Victory for GB&I in Walker Cup

WALKER CUP RESULT: G B AND I 14pt, UNITED STATES 12pt

Great Britain and Ireland have won the Walker Cup biennial match for the first time since the Ganton match in 2003.

The final scoreline at Royal Aberdeen's Balgownie links was:

So, in the end, home skipper Nigel Edwards' team needed the big lead they had built up over the first three sessions of play to lead by 5pt going into the final session of 10 singles.

The Americans narrowed the gap to 2pt in the end by taking the singles honours today 6 1/2pt to 3 1/2pt.

GB and I's only winners in the afternoon were Michael Stewart and Rhys Pugh. There were halved matches for Jack Senior, Steve Brown and Paul Cutler.

But all credit to the home squad. The American team was loaded with players rated far higher in the World Amateur Golf Rankings than their GB and I counterparts.

But our men played better in the wind that swept the links for the best part of the two days.

The links of Royal Aberdeen GC were presented in fanatstic condition and the BBC coverage of the match and the golf course was to their usual high standard.

I really have to fill this gap in the links courses I have played in Scotland and get myself over to Royal Aberdeen.

A wee footnote: two St. Andrews Links Caddies were working for the GB&I Team and credit goes to Eck & Jordan for the work they put into the match. Jordan's golfer, Steven Brown, wins the 1/2 point that secures the Walker Cup when he halved his match with Blayne Barber on the 18th.

A wonderful day of golf on the links of Royal Aberdeen GC with conditions as one would expect during the month of September in Scotland...sunshine, rain, wind then there was sunshine, rain and a wee bit more wind.
A really good start in the morning Foursomes (pairs playing alternate shots) for the GB&I Team with them coming out on top by 3-1.
The x8 afternoon singles went through all the emotions that golfer v golfer can bring with the USA Team winning the first x3 matches, thus putting a lot of pressure on GB&I in the remaining games and they responded well to that initial burst from the USA by winning four of the remaining five matches. The end result of the first day here at Royal Aberdeen GC is 7 - 4 in favour of GB&I.

I, along with x11 of my fellow St. Andrews Caddies, was given the opportunity to guide the 2011 American Walker Cup Team around the Old Course here at the Home of Golf last Saturday.

At this point the legendary St. Andrean golfer Bob Thomson joined us, second from the left in the photo above, to check out the American Team as they played over the last five holes on the Old Course. Bob achieved his staus by winning the St. Andrews GC Championship five times over five decades. The first in 1969 & last in 2002.

The prestigious amateur Walker Cup golf match between the United States (USA) versus Britain & Ireland (GB&I) takes place next weekend, 10th & 11th September.This biennial golf contest consists of 18 singles matches and eight foursomes matches over the competition’s two days. The USA Team has won the last three matches and leads the series overall, 34-7-1.

This is the pinnicle of the amateur golfers career and many have subsequently gone onto wonderful professional golf life, most notably in recent years: Rory McIroy, Paul Casey, Luke Donald, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson and many others...

The match is being played at the superb links of Royal Aberdeen, founded in 1780 and recorded as the 6th oldest golf club in the world. It is regarded as one of Scotland's finest links most notably by the golf chronicler Bernard Darwin who thought it "..a noble links". It recently hosted the British Seniors Open in 2005 which was won by the ageless Tom Watson.

The American team arrive in Great Britain this weekend and there is the possibility that they may drop into St. Andrews on route to Aberdeen which is situated a couple of hours north, for a wee knock around the Old Course. It could/should be an interesting couple of weekends.

Golf: A Small World

One can be assured, at least once a week, as I caddie over the legendary links of St. Andrews that the subject 'golf's small world' will pop up. This was highlighted on last Wednesday when my caddie buddie Scotty & I were asked to go straight down to the New Course from the 18th green of the Old Course, and catch up with a x4ball that had teed off and would probably be on the 2nd green by the time we got there. So it proved.

After introductions and a few holes under or belt we were standing upon the green of the wonderful par4 6th when Scotty mentioned that walking down the 4th fairway was Hank, my R&A member from San Francisco, who had waved across in recognition. Good to see his familiar gait upon the links again, out for a bounce game and a couple of weeks practice before the R&A Autumn Medal. One of the golfers we were looking after, Bart, asked who it was as he dissapeared from view and on our reply he gasped: "I do not believe it! I've known Hank for 25 years! Will we see him again during our round?" Bart decided to wait behind after finishing on the 18th and caught up with Hank over a couple of whiskies.

