Scared Spitless - Part 4

It’s a story about fear. It’s a story about God. It’s a story about us. Matthew 25:14-30 is one of the toughest stories in all of scripture. When you read it casually, the plot makes you swallow hard because it doesn’t end very well. At the end, God seems angry and the guy who played it safe ends up on the wrong side of eternity! When you read it carefully, you could end up being wrapped in fear and doing all the right things for all the wrong reasons. So, what’s a person to do? Come and join me this weekend as we unpack a variety of different kinds of fear. At the end, we will all have a moment to make the most important choice of all – Jesus or Fear. Don’t be afraid – God will walk us through it.

Scared Spitless - Part 3

Fear has a language. It’s not the language of screams, bumps in the night, or that “Screech-Screech” sound from the movie, “Psycho”. No, the language of fear is soft, persistent and contagious. The language of fear is “worry”. Truthfully, worry is an expression of our fear of the future or the unknown. We justify worry by consoling ourselves that at least by worrying we are doing something and something is better than nothing – right? In to our illogical reasoning steps Jesus and He poses a question, “Who of you, by worrying, can add a single hour to his life?” Hmm….tough question. Need an answer? Let’s get together this weekend and talk about it. Don’t worry, Jesus already has an answer to His own question!

It was a simple request, "Let's go over to the other side of the lake." At least, it seemed like a simple request. What the disciples didn't know about Jesus' request was that He was about to take them to the school of faith, trust and pure unadulterated fear! This weekend, we continue our series, "Scared Spitless: Breaking the Grip of Paralyzing Fear", by examining the fear that we all deal with when we lose control. We are going to ask some tough questions, "Is control an illusion? How do we relinquish control to God? What does it mean to fear God? What happened to the guys on the lake!?" This weekend is HUGE for CTK. Before the next great ministry season at Christ the King gets underway, we are going to pause and take a moment to talk about vision. Vision is what Jesus used to make the disciples believe that they really could change the world. Vision is what the Apostle Paul used to inspire the church under great persecution. Vision is what God uses to mobilize us to reach our community for Him. Vision is a picture of the future that produces passion. So, with a little help from a true man of vision (Moses), we are going to gather this weekend to cast a life vision that is so scary, only God's people would dream of daring to make it happen! Walk this Way - Part 9

I am utterly convinced that the single greatest thing to radically impact and shape all of culture is a proper understanding of the person of Jesus. Here is a man who is misunderstood, misquoted, denied, resisted and run from; yet he is never ignored. It is impossible to ignore Jesus. As others try to squeeze the last moments out of summer, we will be re-centering on our mission and purpose through the person of Jesus. I am hoping this weekend will challenge misconceptions or pre-conceived notions of who Jesus is. May Jesus enlighten both those who follow Him, and those who are yet to make that step, as to who He is and what His purpose for us is. I am not sure what the weather will be like outside on our last weekend of summer, but I can tell you inside at CTK we will be looking at Jesus, as we wrap up our series, "Walk this Way." This weekend is going to be hot! It’s going to be hot because we are going to walk through a furnace with three guys who thought they were toast! We are going to have a front row seat to a “Crucible Moment” in which three guys decide that their convictions are worth more than the power of conformity. This truth of this story is applicable to every person but especially to those who face the challenge of choosing Jesus moment by moment in their family, on the job and at school. I have been asking myself a lot of questions lately – scary questions. Questions like, “Jesus, what do you want from me? God, am I hearing you correctly? Father, why do I seem to trip and fall? Dad, did you hear me? Friend, what am I doing wrong? Savior, will you intervene and help?” This week we are going to walk alongside of someone who found themselves suddenly thrust on to a leadership stage that they did not want to be on. God had a word for this man and it’s the same word for us – Be strong and of courage. So, I have a scary question for you for this weekend, “Are you willing to walk this way?” I’ll see you here

