Bittersweet news / After much thought and planning, I've decided to fold Cake + Milk Paperie and launch Caulfield.Co, a curated vintage general shop and daily blog. Deep breath.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your support since 2007, and I welcome you to share our Caulfield Co. journey. It's been an exciting start, and we can't wait to see what the future will bring forth!

I've a few major projects going on this new week; Holden's autobiographical school project, making favors for my friend Linda's book-themed baby shower, and a screenprinting order in two colorways. For the favors, I'm thinking of creating hybrid 'zine-journals, with quotes, excerpts from favorite childhood stories, and drawings... my mind is going on over-drive.

Saturday Morning

Spent such a lovely Saturday morning, conversing and catching up with a handful of spectacular friends over Stumptown coffee. To be honest, I sometimes inwardly grown at seemingly inconvenient scheduling (I had a lot of work to catch up with, but I must honor commitments), but in the midst of sharing with such beautiful hearts, I know this is time well-invested. And I never, ever regret it.

Schedule in a few hours with kindred spirits, despite your impossibly busy worklife; it is soul-quenching and renewing.

P.S. Just a random picture of a Holden abstract he drew a few days ago. I love how he numbered each shape.

Montessori Graduation

This morning, my family schlepped over to witness Holden graduate from preschool. These are a few of his friends: Colby, the cutiepie on the left, is his best friend, and Ezekiel, who is so sweet, is another classmate. Before the performance, I took a few pictures taken in the basement "holding cell."

I recorded most of the Disney-themed graduation performance, and started taking regular pictures post-show. The Woody hat is leftover from his costume (he also had a Woody shirt and a foam, weapon-less hip holster), and the balloon is a gift from my sister and I. Inflated Spongebobs on a stick really amuse me, and it's now permanent dresser decor.

We went to see Pixar's "Brave" with a lot of his classmates afterwards at the El Capitan in Hollywood, and the art direction was just beautiful. The sold-out theater was mass chaos, though, since it was the first show of opening day, with a lengthy choreographed live musical performance pre-show, complete with Disney characters. Fantastic for kids, though Holden kept asking when the movie would start. Ha.

Congratulations, my little baby! I can't believe he's going to kindergarten in the Fall!

Birthday Cake

Today is my sister's birthday, and I wanted to surprise her with a cake. Her favorite is Sweet Lady Jane's Triple Berry Shortcake, which is basically what you see here: vanilla cake, fresh seasonal berries, and freshly whipped cream. I added mascarpone cheese to the frosting, which turned out to be easier said than done; I went to three different markets before I found it. C dubiously persisted, "Are you sure it's called mascarpone?" He insisted it was a figment of my imagination. Sigh.

Holden, my Sous Pastry Chef. "It's so juicy, Mommy," he exclaimed, as he licked the cut side of the berries. I stopped him mid-air as he was about to nestle the de-juiced ones in the frosting. More blackberries for his belly. Btw, they always remind me of Peter Rabbit ("But Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-tail had bread and milk blackberries for supper.")

I sliced blackberries (my favorite) in half for the second layer, along with raspberries. Coarsely chopped strawberries went in the first. The whipped cream was so delicious; Holden, uh, "cleaned" both batters and all frosting implements.

Frosting a cake is a test of perseverance; this vanilla cake was so fluffy, the frosting kept ripping patches of it away, despite the crumb layer. I would've been happier with more frosting (because it is nigh addicting), though the recipe below did frost all of my three layers.

Mascarpone Frosting

1 Pint Heavy Cream

8 oz Mascarpone Cheese

1/4 cup sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

On medium speed, beat heavy cream until stiff peaks form.

In a separate bowl, whisk mascarpone cheese and sugar until smooth.

Fold in whipped cream until combined, and use immediately.

P.S. Consumed after dinner. So yummy!

Eames iPhone Cover

Yay - I sold my first iPhone cover from my Society6 gallery! I'm an avid iPhoneographer, and my friends are used to me stopping in conversation to snap away at whatever catches my fancy. I do own a Canon 7d, but my iPhone is so much more accommodating to my prolific proclivities. I snapped these Eiffel chairs on a February excursion to the Architecture + Design Museum, lured by the promise of Ray + Charles Eames.

