I was carefully to choose photos that represented a variety of potential home owners. The client wanted to maintain a trendy urban look while also appealing to the young professional.

Nick Tipton, Ad Design Manager

Charlotte’s Lust List featured one of the winners of this year’s...

Charlotte’s Lust List featured one of the winners of this year’s ladies-only edition. The cover design intentionally plays off beauty magazines with soft colors and the same vibe was also carried into the inside cover package that was executed by Valery. It makes for a perfect match of inside & outside even though two different designers worked on it.

Markus Schneider, Creative Director

Valery Lovely, Senior Art Director

This was given to us by DC and needed to be done very quickly...

This was given to us by DC and needed to be done very quickly (one hour). All I had to work with were the pics of the cars and the logo. No reference of any kind for this one. I just pulled elements from the logo for the copy and colors, and I think it came out quite nice.

Brandon Yates, Ad Designer

We had some debate when creating this ad, and went through...

We had some debate when creating this ad, and went through numerous revisions and layouts. It took a while to agree on a clear vision. In the end we kept it simple, leaving the concept to reveal itself. The map was slightly pixelated but finding the old style of Tampa Bay was difficult, so we made it work.

Ryan Phillips, Ad Designer

Darrow Montgomery, the Washington City Paper’s staff...

Darrow Montgomery, the Washington City Paper’s staff photographer, is really a gem. His work makes my job incredibly easy, because with art like this, how can this cover not work?

Brooke Hatfield, Junior Art Director

These two logos were used to promote share pages in the Chicago...

These two logos were used to promote share pages in the Chicago Reader. The first was used on the Valentine’s Day share pages for advertisers. The second was used multiple times to market the Green Pages. These pages were open to environmentally conscious advertisers who wanted to plug that part of their business. Both logos were used with full page designs that matched the logo.

Nick Tipton, Ad Design Manager

I really like this ad and the minimalist qualities of their...

I really like this ad and the minimalist qualities of their furnishings. Originally they had asked for all the items to be cut out and placed on a black background. I thought it might be better to go in a slightly different direction, showed them this version, and they approved.

Ryan Phillips, Ad Designer

This ad was inspired by the color of their logo. The goal was...

This ad was inspired by the color of their logo. The goal was to direct the main focus to the appearance of the restaurant, look of the food and accompanying coupon.

Lisa Deloach, Ad Designer

My goal with this ad was to find a body copy that matched the...

My goal with this ad was to find a body copy that matched the edgy logo. I think this ad is successful because it catches the eye and is easy to read, which promotes a positive image for the client.

Brandon Yates, Ad Designer

This cover story was designed for the annual Urban...

This cover story was designed for the annual Urban Explorer’s Handbook for Charlotte. The outside cover idea was to portray two characters in the Battle of the Hoods. The inside cover package showcased various neighborhoods around Charlotte. While the neighborhoods are all unique, the design ties them all together.

Valery Lovely, Senior Art Director

I’ve been designing logos for about 10 years. These are...

I’ve been designing logos for about 10 years. These are some used recently for promo materials in our various markets. Lust List is my favorite because everyone liked the first draft right away.

Jeremy Fuerst, Art Director

This cover was designed by using three original character...

This cover was designed by using three original character illustrations done by artists Scott Sanders and Matt Tinsley, who created promotional materials for the Decatur Book Festival. We got permission to use the characters to come up with our own photo illustration. I used a stock image background as a landscape for the characters, and placed them to create a scene. The overall cover was made to look like a graphic novel to match the Book Festival theme.

Valery Lovely, Senior Art Director

This 1/2H ad for our Tampa market is a combination of two ads...

This 1/2H ad for our Tampa market is a combination of two ads that I designed, which ran separately in previous issues. My challenge as I combined them into one was to use a font for the new information that complimented the overall imagery. I tried to create a seemingly flawless execution of the vision provided by the client and sales representative.

Ryan Phillips, Ad Designer

As a designer, you know you’ve done well when a client...

As a designer, you know you’ve done well when a client does not want to change the appearance of their ad each week. This is one such client that has been successful at establishing a look to associate with their brand. I refresh their text and image every so often, but their overall presentation remains consistent.

Brandon Yates, Ad Designer

One of my personal favorites. The challenge was to sell a very...

One of my personal favorites. The challenge was to sell a very intense cover story about hate crimes in Mississippi while we were having the 4th of July issue. I researched and blended a mosaic of images into the American flag – the images reflecting the ugly topics cover the red of the flag while images of achievements cover the white. It achieved a street box presence with a patriotic cover that revealed the subtleties at a second glance.

This one was done by Ming Doyle. I used hand-drawn fonts for the head and byline to help incorporate them into the image.
