Chase Away the Winter Blues with Spring Flowers and Colors

Bring forsythia that has yet to bloom, but has already budded inside. Be sure to cut a small amount of bark off the bottom of the branch, and place in a vase or container with water. Keep the branches out of direct sunlight until they bloom. One should see blooms in a few weeks!
Purchase already potted spring bulbs. Most green houses and box stores carry spring bulb flowers, like tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths. Best of all, you can plant these again to enjoy next spring either indoors or outside where ever you plan to plant them. If you decide to keep the bulbs to plant indoors, take them out of the pot after they are done blooming and they start to yellow. Place the bulbs in a cool, dry place without sunlight. Plant again in January or February depending on the grow time for the plant. If you plan to plant the bulbs outside, wait until after the first frost, sometime in the fall, to plant.

Daffodils which symbolize friendship are a popular spring flower. There are over 50 species of daffodil. They are a constantly recurring perennial flower that often bloom in clusters. Daffodils have been known to grow wild along abandoned homesteads throughout the world.

Daffodils come in a variety of sizes, from five inch blooms on two foot stems to half inch blooms on a two inch stem, with some of the smaller daffodils categorized as miniatures.

Did you know that tulips are one of the most popular spring flower, and the third most popular flower world wide. The rose and chrysanthemum are ahead of the tulip in overall popularity.

Tulips come in over 3,000 registered cultivated varieties, and there are around 100 species of tulip.

Tulips are a symbol of dreaminess, a declaration of love, the perfect lover, and imagination.

The majority of tulips are grown and cultivated in Holland.

There are three different classifications of tulip; early flowering, mid season flowering, and late flowering.

Early flowering tulips bloom in March and early April. Some early flowering tulip species are Kaufmanniana (eg., Waterlily), Fosteriana (eg.,Red Emperor), Single Early(eg., Apricot Beauty ), Double Early, and Greigii Tulips.

Mid season flowering tulips bloom in April and early May. Some examples of mid season flowering tulips are Triumph, Swan Wings Tulip, Darwin Hybrids, and Parrot Tulips.

Late flowering tulips bloom in May. Examples of late flowering tulips are Single Late, Double Late, Viridiflora Tulips, Lily-Flowered, Fringed Tulips, Rembrandt Tulips, Multi Flowering Tulips.

If you have a tulip garden, it is possible to have blooms throughout spring by incorporating early, mid season, and late blooming tulips in your garden.

Valentine's Day - Tips For an Enjoyable Day

Because Valentine's Day falls on a Saturday, a lot of us Monday to Friday workers get to spend the whole holiday with our spouse or special someone.

Does that mean we should plan the whole day together? Does that mean we should start celebrating at the crack of dawn until the sun goes down?

It all depends on how you want to celebrate Valentine's Day, and how your spouse would like to spend the day. Hopefully, you both will come to an agreement that works.

2009 Spring Wedding Color Trends

Wedding themes, flowers, reception decor, and the bridesmaids dresses all spin off of the wedding colors. Finding the perfect color combination is both personal and trendy.

You want to select colors that work with your personality, and colors that are trendy. Why choose trendy colors? Because it will be easier for you to find wedding accessories, flowers, candles, bridesmaids dresses, etc, if you have a popular, available, color choice.

Color trends for the spring of 2009 are:

Silver and purple

Silver works great for the overall color which would show up in your bridesmaids dresses and table linens. Purple, whether it is a bright bold purple or a softer lavender, would tie in nicely as a sash for the bridesmaids dresses, a floral bouquet, the napkins for the tables, and other smaller items.

All black

Black is still a top choice among brides. Black is a classic color to use for the bridesmaids dresses. Paired with white, black leads a classic, sophisticated look.

Of course, you could spice it up a bit, and add some silver or light gray with the black.

Pink

Pink is still a good choice for weddings. All shades of pink can be combined to create a romantic, dreamy wedding. If you like pink, but want something bolder, hot pink is a top choice among brides today.

Red is another beautiful choice and very trendy today. Most couples who choose to use red, combine the bold color with white to create a crisp, lively wedding. Red is both romantic and alluring, which speaks volumes about your love together.

Gray

Decorating the Christmas Tree

It's that time of year where we go out and chop down an evergreen tree, hit the local store for an artificial tree, or dust off our artificial tree from years before.

However you aquire the Christmas tree, you will ultimately be decorating it, and we would like to help you with ideas and themes to create a beautiful Christmas tree.

Start with an idea of what you want the tree to look like. Perhaps you collect certain ornaments and decorations, like snowmen, stantas, nutcrackers, or angels. Which ever one you may collect, you can use them as a start for your Christmas tree theme.

Say you collect all things santa claus. You can take the santa ornaments. Find a color that is used with most of the ornaments, and use that as your color for the lights, garland, and/or ribbons that will also adorn the tree. You could even have a Santa Claus tree topper.

Whatever you like, you can use that as a starting point for decorating the tree.

Perhaps you do not collect any type of Christmas trinket. Maybe you only like the colors of Christmas, or color in general. If this is the case, you can create a beautiful color coordinated Christmas tree that revolves around the theme, color.

Some wonderful color combinations for Christmas are the traditional red and green, blue and silver, red and gold, green and either gold or silver, purple and silver, silver and gold, white and gold, white and silver, or a combination of them all!

One theme I truly enjoy is one that is not traditionaly Christmas related, and that is a theme for an item that you might collect or enjoy year round.

Do you collect peacocks? If so, you could deck your Christmas tree in peacocks, peacock colors, and peacock feathers. This would be a unique and beautiful way to express yourself.

This theme could work for anything you may collect; such as, birds, elmo, baby dolls, teddy bears, beach memerobelia, sea shells, etc.

Once you have your idea for the Christmas tree theme, start decorating!

Halloween, Autumn, and Thanksgiving Outdoor Decorating on a Budget

With the economy flat lining or falling, we all need some ideas on how to decorate for the holidays on a budget.

Autumn, Halloween, and Thanksgiving decorations are pretty easy to create yourself or find relatively cheeply, perhaps even free.

Here are some ideas we use for decorating our yard for the Autumn season.

Visit a local farm before harvest time and ask if you could have some of the cornstalks for your fall decorations. Some farmers are willing to cut a few stalks down for nothing, as long as they get to keep the ears, or for a small price if you want to keep the corn on the stalks.

While your at the local farm, ask about straw bales. You can usually purchase a bale of straw cheaper at the farm then if you go to a landscape or garden center.

Visit your local farmers market for pumpkins. They usually have better prices,and the pumpkins are fresher so they tend to last longer than the ones at the grocery store. Remember to save and dry some of the the pumpkin seeds from your jack-o-lantern to plant next year! Then you will not have to purchase any pumpkins the following year.

When you get home, bundle the cornstalks together and attach them to a post. Place the straw bales, or bale, in front of the stalks and add a pumpkin or two to the top and around the bale of straw.

You can also use gourds and indian corn, found at most farmers markets, for display on and around the straw bales.