We continued caddying for the San Francisco boys over their following rounds upon the Old Course, having proved just how 'small the golfing world' is...in St. Andrews.

Oystercatchers Golf Society at the Dukes, St Andrews

The Oystercatcher Golf Society, minus a couple of members, met up for an improptu weekend in St. Andrews and some golf in the area. Arrival was late Friday afternoon and as I had managed to finish my 2nd caddie round at 5.45pm we got to meet at the Strathtyrum Course just after 6.00pm.

Boyne was knackered. Might have been due to a 07.04am tee time on the New Course, following by a second round caddy round over the Old Course finishing about 17.30pm. I thought I was going to meet LB, Alistair & Mary on the Strathtyrum around the 9th hole...but due to some delays on their journey to St Andrews I bounced into them at reception area and found myself playing 18. A grand 54 holes completed...my golf was a wee bit under par but good fun!

A excellent day was had on this great golf course that offers a delightful change from the links golf of St Andrews. Caddie Golf Tours are fortunate to have a good relationship with the Old Course Hotel Golf Resort & Spa that own the Dukes Course and can secure tee times for visiting golfers who wish to play one of Scotland's great golf courses while staying in St Andrews.

The St. Andrews Golf Club had asked as many members as could be available to congrgate today, Sunday 31st July, at 1.00pm on the steps adjacent to the 18th green of the Old Course for an 'official club photograph'. I believe the last one taken was 2000, over 10 years ago. There have been a few new additions to the club since then, I being one of them, and a few stalwart members have sadly passed on.

I had, thankfully, completed my 2nd round of the day at 5.00pm an hour before this deluge swamped the Old Course here in St. Andrews and was making my way back to the car after my post round beer in the Dunvegan Bar. It was raining hard and had been for the last 30 minutes but I certainly did not expect this scene.

I heard one of the guys in the fairway shout to his playing partners: "If you make the green I'll give the putt!" You really cannot script this...no sane person would believe you.

Tony Korogolos and crew arrived on Friday of last week for their stay in the 'Auld Grey Toon' and CaddieGolf Tours managed to get the 4ball on the Old Course, St Andrews, at 16.50pm that very evening. An excellent result.

I caddied for the Golf Guru and assisted his close buddies as best I could, they had been traveling for goodness knows how many hours. Our boy shot a solid round from the White Medal Tees of 81. Could do better and certainly did the following morning as we got the 4ball a 07.10am tee time back on the Old Course. I believe the guys may have had a maximum of 5hours sleep and were running on total excitement about playing the Old, again. Marvelous stuff.

Caddies were taken for the group which took a major burden of my shoulders allowing me to concentrate on the kid, Tony K. We managed a 77, again from our White Medal tees here on the Old. An excellent round with just a couple of wee blips that I shall not dwell upon. Better to concentrate on the finish through the 17th and 18th holes. Tony wanted to hit a little bit more aggresive with the drive on the famous 17th Road compared to the previous evening and got punished with an Out of Bounds..oops! So we re-tee and the Guru splits the fairway and has 176 front green, pin on 20 yards. Lying 3 of the tee we are beginning to think 'damage limitation' and play for a double bogey. We strike hs favourite Bobby Jones 21' low and hard, direct at the flag but due to the late morning sunshine and glare we are unsure if it has held the green, as we approach, believing it may have gone through and onto the 'road', Tony spots something white and round, stuck in the cup hard against the flag! Holed out for a Par4!!!

We proceed to sink a wonderful birdie putt on the 18th and shoot a good solid 77 from our Medal competition tees. Tony was a delight to Caddie for and the hole out from the 17th fairway will quickly become one of my top tales about the 17th Road hole. Wonderful.

