Today is an exciting day for us Provoans. This afternoon the Mayor is set to make a major announcement about our city. Guesses are ranging from major infrastructure changes downtown to the acquisition of Google Fiber. I know this shows my inner Provo geek, but I couldn't sleep last night thinking about it. Also, I'm in a hotel in St. George and I slept with Erin last night who slumbers like a flipping fish caught by a hook. Refreshing!

We at the Rooftop Concert Series HQ want to add to the excitement of the day by dropping some news of our own:

Ladies and Gentlemen, CJaneKendrick.com Presents the 2013 Rooftop Concert Series!
Parlor Hawk

I suppose my favorite part of this line-up is the seasoned performers mixed with the newest Provo discoveries. Joshua James with Polytype? Amazing. Special thanks to Sarah Wiley our CEO and Corey Fox of Velour for arranging all the talent and curating the shows.

Now, join us in praying for dry, pink sunsets and come to our first concert--a little over two weeks away!

One of my favorite events in downtown Provo is happening this weekend, Bijou Market. It's a grouping of Utah's best artisans and craftspeople selling creative little gifts and delights. It's a biannual event and I try to make it each time.

Mother's day gifts? You will find them here.

Also, get your portrait drawn by Caitlin Connolly aka Lady Hue.

See their website for more details.

C. Reservation for two at Schneitter's Restaurant AND a couple's spa appointment the next morning.

I was particularly excited about Schneitter's. Because I love schnitzel. And spätzle. But mostly schnitzel.

"They'd better have schnitzel."

Thanks to some incredibly generous SIL's we dropped the kiddos off and headed up the canyon for the gorgeous 40 minute drive, reminiscing about memories and changes made in the canyon over the years. Bridal Veil, The Eagles Nest, Squaw Peak Trail, Vivian Park, Provo River, Deer Creek. Good times.

The Resort

We wound our way back though Midway and arrived. Definite European air to the property. Cobblestone drive, chalet style design, and bears with accordions. Check-in was as courteous and professional as any resort we've been to (like, 2) and we headed to the room to relax a bit before dinner.

"They'd better have schnitzel."

The room was very nice. We stayed in The Villa, which meant a largish suite with a kitchenette, sitting room, bedroom and big jetted tub and shower. Swiss accents show through: decorative motifs on the walls, and little hearts cut out in the furniture. For those bringing the offsprings along, you can reserve a suite in The Villa with an adjoining bedroom that sleeps 4.

Dinner

Relaxed for a sec, then off to Scheitter's. They'd better have schnitzel.

Love was definitely in the air as we noticed --while browsing the menu (they have schnitzel!)-- several WOWIE evening dresses and canoodling couples sprinkled throughout the restaurant.

Dinner was wonderful. The appetizers - the house salad and the bacon and potato salad were unique and delicious. The schnitzel was excellent, served with house made noodles and a mushroom gravy. We also tried the filet, which was great, served with a potato and apple gratin (rosti?) Desert was creme brulee (of course) and this CRAZY danish (like breakfast danish) bread pudding thing that...well...let's just say: gluttony. Zero self-control. Wow.

Then a short walk and back to the room for some canoodling of our own.

Sleeping in. Oh man. You forget.

Walked over to Bäckerei & Eis to see what we could come up with for breakfast. Ran into the danishes that comprised the previous evening's...episode, and when with a ham and swiss croissant. And an eclair. Well, two eclairs, one milk and one dark chocolate. And a fruit tart. And some other items. Now I'm embarassed.

The Spa

The Spa itself was what you hope to find in a resort level operation; comfortable and professional. Essential oils and new age music abound. We had a couples massage, which was wonderful, if just a little awkward for my lovely wife. See, I tend to get...vocal during a massage. Some people breathe, some people meditate, some people sleep.

I go: huuhnhhaaaaooohhhhthatfeelsgood.

Which gives my wife the giggles.

Anyway, we both agreed the massages were amazing. In particular we both commented on the magic they worked on our arms. Our therapists both guessed that we spend a lot of time in front of the computer. Imagine that.

