Continued austerity a threat to communities

CSV, the leading UK volunteering charity, has today (16^th April 2015) expressed concern about continued austerity and is calling for the next government to acknowledge the value of the volunteering sector given its critical role in helping to promote and sustain the well-being of individuals and communities.

In light of the political parties’ election manifestos, CSV is particularly concerned about how further austerity will impact on some of society’s most vulnerable members.

On Tuesday 27^th January the Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Manju Shahul-Hameed, will welcome volunteers from the local area to Croydon Town Hall, to celebrate their work in supporting families, disabled people, and older people in the community.

A project ran by CSV in Ipswich, which offers migrant women the opportunity to learn skills to increase their employability, was acknowledged by Ipswich MP Ben Gummer before Christmas, when he invited the members of the project to tour the Houses of Parliament.

Evolution, which has been run by Project Coordinator Gauri Desai since 2007, assists refugees, asylum seekers and migrant women, who have recently moved to the UK, with basic numeracy and literacy skills to help integrate them into their new community and increase their prospects of employment.

A new Volunteer Charter to increase the number of disabled volunteers across the UK has been launched with backing from the government.

The Disability Action Alliance (DAA) has joined with Community Service Volunteers (CSV) and Disability Rights UK (DRUK) to create the DAA Volunteer Charter and is calling for organisations to pledge their support.

Gauri Desai, a former Bollywood producer who now works for Community Service Volunteers (CSV) has won a prestigious Active Citizens of Europe Award (ACE) for her work with migrants in Ipswich.

Gauri, 45, came to Ipswich from India with her husband and son ten years ago and started volunteering with CSV to help her fit in with the Suffolk community, make friends and use her skills.

In recent weeks, outdoor volunteers across Scotland have been planning a series of environmental activities to welcome in the autumnal months.

A commemoration garden built in memory of the 100 year anniversary of the First World War will open at Oakdale Library, Poole, on Saturday 26^th July.

Thanks to a project by CSV’s Retired and Senior Volunteers, visitors will be able to enjoy a transformed garden home to poppies, planters and a plaque dedicated to the memory of the fallen.
