests to grant its request for a basic cable licence.”

Canadian-Romani jazz musician and community activist Robi Botos also spoke at the protest.
“As a musician, I have travelled all over the world and I have praised Canada everywhere I have been,” said Botos. “I used to be proud telling people how I don’t face racism in Canada. That changed last September. I was with my family at home and watched Ezra Levant’s racist rant on TV. I have never felt so disappointed since I have been in this country. I didn’t know what to tell my children, they were shocked. You cannot promote hatred in Canada, especially not on national television.”

Former Member of Parliament Borys Wrzesnewskyj also addressed the gathered crowd.

Although Mr. Levant has formally ‘apologized’ for his on-air comments, only after intense legal and public pressure, the Romani community has rejected the apology because Mr. Levant has continued to use the discriminatory term ‘Gypsy’ in reference to the community. The apology seems to have been conditioned more by Sun Media Corp.’s ‘mandatory distribution’ application, rather than a sincere change of heart by Mr. Levant. Mr. Levant continues to spew hatred and vitriol against other communities as well, including indigenous people in this country.

On Sept. 5, 2012, Mr. Levant made the following malicious comments broadcasted live throughout Canada on the Sun News Network (full transcript attached):

“Gypsies aren’t a race, they aren’t a religion, they aren’t a linguistic group. They’re the medieval prototype of the Occupy Wall Street movement, a shiftless group of hobos that doesn’t believe in property rights for themselves – they’re nomads – or for others, they rob people blind! (00:00:09.60)
“Let me stop before you start blowing your hate crime whistle at me for saying Gypsy or gypped. See, political correctness and euphemisms like calling them ‘Roma’ instead of Gypsy or as the BBC calls them ‘Travelers,’ well the point of that is to obscure the truth. They’re Gypsies and one of the central characteristics of that culture is that their chief economy is theft and begging.” (00:58-01:19).
“Being Gypsy isn’t like being Black, or being gay, or being a woman, or even Romanian, where many Gypsies come from – just like being from Sicily doesn’t make you part of the Mafia. Being Gypsy is a positive choice. Like being a Blood or a Crip. Like joining the Cosa Nostra. For centuries these roving highway gangs have mocked the law and robbed their way across Europe.” (00:07:43.41)
“Yeah. No thanks. I’m not interested in calling them Roma, or Travellers, or having a Human Rights Commission investigate what we as a society have done them wrong and maybe dispatching social workers to them. Hah! The social workers will just have their wallets stolen.” (00:08:14.58)

Timberline Secondary hosted its 14th World Vision 30 Hour Famine event this year overnight on April 12th and 13th. Twenty six students fasted for the cause and raised over $4,000 for people they don’t even know! For 30 hours these thoughtful young people experienced, in a very small way, what millions experience overseas, and even here in Canada, every day.

After school on Friday the kids got together in the school’s theater to sign in and sign up for one of three school community “payback” opportunities. One group went to help the school’s Earth

Club in weeding and planting in the school’s garden, one group took tools and garbage bags to clean the entire outside area of the combined high school and college campus and a third collected and sorted the can and bottle recycling. They did all that even before meeting back at the theater to take part in a two hour “teach-in” about the very issues we were doing the famine for… supporting people in empowering themselves. From that came a display on the numbers of children who die each night from starvation around the world. But the night wasn’t all about serious topics.

Following the “teach-in” the students spent the remainder of the night playing group games from a massive twister game to basketball, hide and seek, ping pong and other fun activities. They did slip back into some serious work as they were taken through a “land mines” simulation and discussion to open their eyes to what many people in “mine affected areas” live with, as well a discussion on homelessness through the creation of a cardboard “refugee” town in the school’s gym.

They were so busy that we didn’t have time to even watch a movie!

It was a wonderful event with wonderful people and it could not have happened without the support of the teachers, support staff and administration at Timberline. As well, a number of businesses in Campbell River came out to help out: Coho Books, Video Works, Merle Norman, Panago, The Beijing House, Stone House Teas, Cheesecake 101, Starbucks, Co-op Gas Bar; as well as Sears and the Brick for the boxes. So to all the supportive businesses and to all those people who supported the kids in their famine, particularly those who pledged them, a HUGE thanks from Timberline’s Global Issues Club.
