A native application that writes directly to S3 would be ideal.

I notice that for my pet projects, I always write 2 or 3 features at a time. Then I go back and tear apart an old feature, and rewrite it with the best practices I learn recently.
My dad has been an Windows IT guy for the past decade. He has always hated the certifications and saw them only as a necessary evil for his career. Besides the amount of personal time he'd have to devote, the costs of the certifications were also an issue. Most of the time, his company would pay for the certifications, but if there was a cert that he wanted for himself, then he would pay it out of his own pocket. When he was trying to persuade me to stay out of the tech industry, he cited the frequent and never-ending certification processes as one his reasons.

I also strongly agree with the points you made about professionalism. Even thought I had known that companies searched for background information on their prospective hires, I was still pleasantly surprised to go to interviews and be questioned about my blog posts and public projects. It lets the interviewer know more about me, and it helps direct the conversation.
