Alumni Endowed Scholarship Awards

Greetings to All Community of Christ Graceland Supporters!

Here is an important announcement about a potential additional scholarship for any future Graceland student who is the son or daughter of a Graceland alum. Even with the Study and Faith Scholarship program, some families have concerns about the cost of education. Please post this and announce it in your congregations. This scholarship could help make the difference for a student who deeply wants to attend the church’s university.

Don't leave money on the table and take advantage of your heritage! All prospective Graceland University students for this fall are encouraged to apply for the Alumni Endowed Scholarship Awards. Please check out Graceland’s web page at http://www.graceland.edu/pdf/financialaid/2012AlumniEndowedScholarshipApp.pdf or contact the GU Alumni programs office at 641-784-5258 or email alumni@graceland.edu for an application. The deadline for applying is March 15, so please act fast to take advantage of this outstanding financial aid opportunity.

Guest Teacher/Minister: Vickie MacArthur has been practicing and teaching yoga and meditation for the past 15 years and sees yoga as a spiritual path healing body, mind and spirit. (www.spiritinmotionyoga.ca)

Take time out to nurture body, mind and spirit through the time‐honored practices of yoga and meditation. Learn gentle stretches and breathing practices to release tension and discomfort in the body as well as prayer and meditation to calm and focus the mind.

Fall in love with your “Divine Self” and connect to that place of peace and stillness where God lives and breathes in you. It is from this deep wellspring of stillness and joy, that we can live life more abundantly and learn to love others more deeply.

The Meadow Ridge History Project:

A Celebration of Remembrance

The Meadow Ridge congregation celebrated three of their members last Sunday with a service of celebration and remembrance. Grace Suffern, Mary Gooden and Jean Cornish were honored for their lifetime commitments to God, the church and their church communities.

Each of the 3 ladies were interviewed on camera about their lives in the church and the videos were played during the service.

The CWM Fundraising initiative to raise $30,000 in three years to build three schools is getting there. 18 months after launch we are at $24,148. We only have $5,852 yet to raise. WAY to GO CWM! Thanks so much. I would like everyone to know that funds for the first two school rooms have already been sent. We are excited about getting the project completed and the difference it will make in the lives of the students in Honduras. We will keep you posted. Thank you CWM fundraisers.

On Friday, join us from 7-9pm for Sacred Song Circle: community sound and silence. We begin on a single note and journey together through simple chants and songs, supported by resonant listening practices. No previous musical or sound experience necessary! The evening will be led by Pamela L. Alexander, Voice & Song Facilitator of Compassionate Community VOICE. Pamela enjoys a life-long participation in music and vocal play through improvised sound, original songs, spoken word & world music. In her voice facilitation work, she engages the human speaking/singing voice to offer experiences of authentic self-expression and resonant listening—practices that nourish individuals and build connected communities.

On Saturday from 9 til 4 we will enjoy a day of gentle yoga, relaxation. Healthy wholesome food will be served for lunch to nourish body and soul. Lunch will be shared silently! You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in walking meditation, making a prayer meditation bracelet from authentic crystals, or get introduced to Qigong or Reiki.

Complete the weekend by experiencing the “Divine Light Invocation”, a healing prayer and meditation for yourself and others on Sunday, from 10-12.

Keeping the church connected

Join in “Hearing Good News…Being Good News!” the Presidency’s Sunday, April 15 address to the worldwide church at 6:00 p.m. (CDT) during an inspirational worship at the Temple in Independence, Missouri. The event will be webcast live in English, French, and Spanish. President Steve Veazey will share testimony about the increasingly successful implementation of the mission initiatives. He will also share about the vision for church life and mission presented in Doctrine and Covenants 164 and what it truly means to be community through which Jesus Christ continues his mission in the world today. He will also share some personal perspective with nations preparing for national conferences in 2012 and 2013.

Presidents Schaal and Savage will also share “good news.” Highlights will include the Young Adult Vision Project, church growth through membership confirmations, launch of the Leaders of Congregations in Mission project, and unveiling the “look” of the hymnal that will launch in 2013. The guide is designed to help pastors and congregational leaders “live into” shared practices of Christian discipleship that create a congregational culture shaped by the mission of Jesus Christ, engage the gifts of all ages in mission, and carry out the basic elements of organization and administration required for a well-functioning congregation. Join the Hymnal Team and volunteers for one or all of the Joyful Noise Workshops. The first workshop is free and will be held February 11–12 at Community of Christ Temple, Independence, Missouri. Musicians, song leaders, instrumentalists, and worship leaders will explore the diverse musical styles, languages, guitar chords, and arrangements in the new hymnal that will debut in 2013. Familiarize yourself with theological content, scripture references, musical styles, worship-planning skills, topical indexes, and more! For those who don't know me, my name is Rachelle Smalldon and I have recently been employed by the Canada West Mission Centre in the role of Field Specialist based in Edmonton. Some of my new responsibilities in the Mission Centre involve directing the youth summer camps -particularly Senior High Camp at Hills of Peace and the Canada West group attending SPECTACULAR at Graceland University in July 2012.

