CRKN is finalizing the lease for downsized premises at Holland Cross in Ottawa. This has entailed securing a new tenant for CRKN’s existing space, negotiating a severance of lease with our current landlord, and coordinating the space fit-up and physical move. CRKN forecasts the reduced square footage and monthly rental fee will result in an approximate 40% reduction in cost for CRKN’s leased premises.

Canadiana and 46 member libraries from the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) signed a three-year Early Canadiana Online (ECO) license agreement to December 2014. This year, Canadiana welcomed two new CRKN subscribers: The Université de Moncton and Université du Québec a Rimouski.

Call for Nominations and Elections to the CRKN Board are Underway

The nomination and election process, set out in the CRKN by-laws under sections 9(1-8), was amended on October 5, 2011 at the AGM to be compliant with the Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act. Nominations are currently being received from voting members. Eight Board members will be elected from four categories to provide representation from the diverse national membership. Two appointments will be made, bringing the new Board size to ten persons.

Senior leadership of three major consortia -- Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN), Center for Research Libraries (CRL), and Joint Information Steering Committee of the Higher Education Funding Council, UK (JISC) -- met in Chicago on December 14, 2011. These leaders engaged in a day-long exploration of the growing complexities and challenges of licensing and acquiring primary source electronic resources, and preserving those resources for the long term.

In 2011 CRKN undertook an exploration to determine what impact access to digital research content has had on the research community in Canada. The findings of this research are available in a report called CRKN Outputs and Impacts: Findings of Four Focus Groups with the Research Community. This report was shared with Library Directors in August and is being more widely circulated in December 2011 and January 2012.

The All Delegate networking reception on October 4, 2011 in Gatineau, Quebec paid heartfelt homage to Jean-Pierre Côté for his generous contributions of time and vision to the collaborative effort that is now CRKN. In addition to members, many guests from outside the university community were invited to the occasion and came to take part in the celebration.

License renewals are continuing according to plan. For Phase 1 renewals, negotiations have concluded for CAIRN, Érudit and JSTOR. Member consultation teleconferences regarding these agreements, two calls in French and two calls in English, were held October 18^th – October 21^st. These teleconferences were well attended with over 35 people participating. CRKN 2011 Annual Report

CRKN is pleased to make its 2010-2011 Annual Report available to members and stakeholders. Responding to general industry concern that annual reports are becoming less relevant, CRKN took an innovative approach to this document. Since the annual report is used for informational and promotional purposes, a decision was taken to make it interactive in order to incorporate many assets into the document. Readers will find that news releases, reports, case studies, the strategic plan and other “assets” are conveniently incorporated into the document.

License renewals have been proceeding according to plan. For Phase 1 renewals, negotiations have concluded for CAIRN, Érudit, and JSTOR. Members should expect to receive offers in the next month. The Member Consultation Teleconferences on the SAGE Premier & Backfile renewal have been completed. Summaries of these teleconferences can be found on the LIM.