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE R AND A
Prize money will be increased for the 2011 Open Championship, The R&A today announced. In 2011, the prize fund will rise to £5 million, with the Champion receiving £900,000.
The Open Champion’s purse has been increased by over 5%, from last year’s figure of £850,000. The total prize fund remained at £4.2 million for 2007, 2008 and 2009, before being increased to £4.8 million for the 150^th Anniversary Open, last year.
"Each year The R&A strives to ensure that The Open provides the very best in all areas of the event,” said The R&A’s Chief Executive, Peter Dawson. “From spectator and media facilities, to player experience and performance reward, every aspect of The Open is under regular review to ensure it remains at the forefront of championship golf."
There is less than one week remaining in which to purchase Open Championship tickets at advance-purchase prices. Until the end of June, daily tickets for the 2011 Championship at Royal St George’s are available for £55, while season tickets, permitting entry on all eight days, cost £220.
For just £110, a family of five can enjoy a day at golf’s oldest Major, by taking advantage of The R&A’s established ticketing policy, which grants free access to any juvenile, aged 16 or under, who is accompanied by a paying adult. Those travelling from the capital on Championship days can also take advantage of Southeastern’s ‘Kids for a Quid’ promotion, which allows accompanied five to 15-year-olds to travel to the venue for just £1.
With International Marquee tickets sold out for the four Championship days, limited numbers of Wednesday tickets are still available. Hospitality can also still be purchased, with Open Championship Official Hospitality fine-dining packages remaining on sale for Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
Half-price entry to The Senior Open Championship, which is being held the following week at Walton Heath Golf Club, Surrey, will be granted on production of a valid Open Championship admission ticket.

Fantastic image of a rather angry sky that was developing as we were on the 7th tee, High Out. There had been a few rumblings of thunder over towards Dundee and at least x4 fork lightning strikes as we putted out on the 5th green and played down from the 6th tee...

Golfers & caddies were beginning to get a little concerned but thankfully the storm flew past us though it was a little scary for 20 minutes.

Day2 Links Trophy, St Andrews

A postponed post from the St. Andrews Links Trophy held a couple of weeks ago. I went over to visit family in rural France immediately after tournament and did not have access to publish the update.

A later tee time for our second round, 14.30pm on the Old Course, and we are looking for a solid performance to make the cut of Top 40 & ties. The final two rounds are played over the Old on Sunday. The temperature has dropped 12' degrees from yesterday's scorcher and an extra couple of layers are required to resist this cold easterly wind of 12-15mph.

After scoring a good par round of 71 on the New Course yesterday we continued along OK over the first eight having a few, good, opportunities for birdie but never capitalising on them and then a strong birdie putt from 15 feet on the ninth bounced out of the cup to 2 feet and the subsequent par putt got a bad 'kick' and spun out...resulting in a bogey from nowhere and a front nine of 37. It all went according to plan at the beginning of the back nine, albeit the birdies did not appear at 10,11,12 or 13th and the putts were from no further away than 18 feet, until the par5, Long, 14th. On the green in regulation 3 shots and perhaps 10 feet we managed to commit cardinal sin of three putting and walk off with a bogey 6. On the par4, 16th we drive into the Principle Nose bunker and a double bogey brings our round to a lovely +4! A good par on the 17th & another par4 on 18th does little to lift the sense of doom I have that we will be on the wrong side of the 'cut'.

The line is drawn, for the 40 golfers and ties, 2 hours later at 146, we are 147. Apparently the last golfer, with the last putt, on the 18th of the Old Course birdies the hole and roughly x10 golfers on 147 mark are eliminated from Sunday's two rounds over the Old Course. Ah well...not to be this year, we did have our chances but just could not get the birdies required to qualify for the last day of the tournament. I am sure many others have equally painful stories to tell.

St. Andrews Links Trophy

The 2011 St. Andrews Links Trophy began today over the New Course. The second qualifying round will be played over the Old Course tomorrow, Saturday, when the top 40 golfers and ties will progress to playing two rounds on the Old Course on Sunday.

My golfer, for the third year of this event, is James Frazer from Penard in Wales. James played a steady round of golf going out x35 and in with a x36, shooting a par71 round which places him, with quite a large bunch, at equal 10th. The best score was a x66 from one of his friends from Wales Rhys Enoch.

It was a blisteringly hot day here in St. Andrews, brilliant sunshine and a gorgeous blue sky that acted as great back drop to watch these young amateurs blasting the wee white ball from the tee.

We have an afternoon tee time, 14.30pm, and the weather is to be a bit overcast and possibly up to 12 degrees cooler which could be a blessing after todays heat. The wind is to change direction, coming from the east and slightly stronger than todays westerly. A good round required tomorrow to get us into the top x40 players and the final two rounds on Sunday.