Well, it’s over. (Deep Sigh!) My summer vacation days are all used up and it’s back to a more regular routine. The truth is, I rather enjoy the regular routine of my life because a life that follows Jesus is anything but boring! This week, we will continue our summer series called “Walk this Way”. We are going to focus on how God calls us out of regular lives and into a dynamic and exciting faith adventure. We are going to watch as Jesus calls a group of regular guys to “Come, follow me”. We are going to figure out what Paul means when he says, “Follow my example as I follow that of Christ’s”. We are going to hear God ask us a series of questions, “Will you follow? Will you trust me? Obedience. It's not a word we use often in 2008, but it's a key word for our current series of messages called "Walk This Way". Two small sentences from the Bible have been running around in my head for the better part of a month. Here they are: "Enoch walked with God" and "Noah walked with God." They don't seem like much do they? Only four words long, but they prompt a flood of questions: How do you do that? How do you keep up? Is that actually possible? They don't mean to "walk" literally do they? How big are God's steps? Does God wear shoes? Why would you want to go on that walk? What happens when you do? This week we are starting a brand new series called, "Walk this Way". All through scripture God invites people to take a walk with Him. Some of the walks were to establish a trusting friendship. Others were for the purpose of God teaching the person about obedience. The final kind of walk happened when God sent a very specific person on a very personal mission. While all of the requests were different, they all ended up with the same outcome - the person who accepted God's invitation was never the same again. Well, here's the good news! Well, I have had a verse of scripture stuck in my brain for weeks. I have tried to make it go away by reading something else, thinking about something else and it just will not go away. We are going to do something together as a church family that Jesus asked us to do until He comes back. The last time I checked, Jesus hasn’t arrived and so we need to be obedient! One of my favorite things to do with my mom as a kid was to make cookies. I didn't care about the flour, the butter, or the sugar... My main concern was the chocolate chips! I got as many as I could into the batch, and I ate what was left over. Though the other ingredients weren't as exciting, the cookies wouldn't taste right without them, and I'm glad that my mom cared about more than just the chocolate! This weekend, we're going to take a look at the ingredients of worship. Some may excite you more than others, but it's good to know what the Bible says should go into the act and lifestyle worship. The question is, “What do you do when the people who are supposed to love you the most hurt you the worst?” Wow – tough question. So, what is the answer? Forgive and forget? Suffer in silence? Wage a cold war? Deny and defer? Just take it because, after all, they’re family….right? Marge Simpson, on the other hand, well, she's a cartoon and not even in the same ballpark. Honestly, neither one of them is the ideal when it comes to motherhood. Five years ago, almost to the day, I stepped into the role of Lead Pastor at Christ the King. I was scared, humbled, confused and challenged. On my first day in the office, one of our church elders stopped by and offered this advice: "Don't forget that the church belongs to Jesus." I have reminded myself of that fact many times in the past half decade. This week, we meet a young pastor named Tim who could really use some help. He too is just starting out as a pastor, and an older and wiser mentor lays out exactly what a pastor and his church should do when they want Jesus to run their church. Jesus has some unfinished business. Easter is over, death has been crushed, the resurrection has brought new life and the agenda of salvation has been accomplished. But, there is just one little detail that a guy named Peter would like to move beyond. He denied Jesus and now that Jesus is alive again well, they need to talk. What will Jesus say? What will happen to Peter? Can we find the agenda of Jesus in that conversation too? We only get to meet him 3 times in the whole Bible. The first time is late at night and he comes with questions. The second time is in the hostile territory of his religious friends and he come with a defense. The third time is at a funeral and he comes to pay his respects. His life has been changed forever by a man – Jesus. He has been changed and the resurrection hasn’t even happened yet! Sweet and sour. Bitter and sweet. Jumbo and shrimp. They are words that should not belong together but we match them up just the same. This weekend is Palm Sunday and we are going to celebrate one of the most poignant, bittersweet moments in the Bible. Jesus is being hailed as a King but He knows something - in just one week, the same people who are calling him a King will be calling for His crucifixion. It must have been heart-breaking. Come and join me this weekend and we expose the agenda of Jesus in John 12:24..."unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. Last week, we made the claim that Jesus had no hidden agenda. However, the truth from scripture is that Jesus would often do miraculous acts, then tell people not to share that secret with anyone. In a world where talk is cheap and where “what you see is rarely what you get”, it becomes increasingly hard to trust. But, deception is nothing new. All of human history has been marked with schemes, scams and secret motives. Then, along came Jesus. Though He often sought solitude, He had nothing to hide. He had no secret life. He made the boldest claims about himself and He is who He said He was. This Easter season, I invite you to meet a man who had no hidden agenda. As a guy, I struggle with I Corinthians 13. I read it and it all just seems a little soft for my liking. It also seems a little inconsistent to me because the guy who wrote it (Paul) was anything but cuddly! He was tough, abrasive, and honestly was a relational train wreck. So, I have to question…why is it in there? Could it be that Paul actually found a better way? Had Paul gone soft? Is he really asking me to get in touch with my feelings? Can I gag now! GPS 2 - Where Y'at? Part 3

