This is getting a little better. I have been in Cagayan de Oro City for over a year and I must say that a lot has changed since the first time I came back here. No, Cagayan de Oro City still has the pesky Badjaos who pester you with open palms as if all you do in this world is give them money. I had a bit of fun doing the SAMMAKA website and quite a few members have made it a stop. The city fiesta was just celebrated and Xavier University, Ateneo de Cagayan Alumni Association (XU-AAA) also had their annual homecoming although I did not have the chance to attend. The new Miss Cagayan de Oro City was also crowned. Miss CDO is a pretty lass and should have a blast promoting Cagayan de Oro.

It seems to me that the time I spent here in CDO just went like a breeze. I no longer visit my lakatan bananas which have begun to bear fruit. It was a very fruitful year trying to make a go of farming in Cagayan de Oro. Did I learn about natural farming? You bet I did and the knowledge I gained from my little stint as farm manager has done wonders in making me realize the fragility of the earth's biosphere. Corporate farming has really harmed the environment and nothing is being done about it.

I have just been to Dumaguete for a week and I had thought that I would have the occasion to drop by Cebu. As it turned out, there was very little time to do that so I just took the ferry directly to Cagayan de Oro. I had the chance to be with my family whom I have not seen in over five months. It is a sad thing to be away from the family for so long. But, it cannot be helped. I have no work in Dumaguete and I am forced to seek work where I can.

I had brought some lactobacillus for the family to use. I brought two bottles of mango concentrate to be used for flavoring. There is very little chance for this to be adopted by people. I do not have any marketing plan that will popularize this wonderful invention. Lactobacillus kills the bad microorganisms that cause digestion problems, among other things.

I also had the chance to try out my vinegar formula. It seems to me that it is very effective against respiratory infections. It could even be a cure for asthma. I should explore this some more because it seems so promising.

Planting Lakatan bananas in Cagayan de Oro City is something that I never dreamed I would be doing. Well, not really in Cagayan de Oro City itself but close enough, in Maasin, Baungon which belongs to Bukidnon province. Maasin is close enough to Cagayan de Oro City that it might as well be a part of this golden city itself. The way to Maasin is through the highway past the Lumbia Airport on the way to Talakag where you take a left turn going towards Cabula Bridge. Crossing the bridge brings you to Bukidnon territory.

Maasin is blessed with tall mountains which allows a lot of water to flow towards the lowlands and on to the Cagayan River itself. My brother has a piece of land there which where I am planting the Lakatan seedlings. From where I live it takes me thirty minutes to get to the farm which is pretty close to the city and I go there everyday. I had no idea how bananas where cultivated but there is no dearth of experts when it comes to bananas in Cagayan de Oro City. Del Monte grows bananas and so does Dole which has extensive tracts of land dedicated to bananas.

One can either get seedlings from tissue culture laboratories or you can get suckers from existing plants. While suckers are cheaper, tissue culture seedlings might be more robust and healthy, assuming of course that the laboratory takes its source for explants from healthy, virus-free plants.

What is going on with the Philippines? I go to the Cogon Market in Cagayan de Oro City and I see Filipinos herded inside a rope enclosure docile as lambs waiting to buy NFA rice. Are Filipinos no better than animals? The brilliant Arroyo administration which has claimed success for the exchange rate of the peso against the dollar is finally laying siege on the dignity of the Filipino. Does no one see the irony? People are now buying pilit or malagkit, gelatinous rice used for puto maya and suman and mixing this with rice because it is cheaper. Rice at 54 pesos!!

Cagayan de Oro City Revisited

I have seen that there has been some changes in the way NFA rice is being distributed. No longer do I see any rope enclosures in Cogon Market in Cagayan de Oro City. Thank God somebody has found a better way of distributing rice. It pains me to see Filipinos reduced to such a condition as being roped off as though animals waiting in a paddock or corral. Cagayan de Oro City is very close to my heart and I had all praises for the way traffic has been decongested by opening new bridges that link Nazareth to Carmen and another one that brings Taguanao closer to Lumbia. I think with this new development, I will go back to praising the City Government of Cagayan de Oro for what it is doing for the people of the city.