One of my favorite Christmas gifts is Grace Bonney's hefty "Design*Sponge" (how I love Amazon wish lists), and it is so absolutely lovely! I love perusing other creative people's spaces, as it inspires me. Not that my home is at the caliber of those featured in the book, but if you're curious, here are a few of my favorite things.

I love jelly jars, primarily for drinking. Tall ones for water and juice, smaller ones for wine and whiskey. During parties; tea light holders. A bit of hot water will melt the wax right off. The trays are vintage cafeteria trays, a Salvation Army find.

Side note: I call my abode "The Aqua House" because it is painted in that exact hue. When I was searching for places, not one felt quite right until I saw this 1940s one. I didn't even have to see the little milk bottle door in the kitchen, or the pink-tiled bathroom, to know that I've arrived home.

My foyer. The US postage dispenser was from a prop sale near my house, and the Robin's Egg Blue microscope came nestled in the wooden box next to it, complete with prepped slides.

Advanced Calculus texts, a bright red mail box that was a birthday request six years ago, a crumbling edition of "Alice Through the Looking Glass," and a school pencil dispenser (another prop score).

I hosted an Apocalyptic New Year's Eve party this year (hence the 2012 pennants), and this is what's left of my bar: Cointreau, dry Vermouth and a vintage cocktail shaker. The bar menu listed the cocktail of the hour, starting from 9pm (Dark and Stormy, The White Horseman, Black Death), and ending with midnight champagne.

One of my road trip finds: a Polaroid Model 150. It came in a beautiful camel-colored case and I'm equally in love with both camera and compartment.

See what I mean about the case? I'm so in love. The terranium was a mass project that H and I embarked on one afternoon, and I'm hoping that my un-green thumb can be adept with hardy succulents. The movie-making-looking contraption is actually a pencil sharpener found at Wacko, a rad gift store in Hollywood. I can spend hours pawing through ephemera; I bought all of H's stocking stuffers there. And the British war propaganda poster, "Keep Calm and Carry On," is pretty iconic. Reminds me to breathe.

The other poster is of Pasadena's Norton Simon's "Surface Truths" contemporary exhibit from early 2011 that I took H to. Side note: to love me is to humor my attraction to rectangular objects, particularly if they're multi-functional. Hence, my obsession with vintage suitcases, posters, lunch boxes, trays, paper, books...

...rectangular wooden boxes that once proudly organized cassette tapes and VHS that I jokingly (not really) call "sculpture." Also, I love numbers (is this because I'm Asian?) and medical/office/elementary school type paraphernalia, so scales are another thing I love to amass.

Old and new cigar boxes (filled with calligraphy inks and stamps) and cream magazine files. The bottom metal rectangle is a rusted miniature Madeline tin, found in my favorite vintage store an hour north of Los Angeles.

H loves to collect sticks, and he had to contribute by propping one up. I should stop throwing them out by the dozens and start a collage. H constantly surprises me with his creativity, not only in 2d, but in 3d as well. I love his little robot, complete with swiveling eyes and multi-jointed arms. And I love H's chubby, precious little hands.

Embroidered Card Workshop

A few weeks ago, I held an Embroidered Card workshop at my friend Carolyn Sam and Isis Krause's pop-up shop, 8 1/2 x 11. That little person in the left-hand corner is H, busily embroidering his name like the little trouper mascot he is.

Carolyn made a set of cards with actual embroidery patterns and gradient thread colors. I wish I had a picture of them, dang it!

Our traditional Christmas brunch > pumpkin chocolate-chip pancakes, bacon (super crisp and not so crisp), scrambled eggs, orange juice, coffee. Mmmm

And of course, the gingerbread people sprinkles.

One of my most triumphant thrift store finds: Pokemon wrapping paper for little boy. Between my parents, my sister and I, we used the entire roll. My sister is the black kraft paper and masking tape, and I'm the brown kraft with red yarn and tape labels.

"'Do you want to come with me to the kitchen?'"

"'Yes," said the good monster."

"'Okay, let's go!" said the little boy."

"Schmolden and Hudder went and got a glass of water."

I thought it'd be memorable to have Holden author and illustrate a book for his goodie bags. We conjured the story by me giving him a line, and he'd brainstorm the next, until we had "The Good Monster." I'll post the story in the next entry.

