Winter Warmer Infinity Scarf

The weather has most definitely got chillier in the last few weeks. Our Indian Summer has finally come to an end. I found this lovely variegated yarn at the Stitch and Knit show at Alexandra Palace last month.

It's 100% wool, and was a great bargain - only £3.50 per 100g ball. This scarf used two balls.

I didn't have a pattern, just knew I wanted an infinity scarf, in a pattern that would work up quickly. I guessed I had cast on enough stitches. Likewise, I hoped a 6mm hook would be suitable. Luckily it's turned out fine. Just right to wrap around twice, and deep enough to wear as a hood without leaving the back of my head freezing.

The yarn I used was a chunky weight. If you would like to make one for yourself, it was super quick to do. Finished it in 3 evenings, with no concentration necessary..... easy to do whilst watching the television.

If anyone would like to crochet one themselves, it's very simple to do - great as a beginner project.

Winter Warmer Infinity Scarf

Requirements 200g of chunky type yarn. (wool will be warmest) 6mm crochet hook.

Cast on 200 stitches. Join with slip stitch to beginning stitch to make a round.

Then simply work rows in treble* stitches. Begin by working 4 chains (1st treble), miss a stitch, then work a treble into the next stitch. Then work 1 chain, miss a stitch, treble into the next stitch.

Continue until you reach the last two stitches in the round. After working 1 chain, slip stitch into the first 4 chain treble you made, by putting hook through into the 3rd stitch, then slip stitching together. Work 4 chains and continue until the scarf is the required width.

I used the whole 2 balls of yarn, and my finished scarf is 13.5 inches / 35cm deep. It would have been fine narrower, but I wanted the extra depth to be able to wear it as a hood.

*This is UK treble stitch - stitches vary from US to UK, all the same - but the same stitch has a different name. If in doubt, check online.

Hillarys Blinds - Country Crafts Competition

A vision in Teal - front view

Towards the end of February I saw a competition advertised on Twitter by Hillarys Blinds. I can't remember the exact wording, but it was along the lines of "would you like to receive some material and enter our competition?"

Of course I would!

After sending an e-mail, I was delighted to hear I'd been chosen to take part. I was able to pick from 3 fabrics. I opted for the peacock print as I adore teal. About a week later I received a packet from Hillarys containing a metre of my chosen material. I wish I could get the colours to come out properly. I don't think any of the photos I've taken do the fabric justice. The background is a light cream, with the branches and blossom in subtle shades of brown and pale yellows. Sitting on the branches across the fabric are a selection of beautiful peacocks. In shades of teal, they are quite wonderful.

A Vision in Teal - back view

My first thought was; "I can make a fabulous roman blind for the bathroom", and then realised it may not be the best idea for a competition run by a curtain and blind company. So - thinking cap on!

I tried to imagine how I would like to see the fabric in situ. In my head I have created a vision of a spacious room, south facing, with a large bay window. There are roman blinds at each of the 5 windows around the bay, all in this sumptuous Hillarys peacock fabric. The rest of the room is a relaxing mix of natural oak furniture, with a sea-foam coloured carpet. There are huge sink-into sofas in a buttery soft pale beige leather. Around the room there are touches of teal and chartreuse to add a little zing. Pride of place across the bay window is a gorgeous chaise-longue in a rich teal velvet. Propped in the corner of the chaise is my "Vision in Teal" pillow. It brings the window treatment further into the room, and helps to integrate and enhance it. As a finishing touch; instead of flowers in the room, there is a tall floor-standing vase containing an arrangement of stunning peacock feathers and twisted hazel twigs.

Back in the real world, the pillow will fit into my bedroom colour scheme beautifully. My curtains are teal silk, and the pillow will decorate my bed, together with previous makes of mine. All the colours are similar, so they will sit together really well.

There were three different peacock designs on the fabric, and I was drawn to this one in particular. It was just asking to made a fuss of. The only problem was it was slap-bang in the centre of the metre of fabric. Having worked out the square I needed, I cut out carefully to ensure I would have a peacock well placed on the back of the cushion too. As a border for the peacock, I put together 5 complimenting fabrics from my stash. All these colours can be found in the Hillarys fabric, and again, I was imagining these colours in my imaginary setting.

If only the photo of the peacock would show in more detail! I have spent hours embroidering it. I have filled in the body with tiny seed stitches, using two shades of teal, with turquoise to highlight. In real-life it looks so vibrant and alive. On the eye, crown and tail area I have also added in a silver thread. It helps to highlight the face, and add a gleam to the glorious tail. As soon as I saw this tail I knew I had to root through my button box. My button box is huge, and now I think I can safely say I have used up my supply of teal buttons. In addition to the mix of teal buttons, I have also added quite a few small heart-shaped mother of pearl buttons too. Being so pale, they catch the light beautifully, and work so well as the crown of the peacock.

Hopefully you can get an idea of all the little stitches from this close-up. It shimmers in the light, and I've rather fallen in love with it. At the start, I had the idea of carrying on the embroidery on the branches, and adding french knots to the blossom. I would have been unable to finish in time, as the peacock alone took hours longer than I first expected.

