DigitalLife Event to Focus on Digital Lifestyle

DigitalLife, a consumer event to be held September 27–30 at the Javits Convention Center, may be “dedicated to educating consumers on what the digital lifestyle means in every aspect of life — at work, home and play,” but gift retailers within easy reach of the city may want to consider attending for a number of other reasons. The event will help them understand what is going on in the world of consumer electronics, what consumers are doing with technology on a daily basis and what types of gizmos and gadgets are attracting their interest — some of which retailers may even be able to incorporate into their merchandise mix.

The event will feature the latest digital elements in home entertainment, video games, digital photos and movies, the mobile lifestyle, wireless services, music and movie download services, eCommerce, broadband content, and more. Among the exhibitors are several digital scrapbook companies, as well as iRobot, which will unveil a new product. In addition, eBay is conducting eBay University workshops, one of which is entitled “eBay for Business.”

When the gun sounded on Detroit's 59-14 victory over Cleveland in the 1957 championship game, hundreds of fans stormed the field and carried linebacker and captain Joe Schmidt and quarterback Tobin Rote off on their shoulders.
One of those fans became a famous collegiate head coach.
A week later, 18-year-old Riverview High senior Bill McCartney was delighted to open Sports Illustrated and see himself -- identified by his varsity jacket -- in the crowd carrying Schmidt off the field.

"My high school band was invited to play at the game, and the director asked me if I would like to come along, so I got in without a ticket and stood on the field," said McCartney, the former University of Colorado football coach and founder of the Promise Keepers.

"I was a linebacker, and Joe Schmidt was my hero, so I immediately ran to him at the end of that unforgettable game. It was such a thrill to be there on the field with Schmidt and later showing everyone the Sports Illustrated photo."

Biggest concert of the year on a morning news show? NBC's "Today" wins that race on Friday.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will play Rockefeller Plaza that morning. Springsteen and the band will perform their hits and songs from their new CD, "Magic," which will be released Tuesday. They also begin a concert tour Tuesday in Hartford, Conn.

The Springsteen interview is scheduled for 8:20 a.m. He will perform his first song at 8:30 a.m. He is scheduled to play five songs, but is known to go longer. I think the Rockefeller Plaza crowd would make him want to play longer.

Opening night of VAN HALEN's long-awaited reunion with David Lee Roth literally kicked off with several of Roth's highflying kicks at Charlotte Bobcats Arena on Thursday, although Eddie Van Halen was the first to appear on stage with one of his own signature hurky-style jumps.

The last time VAN HALEN performed in Charlotte with Roth as its frontman, he had just turned 30, gas was $1.21 a gallon and tickets to the show at the old Charlotte Coliseum were $12.50.

Twenty-three years later, the band's original members are all over 50 and guitarist Eddie Van Halen's 16-year-old son Wolfgang has replaced original bassist Michael Anthony.

The show sold out in a matter of minutes in August, and the arena was packed when the band hit the stage around 8:30 p.m., following a short but sweet set of pop and reggae-tinged R&B by Kymani Marley.

Fans assumed after well-publicized fighting, ill will and a couple of false starts over the past 11 years that the group would never reunite. But earlier this year the Van Halen brothers announced that Roth would rejoin the fold. If the group can keep egos and tempers in check (sources say the three original members arrived on separate buses for rehearsals), the reunion could be the biggest tour of the decade.

Any animosity wasn't apparent on stage as Roth and Eddie Van Halen saddled up next to each other, smiling, during "Everybody Wants Some" and "Dance the Night Away". Roth and Wolfgang Van Halen even sang "Pretty Woman" side by side.

'Big Shots' Takes Off Tonight

our familiar faces on television return to the small screen that has brought them fame and stardom tonight, when Big Shots debuts on ABC at 10. The Practice's Dylan McDermott, Alias' Michael Vartan, Titus' Christopher Titus and The West Wing's Joshua Malina star in the new drama about the lives of four dysfunctional corporate bigwigs.

