On March 24th, the new portal of Government of Paraná went live. This new communication tool was presented at the weekly meeting of the School of Government by the President of the Company Informática do Paraná (Celepar), Mr. Vanderlei Iensen. Among the main features of the new website is the color-based visual model to differentiate between the content for its relevance and ease of maintenance, and statewide access to government services.

The portal is divided into five major areas, which are the points of entry for other information:

    * list of services available to citizens,
* services and information for the business environment,
* information about Paraná,
* government information, and
* news,

All divided by tabs and color specific.

According to Mr. Iensen, the focus of the portal is to provide information to Parana's citizen, with the ranking of information in order to organize the content and ensure the integrity and robustness of published data. The goal is to maintain the distribution of content based on the national standard for electronic government (e-gov).

The XOOPS Project is experiencing something that probably none of the Open Source CMS projects have ever experienced: reunification with its forks.

It's typical in the Open Source environment that developers work on a project, but then have different ideas, and leave to create a fork. Most of the time they never come back.

So it's a sign of a visionary leadership of the current XOOPS team that they have reached out and were able to attract back three of its recent and most innovative forks:

Simple-XOOPS under leadership of Dirk Herrmann from Germany (www.simple-xoops.de),

EXM System under leadership of Eduardo Cortes from Mexico (www.exmsystem.org), and

Zarilia under leadership of John Neill from UK.

It is also a clear vote of confidence from the forks' developers for the current leadership team of XOOPS and their direction.

All of these forks are very innovative and will bring wealth of features back to XOOPS that will benefit XOOPS users for years to come, and will enhance the upcoming XOOPS 3.0 release. It also show XOOPS' increased effort to bring together and unite XOOPS developers from around the world.

World’s leading Open Source CMS solution gets even better

After over 25,000 downloads of its previous version in just three short months, the XOOPS Project, world’s leading Open Source CMS (Content Management System), is aggressively building on this success and has released a new version of its award winning software - XOOPS 2.3.3.

This release focused on bug fixes and usability improvements. Some of the major changes are:

improved profile and pm modules

improved installer

improved theme

improved tinymce editor

The improved installer is the highlight of this release, providing an easy way to install not only the program, but also important modules. The key for this new release was an active collaboration of XOOPS developers from around the world: China, France, UK, USA, Germany, Peru, Libya, Belgium, Netherlands, and several others. The worldwide XOOPS community is one of its strength, resulting in a quick translation of new releases into over 20 languages.

XOOPS has not only a very loyal base, as the number of downloads suggests, but is also highly respected in the industry. In 2008 it was a finalist in SourceForge Community Awards and in the CMS Awards by Packt Publishing. It also won the prestigious 2008 China Open Source Software Contest Award.

Open Source solutions are experiencing unprecedented growth, as corporations and non-profits tighten their belts and turn to quality solutions previously unavailable.

Content management solutions such as Joomla, Drupal, Magnolia and LifeRay are experiencing rapid growth, as they ramp up to meet the business community's desire for easy-to-use website development software that empowers teams to collaboratively create and update content. They can do it from the office, home, or even on the road - so long as they have access to the internet.

To meet the groundswell demand for information, training and a sense of community in the open source CMS realm, the US-based CMS Association announced its second international Exposition, to be held in Denver, Colorado. Dubbed the "Winter 2008 CMSA Expo," the event will take place on Thursday, December 4th and Friday, December 5th.

With the amount of community development and support we have seen so early, we are confident our philosophy is a hit with the community," development spokesperson Marc-André Lanciault explains.

PureEdit is a new CMS/Framework project launched this month and aims to simplify the development of your website. The CMS is aimed more at developers and currently beta with a growing community on the forums.

PureEdit is the first CMS that dramatically simplifies the back-end development of your website while giving you full control of the front-end design and programming. By allowing such uncommon flexibility, PureEdit empowers you to design web sites from the ground up, without forcing you to follow the narrow template rules you'll find elsewhere.

There are some screencasts on their website which shows how it works. PureEdit is written in php with support for MySQL (others coming soon). More information and download from http://www.pureedit.com/.

I have been using Joomla for many years and definitely impressed by its quality as Open Source CMS solution, its features and the ability to extend it using components and modules. If you are looking to get started with Joomla or for a good reference to explore the capabilities of this great CMS, you should get your hands on "Beginning Joomla from Novice to professional". The book is written by Dan Rahmel and published by Apress publishing. In 13 chapters and about 450 pages, Beginning Joomla provides the necessary knowledge to build and manage personal homepages, user communities, and corporate websites.

Introduction to Joomla!

The book starts with a brief introduction to content management systems and Joomla! Talking about the project history and how it forked from Mambo, then its features and how Joomla system works. Briefly, but I think it's necessary to get to know the project better. Finally the author pointed to differences between Joomla 1.0 and 1.5, where features have been boosted but compatibility have been broken for plugins between 1.0, 1.5 and mambo.

Quickstart: Setting up a Joomla site in 20 minutes

The second chapter, as its title indicates, dive you directly into Joomla world from the installer. The chapter explains how to install Joomla and make it working in 20 minutes, but I'm sure that before you finish the book you will be able to install it in less than one minute. There are issues very confusing with the installation especially for newbie's, so if you are new to Joomla management interface be sure to install the sample data. Many ignored since it's optional and the book just mentioned briefly in a screenshot.

Now that you have Joomla installed and working correctly, the book give you an introduction to be more familiar with the management interface: Adding articles, managing menus, personalize the logo, and different components in place. This is probably the end of the novice part of the book and you will see in next chapters more intermediate and advanced topics.

The announcement is the final step in WebDeal's plan to provide a complete growth path to its customers with eZ Publish 4.0 - from Premium Shared Hosting to Fully Managed Dedicated Clusters.

Oslo, Norway, December 14, 2007 - WebDeal, which already held the position of leading hosting provider for eZ Publish 3.x, is now the first hosting company to announce support for the newly released eZ Publish 4 on all of its hosting levels. The new version of the popular content management system (CMS) meets WebDeal's strict quality standards and is available for immediate delivery.

This will allow their eZ Publish 4.0 customers to grow from a Shared Hosting environment to Fully Managed Dedicated Clusters without the hassle of having to switch hosting providers. One of WebDeal's biggest advantages has been its short lead-time delivery of pre-loaded eZ Publish hosting. With its new eZ Publish 4.0 hosting, the already short lead-time on Premium Shared Hosting has been reduced even more: in most cases customers will only have to wait 5 minutes before their eZ Publish site is up and running! And if they choose a more complex Fully Managed Dedicated Server with eZ Publish, they will only have to deal with a delivery time of about 3 hours.