Senior High Camp is scheduled for July 1-7, 2012

Spec is scheduled for July 19-29, 2012 (travel dates included)

I am looking to collect any names and contact info for youth who might be eligible to attend either Senior High Camp or Spectacular - basically anyone in grades 10-12 (ages 15-18).

Vancouver member wins full entrance scholarship to University of Cambridge, England

Tristan Downing is about to attend the same university as Sir Isaac Newton, Bertrand Russell, Charles Darwin and Stephen Hawking.

Semiahmoo Secondary IB student Tristan Downing won a $150,000 University of Cambridge scholarship.

And he's doing it on a full-ride $150,000 scholarship, courtesy of the Blyth Cambridge Commonwealth Trust.

The 17-year-old Semiahmoo Secondary senior is one of only three Canadians to be awarded the full entrance scholarship to the University of Cambridge. The scholarship is presented annually to students who show academic excellence, intellectual depth, personal integrity and success beyond their school studies.

Tristan's scholarship application included a 1,000-word essay, three letters of recommendation, a list of his academic achievements and a grueling interview with the scholarship selection committee.

Tristan is a student in Semiahmoo's International Baccalaureate program. IB program co-ordinator Lynne Porpaczy says Tristan has considerable natural talent, but also works hard and finds time to contribute to his community by coaching sailing at Crescent Beach and playing the piano at his church.

"He inspires me when he describes his goal to become an engineer so he can find practical ways to help build a more sustainable future and work with struggling communities through Engineers Without Borders. I believe Tristan will use this award and opportunity for a very worthy purpose."

Porpaczy adds that she's grateful for scholarship founder Sam Blyth's recognition of Tristan's work and academic potential.

Tristan is the son of Rod and Willa Downing.

We begin on a single note and journey together through simple chants and songs, supported by resonant listening practices. No previous musical or sound experience necessary! The evening will be led by Pamela L. Alexander, Voice & Song Facilitator of Compassionate Community VOICE. Pamela enjoys a life-long participation in music and vocal play through improvised sound, original songs, spoken word & world music. In her voice facilitation work, she engages the human speaking/singing voice to offer experiences of authentic self-expression and resonant listening—practices that nourish individuals and build connected communities.

Nurture your spirit and ignite your passion for God through simple but sacred spiritual practices. Let go of the past and connect to the underlying reality of the present moment. As we begin to awaken to God's creative potential within us, we discover that we are becoming more like that which is creating us! Together we can evolve and grow. Together we can "harness for God the energies of love".

Calgary March 9-11

Falling in Love with your “Divine Self”

The weekend will begin with a Sacred Singing Circle on Friday evening led by Pamela Alexander. Come and participate in songs and chants dedicated to peace. Saturday will begin with a gentle morning yoga session led by Vickie MacArthur (www.spiritinmotionyoga.ca), followed by various workshops that explore practices like Mindfulness Meditation, Tai Chi, Walking Meditation, Prayer Journaling, and Deep Relaxation as well as a class to make your own Meditation Bracelet. Lunch will be served and eaten in silence as a meditative practice. Sunday morning will begin with a Labyrinth Meditation, then will move into a Service of “Nurturing Spirit in Community”.

Vancouver March 23-25

“The Evolution of Spirit”

This weekend will begin with a movie Friday night. Saturday will begin with a gentle morning yoga session led by Vickie MacArthur (www.spiritinmotionyoga.ca), followed by various workshops. Lunch will be served and eaten in silence as a meditative practice. Saturday evening following dinner we will finish with a Sacred Singing Circle led by Pamela Alexander. Sunday morning will begin with a Labyrinth Meditation ,followed by a seated meditation in the sanctuary then we’ll move into a Service including our Evolution of Spirit Theme.

Within the next day a new calendar year will begin. As with previous year-end newsletter editions, this one will skip most overall 2011 reflections since they can be found both on traditional news sources and via the internet (plus this won’t be sent until early in the New Year anyway).

However again I do want to pause to THANK all who have taken action during the year. As noted in several e-mails it has made a difference!