To finish off the outside panel, I wanted to add a line of floral prose. After searching on-line, I couldn't find anything suitable by a classic author, so have done my best to think something up. I've back-stitched the "hand-writing" in teal perle 12 thread. The wording says:

I completed the pillow in envelope style. The back of the pillow features another peacock, with a piece of butter coloured cotton printed with a chartreuse flower. I added a piece of teal vintage lace to the edge of the flap. After sewing front to back, I then finished the edge by adding a binding. Luckily, I had just enough left to cut out the 2" inch strips required from the small piece of teal fabric in my stash. I've had most of these pieces for so long, I can't tell you where they are from. The teal fabric did have a tag on, pricing it at $2, so that one came from my trip to New England four years ago. A sale bargain, and I've used it at last!

It's taken a long, long time to complete, but I've really enjoyed making this pillow. The finished effect is beautiful, and I'm so pleased with it. Thank you Hillarys for sending me the fabric to take part. It's been an absolute pleasure embellishing your fabric, and I'd like to think I've done it justice.

And miracle of miracles, I've managed to finish it in time!

The three images above would be perfect printed onto stout card stock and threaded together to form a vintage banner. How lovely to place in the window of a period property. Or even better, printed onto fabric, and sewn onto a length of pretty lace. Beautiful!

Mermaid Musings

I did say I had a hunch about another couple of trends that may be forthcoming. I have a feeling that it's about time mermaids came to the fore. Folklore and legend combine in a dream of an artist's subject. I'm not thinking Aerial type creatures, I'm thinking sultry, glamorous beauty.

What a stunning photograph! I wish I could find the source, but sadly I can't link back to find out.

Isn't it lovely? It looks to me as though the model has been body-painted - with what looks very much like a real fish tail added on. It's a fabulous piece of art by a very talented photographer.

Another fabulous photograph. How wonderful is this? The colours in the mermaid tale are so beautiful. Oh to dive into lusciously warm water and swim! It looks divine. Yet again, I am unable to find the source. Such a shame, as I would love to see the photographers other work.

Finally! I've found one I can trace back. A crafty little mermaid this one, found on the Not your Grandmother's Needlepoint blog. It looks like a tapestry background, with the hair crafted from a type of ribbon that holds it's shape. I think it's rather stylish, and I love the addition of the little starfish and sea-horse.

I will end with this beautiful picture. Three alluring mermaids perching on a rock. I love the colouring, and the sky is wonderful. I've found the source - it's a Pirates of the Caribbean website, but it doesn't show who the artist is.

Hares and Graces

My goodness! I can't believe how long it is since I wrote a blog post. Where did the year go?

Hopefully, I am back! I've had months of trying to sort out my arthritis, and get pain management in place that works. Plus my sewing room has had a big sort out. So.... I haven't made anything for a long, long time. I have however, been Pinning tremendously - and have tons of ideas brewing.

What will 2014 bring I wonder? What will the next craze be? Owls are so passé..... I'm thinking the next big thing will be hares. Probably due to the John Lewis advert, but I'm noticing a marked increase in the number of Hare items Pinned. So, as a way of getting back into the blogosphere - let's have a little look at some of my favourites.

We see a lot of knitting graffiti, but I haven't come across a tapestry version before! I'm loving this. I think it really adds something to what would otherwise be a dull, uninspiring park bench. I wonder what it was embroidered with? A nice tough nylon string would last and last.

This is so pretty. Light and delicate, the machine embroidery stands out beautifully against the scrappy frame of lacework. I hope I am attributing this to the correct source - as I think this is a thoroughly talented make! It's utterly divine, and I would love to have it framed on my wall.

I do feel there's a hare themed make somewhere on the horizon. Or at the very least - an Easter bunny! In the commercial world, I'm wondering how long it will be before hares start appearing on everything from bags, to t-shirts, bedding etc?

There are two more trends that I think will be appearing soon too. I have no idea if it will happen, I just have a hunch. So..... look out for another blog post soon - and see what you think of my other predictions.

Hey ho skip to my Lou

Spring may not have sprung in quite the way we would expect - but I do seem to have shrugged myself out of my sewing hibernation. Goodness me - since coming back from holiday I have been in a stupor. Haven't been able to apply myself at all. However, my neighbour telling me her foster-child has a birthday soon has got my creative cap on. With a blue and red bedroom to match in with, I've rummaged through my fabric stash and run up this little pillow.

With the exception of the 14" Ikea pillow inside, the outer is up-cycled. The red fabrics were cut from pretty dresses I have found at car boot sales for next to nothing (I set my buying limit at £2 - but will only spend this if the dress contains a lot of fabric - more usually 50p or £1), and the denim and check background were once my husband's shirts.

You can find such great detailing on girl's dresses. I loved the beautiful embroidered hem to this dress. It's been perfect to make the back envelope opening of the pillow. The dress was lined - and I cut out a piece slightly shorter to back the pillow and give it more sutstance. Best of all - it came ready hemmed! Another little baby dress was cut into for the letter L. That had a pocket on it with pretty ribbon and broderie anglaise - which embellishes the letter with no effort whatsoever on my part.