And Home

A quick stop by the gift shop for some Milka for the babysitters and we headed home. As we drove down the canyon, we talked about our little outing; fun and funny moments, the food and the room and the massages. Here's hoping to going back soon.

Cliffs Notes on Zermatt Resort:

- One of only four 4 diamond hotels in all of Utah, yet extremely reasonably priced.

- Resort is within a 45 minute drive from SLC & 30 minute drive from Provo.

- 20 minutes to Park City for Night life

- 1/2 the cost of most accommodations in/around Park City and Deer Valley

- European Style Year Round Resort

- Won 14 Best of State Awards in three years including best Hospitality Property overall.

- 5000 sq.ft Day Spa

- Two Restaurants - Schneitter's is the nicest restaurant in Heber Valley

- European Bakery

- The Villa is a perfect couples suite or family condo (this is the same room type that you stayed in. Jealous?

And who knew they now do Clothing in the Home Stores? Kids clothes too. Nobody told me.

Rude.

For those of you who don't know: DownEast is a clothing and home furnishing outlet company with locations in Utah, Idaho, Arizona, California, Nevada, Washington, Colorado AND Wyoming. They have 11 Outfitters stores, 20 mall stores and 8 of these Home & Clothing stores.

Their thing: major name brand clothing and furniture from 40% to 90% off

BUT they also have their own line of both as well.

I've loved DownEast dresses forever. I own 9.

On the other hand, I've always thought our decorating style was a little too....eclectic for DownEast Home.

Hush my mouth and call me Sally; we found some pretty sweet stuff.

The Chief was a little stunned at the sheer number of places to run and hide.

Checking out the felt Bunny Bags. Just in time for Easters. The store was just getting in it's Spring stuff. More of their pictures on the DownEast Home Facebook page.

Wait. Things about being a part of Justin Hackworth's 30 Stranger Project:
1. A beautiful picture made of you and your mother/your and your daughter.
2. All portraits are taken in Justin's downtown Provo office.
3. You get to meet Justin Hackworth.
4. Justin tells sorta funny pirate jokes.
5. Donations go towards the Center for Women and Children in Crisis.

Hello Provo,

It us, the Downtown Provo Rooftop Concert Series committee (Mindy Gledhill, Justin Hackworth,
C. Jane, Sarah Wiley) it's time to start getting together to make this year's Rooftop Concert series happen! This year we are hoping to put on six shows--May through October--the first Friday of every month in conjunction with the downtown gallery stroll.

Last year was a smashing success and we're excited to do it again!

Want to help?
Here are three easy ways:

1. We are looking for sponsors! Just think about this: your company sponsoring a community concert in an amazing venue with an exciting audience of music/culture-lovers. You love it! We love it. We have packages for sponsorship starting at $500 (tax deductible options).
Email C. Jane:cjanemail (@) gmail.com for more info.

2. We are looking for volunteers! We are hoping to make our small team a huge force events staff! Help ranges from ushering, set up, take down, media blitzes and a whole lot more. There will be a volunteer meeting/ party March 10th, downtown for us all to meet up.
Email Mindy: mindy (@) mindygledhill .com if you'd like to volunteer.

3. We are looking for social media troops! Have a blog? Facebook page? Twitter account? We'd like to use our community's social networking to spread the word about our concerts. If you'd like to help in advertising our series, please email
C. Jane at: cjanemail (@) gmail.com and we'll put you on a First To Know email list.

Thank you so much. We hope to hear from you. We promise good times!

The Downtown Provo Rooftop Concert Series is a free community event. It takes place on the top level of the Provo Town Square parking terrace with panoramic views of the Wasatch Front and Downtown Provo rooftops. The series features both Provo and national touring musicians. Last year (our series first ever) drew over 1,000 audience members and was a huge success!
Our past shows:
Nik Day and Benton Paul September 2010

Especially because we'd --just a couple of weeks earlier-- won a $25 gift certificate for there from Justin Hackworth.

We told Justin we'd just accept cash.