Secondly I wish again to raise the notion of HOPE -- one of the driving influences in life. It is the acknowledgement that we are not so prescient as to know the future with certainty, combined with the belief that life-giving dynamics will eventually prevail over the grotesque distortions and misuse of life. And when hope moves from being an unattached, vague feeling, to a firm resolve, then it can anchor us to maximize life’s possibilities for the poor and marginalized around the world. May we make 2012 a well-anchored, hope-filled year!

DARFUR & SUDAN – WHAT KIND OF FUTURE?

The conflict in Darfur has been going on for almost nine years now. For those new to this newsletter Darfur was selected as our longitudinal focus – you can read the reasons for that choice at: http://untilall.org/uwaa-105.htm. As mentioned last month both Darfur and Sudan in general have slipped below the media’s radar for some time, even though atrocities continue. The most notable change since last month was that the leader of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) – Kahlil Ibrahim – was killed on December 24. As with most rebel leaders he was no angel, having reportedly fought briefly in Libya for Gaddafi. But because JEM had become the most powerful rebel group and a successor to him is unlikely to command the same influence, this has the potential to shift the power dynamics and not likely in a positive way.

It does however reinforce the need for the international community to recalibrate its policy and focus as was mentioned last month. In fact the one action for this month is actually a repeat from last month. It has been extended due to these changing dynamics as well as the continued bombing and clashes by the Sudanese government on its southern border. So if you didn’t take the action last month, due to its very tight time frame, please consider taking the action now.

Specifically you can add your voice for a revised U.S. policy by signing the following petition. The petition arose after 62 members of Congress sent a letter to US President Obama, asking him to recalibrate the US policy on Darfur and Sudan. As noted last month, with Sudan’s debt and other financial problems, there is definite leverage possible:

A TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO BREAK THE SILENCE

I want to end this newsletter reinforcing in a tangible way the notion of hope. Basil Al-Sayid, a 24-year-old Syrian, was in many ways a very ordinary person – a carpenter by trade (or maybe worked in an aluminum plant). But he also worked as a citizen journalist, shooting video of the Syrian crackdown on its own people. He knew the dangers but also knew that with Syria’s lock on power and information, the only way for the world to know about the violence of the regime was to take video himself (along with a network of others). He reportedly produced hundreds of hours of footage. Unfortunately the last time his camera was on, he was shot by a sniper and later died in hospital.

The reported footage of his final clip is below. I include it as a tribute to all such courageous people around the world (I also include it because there is no blood and gore – it is as if he tripped and fell – life simply ended, a tragedy). I hope every time I see grainy footage of such scenes I will remember the risk that was taken to capture the film. And of course alongside Basil are the more than 5000 Syrian protestors who have been killed in the crackdown. And behind that are all the others who have been detained, tortured, disappeared in Syria and in all the other conflict areas around the world. Life does inch forward but in far too many places it is by agonizing lurches.

Yet when listening to people talk of Basil or listening to other people like Basil, whether in Syria or elsewhere, they remain tenaciously hopeful – they realize their struggle could be long and they may not even prevail this time. But their eyes burn with the assurance that someday better conditions shall prevail. That is well-grounded hope.

New President and CEO for Outreach International

On December 5, the Board of Directors of Outreach International announced the appointment of Kevin Prine, PhD, as President and Chief Executive Officer. Prine assumes his new role on January 1, 2012.

“Kevin is a superb leader and a gifted communicator; he brings extraordinary energy, intellect and compassion to the mission of Outreach International,” said Harry Ashenhurst, chairman of the board of directors.

Listen to the music of a new Advent hymn that will be featured in the new Community of Christ Hymnal. The words and music to "Come and Bring Light" were written by Kevin Kell and the hymn is performed by the Center Place Singers.
In anticipation of the new hymnal's availability in 2013, several "Joyful Noise" workshops will be held around the USA in 2012. The first one will be held at the Temple, February 11-12, 2012. Come and familiarize yourself with the new hymnal's musical styles, worship planning techniques, theological content, topics, and more.

Women’s Christmas Breakfast in Vancouver

Nearly 50 women aged 3 to 93 gathered to celebrate Christmas in our time honored tradition in Vancouver this past Saturday morning.

We had the opportunity to visit with friends and sing Christmas Carols

Eat great food prepared by David , Robert ,Vic , Brian and Joel!

Watch the skit “The Shelter” performed by Debra Donohue, Kelly Teal and Kathy McAdam about the women who use the Surrey Women’s Shelter. And learn about real life – heartbreaking stories - of women who use the Surrey Women’s Shelter from Jamie Cooper who works at the shelter. We raised money at the breakfast for the shelter and this coming Sunday we’ll prepare ‘stockings’ for the women.

