Coventry triumph with Mount Nod under 9s

SPIRITS were far from dampened by the torrential rain over last weekend with more than 80 teams competed in the opening day of the ninth annual Weddington Thistle six-a-side tournament.

But while the action on the Saturday provided plenty of exciting action in continuous drizzle and reached a conclusion, Sunday's competition was rained off and is now set to take place on July 12.

Eastern Green's Carly Reid on London Olympics course

COVENTRY'S Carly Reid has made the first stride towards saddling herself with a place in the British Eventing squad for the 2012 London Olympics.

Thanks to her talents and that of her outstanding mount - Regent Lad - the 25-year-old from Eastern Green was placed in every competition entered last season.

That reliability and quality of performance has put eight-year-old Regent Lad in among the Equine Pathway for 2012 Olympics which is a long list of possible candidates in which 14,500 horses are registered with British Eventing but only 84 achieved the qualifying criteria.

CLUB professional Mike Tarn and Alps Tour player Mark Davies took part in an annual event at Coventry Hearsall to help raise money for charity.

Tarn partnered president Barry Littlewood and Davies teamed up with captain Bob Esslemont for a curtain-raiser to the season, in aid of the Battens Disease Family Association.

Coventry Hearsall men (from left) Bob Esslemont, Mark Davies, Mike Tarn, Barry Littlewood.

Bob said: "The occasion coincided with Mark's 50th birthday and we spoiled his celebration somewhat by winning 3&2. The result was irrelevant, however, with the real winner being my charity choice, which benefited to the tune of £90."

Callum Magee hat-trick caps Eagles' big fightback against Broad Lane's Firefighters

CALLUM MAGEE'S hat-trick led Bedworth Eagles back from the dead to clinch a dramatic 4-3 victory against Firefighters in the first game of their double-header at Nicholas Chamberlaine School.

Jonny Beasley's brace and Luke Grealy's opener had given Firefighters the best possible start, but Magee's treble and Tom Green's curler pegged the visitors back and secured three points for Eagles.

Eagles began the brighter of the two teams, with Michael Sadler shooting narrowly wide after beating James Killeen.

AN injury-time try gave Bablake a dramatic victory, and the Robert Askill Memorial Trophy, in the first of this season's Coventry Schools finals played at the Butts Park Arena.

Last year's U15 champions Woodlands led three times in a see-saw encounter and looked on course for another title when Sam Chare and Mike Tyrrell linked to send in Kyle Timms for an unconverted try and a 13-10 advantage.
