Make sure you test your vehicle for antifreeze as if your engine freezes it will split the barrel and head and cause a lot of damage.

Its a very easy but useful test to make sure your spark plug is ok , you may need to clean the electrode to ensure you get a good reading but all you then have to do is set meter to read ohms and measure from the spark plug cap end to the electrode tip , and then from end to body to make sure no leakage to earth.

Get set up turn meter to ohms reading on dial and clean the electrode as below

Test between end of spark plug where HT lead cap fits and the tip of electrode the reading is very low only 1.2 ohms

on a dirty part of electrode the reading goes wild and eventually read 188.9 ohms so very bad and to avoid this clean electrode tip

Next test from spark plug cap end to the body to make sure no earth leakage your meter should read OL which is a good reading as it signals no leakage to earth via the body.

First ill show a quick test on diodes inside you regulator rectifier .

You are just checking current flow through the regulators diodes in forward and reverse bias.

connect + lead of multimeter to further left connector pin

and common lead to 2nd pin from left you should get a voltage reading of around 0.6

here i get 0.52 which is ok

then test 3rd pin from left it should give same reading

now connect common lead of multimeter to left pin and + lead

of meter to the second pin from left you should get OL telling you no

current is flowing as it should be.

Now test with + lead of meter to third pin from left and same OL

no current flow

now connect common lead to the further right hand side

and + lead to second from left you should see 0.6v i get 0.52 which is ok

move red + lead to thurd pin from left and should get 0.6v again i get 0.506 which is ok

Switch + lead to further right pin and touch blue to second and

third pins and you should get 0L no current flowing

I am going to collect info here on Refurbing starter motors for the Cagiva Mito 125

I was hoping to do a full rebuild on this on but all it took was a bit of oil on the bearings and a good clean out and re-lube where needed .

But its quite easy to change the brushes and bearing on these stater motors and can save a lot of money .

Getting in is easy just three PH1 screws

here you see the brushes holder plate i cannot find these to but if anyone know let me

know and ill link to it . i use sizes 5mm wide 8mm high 15mm long

here i am undoing the Brushes spring clip

one you undo the main positive side brushes you can remove plate

here are the positive side brushes the current goes thought the connector on side of

starter then through the field windings and then into the armature via the brushes

then out again via the opposite side brushes

the negative side brushes are on the plate

and although it would be easy to change plate fiding them are hard

i usually ......

Cut the old one off at spade connector then grind connector flat

clean surfaces and re-solder the new brushes to this connector

i did not have to do it this time but i will in the future .

To change the Positive side brushes you will need to remove armature and winding

undo all the securing screws

remove drive gear retaining clip and gear

armature will come out and then you can access the brushes
connector you need to clean and flux and then solder in new brushes
DONT FORGET THE INSULATION

that is all i have now ill update this when i do a full stater motor refurb and solder in new brushes but have a go its quite easy .

I get asked a lot about the differences between the 7 speed and 6 speed bikes .

Usually the 7 speeds are fitted along with better barrels carbs and exhausts so yeah there is a big difference , i have tried and ordinary 6 speed with a 7 speed and yes it was also fun .

When rebuilding a Cagiva Mito 7-speed gearbox, ensure the gear selector drum and the additional 3rd selector fork are perfectly aligned. A "false neutral" or gear hang-up at high RPM can lead to immediate rear-wheel lockup, posing a severe crash risk.

How to ID a 7-Speed from the Outside

You don't need to split the cases to know what you have. Look for these two stamps on the engine casing:

The "5P" Stamp: This is the definitive mark of the 7-speed gearbox.
The Year Code: Codes like BG97 indicate a 1997 Evo 1. These early Evos paired the 7-speed box with the more aggressive "200H" head and "60433" barrel, making them the fastest factory Mitos ever made.

Mechanical Differences: 6-Speed vs. 7-Speed

The 7-speed isn't just "one extra gear." To fit it into the standard engine architecture, Cagiva had to get creative:

Machined Casings: To squeeze the extra gear in, the internal engine cases were specifically machined (shaved) at the factory to provide clearance.
The Selector Fork: A 7-speed uses three selector forks instead of the two found in the 6-speed.
The Drum: The selector drum is unique to the 7-speed; you cannot simply "drop" a 7-speed gear set into a 6-speed engine without the matching drum, forks, and case machining.