I have been in Cagayan de Oro City for over a week and I have set up my computer here with an internet connection which should make it supremely easy for me to do things online. I would like to post some pictures here and I will do so as soon as I get some fresh ones taken. The old cogon market has become a revelation of sorts. Gone are the days when the last thing you would want to go in Cagayan de Oro City was the Cogon Market. Not only was the traffic terrible or worse than terrible but the smell was over powering. There seemed to be garbage everywhere and the stalls are all over the place, they are not really stalls but pails with fish where people should be.

All of that has gone and I must say that this is one thing which the government is doing quite nicely.

I have had my fill of sites that promises easy money for doing things. So, I did some of those and never felt that I was doing something which I could be doing for a long time. I mean sure, you could make money but is it something that you want to do the rest of your life? Click on rotating sites? Click on some ads? I did have my doubts about that paid to click thing. It could be click fraud but I never bothered to find out. The bottom line is there are so many of these sites and I am quite frankly quite sick of it. I am not saying that these sites are not legit or are not going to pay out. I just never stayed long enough to find out. Mylot.com is something else. I don't care for the money part which they seem to give just for participating in the discussions. That portion I find refreshing, participating in discussions, I mean. The money part is gravy, if it does get paid out.

Mylot is one way of making money while having fun posting on things you care about.

So now we are on page four. That is an improvement on page 5 where we last found ourselves. There is nothing important about this except to show our face on the top pages. Cagayan de Oro is not really going to miss having us on the top pages of the serps still, it is kind of gratifying to improve on our rankings on the serps.

It has been a while since I visited Cagayan de Oro and there are lots of unfinished things that need to be tied up and removed from my todo list. It may be some kind of omen or sign not to be able to sign in to update this blog and maybe it is saying that I should pay a little more attention to this considering that it has risen somewhat from where it used the which was nowhere.

What now? I do not know how to proceed. There is a roadblock in front of me which I seem unable to deal with. This business with Cagayan de Oro is proving to be a tough nut to crack. Sure, it looked like a walk in the park, a real smooth ride but, after encountering bump after hump I am inclined to think that things will get worse before it gets any better. I cannot go to Cagayan de Oro at this time although the kids will be going there for their grandmother's birthday. It is such a mess, my life is. If I go to Cagayan de Oro I would not be sure of anything good coming out of it so I guess I will just sit and wait.

It always feels good to see old friends in Cagayan de Oro even though I know that I am taking away time from their family and from work. Jessie is always there where he is, tending to his store and always willing to share a smoke and a story. Cagayan de Oro has all of my old friends in her embrace and it is comforting to know that they will be there when I come to visit them. Cagayan de Oro is kind of my home even if I no longer have a place to lay my head there except for a rented room which is hot and uncomfortable in the afternoon but is right smack in the middle of the city which makes it really convenient. Roy is always busy and unavailable and in the few times that I had been in Cagayan de Oro he was always difficult to find.

I tried hard to push this on the search pages and I could not manage that at all. Somehow I wanted to find this on the pages of the search engines. Then light bulb flashed inside my head, I could stop pushing this blog and begin pushing Ching's World for the same keywords. Cagayan de Oro is really the main subject of this website and so a campaign was born. It is quite exciting and I monitor the movement of the website in the search pages everyday which could be quite tedious except for the fact that I .started finding the website listed on the pages of the search engines results. Cagayan de Oro, City of Golden Friendship, City of White-water rafting. I keep coming back to you, Cagayan de Oro. There is Cebu and it is always full of life. Dumaguete is sleepy and keeps to herself mostly. There is Bohol and Siquijor close by but somehow, it is Cagayan de Oro that keeps beckoning for one more visit. Cagayan de Oro as many people know, is a haven for treasure hunters. Many people from other countries like the United States and Japan come to Cagayan de Oro in search of treasures buried by the retreating Japanese Imperial Army. There are also stories of caches left behind by American forces that were intended to be used as currency by the newly-liberated Philippine Government.

Most of these items are not really buried in Cagayan de Oro City although, I would not be surprised if there are a number of sites which might even be in the center of Cagayan de Oro itself. The stories are that these items are located in various areas in Bukidnon, Lanao, Davao, Agusan which can easily be reached from Cagayan de Oro City.

Yamashita was the Japanese general who is credited with bringing these treasures to the country when the Japanese Imperial forces retreated from their strongholds in Southeast Asia. Ching's World is all about the Philippines and its natural treasures of which Cebu City, Dumaguete and Cagayan de Oro City are prime examples.