This was so quick to make up - and entirely sewn together by machine. I began by cutting out the red check front as a 14" square. Realising I'm out of Bondaweb, I grabbed my shearing scissors instead. There wasn't really any planning involved - apart from knowing I wanted to include the name Lou. I simply drew the letters straight onto the fabric and cut just inside the lines. The hearts are random sizes as I folded the little scraps I had left over in half to cut them out. I couldn't resist adding another piece of the gorgeous embroidered hem to the front.

To hold everything in place I sprayed each piece lightly with temporary adhesive spray. I love that stuff with a passion - it really is magic, and worth every penny.

I won't pretend that the sewing is neat and precise - it's far from it. In fact I went a little mad with the machine. What was going to be a simple whizz around to secure the pieces, turned into a random stitch-fest. I didn't want to fasten off thread for each shape, so I zig-zagged, and scribbled my way around the pillow using a variety of stitches. I mean - when else do you ever use any of these stitches? When I first started going a bit manic with the machine, I thought I'd ruined it - but - I like how it's turned out. I'm particularly fond of the hearts - where I put the machine into reverse and whizzed to and fro for a zig-zag effect. I also really like the normal zig zag stitch going randomly over the top. I'll definitely be doing this again..... not only is it super quick..... it's fun too!

The two little gem stones were applied using my "JML gem styler". Another bargain car boot find - it has been great to add a bit of bling to makes - but sadly I am now nearly out of "stones", and haven't been able to source any. (It was those or a button, as they were needed to disguise a bit of the fabric I'd rucced up by mistake).

Once the front was finished, I layered it up with the envelope back in place and stitched around the very edge to secure. Then I completed the pillow by adding a binding. I cut 2" inch strips from a shirt back. Normally for a pillow I fiddle about with a narrow 1 3/4" binding - but though this denim was soft, it was thicker than I'd normally work with, and so I stuck with the 2" for ease. I really enjoy adding binding to work, and it is very simple to add a mitred corner. For my tutorial please click here. Rather than hand-sew the back in place, I held it down and whizzed around again with the machine. Okay - so up close it can be seen - but..... it took moments, and anyway - after looking at the work on some of the extortionate pillows on sale in John Lewis - I'm not going to let it bother me!

Sew there we have it ..... a no-fuss, no pins, no tacking, machine zapped pillow complete in around 2 hours. A unique personalized gift - and for next to nothing too.

Love doodling

Today, I've put my sewing aside. I've finished the top of my bed runner, and have to decide what to back it with. Instead, I bravely grabbed my sketch book, and attempted to draw something. I say bravely - as I can't remember the last time I actually did any proper drawing, and I get really cross with myself. I always know exactly what I want to do, but getting my hand to co-ordinate with my brain is usually a big fail. My finished doodle-like valentine girl is very simple and naive, but I rather like her. Currently debating if it would work as an embroidery? Or dare I try painting onto a canvas? The result would be tragic, and probably death to the carpet, walls and anything else within splatter distance.

Planning a Quilting layout

After much fiddling and generally farting about - this is the layout I've decided on for my bed runner.

I've given up on the idea of puffs...... once I realised how many squares it would take! I would have been well and truly out of puff by the time I finished. Does everyone take as long as me to decide on what's going where? Blimey - if I hadn't been so precious about it, I could have sewn half of it together already. I'm going to do simple squares. I don't want to overdo it, and take away from the pretty bedding I want to compliment. (though I may have to add a button or two).

I've worked out that I need 76 x 5 inch squares to make the runner. It's the closest I can get to the width of a super king quilt - leaving me a couple of inches to do an edging or binding of some sort. I would love to add a big bobble trim, but the cat would have a field day with it - so that's a no-no. Plus, anything on the bed has to be capable of chucking in the machine. Perhaps jumbo ric-rac if I can find a teal colour?

Amazingly, I cut so many squares for my Puffy Pillow - I had enough for the runner, with some to spare (I must have gone mental with the rotary the other day) - though the choice was running out desperately by the end...... hence lots of jiggling to make it look even. I've checked, and re-checked and don't think I have any two the same touching diagonally or in the same vertical row.

So - no guessing for what I shall be doing tomorrow. In the meantime, the door will stay firmly shut, or the cat will be learning how to fly.

Puffed up Feathers Pillow

I've got there in the end! One puffy pillow already for the bed.

The puffs were easy to do - and a good trial run for my next project of a bed runner to match. I actually think the pillow would look better if it was all puffs, but hey - ho - you make and learn.

Here's what I did......

Fabrics collected together. The finished pillow is 14 inches square.

Allowing 1/4 inch seams - I cut the centre embroidery at 7.5 inches.

Then 12 different squares of 5 inches each (top)

12 squares of 4 inches (back) cut from old white shirt.

There's no need to tack. Though pins are a must.

Begin by folding each top square in half (wrong sides together)

and run over with an iron at the edges.

Match up the corners with a backing square.

Pinch fold in centre, and fold down flat against the backing square.

Pin in place, and continue around, bending each fold the same way.

All squares pinned, placed, and ready to sew.

To join squares together, I carefully unpinned the edges -

pinning them with right sides together. Stitch.

I joined 2 each for the sides, and then the top and bottom row

then joined sides to centre, and top and bottom.

I included lace simply so that it will match another pillow in a different style.

Time to put the pins away me thinks!

Next, as the back won't be seen.... (and being very careful)

Make a slit in the back of each square.