The entertainment was exceptional as usual. Kat Goheen sang ‘Oh Holy Night’ and a few members of the City Soul Choir sang for us too.

DARFUR & SUDAN – COMPREHENSIVE PEACE

While Sudan has largely been out of the spotlight, its conflicts have continued. One of the more notable events in Sudan has been the uniting of rebel groups on three of Sudan’s peripheries (West {Darfur}, East and South; for more details see http://untilall.org/Darfur.htm#B.%20CurrentStatus). This united group is called the Sudan Revolutionary Force (SRF) and was in Washington recently to outline a comprehensive resolution to Sudan’s multiple conflicts – bombings in Darfur and attacks within the camps; unrest in the East; and fighting that verges on ethnic cleansing and also civil war in the southern areas of S. Kordofan and Blue Nile state.

From that meeting, 62 members of Congress have sent a letter to US President Obama, asking him to recalibrate the US policy on Darfur and Sudan. Separately, Professor Eric Reeves has indicated that significant leverage still exists regarding Sudan’s substantial debt. You can add your voice for a revised policy by signing the following petition BEFORE Dec. 5, although as long as link remains valid, continue to sign after Dec. 5, as sometimes they will send a second notice if support continues:

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL – TWO ACTIONS

For anyone using social media, once you have sent a note you probably don't expect the police to come knocking on your door. But that's what happened to Jabbar Savalan, a 20-year-old Azerbaijani student activist framed and punished by his government for calling for a protest on Facebook.

Action 1: Amnesty wants to shine the spotlight on the Azerbaijan government's assault upon Jabbar’s right to freedom of expression. Please read the details in the link below and consider signing the petition.
Action 2: Write for Rights: Once a year this newsletter likes to highlight the work of Amnesty International. Amid all the tangled global issues to be addressed, it is also necessary to support the individuals who innocently get caught in the oppressive and unjust forces. So as well as signing the petition, consider being part of AI’s annual Write for Rights, Dec 3-11. Simply go to your country’s Amnesty site or do an internet search to find instructions – you can join an existing group, create a group or do it individually.

EGYPT, TAHRIR SQUARE, AND ELECTIONS

Power is almost never given up easily, as evidenced by the recent events in Egypt. While during the early days of Egypt’s protests, the military was seen as a stabilizer during Mubarek’s ouster, it now appears more of a carry-over, intent on retaining power over any Parliament and elections. While it was a thrill for the Egyptians to vote in relatively free circumstances, the quick timetable played into the hands of long-time organized groups like the Muslim Brotherhood (& the more radical Salafists), and against the newer Tahrir-base pro-democracy and reform groups, which are becoming more marginalized. While some hope the Muslim Brotherhood will take a moderate approach, more akin to Tunisia, the comparison is weak. The telling point will be more what the military will do if dynamics move toward more radical Islam, since the military gains much funding from the U.S. Stay tuned – the unfolding of Egypt’s future direction has barely begun.

The most useful web-based action to assist in a decent future for Egypt has passed for now. But in the tradition of using this newsletter also to probe unusual angles of action, there is an opportunity to sign a petition to the company that provides much of the teargas to Egypt’s military. It asks the company to stop supplying teargas as it is being used to suppress the legitimate protests. While realistically the action is susceptible on several points, it is given for those who nonetheless wish to explore whatever impact it may have on the company.

MAKE AID MORE TRANSPARENT

International aid cannot solve all our problems, although done properly it can make a real difference, saving lives, helping people help themselves out of severe poverty and averting the worst outcomes of disasters. But a large concern hovering around aid is the issue of transparency. Along with all the wonderful, effective and efficient organizations there are also other efforts filled with corruption and mismanagement. Far too much aid goes straight to governments or agencies that lack credible accountability or is “tied aid” (aid that is only given with strings attached that primarily benefits the donor country). The petition below calls on the U.S. to join the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI), thereby ensuring that the aid it sends becomes more transparent and accountable.

OCCUPY WALL STREET – POTENTIAL & PITFALLS

Since early September I have followed the ‘Occupy Wall Street” movement (hereafter #Occupy, due to its expansion into hundreds of cities). Unfortunately the topic just missed comment in the September newsletter. So I want to raise a few brief issues in this newsletter, with a more detailed analysis soon to appear on the newsletter’s blog (http://untilall.org/blogs/newsletter/).