Cagayan sure has grown. If one is to equate growth with traffic and congested streets then Cagayan de Oro qualifies as having grown trememendously. If one were to gauge growth on the basis of malls that seem to sprout like mushrooms then Cagayan de Oro City would meet the criterion. There is the famous Limketkai mall, Gaisano mall, SM Mall and Robinsons's to name just the major ones. All in Cagayan de Oro City.

Cagayan has sure grown if one is to consider that new bridges are being built to allow the flow of traffic across the Cagayan River. Finally, something is being done about building bridges. Cagayan de Oro has needed bridges for a long time and this is surely now being addressed. Of course one could not fail to mention schools and hotels which are indicators of growth.

Cagayan de Oro City has grown. Ching's World is Cagayan de oro City, and Dumaguete, and Cebu City. Ching's World is the Philippines.

While in Cagayan de Oro City, I had the opportunity to meet with Roy Baltazar at Jessie Barlisan's place. It became an impromptu meeting when Pabs Calo arrived with Mario Reyes. Romy Gabriel also came. We then agreed, after many glasses of Tanduay to come to the XU-AAA Homecoming the following night.

This is what I miss about Cagayan de Oro, when friends who no longer have the luxury of time suddenly find the time to spend with old friends who talk almost exclusively about old times.

Cagayan de Oro, in our younger days was in fact a very quiet town and very few would venture to stay up late since there was not much to do. There was that jukebox at Marla's which constantly belted out "Those were the days my friend.......".

I was in Cagayan de Oro City for the XU-AAA Alumni Homecoming which was about ten days before the city fiesta and already the streets were festooned with buntings and streamers. The air was truly festive even before the fiesta. I would have liked to feature the candidates of the Miss Cagayan de Oro on the pages of Ching's World, the idea being to feature each year's candidates starting 2007.

I had no such luck. Photos were scarce or were proprietary materials. Oh well, I thought it was a good idea, to help promote Cagayan de Oro. I did manage to catch a short preview of the Cascades on their farewell tour at the Barbecue Night of the XU-AAA Homecoming. I saw Jun Tagud and Roland de Lara which was a welcome surprise as I had not seen them in a long time. I miss Cagayan de Oro City. I also miss having Miss Cagayan de Oro on Ching's World.

It is CDO Fiesta once more. Time sure flies. It is almost a year since I visited these pages. One thing is for sure, my memories of Cagayan de Oro City will never fade even when my mind starts to grow dim. These memories will still be there hidden away in the recesses of my mind, comfortable and snug, safe from the changes that go on outside. I am sure I had many reasons for putting down my thoughts about Cagayan de Oro, they don't really matter anymore. Not that they really even mattered before.

Still, in a month's time it will be the City Fiesta and the singular beauty that will be crowned Miss Cagayan de Oro will have her day in the sun. There will be parades and pretty majorettes will strut their baton-twirling wares to the admiring gaze of onlookers which line the streets. Viva Cagayan de Oro! Mabuhay Philippines!!

Bread and circuses. Watching the gaudy lights that deck Divisoria like an over-sized and over-extended Christmas tree, one cannot help but think about ancient Rome and the Roman people's need for entertainment. Divisoria looks like a decked out prostitute offering easy if albeit transitory and shallow pleasures. So, nothing can be done about the traffic problem. No problem, take the people's minds out of that problem and give them lights, big ones and make these lights super-brilliant.

Night Cafe. More bread and circuses. I wonder where everybody goes to urinate seeing as how Divisoria has no restrooms. A keenly-observant Cagayano has pronounced that the Night Cafe which oppresses the commuters every Friday and Saturday has done nothing more than to promote prostitution. This observation is easily borne out by noticing that more and more hookers come out during this time not to mention that they are becoming younger and younger. Does anyone impose the sanction against serving alcohol to minors during Night Cafe?

The Night Cafe is a convenient excuse for minors to go about the city late at night. Do 15-yr-olds drink Tequila? One might find the answer at the Night Cafe. Still, the City government touts the Night Cafe as a big money-maker. Hooray for the City then! Hooray for bread and circuses. Rome did put on vast spectacles, of lions and gladiators who valiantly proclaimed, "We, who are about to die, salute you". All of these for a populace inured to human suffering and blind to everything but their own gratification. So, Caesar gave the people what they wanted until Rome imploded and lost its grandeur.