Big Shots takes a close look at the personal and professional struggles of rising AmeriMart Industries executive, James Walker (Vartan), Reveal Cosmetics CEO Duncan Collinsworth (McDermott), Alpha Crisis Management senior vice president, Brody Johns (Titus) and pharmaceutical firm CEO Karl Mixworthy (Malina). While their careers appear to be on the upswing, their romantic entanglements often throw the rest of their lives into chaos and jeopardy.

In tonight's series opener, James, the moral fulcrum of the show, experiences work-related anxiety and stress due to a corporate shakeup. This, however, doesn't compare to the stunning discovery he makes about his wife Stacey, played by Wendy Moniz, who he finds out had been carrying on with his late boss.

For his part, Duncan is reveling in his professional life, having steered his cosmetics company into a bona fide industry leader. Unfortunately for this sexy divorcee, rumors of an indiscretion threaten to undo all that he has built and worked hard for. On the homefront, he continues to engage in sexual dalliances with his ex-wife, Lisbeth (Paige Turco) and is overcome by jealousy when she goes out on a date with someone else.

Meanwhile, Karl gets increasing pressure from his extra-marital relationship when his shrewd and cunning mistress, Marla (Jessica Collins), starts hogging all of his spare time. While he tries to comply with her increasing demands, this sweet and fidgety executive agrees to see a marriage counselor with his loving wife, Wendy, played by Amy Sloan.

Finally, Brody appears to have it far easier than his three other buddies. About the only thing on his mind is to plan and execute a flawlessly spectacular birthday bash for his wife. Nothing else matters unless he is able to accomplish that task.

Microsoft launches Office Mobile 6.1

Microsoft has released an updated version of Office Mobile for Windows Mobile 6 phones and PDAs. The biggest change is that Microsoft has added support for Office 2007 documents.

It kind of baffles us that Microsoft would release Windows Mobile 6 around the same time as Office 2007 and not automatically include support for docx, pptx, and xlsx documents, but it's nice to see Microsoft catch up with itself here.

This is the first time that Microsoft has issued an Office Mobile update directly to consumers. Typically Office Mobile is built into the Windows Mobile operating system and is only available from hardware makers.

Office MObile 6.1 also includes:

* Enhanced charts in Excel Mobile
* Ability to view SmartArt in PowerPoint Mobile
* Ability to extract files from zipped folders

The upgrade is free for Windows Mobile 6 users. While a number of sites are reporting that you can download the update directly from Microsoft, the link doesn't seem to be working for us at the moment. If anyone has a better link, please let us know.

Anthropoid came from the Greek for "of human likeness". In biology it is used interchangeably with simian. It was mentioned on the American television show "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader" on FOX in a $50,000 question

Operation Anthropoid
During World War II, the Czechoslovak-British Operation Anthropoid was the code name for the assassination of top Nazi leader Reinhard Heydrich. He was the chief of the Reichssicherheitshauptamt (RSHA) (Reich Main Security Office), the acting Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, and a chief planner of the Final Solution, the Nazi program for the genocide of the Jews of Europe.
Seven soldiers from the Czechoslovakia’s army-in-exile in the United Kingdom, Jozef Gabčík, Jan Kubiš (Anthropoid) and two other groups (Silver A and Silver B), were parachuted by the Royal Air Force into Czechoslovakia on the night of December 28, 1941. This was not the first SOE operation; there had been several before. Gabčík and Kubiš landed east of Prague; although the plan was to land near Pilsen, the pilots had problems with orientation. The soldiers then moved to Pilsen to contact their allies, and from there on to Prague, where the attack was planned.

In Prague, they contacted several families and anti-Nazi organizations who helped them during the preparations for the assassination. Gabčík and Kubiš initially planned to assassinate Heydrich on a train, but after exploration they realized that this was not possible. The second plan was to assassinate him on the road in the forest on the way from Heydrich’s seat to Prague. They planned to pull a cable across the road that would stop Heydrich’s car but, after waiting several hours, their commander, Lt. Opálka, (from the group Out Distance), came to bring them back to Prague. The third plan was to assassinate Heydrich in Prague.