Stuff (don't overstuff - this was my big mistake -

made it very difficult indeed to finish)

Sew each hole shut. No need to be precious, it will all be hidden.

Simply stopping the stuffing from escaping.

I finished by cutting a 14.5 inch square from the shirt, and sewed around the edges -

just inside the 1/4 inch seam line.
Neatly covers all seams and the raggy embroidery back.

Sewing Tip number 1 - always leave WIP upside down,

as you will come back moments later and find it claimed.

Phew.

It would have been a whole lot quicker to finish, had I not overstuffed the puffs. I really made it difficult for myself to join the envelope back and bind. It was such a fight to do, that in retrospect, I should have unpicked the holes and pulled some stuffing out.

I is a numpty.

For the back I have used a 14.5 inch width of polka dot fabric.

I've folded each piece in half to give more structure to the pillow.

Cut to length at roughly 2/3rds of the pillow, for overlap.

I finished the edge with a strip of aqua left over from cutting the front,

and a small band of blue ribbon (barely seen in photo).

For the binding, I cut two inch strips of fabric.

Joined on the diagonal, and pressed in half.

This binding is not my finest - as it was so blooming tricky -

but, I'm pretty good at it usually.

I think I'm quite pleased with it. Not really feeling the love as yet, as it's been such a bitch to finish off. Hopefully it will grow on me.

Ode to AccuQuilt

an afternoon of cutting - and I'm sending you a plea!

I've entered every giveaway, alas to no avail -

So desperately I send this rhyme and tell my hopeful tale.

I cut with skill, I cut with care - and yet it goes awry...

the ruler slips, the cutter veers - it makes me want to cry.

I waste such precious sewing hours, and strive for sliced perfection.

An AccuQuilt would help attack my massive fabricollection.

Oh AccuQuilt please rescue me - from cutting fabric hell,

I need some magic gadgetry (the likes of which you sell).

My husband shirks my buying need. So sadly I'm unable....

Though I sew a lot, I blog a lot - with perfect space upon my table!

So help I cry - please help me please - this cheeky English stitcher,

Forgive me for the begging bowl, but hope you get the picture.

I've read such great AccuQuilt news; through FBook, Tweets and blogs,

It's a desperate attempt to get my own, before I pop my clogs.

Gloverly stuff! A finished WIP

Sometimes I amaze myself!

For my sheer inability to finish things. I started these gloves two years ago.

Dragged them out last year - got sidetracked - threw them back in WIP vat.

Yesterday's blog featuring crochet glove patterns got me thinking about them.

Dragged them out again.

Finished in 5 minutes!

Good grief - I am a numpty.

Originally the sleeves after picking up the pieces after a fight between a washing machine and a cashmere jumper. Guess who won?

The resultant densely felted loveliness was not about to be wasted. The body of the sweater became a peg bag - which is now much used and in need of replacement. A shame as I love it - and must remember another time to line with stiff fabric to retain the shape. And the sleeves were destined to become fingerless mitts. So simple to do - I simply cut off just below the shoulder seam, and the resulting diagonal made a lovely shaped cuff when turned over.

After slicing a small hole near the seam for my thumb, I then went around all the raw edges in blanket stitch using a big darning needle. The yarn I used is pure wool, and was once a beautiful skein. Until I started trying to find the end. I have been dealing with spaghetti junction ever since - and by now there are probably about 80 ends in there..... somewhere! (and this is why I prefer balls of yarn).

For simple decoration, I have attacked my button box and tied them on randomly with two strands of yarn tied in a reef knot. And then, as I am happiest when fiddling about, continued to add little knot bows. I think I must have given up when I failed to find an end to the yarn in the jumble! Hacked a piece out this morning, and was complete in 5 minutes. :)

As you can see with the two side by side, I have left an unadorned space free for my palms. Finished result is definitely a one-off - and decidedly quirky, which suits me just fine. Now to wear them! I've modelled one on Skinny Bitch in the top photo as ......

She was remarkably unco-operative, and leaves me wondering how on earth window dressers manage - it's darned difficult to get those limbs to go where you want to, and they have a tendancy to drop off when you least expect.

And shhhh..... but I've found a lovely ball of scrumptiously soft merino yarn lurking in a dark place, and hoping it might be just enough to whizz up one of yesterday's patterns.

Hmmm - come out little hooks, wherever you are......

Hooking up for some free wrist action

By golly - it's chilly!

Although it's not snowing - it's definitely the weather for protecting the digits.

I'm not sure where mine are - having currently located one glove...... and I'm not as brave as Michael Jackson was to adapt it as a fashion "look".

Likely to remain with hands jammed firmly into pockets for the forseeable future.

Having found these fabulous free crochet patterns though - I feel an urge to get hooking.........

Note - you may need to be a Ravelry member to source their patterns. Well worth signing up as many are free - and you can store any patterns you like in your own "library" And - if you haven't entered into the world of Ravelry - be warned - you may be lost for some time! It's a whole world of yarny loveliness. A group I started some years back now has over 2000 members, and continues to carry on it's Oddballs theme quite merrily.

also - remember there is a difference between US and UK crochet terms - the stitches are of course the same, but the name for them is different. I have to double check every time!