It is now a two weeks since the Barnard (x18) and Van Tonder (x4) golf tours and I believe, from the feedback so far from both, that Caddie Golf Tours had a success. The good weather in early May helped and the golfers seemed to get right into the enjoyment of being in Scotland, golfing on classic links courses, relaxing in a few bars and chewing the fat with their friends. The sunshine on a Scottish links certainly helps!

It has been good to get a break from the intensity of those golf tours, and they were intense. One of the benefits is caddying across the links of the Old Course, where I can immerse myself in the history and enjoyment of guiding the 'virgin' golfers from across the world as they tackle the Old Course. Always good fun.

Easter in St. Andrews

We have came over to the Kingdom of Fife for what will be close to two weeks, staying in our wee bolt hole 'Hamilton House' situated four miles outside St. Andrews. Golf was going to be played this afternoon on the Strathtyrum Links, the smaller of the six 18 hole golf courses that make up the St. Andrews Links, but a heavy downpour has scuppered that thought!

Some work on understanding the laptop, wifi connections, fine tuning Caddie Golf Tours forthcoming tours and preparations for the planned barbeque tomorrow afternoon may be better use of a wet Saturday afternoon.

If truth be known the lovely LB has done all of the barbeque prep! Potato salad, marinaded chicken and gutted sardines have been accomplished while I sit building up an appetite!

Out to St. Andrews this evening for a couple of beers and dinner at Pizza Express. Hopefully we shall have some golf first thing in the morning to continue our marathon golf contest, lasting throughout the year, that currently stands 'All Square' after six matches. LB has had her handicap cut by her golf club, Clober, and now plays off 33, which may just give me a slight edge though she is claiming 22 shots from me. This is better than the 25 I was giving away a couple of weeks ago when I was soundly annihilated 8&7.

I have been informed that I will be able to pick up my 'Yearly Ticket' for golf on all the St. Andrews links courses tomorrow. I have been patiently waiting for this opportunity since 2005...so frustrating caddying upon the Old/New/Jubilee/Eden/Castle golf courses over the season knowing that you will only ever be able to play them once, if at all during that year.

My golfing buddy from Phillidelphia, Alan, posted this little vid on You Tube the other day. From the top of the rise above the 5th green & 6th tee on the Old Course he films the panorama of the Old Course, New Course , Eden estuary, St. Andrews town and yours truly popping up at the end...I can never resist a camera!.

This was taken during 2009 and Alan will return in July this year bringing along the Guru Tony (as mentioned in the vid), Shane and Todd . Yet more new blood for the Old Course!

A grand weekend of classic Scottish links golf, windy, sunny and a wee bit of drizzle, was played over three superb courses that none of the Oystercatcher Golf Society had visited before, Kilmarnock Barassie, Prestwick St. Nicholas and Dundonald Links all based on the West Coast of Scotland.

The Oystercatcher Golf Society are preparing for their inaugural Spring golf weekend down the west coast of Scotland, playing three wonderful links courses.

At present the Oystercatcher Golf Society is made up of three golfing couples and two of them will be able to sneak a wee warm up round on the links of Kilmarnock Barassie, used as an Open qualifier when it is played at Royal Troon and Turnberry, ahead of the real competition rounds over Prestwick St. Nicholas on Saturday and the Dundonald Links on Sunday morning.

The 'Oystercatcher Trophy' will be played over two rounds, Saturday and Sunday, with an accumulated stableford score over both days from both partners. No pressure on the husband / wife combination there then! A best individual score, nearest the pin and longest drive will be in operation as well.

We are booked into the Barcelo Marine Hotel, care of Caddie Golf Tours, for two nights bed & breakfast and are looking forward to relaxing in the Spa facilities before / after our rounds of golf.

Caddies V St. Andrews Links Trust

The 2010 annual Dod Stewart Memorial Trophy will be played between the Caddies and the Links Trust on Monday 28th February 2011. This is the rearranged match from last November which was cancelled due to the severe weather.

It means that Boyne has, fortunately, got the call to participate as a clash of dates last November meant he had to pull out for the first time since he began caddying at St. Andrews in 2002.

I shall be partnering my old golfing companion the impressive Mr. A. Howie and our tee time is 09.12am on the Eden Course. The competition is Fourball Match Play with a total of six matches.
