The premise of the book revolves around Martin Luther’s observation that God most certainly preaches the Gospel through music. “Without a sense of that high purpose for music in Lutheran worship, the practice of Lutheran Church music is too often less than it could be, with the treasure of Lutheran music too frequently ignored, and the people deprived of singing and hearing what is an exceptional body of theologically rich music that proclaims the Word of God,” explains Zager in the Introduction of the book.
The book is $16.99 and may be ordered through the Concordia Theological Seminary Bookstore by emailing CTSBookstore@ctsfw.edu or phoning 260-452-2160.

Music at the Seminary
Sunday, January 20–Epiphany Choral Evening Prayer with the Seminary Kantorei at 4:00 p.m. in Kramer Chapel
Wednesday, January 23–Symposia Choral Vespers with the Seminary Schola Cantorum at 5:30 p.m. in Kramer Chapel.
Thursday, January 24–Symposia Vespers and Organ Recital at 4:30 p.m. in Kramer Chapel. Katie Timm of Bloomington, Indiana, will be the guest recitalist. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts in organ performance and sacred music at Indiana University.
There is no charge for these events. For additional information email Music@ctsfw.edu or phone 260-452-2224.

Registration for Christ Academy—High School 2013 opened January 1.
News: CTS Specific Ministry Pastors Complete Studies

For Immediate Release
November 30, 2012

FORT WAYNE, IN (CTS)—On November 6, 2012, the Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, community celebrated as the first cohort of students completed their studies in the Specific Ministry Pastor (SMP) Program. The SMP program is a distance-education program designed to meet the need to train pastors in context for ministry and mission opportunities in the church. The members of the Alpha Cohort are:

Rev. Joseph Atwater, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, San Diego, Calif.
Rev. Jason Bauer, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Interlochen, Mich.
Rev. James Edwards, Gethsemane Lutheran Church, La Crescenta, Calif.
Rev. Thurman Frey, Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Towson, Md.
Rev. Daniel Grissom, Trinity Lutheran Church, Lisle. Ill.
Rev. Thomas Haas, Grace Lutheran Church, Orange, Texas
Rev. John Hansen, Peace Lutheran Church, Ludington, Mich.
Rev. Jeffrey Howell, St. Paul Lutheran Church, Chicago, Ill.
Rev. Lance Irey, Christ Lutheran Church, Costa Mesa, Calif.
Rev. Robert Jorg, Faith Lutheran Church, Whitehall, Mich.
Rev. Lutheran Church, Roselle, Ill.
Rev. Daniel Rathmun, St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Detroit, Mich.

“We are delighted to honor the first class of SMP students to complete their studies at CTS. Not only have they been serving faithfully in their places of ministry for two years of vicarage and up to two years as pastors, but have also helped us immeasurably in assessing how the program should go forward,” commented Dr. Carl C. Fickenscher II, supervisor of the SMP Program at CTS. And the program has progressed with four more groups of SMP students currently studying at CTS.

This group of trailblazers has also been instrumental in helping Fickenscher form future goals for the program. “In particular observing the Alpha Cohort has helped me formulate four goals I have for the SMP program:

To enable our SMP students to know that in every sense they are CTS students;

To engage fully the mentors in the program;

To build excitement among our faculty for teaching these students using a combination of residential intensives and online technology;

And to achieve real excellence in the teaching/learning experience.”

More information about the SMP program at CTS can be found at ctsfw.edu/SMP or by contacting the CTS Office of Admission at Admission@ctsfw.edu or 800-481-2155.

News: CTS Press Publishes Two Wars We Must Not Lose

For Immediate Release
November 1, 2012

FORT WAYNE, IN (CTS)—Secularism and the rise of Islam around the world are hot-button issues in society today. In a response to both, Concordia Theological Seminary Press has published Two Wars We Must Not Lose by Mr. Bill Hecht. He has worked more than 40 years in Washington, D.C., first as a congressional aide and then as a lobbyist. He also served as a Lutheran pastor in Illinois and Oklahoma until 1967. After working in the Reagan for President Campaign, he started Hecht, Spencer & Associates in 1981 and still serves as its president.

“In his career on Capitol Hill, he has had unparalleled access to and knowledge of every significant political person and event in Washington D.C., over the past 40 years,” commented the Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, president, The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. “If I could recommend one book for clergy and laity to read on the crisis of the American experience, how we got here, and what we must do, hands down, this book is it.”

“Whether or not you agree with all of Bill Hecht’s points, there is no question that he is uniquely positioned, as a theologically trained LCMS Lutheran, to interpret past, present and future challenges,” says the Rev. Dr. Lawrence R. Rast Jr., president, Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne.

Mr. Hecht will be on the CTS campus for a book signing event and to present “The Christian Challenge in the Public Square: A Lutheran Voice,” on January 24, 2013, as part of the 36th Annual Symposium on The Lutheran Confessions.

Copies of the book ($14.95 each, plus shipping) may be ordered by going online to www.ctsfw.edu/TwoWars, or by phoning 260-452-2105.
News: CTS Professor Offers Response to Gospel of Jesus’ Wife

For Immediate Release
September 26, 2012

FORT WAYNE, IN (CTS)—In the last several days much has been circulated concerning a small, papyrus fragment of Coptic text which has been dubbed the Gospel of Jesus’ Wife by Professor Karen King of Harvard Divinity School. These types of “finds” always create quite a stir and that is why Dr. Charles Gieschen, Academic Dean and Professor of Exegetical Theology at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana, has studied this material and offered a brief analysis of its significance. His response may be read and downloaded at www.ctsfw.edu/response-to-the-gospel-of-jesus-wife.

Dr. Gieschen, who earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan (1995) where his studies included the Coptic language and Gnostic writings, is an excellent resource for this topic. He has examined the digital image of this fragment, King's article and some early feedback of other scholars. His brief response walks the reader through the history of the fragment, discusses the various interpretations and comments on the import of the fragment. Dr. Gieschen concludes, “This fragment, therefore, may assist us in understanding the teaching of a Gnostic group concerning Jesus and His marital status, but it does not help us to understand the teaching of the historical Jesus or His actual marital status.”

The best place to look for early and historically reliable evidence of Jesus' life, as Dr. Gieschen notes, is the four canonical Gospels. This fragment does nothing to displace the testimony of these Gospels that Jesus supported marriage as a divine institution, but was not himself married.