Liking the wrap around style to these, though think they could be a bit longer -

there would be a definite draught between where they end and my coat sleeves begin.

(my fault for having stretch-armstrong style arms)

Loving the style, though I think I would replace the flower with a fabric covered button.

The yarn has caught my eye with these ..... it's gorgeous.

The stitch looks simple and very quick to work too - these would run up in no time.

Feeling the compulsion to crochet? Yep - me too. Though before I embark on any of these, I really need to get my act together and finish off embellishing a pair I began 2 years ago. (One has been finished for 2 years - the other probably only needs half an hour of so of fiddling with..... maybe next winter - yes?) And then there's the granny squares I've been making for...............ever. But a pair of gloves - I could do that in an evening! May have to pop into John Lewis and ogle the yarns. The price alone (for I always manage to lust after the dearest yarns available) should be enough to still the urge.

And - if you've never crocheted before.... don't be afraid to give it a go. I find it so much easier than knitting, and far more relaxing. There are a wealth of books to learn from now, but probably the best way is to learn from someone by sitting beside them. Or follow a YouTube tutorial - there's heaps of them available.

Absolutely Del-Art-ful

Today I should be doodling.

Or more appropriately I should be doing housework...... and then doodling.

Why doodling? Well - in an effort to structure my crafty life, I enrolled on a course to "Unearth my Creative Nature" - run by Jani Franck (I believe this course is now closed, but sure there are others to join - do take a peek at the website - it's very interesting and inspiring). I've thoroughly enjoyed reading the emails, and joining in the facebook group, but have of course done nothing in the right order. With the course currently on week 3, I am still pootling about the edges and not really doing what I should be from week 1. I can excuse myself a little, as wasn't sorted out from house move when it began. There is of course a limit to how long I can blame this for the delay.

I even wonder if my mind will even function in doodling form? I think my OCD tendancies struggle to maintain neatness and precision (fails, but tries). Back in the days of letter writing (anyone remember them?) if I so much as made a mistake on a sheet of paper I would have to start again. I'm the same with notebooks - can't bear to see an error, and thus have a wonderful collection of virgin stationery which may forever remain unsullied. How the hell can I doodle? I think in my whole adult life the only thing I've doodled are crappy flowers and trees that look nothing like trees whilst on the phone. Why I continually repeat these monstrosities remains a mystery. Somewhere out there is an analyst who could make a fortune from me. :)

In yet another doodle-delaying tactic, I have been discovering more arty inspiration this morning. It's so lovely, I thought I would share....... (and then clean.... and then probably take some cake to my neighbours.... and then I may hunt for my sketchbook - possibly as the light fades, when it will be time to start cooking supper). ha ha! Oh my - stop waffling woman - let's have a look at some loveliness.......

Vintage Inspiration

I adore vintage photography and artwork - and grab images to keep whenever I see something I like. Thinking along the lines of "I can do something with that one day" - the collection continues to grow.

Why do I love vintage so much? I delight in the charm of the old photography - the faded out delight that is sepia - and the naive pretty colours on old images that were hand coloured before printing. I love the harking back to another era - the clothes, the hair, the apparent gentleness. Most of all - I love the fact that any image over 75 years old is deemed to be royalty free - and is therefore free to use for any project, without the fear of being nabbed for copyright infringement.

Vintage images can be found anywhere! I can spend ages rooting through old postcards in antique and bric a brac shops. They are so cheap to buy, and I think they are simply darling. Some are just perfect to pop inside a frame for instant artwork - and others cry out to be scanned in and re-sized to be using in a sewing project. My French Boudoir Pillow was created from such postcards, along with vintage text sourced from The Graphics Fairy. If you're not already following this amazing source of all things vintage - do add it to your list. It's a must have site for vintage loveliness.

For adding to sewing projects they are a boon..... Since I've discovered the possibilities of printing onto fabric using speciality papers - there's no stopping the creativity (to add - I do need to start first though!) Check out Crafty Computer Paper to see what's available. their orders arrive really quickly. Personally, I'm not keen on the Pabric option, as it is quite stiff and I find it un-sew-friendly unless very careful. The washable cotton and canvas are a delight to work with. If you intend trying for the first time - I suggest printing a test run on paper first to ensure you are perfectly happy with the result, as the sheets are relatively pricey and you don't want to waste them. I find though, that with careful spacing - you can fit an awful lot onto one page of magical printable fabricable loveliness!

Today I've found some wonderful new pretties on Pinterest to add to my vintage page. This is just the tip of the iceberg, as I've also got a huge collection on my computer. Shall I share a few of my current favourites........

This little girl is adorable - and the colours are so gentle and pretty.

Would look delightful included in a pillow or quilt.

Though I deplore the colours in this fashion artwork, I think the simplicity would lend itself beautifully to a fabric collage/stitchery combo.

Anatomy of a Bird Stitchery

Some of you may have already seen the beginnings of my latest project. Woohoo - I've finished the stitching! Next step is to make it the centre of a pillow for the bed - I've picked out the fabrics, but yet to decide what I'm doing with them. So then...... my little bird...... How has he turned out?...

The inspiration - Matthew Williamson bedding

Initial sketch - the Sharpies crept blinking into the light gasping for breath, so long is it since they've been allowed freedom.