To start, I applaud the overall intuition of #Occupy - that our political and economic systems as expressed in the U.S. and also globally, are so at odds with any sense of a decent society, that it compelled people to take to the streets. Whether that intuition will translate into either a seismic shift or any form of positive change, will be explored in the upcoming blog. In this newsletter I simply want to address two types of dismissive reactions to #Occupy. For the most part my observations come from my time at my local #Occupy, in Vancouver, Canada and digesting efforts elsewhere. If nothing else, being in Canada made for interesting #Occupy considerations, given that Canada, with its tighter banking regulations, didn’t suffer the same collapse and consequent loss of people’s homes and jobs that occurred in the Western world’s original epicenter of the U.S. (Canada does have the distinction, however, of the largest rising gap between the rich and poor).

One form of comment - dismissive - relates to the “type” of person at the #Occupy site. The labels vary – lazy, shiftless, drug-addicted, naïve, homeless, and so on. What I found was a wide variety of people, and it shifted. It started with those naturally inclined to address the above intuition – mainly young people but also a cross-section of ages, income levels and employment status. Then gradually some homeless came and stayed. The #Occupy group, seeing them simply as part of the 99%, welcomed them. As one of the homeless said “This is the first time I have ever felt safe.” But it did bring in some drug-overdose issues. The media focused on it and another stereotype was reinforced (as though the person wouldn’t likely have otherwise overdosed in some dingy alley). To me the story was an indictment of society and not of #Occupy.

The second form of comment – impatient - relates to the attempt at a “leaderless” movement and the lack of immediately articulated goals. I found this a refreshing effort. The movement was trying to learn from history and its various forms of paternalism, colonialism, etc., with both its associated overt means of power, hidden power structures and subtle forms of language. For myself as an extreme goal-focused-with-appropriate-process person, I do admit to frustration at the slow pace and mis-cues. Personally now that societal patience has run out, I can only hope that #Occupy continues to grapple with this very complex dynamic and re-emerges with a more cogent dynamic. If not, our society will be the less for it.

As a final note, I found parallels between #Occupy’s “leaderless” attempts and our church’s recent efforts at more inclusive dialogue, primarily during World Conference pre-legislative sessions and also Listening Circles. In some ways we have had more experience, albeit with a much different size of group; and in some ways we could learn from some of the signaling mechanism to assess consensus. I hope both efforts continue to mature. Of course there are many other issues related to the church that must await further discussion.

Abolish Poverty, End Suffering Aid
to Central America, Africa, and Turkey

A total of $35,000 in aid—funded through your contributions to the Abolish Poverty, End Suffering mission initiative—is providing relief in Central America, Africa, and Turkey.

Central America Flood Relief
Oblation and World Hunger Fund grants equaling $20,000 will provide continued relief from October flooding in Central America. This funding will be distributed through church affiliate World Accord, providing relief in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. This grant follows Oblation funds shared in October that focused aid on church families in El Salvador. (Read more at www.CofChrist.org/news/2011/dec/floodrelief.asp.)

Famine Aid to Horn of Africa
Oblation aid of $10,000 will provide continued drought and famine relief in the Horn of Africa. This will help continue Mercy Corps International’s efforts that we initially supported in July with $20,000 from Oblation. (Read more at www.CofChrist.org/news/2011/dec/faminerelief.asp.)

Earthquake Relief in Turkey
A $5,000 Oblation grant will aid survivors following two deadly earthquakes in Turkey. This grant will support relief efforts through Red Crescent, which is conducting rescue and relief work in the eastern region of the country hit by the 7.2- then 5.6-magnitude quakes. Vancouver children raise funds for World Accord

When the Vancouver kids found out how the population versus food is distributed in our world, they decided to create and sell shadow boxes and donate the money to World Accord. They were responsible for $150 going to World Accord!

Movember in Edmonton

Several men of the Edmonton congregation decided to participate in "Movember" and let the hair on their upper lips grow for a month in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. This picture shows the men in their "after" shot at the congregational pot luck to celebrate their efforts on Sunday, Movember 27. George Allen, Team Captain, reported that the group raised approximately $3,000 in pledges, both on-line and in person! This far exceeded the goal he had established on the Canadian Cancer website of $200. Additional pledges are certainly still welcome. Go to Movember in Edmonton and click on "Support Team Community of Christ" to push our totals even higher! Thanks to the men (and their wives!) for putting up with the extra growth for a month. And thanks to everyone who pledged support for their efforts.

As you’re all aware, we’ve been prepping the dining hall for the installation of our new floors. We’re almost there, but we're up against a tight December 5th deadline to meet the schedule with our contractors.

On December 3rd we will hold a group work party with lunch provided.

Please let us know if you can drop in or plan to be with us for the work party on Dec 3rd. Thanks for all you do to make Samish such a wonderful place for all!