On May 27, 1942 Heydrich proceeded on his daily commuting journey from his home in Panenské Břežany to Prague Castle. In a hurry, he didn't wait for the customary police escort. Gabčík and Kubiš waited at the tram stop in the curve near Bulovka hospital. Valčik was positioned about 100 metres north of Gabčík and Kubiš as lookout for the approaching car. As Heydrich’s open-topped Mercedes-Benz neared the pair, Gabčík is said to have stepped in front of the vehicle, trying to open fire, but his Sten gun jammed. Heydrich ordered his driver, SS-Oberscharführer Klein, to stop the car. When Heydrich stood up to try to shoot Gabčík, Kubiš tossed a modified anti-tank grenade at the vehicle, and its fragments ripped through the car’s right fender, embedding shrapnel and fibres from the upholstery in Heydrich’s body, even though the grenade failed to enter the car. Heydrich managed to return fire but soon collapsed. Klein was killed in a manhunt in pursuit of Gabčík. Heydrich died 11 days later from septicemia (blood poisoning).

Superstition, as of today's understanding, is thought to derive from the Latin words "super" (over, beyond) and "sto, stare" (to stand). Therefore, superstion means one who overly stands, or not being progressive. However, as all of the "new" religious beliefs were being spread from big city to big city, all the people who were in the country didn't receive the word, so they kept doing what they had been doing for a long time. Their beliefs were eccentric when they moved into big cities. They were "superstitious" because they weren't doing what was new. Evenutally the English word "superstition" came to imply a religion-like belief that stands outside the bounds of clerical religion.

In modern English, the term "superstition" is also used to refer to folkloric belief systems, often with the intention of deriding another culture's concept of the spiritual world.

Many superstitions arose before and during the time of the Black Plague that swept over Europe. During the time of the Black Plague, Pope Gregory I the Great passed a law requiring people to say "God bless you" when somebody sneezed; this was said to prevent the spread of the disease and to cure whoever already had it.

Lots of superstitions surround weddings and honeymoons, more because of the obvious connection to fertility, conception and childbirth than actual luck or love in the marriage which was of secondary importance when such a high percentage of women died in childbirth. Some examples -

Never choose a redhead as your bridesmaid as she will steal your groom. Likewise, wearing red to a wedding signals disrespect for the bride.
Saturday is a bad day for getting married as it is ruled by Saturn, an unlucky planet associated with negative energies like jealousy

Always make sure the sun is shining without clouds in the way; the clouds symbolize trouble.

A BUSINESSMAN who claimed to have invented a spray that acts as an "invisible condom" faces fines of up to $400,000 for misleading his investors.
The corporate regulator yesterday obtained orders in the Federal Court of Australia declaring that Ravi Narain's former employer Citrofresh International had engaged in misleading conduct in contravention of the Corporations Act.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission's proceedings against the organic anti-bacterial product company Citrofresh and Mr Narain arose from two "misleading" statements to the Australian Stock Exchange dated September 27 and 29, 2005.

The Court declared Citrofresh had engaged in misleading conduct by falsely stating it could "offer a global solution to reduce and eventually stop the spread" of HIV.

ASIC also claims Citrofresh had said "without reasonable grounds that the use of its product as a post-coital application would act as an invisible condom and that this would have a significant impact on reducing the transmission of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases".

The firm said it planned a range of products to be used in the first instance for men's health - a post-intercourse spray.

And the court court heard that Citrofresh had claimed that its product provided a "non-hazardous, non-toxic and effective solution that dealt with emergency disease control and prevention for HIV, human influenza A virus, SARS and human rhinovirus".

The hearing of ASICs proceeding against Mr Narain took place late last month.The Federal Court has reserved judgment in ASIC's claim against Mr Narain, who has resigned as managing director and as a director of Citrofresh.

