Just a few days ago, Boston, MA was struck with tragedy as during Patriot’s Day two explosives were detonated at the Boston Marathon. Although the event resulted in death and injury, there were some “silver linings” to the event. The locations of the explosions were close to the finish line, where many medical-trained personnel, first responders, and equipment were ready and waiting. Over the past few days, we have heard many stories of people helping others, and how in the middle of all the chaos, further loss of life was prevented. Many people ask, ”How can I be prepared to help myself and others?” While us at Cabin John Park VFD would love to take on as many capable and qualified volunteers as we can, we understand that many are not in a time or place in their life where they can put in the effort to train and serve in a volunteer fire/rescue department. That’s why we are taking this time now to pass along a message. Ever wanted to learn life saving CPR? Are you interested in taking a class on basic first aid? These are simple classes, that usually only take part of a weekend to complete, and give you knowledge that will not only last a lifetime, but could save the life of someone else. The American Red Cross is the primary resource in the United States for learning lifesaving skills, and a point for individuals to donate time, money, and blood. Beyond CPR and First Aid anyone can take a babysitting certification course, lifeguard course, and many other small certifications. If you are interested in taking a class, we encourage you to visit their courses site where you can learn more about the courses they offer, and find a class in your area. We also want to pass along the following messages: In events such as the tragedy in Boston, the need for sustained blood donations outweighs the need for immediate blood donations. Unless messages are being broadcast for immediate donations do what you can to assist in sustained blood donations. This means waiting until time has passed during a major tragedy to donate blood due to the fact blood does not keep for long periods of time and the recovery of patients can often be extremely lengthy and require multiple transfusions over a long period of time. If you prefer a monetary donation to assist with a disaster, always check with the Red Cross first to see if they have set up a collection point. Unfortunately, there are people who will take advantage of a disaster for personal gain and setup fake donation collection points. The American Red Cross is a trusted collection point, and often sets up collections for specific disasters. The American Red Cross provides assistance to us on a day-to-day basis. On house fires where it is no longer safe to live in the house, or the house has been destroyed the American Red Cross provides shelter and resource assistance to the families affected. They rely on your donations year-round, regardless of current [...]

This past Sunday, members of Cabin John Park VFD got up early and went for a run! At the Connelly School of the Holy Child, the annual “Tiger Trot” was held. This event saw many runners, and many sponsors turning out to support the local private school, located just down the road from Fire Station #10 in Potomac. While the event primarily benefits the school, Cabin John Park VFD receives a portion of the proceeds to help support department operations. This year, even more department members turned out to participate in the run. In even more exciting news, FF Bob Roller and EMT Robert Shaw also medaled in their respective age/gender groups, which was icing on the cake for the department. The department enjoyed participating, and looks forward to participating in the Tiger Trot again next year!

On January 31st of this year, the Town of Myersville in Frederick County, MD experienced a horrible loss. Two young girls had perished in a house fire that, based on reports from neighbors, “moved faster than anything they have ever seen”. It was recently determined that the cause of the fire, along with a fire in Accokeek in Prince George’s County, MD was the result of a baseboard heater. If used properly, baseboard heaters are considered a safe way to heat a room. However, combustible materials coming within inches of the heating elements is considered an extreme danger. We wanted to use the story out of Myersville to draw attention to the possible danger of improperly using space heaters. We at CJPVFD recommend that you read the directions of any heater and follow all warning associated with using heaters. Some general tips with any non-fixed heater include: Any heater that can be knocked over should be equipped with a circuit that turns off the heater in the event it is knocked over. Heaters should have self timers or thermostats that prevent the heater from running too long. Heaters should have guards over the elements to prevent combustibles from contacting the elements, and those guards should not be removed. If your heater uses fuel, you should only ever use the type of fuel recommended in the instruction manual. Most heaters are designated as either indoor or outdoor, and only should be used as such. On top of these recommendations, we also recommend that you make sure you have working smoke detectors and check them monthly! Please watch this clip from NBC4. It has some good safety tips from Mark Brady, Prince George’s County Fire Department’s Public Information Officer.

A fire mid-afternoon Monday brought in firefighters from Rockville, Cabin John, Bethesda, Bethesda-Chevy Chase, and Kensington as well as support units from Silver Spring. At a couple minutes past four in the afternoon, the alarm bells sounded for a working structure fire on Willow Green Court, in the Falls Chapel neighborhood in Potomac (Rockville VFD Co. 33′s First Due). A chief from Rockville VFD went on scene with heavy fire showing (as seen in photo) and immediately called for a Task Force and ordered all units to begin defensive operations. Tactics focused on initially protecting exposures then beginning a transitional attack by knocking down the fire from the exterior then moving to the interior. At this time, no injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Rundown: First Alarm: E726, E723, E730, E721, E710, AT703, T716, RS703, A733, C703G, C703C, BC703, BC704, DOC700 Rapid Intervention Dispatch: AT723, RS741B, M703 Task Force: E703, E720, T710, AR716, CT705 See more photos of the incident by Ed Tenney (MCVFRA/RVFD Photographer).

