There couldn't have possibly been a better director-music director combo to wish him on the occasion of his debut film album launch.

Singer Karthik, who turned music composer with director Vasanthabalan's Aravan, had the blessings of Mani Ratnam and A R Rahman, who appreciated his hardwork and wished him all success.

After listening to a couple of songs, the Oscar winner said, "I really like the kind of sounds he's used in the Oorae... number. That kind of song is difficult to compose and if done badly, it might bore the audience. But Karthik has done a good job. If the trailer is anything to go by, the film will surely rock!"

Man of the moment, Karthik said, "I don't know why Vasanthabalan sir chose me to do this film, but I've given my best. Few years ago, it was a dream for me to even meet Rahman sir. And now, it's an honour that he's launching my album."

Karthik's interview on Aravaan.

2011-10-08T14:30:00.000+05:30

Karthik is surely excited to be a part of a period film by Vasantha Balan. The man has left many crazy with his singing and now he will unleash his composition skills with Aravaan featuring Aadhi, Pasupathi, Dhansikaa and Archana Kavi in pivotal roles. We surprised the singer turned composer inviting him for a brief chat on his latest venture, he was more than happy too share his experience on the same.

Hi Karthik, we just overheard you humming the title track of Aravaan, isn’t it?

Haha, no not yet it is a secret.

So, tell us something about your latest project.

Aravaan has seven songs. Most of the songs have been penned by Na Muthukumar and Viveka.

Alright, tell us did you think you will turn a composer soon, sometime back in an interview you mentioned how tough composing music was, and look here you are composing for Aravaan?

It surely is a different ball game. Frankly speaking I love to take up challenges and the theme by itself was a challenge for me that has driven me to a new experience. Moreover all credits go to Vasantha Balan sir, he has been so understanding and has given me the space and time to experiment.

Wow, you are really lucky to have great support in such a director, it goes to show how much he trusts your work, thumbs up for that.

Yeah, thumbs up.

So were there any strict procedures?

As I mentioned I got my own space but the songs were written first the tunes were set accordingly.

Anything special that you have tried to bring across through your songs?

Well most of the research during composing was aimed at bringing out the flavor of the period film, I was insistent in adding a lot of folk elements.

Sounds good so how long did it take to finish?

As you know, it is difficult to be create a song on a timely basis, I took 15 to 20 days to compose the first song – Orae Orae, check it out.

Definitely, on more thing that has come across amidst the circle of appreciation is, you used 95 per cent live orchestra. Would you comment on the same?

Well I have used instruments like Fujara and some pipes from Pakistan. Moreover I had to collaborate with musicians from other parts of the world which made it essential to have a live setup. Pete Lockett, a percussionist from the UK was also a part of the same. I have taken care that I gave preference to our traditional instruments like the sitar, sarangi, veena and nadhaswaram and there has been a minimal use of western instruments like bass guitar and keyboard.

That sounds tasty!

Haha, I really like the way you said that.

Thank you, so Karthik everyone knows you are a fan of AR Rahman and Ilaiyaraja? Will there be shades of their music too?

My compositions will be a tribute to my gurus. I’m a Chennai boy and have grown up listening to their tunes all the time. I don’t want to imitate anyone.

Thank you Karthik for a great time, we are sure you will have a great starting as a composer, our best wishes will always be with you. May the light of Indian music spread.

★ On The Stage With Harris Jayaraj ★

2011-09-20T20:41:00.000+05:30

It's been 10 years since Harris Jayaraj's music entered our lives, with the superhit “Minnale”. Hundreds of melodies and hit numbers later, the composer finally embarks on a world tour to meet his fans spread across the world.

‘Harris On The Edge' will touch hearts from Chennai (October 2) to South Africa, stopping in between in Coimbatore (October 16), Hyderabad (October 22), Dubai (November 18) and Kuala Lumpur (December 3).

The show is organised by Chennai-based Techfront and is directed by A.L. Vijay, who is fresh from the success of “Deiva Thirumagal”. It promises to be a high-octane entertainer, with a 270-degree stage allowing for better audience experience.

“The stage will be huge — 140 ft by 90 ft — and we want the audience (about 25,000 people) to see the concert, not merely hear it. The setting will ensure they will connect beautifully with what's happening on stage,” says M.S. Muralidharan, managing director, Techfront. There will be an element of 3D too.

Top singers including Haricharan, Karthik, Kay Kay, Alaap Raju, Naresh Iyer, Andrea, Harini, Tippu, Chinmayi, Benny Dayal and Swetha Mohan will bring the stage alive.