I can’t speak for anyone other than myself, but I believe that most believers have a deep desire to want to please God. We want to do the right thing but in some areas – areas that God has spoken clearly and plainly about – we just decide to do our own thing. There is a word for it in scripture that we don’t like – rebellion. We convince ourselves, “I am not a rebel, I’m just not listening to God.” This week we are going to tackle the toughest area of Lordship that I have run into since I started pasturing in 1989. It’s not for the faint of heart, so my prayer is that God gives you the courage to come. I’ll see you here!

Have you ever thought about how many times you use faith in one day? I believe that the chair that I am sitting on right now will not collapse - that's a simple form of faith. I'm believing that when I arrive home later today, my family will still love me and that I haven't been disowned - that's another form of faith. I have faith that Jesus loves me even though I have never seen him with my physical eyes - that's another form of faith. When I take those things and add the voice of God clearly saying "walk by faith and not by sight," it appears to me that I better know exactly where I am at when it comes to FAITH! Throw in Indiana Jones, a story about a t-shirt in India that will touch your heart and a simple prayer of faith and you will need to prepare yourself for a weekend that could change your whole life. I remember the phone call like it was yesterday. A friend of mine was attempting to guide me to his location via some sketchy cell phone directions. I had no idea where I was going and he had no idea where I was currently located. Those two factors contributed to a one-word description of our situation: chaos! Finally, in desperation, my friend asked me the same question several times: "Grant, where are you at?" It took us a while but we finally got if all figured out. Over the next four weeks, I would like to pose that question to CTK – Where you at? I know the grammar is bad, but the question is very clear. There are some areas of life into which God has spoken with great clarity. We have been talking about the challenges of hearing God's voice. This week, we are going to hear exactly what God has said and then ask ourselves, "Where are we at in regard to obeying what God has asked of us?" Confused? No problem. In fact, it seems impossible and within seconds we open our eyes because our sight helps us know exactly where we are. So, with that being said, what is the deal with God asking us to walk by faith and not by sight? Doesn't that seem like an impossible request? This weekend, we are going to continue our series "GPS: Putting God in the Center of Life's Toughest Decisions" as we learn what it really means to walk by faith and not by sight. I truly believe that God wants his children to learn to walk their "faith walk" and leave behind our natural tendency to use this world as our source of direction. There is nothing more purposeful in life than experiencing God. This week we continue our new series, GPS: Putting God in the Center of Life’s Toughest Decisions. In this second part of the series we will be focusing on how God speaks, posturing ourselves so we can hear God’s voice and, most importantly, discover what God is saying to our lives today. I believe if we listen, believe, and obey God’s voice we will experience God. Join us this weekend as we start the year off by listening to God. I got a GPS for my birthday! It is the most amazing little gizmo that I have ever used and it comes with an amazing promise – it promises that I will NEVER be lost again! Somehow, I think the company may be overstating their gizmo’s ability to keep me on the straight and narrow, but I (and my wife) thank them for their sentiment. This series is all about finding direction. It’s about hearing God’s voice and following His plan. It’s about being confident that even when we make a wrong decision, that we still are guided by a very right God. Wow! I’m still somewhat speechless. 147 people were obedient to Jesus and were baptized on the weekend. For the record, it’s not the number that is important – it’s the obedience! This weekend, we are going to turn the corner into Romans 8. I love this chapter! It’s full of joy, passion, vitality and practical instruction on how to make our new identity stick. Come and join me as we ditch the condemnation and fully embrace our adoption by God. Let’s gather together and celebrate the Father who always has room for more in His family. I’ll see you here.
