Kidd Rasta & The Peacemakers

Ten years and four albums later, Kidd Rasta and the Peacemakers are still on the scene creating more music than ever. It is in the ethnically diverse streets of Toronto, Canada where the band meets to create their unique sound. Being of Rasta faith, Kidd writes music to a reggae vibe but with a twist. "It’s People Music". Achieving radio play, television spotlights, and creating live shows, which can even get grandma up and dancing, has opened many doors for the band. This includes opening for acts ranging from reggae's Luciano to rock and roll's Lenny Kravitz. Kidd Rasta and the Peacemakers are currently working on the soundtracks for new Paul Perrier documentaries "Cracked Not Broken" and "Looking For Rasta", releasing their new music videos for "Rwanda" and "4/20 Ganja Song", and in the studio recording the bands fifth full length album. Kidd is also excited about his first solo project produced by Vincent Grant of the renowned Tuff Gong Studios in Jamaica. The album’s first single entitled "Hear H.I.M. Call" was released in early 2009. Kidd Rasta and the Peacemakers' music and positive message continues to reach more people as their popularity grows.

Micah Barnes began performing in the cafes and coffeehouses of Toronto while still a teenager in high school. A dazzling performer, Jackie Richardson possesses a powerful and supple voice that is a perfect match for her vibrant stage presence. The awards and nominations for Jackie’s four-decade-long body of work include JUNOs, Geminis, Jessie and Bessie’s, Maple Blues and a Canadian Black Achievement Award for the Arts. In celebration of Black History Month, the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers are pleased to host a reception on February 7, featuring acclaimed Canadian author Lawrence Hill.

Hill’s work is known for touching on issues of identity and belonging. In 2008, he won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book for The Book of Negroes which was a
number one bestseller in Canada. Some of his other works include Any Known Blood, Black Berry, Sweet Juice: On Being Black and White in Canada and Some Great Thing.

“A New Hope” is a one-woman play based on the historical accounts of John Clarkson’s 1791 mission to America to improve the conditions of the Black Loyalists in Nova Scotia and to promote the colonization of Sierra Leone in Africa. The storyteller, through the voices of those who made the journey to Nova Scotia, tells of their hardships and hopes for a better life in this new land. Many found hope in the promises of John Clarkson, with the departure for some to Sierra Leone, Africa in 1792. The year 2008 marked the 225th anniversary of the Black Loyalists’ arrival in Nova Scotia and their creation of the first large free Black Community living in the world outside of Africa. “A New Hope” is a play created in honour of this celebration.

Shelley is doing her performances this February at Network Orange Cafe to support the Stephen Lewis Foundation Arts Fund Program, and its innovative use of the arts by African grassroots organizations that bring healing and hope to communities on the frontlines of the AIDS pandemic.

RasTa at the ROM, a new initiative to celebrate Black History Month, was created by In Search of Rastafari Inc. and SNR Agency in partnership with the ROM.

The HD feature length documentary, RasTa: A Soul’s Journey, tells the story of the epic journey of Rita and Bob Marley’s granddaughter, Donisha Prendergast, as she travels to eight countries around the world to explore the roots and evolution of the Rastafarian movement and the many cultures it has influenced. The film follows her travels to Ethiopia, England, Israel, South Africa, Canada, United States, India and Jamaica, while documenting Prendergast's personal transformation and understanding of Rastafari. The film includes interviews with Rita Marley, Damian Marley, UK entrepreneur Ras Levi Roots and poet Benjamin Zephaniah.

RasTa: A Soul’s Journey is executive produced/produced by Patricia Scarlett, produced by Marilyn Gray and directed and written by award-winning filmmaker Stuart Samuels.Following a private world premiere screening on February 1st, RasTa: A Soul’s Journey will be shown at eight free public screenings in the Signy and Cléophée Eaton Theatre at 2:30 pm every Saturday and Sunday throughout the month of February and is free with general Museum admission.