Dancers, from South India, North India and some from abroad, will perform too. A 24-member orchestra will accompany them.

The tickets will also have a 3D element to them, so that the audience can carry a part of the magic back with them.

Such a long journey:

“I've been wanting to do a live show since 2006,” says Harris Jayaraj. “But, I was scared! Working in a studio and performing in a live show are a different ball game. I needed time to prepare myself, rehearse and ensure that I give the audience an experience beyond the music and keep their interest alive,” he says.

Now, the composer is all excited. “I hope this will be an unforgettable part of my career. It's a wonderful opportunity to meet all my fans,” he says.

Harris has chosen singers who know Tamizh. “I don't want any mispronounced words on stage,” says Harris, who's compositions allow words their rightful space. “Before I started composing, I never thought beyond basic communication in Tamil. Then, I realised how much work the lyricists put in, and the beauty of the language. I wanted to ensure the lyrics did not get drowned out. Luckily, the audience supported this,” smiles Harris.

Also, during the concert, around 30 per cent of the songs will be presented differently. “It will be a purely organic performance.”

DIFFERENT VOICES:

The composer is also known for his ability to showcase voices differently. Think, for instance, Bombay Jayashri (Vaseegara, Suttum Vizhi…) and Sudha Ragunathan (Anul Mele Panithuli). “Jayashri is wonderful in the low ranges. I call her the female Yesudas. As for Sudha, I love her dedication. She's so famous, yet she practised this song for two days to get it right!” he says.

Does all this fame and success scare Harris? “I don't look back. I'm scared to. I keep my eyes trained only on my work.”

The concert is also dedicated to his dear friend, director Jeeva, who's life was cut short during the shooting of “Dhaam Dhoom”. “Anbe En Anbe will be a part of the show. It will be my tribute to him,” Harris says with a sad smile.

DIRECTOR-SPEAK

I'm honoured and excited to be a part of this show. I love Harris Jayaraj's music and have always wanted to work with him. The USP of the show will be his music. It will feature the best of his numbers.

All I bring in is creative inputs to ensure that the event takes place seamlessly. We want to give the audience the feel of watching a movie. It will be a power-packed show that will hold their attention for a full two-and-a-half hours.

A.L. VIJAY

The show: October 16, Hindustan College of Arts and Science, 7.15 p.m. to 9.45 p.m.

Tickets: Tickets for the show, priced at Rs. 500 (for students), Rs. 1,000, Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 5,000, will be available online at www.followon.co.in or www.bookmyshow.com. The 3D tickets will be sold at retail outlets from September 23. They will be available at Lifestyle, Pantaloons (Brookefields Mall) and Big Bazaar. For bulk booking, call 95000-67000 or 95004-00744

A part of the proceeds will go to two NGOs — Coimbatore-based Siruthuli, which works in the field of water management; and Chennai-based Ekam Foundation, which provides health care for children, and works across Tamil Nadu.

From `Raavanan' to `Aravaan'

2011-07-03T15:10:00.000+05:30

Posted by Karthik on July 3, 2011 at 12:30pm

It was great to receive the Filmfare award for best playback singer (male) in Tamil for `Usure Poguthey' in `Raavanan', yesterday in Hyderabad. I remember I had recorded the Hindi version (`Behne de') first and it was only six months later that I sang `Usure Poguthey’.

`Behne de' written by Gulzar saab, was mellow, had pretty lyrics and suggested that I surrender to you. But the Tamil lyrics by Vairamuthu gave a totally different dimension to the same song and music. It was very much in the face, with grit and aggression.

The initial reactions to `Usure Poguthey' were very good even when just the audio was out. A lady cried on the phone, saying it touched her soul and that she could not handle the song. Another friend said he was very happy for me that I had got to sing this number. At home, Ambika, my wife liked `Behne de’ while my parents preferred `Usure poguthey’.

I still remember how Mani Sir explained to me the situation, about Raavan’s character, after which I had to basically get the emotions right. Rahman told me to keep the intro soft and slowly build up the tempo. Gulzar saab liked my rendition which was a huge compliment.

Looking to the future, all the six songs of `Aravaan', my first project as a music composer are ready. Since the film will release sometime in the first week of September, I expect the music to hit the stores sometime mid-August. Though it wasn't planned that I would, I have chipped in a bit as a playback singer, almost like an emergency quota because we could not find someone !

`Aravaan' is a period film by Vasanthabalan and I am curious to know how people receive the album. I am not signing any more films as composer till I know the reactions to `Aravaan'.

The process of composing over the past one year has been very enjoyable and that is a very honest statement. I have been singing for the last ten years and I now realise composing is much more challenging.
