London – 3 September 2025: ION Commodities, a global leader in energy and commodity management solutions, is relaunching Softmar as a SaaS platform, expanding beyond chartering and operations to address the new realities of freight management. Volatility, sanctions, and tougher emissions and regulatory rules are redefining freight markets. Rate swings are squeezing shipowners’ margins, while traders grapple with rising costs and compliance obligations. This unpredictability has amplified freight’s role, making it one of the most critical variables in global commodity supply chains. Firms relying on spreadsheets, ERP systems, or static models often underestimate their exposure — leaving them vulnerable to losses and compliance failures. Softmar addresses these challenges by unifying chartering, voyage management, and freight risk management across dry bulk, liquids, and gas commodities in a single solution. A key enhancement is the introduction of Profit-at-Risk (PaR) analytics, designed specifically for illiquid freight markets to provide a more accurate, forward-looking view of freight exposure. The enhanced Softmar solution also adds carbon emissions tracking, enabling companies to monitor and manage environmental costs. Softmar can integrate freight activity with ION’s Commodity Trading and Risk Management (CTRM) solutions, ensuring end-to-end supply chain visibility resulting in improved decision making and better risk control. Softmar... continue reading

Amongst the many commodity-focused solutions marketed by Quoreka is its Insight Stockyard and Terminal Management solution, which uses 3D digital technology to optimize bulk commodity handling for tier 1 iron ore miners. It was originally acquired by Eka back in 2013 and now forms an important part of the Quoreka offerings. I recently chatted with Quoreka’s Ben Koch to learn more about the solution. “The solution helps operational teams avoid contract penalties, capture quality premiums, and improve hedging accuracy by providing real-time visibility into material composition and blending capabilities,” he told me. Currently, the Quoreka product serves most large storage and handling companies in Australia for agriculture and processes significant portions of global iron ore, bauxite, and coal production as well. Core modules include 3D ACS (anti-collision system), 3D SMS (stockpile management system), 3D QMS (quality management system), and SAC (Site Automation Control). Ben emphasized the solution handles everything from making stockyards fully autonomous to advanced material tracking, inventory management, quality control, and blending. Quoreka innovated stockyard management by analyzing and controlling operations in three dimensions rather than traditional 2D approaches, he explained. Ben described its approach to me as a “digital shadow” that understands everything happening at facilities in... continue reading

Recently, I found it interesting to compare UK and US policies by looking at two Financial Times articles published at roughly the same time: Donald Trump’s attacks on renewables sector quash nearly $19bn worth of projects UK green power surges with record approvals for new renewable energy capacity The first article focuses on criticism of the US administration’s decision to cut investments in new renewable projects while simultaneously trying to ensure the availability of cheap energy for the growing AI industry. According to the article, clean energy projects worth $18.6bn have been cancelled this year, compared with just $827mn in 2024, based on data from Atlas Public Policy’s Clean Economy Tracker. Investment announcements also fell by nearly 20%, to $15.8bn this year, down from $20.9bn in the same period of 2024. The article stresses that while demand for energy to power the AI boom will continue to rise, the US risks permanently damaging its renewables sector, which often provides the cheapest and fastest energy source to deploy. The UK-focused article, in contrast, praises the government’s efforts to support renewable energy growth. More than 16.1 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity received planning permission in the second quarter of this year, representing... continue reading

26 August 2025, Zug: Previse Systems, a leading provider of next-generation Energy Trading & Risk Management (ETRM) software, has secured growth capital from Lightrock to accelerate its expansion and support the rising demand from energy companies facing increasingly complex market exposures. Lightrock, a global sustainable investment platform, has provided equity financing in return for a minority stake in Previse Systems. This strategic investment will strengthen the company’s ability to deliver innovative solutions, mature its operations, and expand its market presence. Lightrock will utilise its networks and value creation capabilities to support Previse Systems’ growth in close collaboration with the company’s founders, who retain control of the business. Previse Systems delivers a modern, cloud-native ETRM solution built for today’s energy markets. Rapid load growth, renewable intermittency, and the now bi-directional nature of generation have introduced greater price volatility and sharply higher intraday trading volumes. As a result, energy companies must now process and act on vastly larger data sets in real time to both seize opportunities and manage risks.
It has been quite a while since we had talked with anyone at all over at Allegro and so there was quite a bit of catch up required in our recent call. We spoke with ION’s Mike Ravo and Dawson Cooper who told us that post-acquisition, ION had shifted Allegro’s strategy from rapid growth across all commodities to focusing on areas where Allegro had the strongest functionality. That strategy also emphasized a “customer for life” approach with existing customer base expansion rather than pure market share growth,” they said. Given the products’ functional footprint and natural strengths, its primary focus remains oil, natural gas, power and environmental products markets with strong global presence in power sector. “Demand is driven by industry volatility, new regulations, and companies transitioning from tactical physical operations to forward risk management,” Mike Ravo, product owner, told us. Demand for the software remains strong. Allegro continues to utilize the Microsoft .NET stack with C# programming language used for customer extensibility. Cloud adoption across customers in general is building momentum, including ION Cloud, they told us. To encourage customers, ION is continuing to invest in cloud-native capabilities including Docker deployment for faster, more efficient cloud implementation and its... continue reading

These days in energy and commodities, data is everywhere and comes in many formats, meaning that the data governance function at any company is becoming an increasingly critical function. ComTech has tracked data management and observed that it has become a major focus for many companies in the space and yet, there are so many aspects to the issue of data management that it is tough area to crack. One area that has interest for ComTech is in how having high-quality data can enhance the success of enterprise software implementations. Data conversion and loading is a feature of all new system implementation projects – even at greenfield sites where the metadata still needs to be loaded. However, implementing CTRM, Commodity Management – and even credit solutions, which utilise or source data across the enterprise, face the challenges of aligning data. Energy companies, in particular, often have very fragmented data from across multiple departments and geographic locations due to their decentralized and often siloed nature of systems usage. Common data inconsistencies include everything from counterparty names spelled differently across systems to mismatched invoice numbers, and incomplete market data. Ultimately, AI could prove to have significant value in this area and can... continue reading