He could be hit with a $400,000 maximum penalty for the two allegations that he engaged in misleading or deceptive conduct and failed to exercise his duties as a director with a reasonable degree of care and diligence regarding the announcements.

The ASX statements resulted in Citrofresh's share price surging more than 160 per cent, at one stage hitting 70 cents.The company yesterday consented to the court order and will pay ASIC's legal costs.

NEW YORK, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- The third annual "Clinton Global Initiative" begins here on Wednesday, bringing together world leaders in the fields of business, government, science and religion.

Developed by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, the three-day conference aims at addressing some of the world's most pressing issues, including energy, climate change, education, global health and poverty.

Participants make commitments to work on one of the topics and then report on their progress throughout the year.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, celebrity couple Brad Pittand Angelina Jolie and tennis star Andre Agassi are expected to attend the conference.

Last year the conference raised over 7 billion dollars.

On the first Dancing With The Stars 5 results show, host Tom Bergeron kicked things off with a recap of the men’s performance show. Len Goodman said “All of us judges felt that this was without doubt the best start to any season.” The judges selected Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas to dance an encore of the Cha Cha Cha.After the encore, hosts Tom Bergeron and Drew Lachey revealed that the first two couples that were safe were Sabrina Bryan & Mark Ballas and Jennie Garth & Derek Hough. Country music star Dolly Parton made a special guest appearance to perform “9 to 5.” After Parton’s song, Bergeron and Lachey revealed that Helio Castroneves & Julianne Hough and Albert Reed & Anna Trebunskaya were the second two couples that were safe.

Special guest Tony award-winning Savion Glover tap danced, and Dolly Parton returned to perform “Better Get To Livin’” from her album “Backwoods Barbie.” In a comedy segment, Kenny Mayne went on a quest to find the origins of dance. Bergeron and Lachey revealed that the third couples safe from elimination were Melanie Brown & Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Cameron Mathison & Edyta Sliwinska.

After a commercial break, Bergeron and Lachey revealed that Jayne Seymour & Tony Dovolani, Wayne Newton & Cheryl Burke, Marie Osmond & Jonathan Roberts, and Floyd Mayweather & Karina Smirnoff were all save. The bottom two when the judges’ scores and the viewers’ vote were combined were Josie Maran & Alec Mazo and Mark Cuban & Kym Johnson.

As the two couples waited on stage, Bergeron announced that Josie Maran & Alec Mazo had been eliminated from the competition. When asked if she had anything to say to anyone, Josie Maran said “Well, I guess, thanks for being honest. Is that what it is? And thank you for this amazing experience, and thank you Alec. You’re an incredible teacher, and this has changed my life. I have the dancing bug, and I’m going to dance alone.”

lifestyle is the way a person lives. This includes patterns of social relations, consumption, entertainment, and dress. A lifestyle typically also reflects an individual's attitudes, values or worldview.
Having a specific "lifestyle" means engaging in a characteristic bundle of behaviors that makes sense to both others and the self in different times and places. Therefore, a lifestyle can be used to forge a sense of self identity and to create cultural symbols for the way a person is. The behaviors and practices within lifestyles are a mixture of habits, conventional ways of doing things, and reasoned actions.
In business, "Lifestyles" provide a means of targeting consumers as advertisers and marketers endeavor to match consumer aspirations with products. Lifestyles refer to patterns in which people live, spend time and money. These patterns reflect by demographical factors (the habits, attitudes, tastes, moral standards, economic level and so on… that together constitute the mode of living of an individual or group); that include things such as the individual’s activities in addition to their interests. As a construct that helps consumers interact with their worlds, lifestyles are a subject to change every time. Consumer behaviour research uses lifestyle data to determine which consumers by products.
In environment, "Lifestyles" are often assocaited with particular footprint. Green lifestyles are those lifestyles that consume less of the planets resources then other types of lifestyles.