2026 Collector Advice

If you are buying a Mito as an investment, the 5P engine is your top priority. While the 6-speed is "fun," the 7-speed provides a tighter powerband that keeps the 2-stroke engine in its "sweet spot" (the power-valve zone) much more effectively during spirited riding.

Im not the sort to obsess about power and gear ratios etc but yes 7 speeds are fun but then again so are 6 speeds .

Here is how you tell if you engine is 6 or 7 speed and the mechanical differences .

As you can see in above picture ( not very clearly ) the engine code stamp 5P this tells me it is the

7 speed engine .

under this stamp is the engine number

Mine begins with BG97 which tells me its a 1997 model so a cagiva mito evo 1 1997 .

That s how you tell year and if its 7 speed from the outside of engine .

Here are the internal differences

The engine cases are the same as in a six speed Cagiva just shave off a bit of metal to be able to squeeze in the extra gear .

The only other differences are in the gearbox itself obviously 7 gears on input - output shafts

Cagiva also added an extra selector fork which is needed to select the gear , i presume the shafts are the same lengths as before to avoids case changes and i also assume the selector drum would be different ill find out when i get a 6 speed in bits to compare .

Recommended batteries for the Cagiva Mito 125 on Ebay UK

First i like to test the battery on the bike .

Test at the battery posts and at the battery Positive and negative wire terminals to ensure you have good voltage at both and to ensure clean terminals .

then test again with engine running .

You should over 12v and them close to 14v at 6000 revs .

Battery , make sure its fully charged remove from bike and recharge

dont just guess and whilst doing this clean up the battery terminals

and the negative and positive wiring terminals.

If you have a voltage meter you can do some basic tests.

When the engine has been off for at least 1-2 hours with ignition key turned off,

100% Charged 12.60 to 12.8v

75% Charged 12.4v

50% Charged 12.1v

25% Charged 11.9v

0% Charged less than 11.8v

I always clean the terminals of a battery on routine Maintenance too , and i always test ground wires for continuity but its best to test earths with a 4 amp test light to ensure adequate current flow .

sorry for photo best i could find but you get the idea test your grounds for minimum 4 amp current flow .

I remove battery and clean the outside , baking power is recommended to neutralise the acid and any spilled acid under the battery to stop corrosion .

Now test battery and top up electrolyte level

remove all the top caps for each cell

and check the level indicator on the front of the battery

all mine were low so had to top them all up .

Use only Deionized water - as the level falls the acid becomes more

powerful so you are adding water to dilute the acid to its correct strength

so do not add acid .

I would now charge the battery to full capacity i am not going to as i dont have time during this

post but will later .

After charging or before you can test each individual cell to see if you have a faulty cell

test between positive and first closest cell

and then between cells

You are looking for around 2v per cell to indicate excellent battery id ignore my results as one its not an excellent battery to i just topped up the water levels and there it was totally

flat but you get the idea .

Last thing to check is a load test connect the battery back into the bike and whist turning the bike over so on heavy electrical load test the voltage at the battery

if you read less than 11v you have duff battery 11v and over indicates a good useable battery .

If in doubt just replace the battery , you can buy them quite cheap

Alternator output tests

Start the engine and run to 6000 revs per minute as this is the speed

at which the alternator starts working .

The attach voltmeter at to volts and test at the battery terminals

reading should be 13,5-15v

if its less than this you have charging circuit problem if more than

this a possible reg/rectifier problem .

Alternator coils testing

Set multimeter to ohms , test measurements between 2 yellow wires

and then yellow wires to earth .

Testing between yellow wires i am getting 0.4 ohms on my bike

running so id say between 0.5 - 0.7 should be ok readings .

Test between Yellow wires to earth or body of stator , to ensure you

have no shorts direct to earth

Pick up coil testing

Pick up coil is important as a rank position sensor spark pv timing .

here is how i test mine and mine was fully working so measurements should be ok

test between red/black wires now

im getting readings of around 100 omhs on a working pick up coil

This is by far the best oil i have used for the Cagiva Mito and was recommended it years ago .

I looked and researched for years and to be honest found not much difference in oils but with this
I actually changed the oil from a gearbox i was struggling ( crunchy and not smooth ) with to this and felt a major improvement so i know its excellent oil .

Just thought id do a post on the fuelling side of Cagiva mito 125

It a pretty simple system using the Carburettor , Reeds .