Now: Glad about a new restaurant in residence; Station 22. (22 West Center)

To quote Richard Gregory - Owner, Proprietor and all around cool cat:

"I suppose the most important thing that we're trying to do with the place is to provide a sensible lunch option for busy professionals who also are concerned about the quality of what they eat. We use high-quality ingredients and I think that fact becomes obvious when they've tasted the food. We're not breaking any incredibly new ground, we're just providing really great versions of classic dishes for a reasonable price.

We're also pushing to offer as much local & sustainable product as we can. We source our bread locally and we plan to source local produce as soon as we can. Most of our dishware is made from recycled sources and/or is compostable. We also feature local art. We're obviously very pro-local!"

Preach on brutha-man.

Best French Dip I've had in forever; savory, thin-sliced beef (no gristle!) topped with a generous helping of caramelized/sauteed onions, on what I thought was ciabatta, but I ate it too quickly to remember. And the au jus is amazing. Normally au jus is just not...tasty enough for me. It's thin and when it seeps out of the sandwich, you're left with just a tease of the taste you want. Station 22's au jus is oppositely, nice and strong. You taste it in your sandwich. If you don't inhale it like I did.

Highly recommended. Give Station 22 a try.

I hear the Meatball Sandwich and The Italian Stallion are both awesome.

Through the end of this month: Mention C. Jane's Guide to Provo and get a free drink with a sandwich purchase. Let em know we sentcha.

Station 22 on facebook.

Richard is also working on some other projects: one of which will be called "The Bake Shop." In a small section of where Los Hermanos once was, a small dessert cafe, open early to late, with an underground "dessert lounge" will live. Hang out, munch a baked good, see live performances. Perfect for that morning pastry or a late night date without breaking the bank.

Excited. Rock Canyon trail, October 2010

Post by Jesse Gray

My name is Jesse Gray and I am a student at Utah Valley University majoring in Political Science with an emphasis in International Relations. For the majority of my life I have lived in Utah and like most Utahans I have come to love and enjoy the distinct landscape and community with which we are blessed.

I have always been mesmerized by all the outdoor activities so readily available. For example, I love to rock climb (although I am more prone to falling than actually climbing). One of my favorite climbs is located in Little Cottonwood Canyon called Penta Pitch. It is a three-pitch climb just opposite of the LDS church’s vaults (where they hide all the gold). It is an exhilarating climb.

Utah’s hard work and diligence has created a successful atmosphere that has evolved since the pioneers despite its diverse, rugged and special conditions. For instance in the wake of the current economic crisis unemployment has been lower in Utah than the rest of the nation. Utah’s success can be attributed to many hardworking people who over the years have been governed by proficient principles creating an affluent ambience. Utah has become accustomed to an exceptionally diverse economy that has adequately adapted to its unique geography.

However, it is more than just “economic factors” and impressive statistics that make Utah such a great State to live in. Utahans are dedicated to strong, principled values, seek to be self-sufficient and have strong entrepreneurial and philanthropic inclinations and view the world humanely and in a positive light.

Utah Valley University was host to the Women of the Mountains Conference in 2007 and the Secretary General of the United Nations recognized Utah’s ambitious goals to sustainable mountain development. Utah will further demonstrate its hard work and strong values through the Women of the Mountains Conference, which will be held at Utah Valley University this March 8-9.

There will be workshops and panel discussions with ambassadors, diplomats and representatives from many nations and organizations to discuss how to do what Utah has done in achieving sustainable mountain development and the vital role that women play in realizing it. Utah’s success will be highlighted and other nations will seek to implement the same strategies in their countries.

As a citizen of Provo I am delighted to have the Women of the Mountains Conference hosted at Utah Valley University. I feel that Utah has a unique opportunity to be a leader and aid many countries productively with knowledge and experience. It is admirable that so many other nations have recognized the success of our community and want to emulate the same strategies and lifestyles that we have come to enjoy here.