Simple outline drawn lightly onto fabric using a very hard (4H) sharp pencil.

Not much added at this point, as don't want to risk the pencil lines smudging the fabric.

Threads and fabric palette chosen :

The fabrics aren't a range, they're all picked at random from my stash.

The thread used throughout are colours in Perle 12 - love stitching with this thread, so much easier than fiddling about with 2 strands of embroidery skein tangliness.

First tentative stitches - looking rubbish at this point.

As colours are added - it's starting to take shape:

Confirming - you don't have to have embroidery skills to do a thread picture -

lots of little random stitches come together just fine.

Okay - so the finished effort is nowhere near exact - but close enough that I'm happy with it.

Ta-dah!

In real life the colours are brighter than shown here. The lime, teal and coral threads really zing.

Oo-er - best get deciding what to do with the fabric now.

New Sewing Room

It's wonderful to have my sewing space all sorted and ready for action (snort.... I will do things, I will not prevaricate). I even more or less know where to find everything..... though this morning's hunt for button thread remains a lost cause. Hubby will have to wait awhile to wear his jeans. I know I've got some - and hate buying something I already possess. It's not lurking anywhere it should be, so may be hiding in a project bag.

Anway - I'm drifting off! My sewing room, and it's mine.... ALL MINE :)

The removal men weren't to keen about carrying my dresser upstairs, but did it grudgingly. Skinny bitch is happily settled in to her new home in the corner. It's a shame she can't scare people who come to the front door anymore, but I'm sure she'll get used to her new role. Was one of the most amusing moments of the move - as when removal man carried her out to the van, her coat fell off (along with arm and leg) revealing basque and frilly knickers underneath.

My computer/sewing machine desk is tucked in the corner by the window. It's not the prettiest of desks, but it's incredibly strong. Felt confident to stand on it to drape a scarf around the curtain pole - and there's not much furniture I would attempt that from! And - as it only cost £8 from a charity shop - I think I'm stuck with it. Would like to pretty it up, but may draw the line at a piece of pretty oil cloth well secured on top.

I've done my darndest this time to avoid clutter this time - but hey - it's me, it's never not going to happen! Hence the windowsill is chocca with things I can't bear to hide out of sight. And for your information, the vintage Gin cask is empty - though I'm now wondering if it is water tight enough to hold an emergency supply of vodka? May have to give that a go.

Next to my desk is my cutting table - which should we ever get any sun ever again, will provide good light to see what I'm doing. Scissors and rotary cutter at the ready! The fabrics lined up in the basket (on top of yet more fabric supplies) are chosen to make a bed runner and cushion to match my new bedding.

Finally, this little dresser base houses my sewing library and jewellery collection. There's only a small selection of sewing books out on display - but I can assure you the dresser is packed to the brim. Oh - and yes - that would be more fabric boxes on the right!

I can't fail to be creative in this space - can I?

Sketching with Thread

Happy New Year everyone!

Oh my goodness - I can't believe how long it's been since I last blogged. Darned house move - it hasn't half stopped my craftiness in it's tracks. Good news though - I'm now moved, and very nearly sorted. Best of all - my sewing room is up and running - and mine, all mine!

Yesterday was the first time I have had time to call my own. I stood in the middle of my sewing room wondering what to do. I've pulled out a selection of fabrics to make a bed-runner to match my new bedding. But... before I started cutting into it, I noticed one of the birds on the pillowcase. So....
instead I have started a stitchery. I can't call it embroidery - as it is nothing like! Embroidery needs to be neat and precise. I have neither the time nor patience required. I am to embroidery what a 5 year old with a packet of crayons is to Fine Art. Still - I like to dabble.

I've sketched the bird lightly onto plain fabric with a hard pencil, and am now scribbling in with tiny stitches. All delightfully random - but as the colour is being added, it seems to be working - definitely from a distance anyway!

I'm aiming to make it the centre of a cushion top to match the bedding. (Thank you Matthew Williamson, and your Butterfly Dreams collection - I love it). Since I started yesterday and took this photo, I've moved onto a third colour, and I'm beginning to like it.

Time to stop typing and pick up my needle! Another 5 minutes at least to thread the blooming thing!

(note to self - you really must get that new prescription out and go and order your new glasses).

Little Snowman

Today's Christmas decoration is a little snowman. I've had the "Crafting Christmas Gifts" book by Tilda for a long time, and have never made anything from it. It's very simple to do, and I'm now tempted to do the larger ones as shown on the cover of the book.

Mine's just a little baby. I made mine in white felt, and it works. As it is tiny, the thick felt was a bit tricky to turn. Still quick to do, though in retrospect it would have been easier to use an ordinary cotton or linen. No idea what I shall do with this one. If I add a hanger for the tree it will look like he's been lynched. Perhaps do another two and stick them in those tiny ceramic pots to go on a shelf?

I can't share the pattern for this little make, as it's not my own. Even if you're not a Tilda fan (like what I am), if you love all things Christmas, you will adore this book. It's quite an old book now, but if you haven't come across it, all the makes are quite lovely, reasonably simple, with good instructions, all full of the usual Tilda charm. Currently £6.74 with free delivery from Amazon UK which I think is a fair buy, and less than the RRP on the back of my 6 year old copy.