CDO bursting at the seams.

Cagayan de Oro City has grown by leaps and bounds. This might be a trite characterization of a phenomenon which has crept up on its residence unnoticed but, a casual visitor is sure to observe that Cagayan de Oro City is indeed a city that is bursting at its seams. For one thing, the streets of Cagayan de Oro (CDO) are narrow. These streets served their purpose excellently forty or fifty years ago when the debate was whether to allow motorcycle-diven cabs to take the place of horse-driven tartanillas that had served the riding public ever since before the Second World War.

As history has shown, the motorcabs won and the horse-drawn tartanillas have gone the way of ancient relics; but, these vehicles which were copied from designs that are popular in many parts of the Philippines soon gave way to an invention which has held its own even today: the Motorela. This is a word which combines the words: motorized caretela.This invention is unique to Cagayan de Oro City and as a design I would say it is superior to the other designs which are based on the German motorcycle with a sidecar which we often see in WWII movies.

Going back to the topic of tremendous growth, one only has to take a ride on a jeepney from the downtown area going to Carmen or Patag or SM in order to get the feeling that indeed something is amiss. What I am talking about is bumper-to-bumper traffic almost at all hours of the day, not just during rush hour. The Marcos Bridge which had helped to alleviate the traffic situation several years back is also hard -pressed to ease the traffic congestion. I visited Cagayan de Oro a month ago and I noticed that work was being done to improve or widen or replace the Cagayan de Oro Bridge which for a long time was the only link between the two sections of the city being separated by the Cagayan de Oro River. This is welcome news although I doubt very much that it would do the trick.

What is the cause of this troublesome situation? Fifteen years ago, I was watching three Mayoral candidates, Manny Quisumbing who was running on the platform of opening Lotto outlets in the city, Erasmo Damasing who is a professional politician and Dongkoy Emano, another professional politician who had reached the limit of his term as Governor of Misamis Oriental and was poised to bring his executive skills to serve the citizens of Cagayan de Oro City. In the television debate, all three candidates were asked the question, "In your mind, what is the biggest problem being faced by the City of Cagayan de Oro?" Manny Quisumbing was first to answer and he said that the traffic problem was the biggest of all the other problems facing the city. The two other candidates affirmed that indeed, the traffic problem was the worst of all problems currently beseting the city. This little episode led me to believe that Manny Quisumbing the more intelligent of the three of them. I did not hear however, any words of wisdom regarding the solution of the problem. Just the problem being pointed out, nothing more.

This was almost ten years ago and the problem is still here. What gives?

There is really nothing wrong with that name but somehow it sounds contrived, like something that came out of a contest for naming the city. The thing is Cagayan de Oro is named after something golden as "Oro" is gold in Spanish. There is an obvious reference to gold as evidenced by the name but to make the jump to Golden Friendship seems to me unnatural and well, contrived. At the time when someone had the brilliant idea to dub Cagayan de Oro as "The City of Golden Friendship", there was no gold being mined anywhere near the city. There was an old GI named Barker who lived in a big house along Tomas Saco St. who did some mining but people simply dismissed him as being eccentric or somehow deluded with the fiction of Cagayan de Oro having gold. Little did they know that he really was mining the yellow stuff using techniques known only to American miners.

It may have been a bit embarassing for the leading men of Cagayan de Oro to try to explain away to visitors the reference of gold when no gold could be found in the city except for the gold in rings and watches and the occasional gold tooth of a wealthy Muslim trader. It appears to me that the name was eventually adopted after a radio campaign where the bright idea of locating gold in the hearts of Cagayanos and associating that with being friendly succeeded in cementing the name in the minds of Cagayanos and visitors alike. When the City finally adopted that name, a loyal Chinese businessman promptly adopted the name for his grocery store. I believe the name Golden Friendship is a name which is more fitting for a grocery than a city.

Cebu City and Iloilo City vie for the honor of being The Queen City of the South. Dumaguete has styled herself as The City of Gentle People which aptly describes the demeanor of Dumaguetnons as well as their style of speaking..The need to link the word gold to a name to describe Cagayan de Oro sounds sophomoric and well, contrived. It's a pity gold was not rediscovered until about thirty years later when the gold rush of Gango and environs brought out the adventurers from all over the country. What more can I say? The name "City of Golden Friendship" does not really say anything definitive about the people of Cagayan de Oro.