Holden loves hearts, so I asked him to draw a few. I sewed double-layers of hearts together with navy thread, and label taped out names, and hot-glued pins.

Strawberry cupcakes with strawberry frosting, per H's request. Ms. Nel, his teacher, receives a puffy heart.

Having the kids sit outside to consume the strawberry-Oreo topped cupcakes was pretty genius of Ms. Nel. Dropped pastries, frosting-side down? Just a swipe of a napkin and we're golden.

Hearts on hearts.

In the evening, our family went to Giggles 'n Hugs in Century City (again, per H's request). There must be some magic about the huge indoor playground and free video games.

The Renegade Craft Fair is a large-scale DIY marketplace event, featuring hundreds of the best indie craft designers and makers around (held in six cities annually, with holiday events as well). I live off this stuff. And vintage stores! This year's fair (July 16th and 17th) was better than last year's, because it was cooler (temperature-wise) and especially because I was armed with my new camera (a birthday gift to myself yay)! I loved perusing the booths that caught my fancy (and there were a plethora), and most were so gracious to let me snap away. Regrettably, I couldn't post all of them, so I've selected just a sampling.

Activity truck - create your own letterpressed bag. Cute idea and wish I could've patronized it, but alas, didn't have time.

Rad DJ from 88.9 KXLU, a non-commercial, educational station broadcasting from the Westchester campus of Loyola Marymount University.

Custom hand-lettered stamps ($65) from Paper Pastries. I bought a map trinket box for my sister and me, and my friend Deb kept asking what I was going to put in it. Deb - they're being primarily used for earring storage on the go! One of the adorable ladies was wearing a beautiful cloth origami necklace from Homako.

A bowlful of cheerful manila gift tags by Table Top Made, a letterpress company in Santa Barbara co-owned by Karis van Noord and Sarah Wilkinson. I heart that city, with the ginormous Alice Keck playground and staircase-access beaches. Oh, and that arrow!

Gorgeous feather earrings and agate necklaces from M Stone. If you know me, you know I can't resist those "hippie" earrings (as one client called me on a modeling shoot last Monday)! I loved how they added billowy fabric to work with the industrial metal beams.

My friend Deb who came for traipse-support through Renegadeland. I forgot to grab the business card from Deb; my apologies that this beautiful jewelry is uncredited!

Sweet felt and fabric jewelry by Yoko Minemura of Homako.

Julie Bonifay's Magna. I fell in love, and didn't want to leave her booth! Those geometrical hues are. So. Beautiful.

Danni Hong and her husband, Nick, of "Oh, Hello Friend." Wish I had more pictures of her smile, but her charming booth was seriously busy and she was on the move most of the time.

My favorites were the perpetual calendar necklace (it served as a pendant) and a "Smile! Today is a new and beautiful day" stamp that I couldn't resist buying. I'm a sucker for stationery stuffs - what can I say.

Elinor Nissley, printer and designer of Krank Press. Totally thought I caught her hot pink converses - dang it! But now you know. Loved the neon tape against gray, and the Scandinavian/Japanese clean beauty of her line.

Beth and Mark Brickley of Hero Design Studio. I was mesmerized by the San Francisco and greyhound print, and then I realized: they both have robin's egg blue backgrounds. Mais oui!

Why I love The Renegade Craft Fair:

1. Outdoor lighting - perfect, since I love natural light

2. Meeting the creative forces behind the business - my favorite picture is of Beth and Mark in their booth

3. Inspirational - seeing all the different takes on stationery and art helps me shape Cake + Milk to be a more accurate depiction of who I am and what I love

Hopes for RCF LA 2012:

1. More affordable and a variety of eats and drinks! Bring back Blue Bottle Coffee and pastries! Live music, s'il vous plait! We were hungry and thirsty, but not for alcohol or uber-pricey Mexican/Cuban food (I love food, but not food with a capital $), and the cold treats truck ran out of... ice.

2. Keep the free stuff going. Last year, I scored a free tote bag; this year, photobooth photos from Magnolia Photo Booth Co.

3. Armed with more moola. It's near criminal to deprive so many beautiful things of a loving home...
