CRKN Participates in Innovative Project to Increase Access to Canadian Documentary Heritage

Ottawa, June 14, 2013 - In collaboration with Canadiana.org, the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) has signed an agreement to digitize the Heritage Collection and make available online some of Library and Archives Canada's (LAC) most popular microfilm collections from the mid-1700s to mid-1900s.

SCOAP3 Update

Clare Appavoo represented Canada at the SCOAP³ meeting in Geneva, on May 6, 2013 to provide an update on Canada’s reconciliation process and to participate in the discussions regarding moving forward. CRKN re-affirmed Canada’s commitment to the project with the proviso that the project must be cost neutral to CRKN members. Other countries whose National Contact Points were in attendance included; the US, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, the Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands, Hungary and Czech Republic.

CSAG Member Engagement

As the CSAG nears the end of its term and prepares a final report, members have been invited to participate in a series of teleconferences. The teleconferences will allow CSAG members to share their findings and recommendations, and allow the broader CRKN membership to provide input on the report before its presentation to the Board of Directors on June 20^th. Four teleconferences – one for each Canadian region, will be held between May 15^th and May 21^st.

CRKN is progressing through the engagement plan to solicit member and stakeholder input to the planning process. Consultations have taken place with Western members, Canadian library consortia, and the NRT. Once all the engagement sessions have taken place, input from participants will be integrated in the final draft and discussed at the June 20, 2013 Board meeting. Depending on the findings, the Board may request some additional investigations in advance of the AGM.

Foreign Exchange Project

Based on the success of last year’s pilot initiative, the Board of Directors has approved the expansion of CRKN’s foreign exchange management project. CRKN will be offering all members additional certainty and risk mitigation for their USD commitments for the Elsevier Science Direct, Taylor & Francis and Springer licenses for the 2014 calendar year.

Q: As one of the representatives on the POMS Presentation Team, what do you see as the most important outcome of that process?
A: The POMS process provided an excellent opportunity to synthesize existing data and to supplement it with new and comparative data. It identified new areas of measure, areas of strength and areas that may require additional focus. The opinion from the international expert panel validates our past achievements and challenges us to think about new innovations that will provide new value to our members.

SCOAP3 Update

This week CRKN members received a detailed package of SCOAP³ documents that describe the current status of this Open Access initiative and the terms and conditions of participation for 2014-2016. Members are asked to review the documents and return their commitment forms to CRKN by May 1, 2013. CRKN will be attending an international meeting of SCOAP³ National Contact Points (NCPs) at CERN in Geneva on May 6^th, hence the need to secure members’ commitments by May 1^st.

DCI Project Reaches Another Milestone

CRKN is pleased to announce that all of the DCI Project funds have been disbursed in advance of the March 31, 2013 deadline. In June 2010, the Board approved plans for the sustainability period, mindful of the requirements for fairness, transparency, sustainability, risk management and the need to share information with members in a timely fashion to support future budget planning. CRKN is now nearly halfway through the final year of that sustainability period.

Expansion of Project For Managing Foreign Exchange

Based on the success of last year’s pilot initiative, the Board of Directors has approved the expansion of CRKN’s optional foreign exchange management project. Members can choose to have additional cost certainty for three of CRKN’s largest licenses (Elsevier Science Direct, Taylor & Francis, SpringerLink) by communicating their choices to CRKN during the week of May 13-17. Members who do not participate in the project will continue to be invoiced as usual.

CRKN is preparing a draft strategic plan to share with members for input and feedback. This process began in 2012 with the second Communications outreach and was continued at the 2012 AGM in Halifax with several interactive discussions and workshops.

CSAG Update

In February, the Cost Sharing Advisory Group (CSAG) completed a set of interviews with CRKN members, aimed at gathering member feedback on key areas that will inform the recommendations put forth in the final report. Members were interviewed by CSAG committee members and were asked various questions about the current cost-sharing model and about ideas for future modifications.

Jocelyn Godolphin retires from Concordia Libraries with a legacy of transformation

Librarian Jocelyn Godolphin steps into retirement this June after bringing the collections of Concordia University Libraries through a decade of transformation. Godolphin, who has been in the job since 2004, is widely acknowledged to have raised the library collections to a whole new level during her tenure as Associate University Librarian, Collection Services.