February came with a slow and very cold start. Taking advantage of the cold weather, the River Rescue And Tactical Services (RRATS) Team went up to Deep Creek for some ice rescue training. The RRATS team is comprised of Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Personnel, both career and volunteer, from various stations and volunteer companies across the county. RRATS team members participated in a combined Ice Rescue Training drill at Deep Creek Lake over the weekend of February 15 – 18, 2013. The team practiced ice rescue techniques in sub-zero temperatures to effectively and safely be ready when called upon to assist citizens in life threatening situations. Their training included: On shore reach techniques, real time ”staged” in-water rescues, (yes, we had RRATS personnel placed in the frozen lake to simulate actual rescue scenarios), Airboat deployment for search and rescue and Hypothermia protocols. The trip to Deep Creek Lake has become a tradition over the years, and continues to be a fantastic opportunity to train. The ability to train on thick ice is an opportunity that is difficult to take advantage of in and around Montgomery County, so CJPVFD enjoys the ability to send RRATS members to train at Deep Creek.

On Sunday, April 14, 2013 at 8:00 a.m., Holy Child will be hosting its third annual Tiger Trot, a 5K run/walk. The Tiger Trot is a fundraiser that will benefit the fitness and wellness programs at Holy Child as well as the Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department. In 2012, as the secondary beneficiary for this event, the CJPVFD received a $3,000 donation from Holy Child! The popularity of the Tiger Trot is on the rise. Last year’s participation in the event was tripled with over 450 participants! The goal is to continue growing this event so that even more funds are raised for the Holy Child health and wellness programs and the CJPVFD! You can help make this event even more successful by participating. Runners and walkers of all levels are welcome! Bring your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers and enjoy this event that starts on the Holy Child campus and winds through the scenic streets of Potomac. Our finish line celebration and awards ceremony, with music, Mix 107.3 DJ John Martin as our emcee, random prize drawings, a moon-bounce, and snacks & drinks, is certain to be a fun-filled close to the 2013 Tiger Trot. More information and registration information can be found here. We will see you there!

In the early morning of Thursday Jan. 31 ECC began receiving multiple calls for a possible house fire. Units from both Cabin John Park VFD stations 10 and 30 as well as surrounding stations responded quickly and arrived on scene to find heavy fire coming from the attached garage of a structure. Upon arriving on scene units received word that someone was still inside the house, unable to remove themselves from the structure. Between the Truck and Engine company from Station 10, the occupant was quickly located and removed while simultaneously the fire was attacked from the inside of the house, preventing further damage to the living quarters of the house. In this case, as seen in many before, a working smoke alarm alerted the family to the fire. Further proof that WORKING smoke detectors save lives.
It is not everyday that we post news from other volunteer fire departments, but today an incident in Prince George’s County, MD hit close to home. While operating on the Capital Beltway, the same major thruway visited by CJPVFD on an almost daily basis, Engine 281 from the West Lanham Hills Volunteer Fire Department, was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer, resulting in all four firefighters receiving injuries. One of the firefighters received very serious injuries requiring a helicopter transport to a local speciality hospital. Our thoughts are with those affect by the incident. We at CJPVFD hope that from this accident, there is a positive message about the importance of driving slowly and safely around accidents spread to citizens and guests of the area. For more, please see articles on Firefighter Nation (which includes radio traffic of the incident), NBCWashington, WUSA9, and FOX 5 DC.

As a PSA to all our residents, beginning on January 1st of this year Montgomery County has begun to bill for transports on a Montgomery County ambulance. Although Cabin John Park VFD often has volunteer members on its volunteer owned ambulance, billing will still occur. YOU WILL NOT BE BILLED DIRECTLY AND YOU SHOULD NEVER WORRY ABOUT CALLING 911! Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, along with county officials are reminding residents that this is not a direct billing system – you will never have a bill show up in your mailbox because you dialed 911! Ambulance reimbursement as it is commonly known, is simply a re-allocation of funds that are already disbursed. Ambulance fees allow Montgomery County to reduce operating costs by billing Medicare, Medicaid, and Insurance companies, NOT THE INDIVIDUAL BEING TRANSPORTED. To learn more, please visit see County Executive Isiah Leggett’s Letter to Residents and take a look at the video below. You may also visit this site to learn even more. Once again, you will NOT notice any changes in service, increased taxes, or any fees while on board. It is still NOT NECESSARY to present your insurance card while on board an ambulance. Our citizen’s personal safety will always be our top priority.