Gingham Tree Decoration

Another day, another decoration.

This time a cheery gingham tree.... complete with felt heart, ric-rac hanger and star button topper.

I like the way this has turned out, but it took a lot longer than yesterday's Shabby Heart decoration. In fact, and bearing in mind it's the same size - it took as long to make one of these as all of the others.

Do I want to make another 5 of them? erm..... don't know! It may be a one off.

Despite being fiddly, it was still an easy make. Fancy making one of your own? Here's what to do....

You'll need a small scrap of check fabric. I've used (yet again) a piece cut from a sleeve of one of hubby's old shirts. It's a brushed cotton, and extremely well washed.

I drew a vague looking Christmas tree on a piece of card, and used it as my template. Folding my fabric with right sides together, I drew around the template to give me my sewing line. I then machined all the way around using a small stitch length, taking care to over sew the join. Don't leave a gap!

Next step was to cut around the tree close to the seam, nipping in slightly on an inside corner, and trimming edges on the outside corners.

Next I snipped a vertical cut down the middle of the front of the tree. Only about an inch, just enough to enable me to turn it to the right side. This took me quite a while, due to the odd angles to manoeuvre about.

Once all turned through, I wondered why I'd bothered. As trees go, this one looked mightily pathetic. At this point I very nearly chucked it in the scrap basket. Seeing as the stuffing was staring right at me I decided to persevere. You need something with a blunt edge to poke the stuffing into the "branches", and you need to pack quite a lot in or it just droops. Once happy with the shape, it's time to do a bit of open tree surgery and sew up the cut. Don't worry about it looking pretty, a few zig zags to tie it together is fine, as it won't be seen.

Finally I cut out a felt heart to cover the seam, and blanket stitched in place. I used a metallic thread, and big "rustic" blanket stitching. With the thread that was left on the needle I did a few random cross stitches, carrying the needle along inside the tree. There was just enough thread left to attach the ric-rac hanger and a wooden wonky star button at the top.

In real life, I think it looks better than the picture. It looks very "country primitive" and the metallic silver thread glints nicely. Darn it, may have to make some more to keep it company. My aim is to make 6 of whatever decoration I do. Bear with me, it could be a while until I get to the next one :) .

Shabby Heart Tree Decorations

I'm determined to make some Christmas decorations this year. Now..... I'm the least Christmassy person I know, but this year we are likely to be in a new home, in a new part of the Country (note to self) so I AM GOING TO MAKE AN EFFORT!

I'm thinking a shabby country theme, with a hint of red and blue. I've started off by making some tinkly little tree hearts. I'm rather pleased with how they've turned out.

So simple to make - only takes scraps - and you can run one up in 5 minutes. Promise. I timed myself, and though it took me over a minute and a half to thread the ribbon through the tinkerbell, the rest is a whizz.

Now..... I know that nearly everyone who reads this will see instantly how to make them. But.... just in case you are new to sewing.... this is what I did.....

Start off by drawing a heart on a piece of card to make a template. You will need 4 squares of fabric for each heart, so simply lay heart on top and cut a rough square. Draw around the heart shape lightly with a hard pencil. This will be your sewing line. (or use an air-erasable marker if you prefer).

Cut a snippet of ribbon and lay diagonally across the top two layers of fabric, and quickly machine down. Thread a tinkerbell through a length of ribbon, (good luck with this.... mine were an absolute bitch to thread).

Now put all the layers together. I've chosen to have a check back to my hearts, courtesy of one of my hubby's shirts. Starting near to the bottom right of the heart, stitch around on top of your pencil line, making sure you do a few reverse stitches to strengthen the seam.

Whizz all the way around, remembering to hold your ribbon down on top, and leaving an opening of about an inch to allow for stuffing. Again, remember to reverse a few stitches to secure.

Nearly done now.

I did say it was quick!

Now cut around your heart shape, leaving a border of around a quarter of an inch. No need to be too picky. Lightly stuff with filling of your choice...... toy filling, old pillows, odd socks snipped up, tiny scraps from your scrap basket, cotton wool...... and machine opening shut.

You may need to squige the stuffing sideways to give your machine foot room to sit on fabric. It soon squiges back again. (note... my spell-check is telling me that squige is not a word. It is, as far as I'm concerned - and I'm darn sure you know what I mean by it. As I hope you know full well what my other little made up words are.... only 6 in this post!).

To finish, trim the ribbon close to the stitching line, and then go around the heart making little snips.

Do take care not to cut into your stitching!

Plus, if you have any sense you won't use a pair of dressmaking shears, like what I am using here! It looks as though I'm cutting the heart in half! And quite honestly, knowing how clumsy I am, tis a miracle I didn't :)

Note to self.... please stop dropping pictures on your thumb, it does your nail no good at all

The final flourish is to scrubble the edges to make it look all full of shabbiness and charm.

I normally dampen things and throw them in the tumble dryer for raggy edges, but even I can see that these little mites would be a waste of electric. I found a vigorous rub with a nail brush to be very effective.

Then all that's left to do is to slide the tinkerbell (I know they're not called this, but I think it describes them perfectly) down the ribbon, and ta-da (or ting-a-ling) you're done.

I've done 4 of these so far, and think I will do another 2 before starting on another decoration.