Please come and support the conference at Utah Valley University March 8-9. There will be many events and workshops and we hope to have support and interaction from the citizens that have helped to make Utah such a great State.
Way back in January (so long ago) Mindy Gledhill asked me to post a date night suggestion for her Valentine's Concert at Velour this Saturday. But before I could post it, the concert was SOLD OUT. And where does that leave us? Nowhere. (I mean, you, nowhere. She said I could have some comps--free tickets--she was holding on to. Oh just kidding. I am still C. Jane, C. Jane from the block.)

(Don't worry about the comps that I got/I'm still CJ, CJ from the block.)

Then you know what that prolific Mindy did? She went ahead and added another show ON VALENTINE'S NIGHT! Same place--Velour. Same time --8. So now, what is your excuse? Sounds like a perfect Family Home Evening/Valentines evening outing to me!

Buy tickets here.

*just in case I get sued. I took my lyrics "CJ from the block" from J.Lo and also, it was me who went ahead and pasted the new dates on the concert poster. What? Can you tell it's not a professional job? I told you I'm just CJ from the block.

C. It is a beautiful thing to live in Provo.

Here are two reasons why:

Justin Hackworth is doing a promo right now for blogger's headshots. For an amazingly cheap amount ($100) Justin will fix that little problem you have with your current headshot (it stinks).

No but seriously, I cannot over-state enough how important headshots are to bloggers and other professionals. Justin has taken my photo (that's me above, in the chartreuse ) as well as Chup's photo (he's an actor) and we've used them over and over again for many different projects.

Oh, hello Chuppie Pie:

Wow. He's a handsome plate of Idaho spuds.

What was I saying?

That is my testimony to you. Click on Justin's button on the sidebar and read more about this deal.

OR see here.

Secondly,

(I love this idea)

Abby Taylor and her friends are letting the community know how they can help out a family who is in need. On February 1st, Royal Petersen and Jennifer Mallett Petersen rushed their 7 week old baby Ezekiel to Primary Children's Hospital. He has RSV and a coarctation of the aorta.

Royal is the owner of Sub Zero Ice Cream at the Provo Towne Center. It's a tight time of the year, and as they are caring for their precious baby 'Zeke', come eat ice cream. Bring friends, family, dates, and FHE groups anytime, any flavor.

Let's support a local business owner and in turn help out his family. And let's eat ice cream!

Have a happy snowy day!

p.s. Here is my des news column about last week's freeze out. Wasn't cold? Righteous cold.

C. Try UVU's production of She Stoops to Conquer. It's a classic play with a social media twist. Amusing, entertaining with a smattering of tunes-o'-the-18th century karaoke. In fact, this play was such a hit it's going to perform in L.A. as part of the Kennedy Center, American College Theatre Festival on Feb. 9.

But before it goes, you can see it on Saturday night February 4th at 7:30. Cell phones are encouraged. I repeat, cell phones are encouraged.

Tickets can be purchased online at the UVU Theatre website, by phone at 801-863-PLAY or in person at the UVU Theatre Box Office, located on the far eastern side of the campus at the Noorda Theatre.

And yes, this is a Chris Clark production. And yes, Chup and I have seen it and can send you to it with our thumbs up (in an American way, of course).

Because you're in Orem already, I can't recommended The Chocolate enough for an after-activity hang out. Go there and get a slice of The Husband and sit down for awhile. Oh man, I am drooling.

OR you could join my friends Paul Jacobsen & The Madison Arm at Velour. 8:00pm. It's going to be a golden show, like always.

Paul Jacobsen and the Madison Arm, March 09 from Jed Wells on Vimeo.

And if you are so inclined, PLEASE VOTE FOR THEM HERE! Thanks Provo!

I think my love for winter began when I first saw Raymond Briggs' Snowman. It's about a little red-headed boy who awakes to find that it had snowed steadily all night. He then builds a snowman who at the strike of midnight comes alive. The two share great adventures together continuing through the night. No words in this story, but great music. A must add to your collection...a Clark favorite.