Fuel System consists of

-Fuel Tank

-Fuel Tank Tap - inc built in Fuel filter

-hoses which sometimes have a fuel filter added

-Carburettor which meters the fuel via specifically sized jets

-Inlet manifold

- Reed valves

Servicing the fuel system - check over .

-Clean out the air filter as well , and re-oil prior to fitting ( not strictly fuel but important )

- Check inside the tank for any debris , water etc - make sure any breather holes for the tank are clear and able to breath in air ( this could restrict fuel flow )

- Check and clean the internal tank tap filter - After refitting check for leaks and refit hoses making sure all hoses are tightly fitted and no leaks and no splits or damage to pipes . - make sure fuel pipe is of adequate diameter and construction so as not to obstruct fuel flow . - fit and inline fuel filter if needed .

- There is also a small filter on the carb , behind the inlet connection clean this as well . - if the bike is running badly or will not start very well , then clean the carb out thoroughly

- Make sure all jets are correct sizes and set you float height correctly and clean the float valve and hole out as well while you there .

- Check the inlet manifold for cranks and correct fitment , any leakage here will affect the running of the bike and possibly cause a non start issue .

- check the reed valves hold the reeds up to a light source and you should not see much if any light source through them if you can its a sign of wear and will affect the running .

Here is a photo of the internal fuel filter and it clearly shows the fuel filter on the end of the internal tank fuel pipe , its worth stripping the tank tap down and cleaning out internally if problems persist .

No fuel: pipes on carb correct empty tank ?? not taking piss but if you do not have at least third of a tank it could be too low .

Cagiva fuel taps

The carb inlet filter is fitted behind the inlet connection pipe pull it

out and clean it as this could cause a

restriction in the fuel line

Cagiva mito reed valves

Obviously check for broken petals , correct fitting , and also check

for signs of warping are below.

You could just dump it all in your ultrasonic cleaner , get one they

are excellent

Going to do a post on not sparking , as just come across this again

a bike and id forgot everything

so had to go through all the tests again .

Id just like to say i am not really that good with electrics but i know

something test first , do not buy parts and read and learn as much as

you can .

First off check all easy stuff .

So -

Fuses , Check all of them , make sure they are seated corrected actually pull them out clean contacts and refit
spray contact cleaner in the terminals

Battery , make sure its fully charged remove from bike and recharge dont just guess ,
and whilst doing this clean up the battery terminals and the negative and positive wiring terminals .

If you have a voltage meter you can do some basic tests.
When the engine has been off for at least 1-2 hours with ignition key turned off,
100% Charged 12.60 to 12.8v
75% Charged 12.4v
50% Charged 12.1v
25% Charged 11.9v

0% Charged less than 11.8v

Connections and Connector blocks , go though all the connector blocks take them apart spray contact cleaner inside then then put them back together repeat this a few times on each connector as it will clean the contacting surfaces . If there are any home made repairs or connections redo them , its sound like a lot of work but ive lost count of how many non running bikes ive bought and its been a faulty wiring connector .

Side Stand and or Kill switch , fully confirm that these are working properly with a multimeter do not assume they are ok , do not buy any parts until you have tested these , ill do these tests on a post one day but they are simple , see the video below and the recommended book as well .

Generator test , tbh im sure the bike would run with a faulty generator but probably not for long
so i test this now , its an easy test and at the very least confirms it working or not .

Pick up coil test similar to a crank shaft position sensor you can test the resistance with a multimeter and check it against the measurement in the CBR 125 workshop manual and you can check the signal by back probing the wire connector and using a oscilloscope see this test here .

HT coil , Next i would test the ht coil , first id test the primary side for 12v whilst turning the bike over , if you have got 12v at the white and blue wire then test the coil if you have not got 12v to primary side of coil , then
its likely to be ECU ( if its not wiring fault ) , if you have 12v to here great you just eliminated all the expensive stuff .

CDI , if all else has failed try a known good CDI , but prior to fitting make sure all is funcition
properly on the bike it might of burned the old CDI out for a reason , ill do a CDI test post one day
if i can figure it out .

Rectifier regulator , You should have found the problem buy now ive never got this far , now
the rectifier only changes the output of generator to DC to recharge battery and run lighting system so this will have nothing to do with the ignition system , but some have told me they changed this and
they got a spark and seeing as all else has failed !! .