So quick to make, I'm thinking they would be great tied to presents, adding a length of string instead of ribbon. Another time I would have placed a few cloves inside each for a festive smell too. Or embroidering an initial on each to spell out Merry Christmas for bunting. Oh dear.... now I've thought of that I may have to make one.

Lacy Boho

Oh my goodness - it's been so long since I blogged!

A combination of things...... moving house, hubby working away and so living in limbo between two parts of the country..... and suffering badly with arthritis (to the point where I've had to give in and buy a walking stick). I just haven't had the oomph to do any sewing. I have dragged out some crochet I last touched about 5 years ago - a blanket I will probably be the rest of my life making- or a proper granny at the very least by the time it's finished.

Yesterday, I finally did a bit of sewing. Very simple, very quick, and a bit quirky. I've made a scarf that I can definitely describe as boho.... here modelled by Skinny Bitch.

Grabbing three different fabrics, I simply cut long narrow triangles of different sizes and whizzed them together. No hems, no pinning (no idea what I was doing really until it was finished) - but the end result is my sort of weirdness and I'm rather pleased with it.

I measured the length of an existing scarf to ensure it would be the right size to wrap around my neck, and cut the largest triangle out of an old skirt using pinking shears. (This 50p car boot sale bargain has come in handy before, when I re-vamped a denim jacket for my daughter. So much material in a wrap-around skirt!

I found just enough trim to sew around the edges. Next I hacked at the back of an old shirt of hubbys, again with pinking shears - this time adding an edge of blue ribbon. The inside triangle was simply the corner of an old lace tablecloth...... ready trimmed! In hindsight, I do wish I'd tea-dyed this piece before sewing it together - as it would have been a more subtle, vintage look. Never mind. There's still three corners left for another attempt.

After laying them one on top of another, I just whizzed along the edge with the machine, whilst holding down some vintage lace on top. Then I simply snipped more pieces of lace and did another whizz along to attach them at random intervals.

Here I am doing my best stuffed hamster impression (think ~~hope desperately~~ I went a bit wrong with the cropping function on my phone). Oh - and the hair's changed colour too - I am now in the midst of a blonde phase.

I'm definitely going to be doing more of these scarves, as it was super-quick to do, costs next to nothing - and a great way of using up stash.

Simple Genius

Sometimes the simplest things really are the best aren't they? Saw this image on Pinterest (where else!) and wondered why this hasn't been adopted en-mass as a way of storing threads of all sorts.

So easy to wind around and secure the ends. I'm already thinking embroidery threads and narrow ribbons.

Shabby Chic? Definitely Shabby!

I did say I'd share my DIY disaster with you......

Brace yourselves - you may need sunglasses:

Snort! When I started the makeover I can assure you this wasn't my intention. I had a 70's dressing table that was a nice shape, but a vile wood. I thought I would transform it by painting it fuchsia to match my bedroom. 10 hours later (2 coats undercoat, 3 topcoat) it was looking good. Until the top coat starting to flake off before my eyes. I could have cried - indeed I think I did.

Since then it's been sitting in the bedroom annoying me. It's too heavy to lift out on my own, and anyways I've nothing else to replace it with. The thought of starting to paint it again doesn't bear thinking about. So in a DIY frenzy, I attacked it with wire wool.

I think I got a bit carried away! The result is something that gives a whole new meaning to shabby chic. However, at least it looks intentional and boldly scruffy. Anyone that dares to question my designer paint effects will be met with my best defiant Paddington Bear stare. In an effort to embrace it's individuality further, I may embark on adding some graffiti. The thought of me let loose with a spray can is a bit giggly - I may just have to give it a go!

My wall sticker is still staying attached to the wall. Loving it, and I think I will print out some more - hopefully in A3 size if I can get the computer paper that size. You can do your own so easily.

Pleased with the bright bed, even if it does take a few moments to sort the pillows morning and night. Plus it's given the cat a nice cosy place to cuddle in.

Not so pleased with my "chandelier". Which ever bright spark thought it necessary to wrap each of the bottom ~~crystals~~ plastic in cellophane before attaching to the shade wants shooting. So far I've broken two off in my attempt to get it off. What numpties! The wrapping is attached via the metal rings. Grrr. I suppose it was in an attempt to make it seem more luxurious, but at the princely sum of £7, I was just looking for a quick fix to shove up and forget about.

Wonder what my next DIY disaster will be. Knowing me, it won't be long - and I may be brave enough to share!

I've spent most of the morning putting up pictures, wandering around the place armed with hammer and nails. I think I have a bit of a thing going on where pictures are concerned, as I have absolutely loads. No particular style - as long as I like it. I am left with two looking for a residence now - which is a huge improvement on the mahoosive pile I was staring at earlier.

What with that, and the washing just about up straight and nearly dry - I think I may have excelled myself today.

With a cuppa to keep me company, I've spent a happy hour in the world of Polyvore This has to be the equivalent of colouring in for grown-ups. I've had great fun putting my "style board" together.
This is of course the style I would like had I..... a) the figure b) the bank balance and c) a big toe that would let my feet bend into heels. I can at least manage the make-up, though it's probably far too young for me. No-ones started pointing at me in the street yet, so I may be able to get away with it for a year or two more.