So how do you chase the winter blues away? I have found that you either have to get away to seek the sun or tackle winter head on. We tackle winter head on by skiing at Provo's gem of a resort Sundance. We love Sundance.I am not talking about stuffy, celebrity Sundance. No, I am talking about green-apple sucker Sundance! The ski year 2010-2011 so far has been nothing less than stellar! November and December brought deep snows and we've played in it ever since. Although Sundance does not have the terrain of a Snowbird or get the inches of Brighton, we love it for its beauty and accessibility. Sundance is our resort choice. That's an easy choice when it is only 13.8 miles from my front door! Lift lines are more than manageable, ski to your ride parking, and there isn't much of the mountain that my kids cannot maneuver. We also love to ride the night! There are no lift lines night skiing at Sundance. Night skiing is a great way to get your small kids started. It is cold but you'll find you have the mountain to yourself. So escape the smoggy valley and come join us at Sundance. The nachos at the top are TDF (to die for)!

Big thanks to C. Jane for letting big brother show off his vid on her blog. No yard sales in my video but great scenery, blue sky and dazzling skiing. My favorite part is when Stelli-Kat burns through the snowboarders. Yo snowboarders move it or lose it!
In honor of the best game ever played at the Marriott Center, I give you Amazing, written by Jimmer's brother T.

BYU Basketball 2011 so far has been a stellar year. With a record of 17-1 and a top ten national ranking it is good to be a Cougar hoop fan. The media press is making a big to-do about one Jimmer Fredette and rightfully so, but if you ask me it goes back to December 1, 2010 when the Cougars went into a hostile crowd at Creighton and got a 12 point victory. Creighton is a tough place to play and our boys in blue grew up a lot that night. Since the Creighton game the Cougars have strung along some impressive W's with wins over Vermont, UTEP and conference foe UNLV. Not to mention a 22 point drubbing of history-rich University of Arizona.

Let's look at the key game to this point...UNLV. It is now or never for these senior Cougars as the program will leave the MWC for the Western Coast Conference next year. On January 5, 2011 Jimmer placed the team on his back and embarrassed the 24th ranked Runnin' Rebels on their own floor. Jimmer was off to a slow start scoring only 3 points in the first 15 minutes this to the delight of the Rebel faithful as they chanted Jim-mer...Jim-mer. Jimmer then went on to make his next 4 of 5 3-point shots to score 14 points in the first half. The second half belonged to the trio of Jimmer Fredette, Jackson Emery, and Provo Bulldog Brandon Davies. Emery and Fredette combined for a total of 61 of BYU's 89 points. The Rebels did not have an answer to the dynamic duo and saw themselves lose in ugly fashion 89-77 and it really wasn't as close as the score indicates.

BYU has won 2 conference away games and one home game to this point in league play. This including the win at UNLV and a win at Utah. I would like to belittle the Utes a bit but I won't. They too had no answer for Mr. Jimmer Jammer. Jimmer torched the Utes for a season high..(gulp) 47 points.

So what does it all mean you ask? Well, it could be monumental. The team today has great momentum, the nation's leading scorer, and they play in a decent basketball conference. I believe they have two losses coming to them. One at San Diego St. The Aztecs are good and are more athletic then the Cougs. I also see them dropping a home game somewhere down the line to may be UNLV, San Diego St, and may be a New Mexico sneaks up on them. With the Aztecs as good as they are the Cougars should end up 2nd in conference with a two seed in the MWC tournament in March. If they can somehow pull off a tournament championship they could be poised for a 3 or 4 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Let me take off my Tom Kirkland hat for a moment and put on my own thinking cap. This BYU team is fun to watch. They score lots-o-points and do it in a fun and fashionable way. They have great guard play, a budding big guy in Brandon Davies and a great coach. Sit down Danny Ainge, Jimmer Fredette is the best player to ever play at BYU. He is the only reason I tune in. I may never see another athlete like him wearing a hoop jersey at BYU again. Jimmer enjoys stepping on the opponents neck and delights in watching them squirm for their last dying breathe. I appreciate that. I see a lot of that spirit in young Jake Heaps!

Oops did I talk football?

I don't care how good the basketball team is ....is it football season yet? September cannot come soon enough!

Who is going to the game tonight?
