Cake Girl Creates Frosted Fantasies

Booby Alert! Breast Cancer Awareness Cake

2012-10-13T15:02:00.000-07:00

October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In honor of all those who fight to cure cancer I thought I would share a special cake I made.
The local hardware store, Ward's Do It Center, asked me to make them some sort of breast cake a couple years ago for an auction they were attending for Breast Cancer Awareness.

This is what I decided on. A torso cake with a pretty pink bra seemed perfect. yet I wanted it to stand out, so i made it stand up! Successfully, I am proud to say, it raised the most money there! I wish I had better pictures of it but maybe someone out there does!

I just pray it didn't go to some creep! HA HA HA!

I figured it was art, and for a good cause, not trashy, so I was cool with making it. My favorite part is all the detail. The lace, tattoo, flowers, and initials.

This is also gives me a unique opportunity. a different sort of breast cancer awareness. Prevention. Everyone knows to go get checked, but did you know that breast feeding your baby is a cancer fighter?! Plus the longer you do, the better it works, adding more and more benefits for you and your baby. Talk to your doctor about it today.

Pretty fun and an honor to help out such a great cause as Breast Cancer Awareness.

So whatever the saying you want to plug in for you to remember, do so now. Go get your mammograms and your paps, done! Use October as your yearly anniversary to do it. Or give yourself a great birthday present and call your doctor today to set it up for the same week. Pretty much all doctors book in advance. So don't use any excuses. Call today!

Have you ever made a dessert for an auction? Have you ever had a cake auction?

Forest Fire Helicopter

2012-09-25T20:42:00.001-07:00

This one was for an awesome company who flies helicopters that put out forest fires. Pretty cool huh?

Now that my husband is a fire fighter, it is even cooler.

All the fire, water, and trees were free hand frosted right on the cake with butter cream. YUM! The blades are made of dark chocolate piped into shape. This custom cake was styled exactly like the picture of the actual helicopter they use. I even got to see it land as I was dropping it off. Super awesome!!!

Camping Cake

2012-07-09T20:07:00.004-07:00

Summer is by far my favorite time of year. AS a family we love to be outdoors. In honor of all things summer, here is a special cake! One of my favorite creations, because of the details, I take pride in sharing my design. This camping cake is actually totally sugar free! I made a special sugar free fondant for one of my diabetic friends. Which ended up sort of shiny and translucent. At first I panicked, but as usual, what I view as a huge mess up, leads to be my favorite part of the creation at hand. The car was fashioned after one her dad had as they were kids. There are even diabetic thin mints for the wheels. Growing up we always went camping. Creating a scene of pure camping joy was so fun, I can't wait to do it again!

Complete with marshmallows and a fishing pole!

I love the fish in the water.

Then a little edible sparkle to make it glisten. They absolutely loved it! The perfect cake for the perfect outdoor family. If you like it, follow us on facebook and pinterest! Thanks everyone! Don't forget make it a great summer! Go camping!

Leaping Lizards Cake Girl!

2012-05-21T15:39:00.000-07:00

On my oldest's fourth birthday, my animal and lizard lover, asked for a chameleon cake. Actually, at first it was a leopard gecko cake, then he changed his mind.

I piped melted white chocolate that I dyed green for the lizards and trees. then I covered the rest in home made butter cream frosting! YUM!

The cupcakes were a hit too with heart sprinkles to match!

Well, I think it was a success!!!

Sponge Bob Cake

2012-05-11T10:26:00.000-07:00

This year my six year old son, picked a Sponge Bob cake for his bowling alley party.

He absolutely loved it!! I swore before he was born, my kids wouldn't watch this show, but...

My funny fire fighter hubby has a quirky silly sense of humor the boys and I share.

We are always laughing and find humor in just about everything. LOVE it!

So I couldn't put too much of a fight up when the little boys and my bug boy bonded

over this silly yellow sponge's annoying laugh, or oddly smart humor, once you watch it.

I suppose I survived sneaking the Simpsons' and MTV in at a friend,s house, they will survive this too.

One Quack of a Baby Shower

2012-05-01T12:32:00.001-07:00

There it is!! The cake I made for my self.

Actually, this is the very first cake I have actually made for me. Usually it is a birthday or something for someone else, but not today! Well, it sort of is for the baby kicking me from the inside out, I suppose. Oh well!

This party was held at the fire station my hubby works out of. Not planning on making anything but a baby butt cake, my design emerged at about ten o'clock at night. I was working the white fondant, thinking of what color to make the blanket. Envisioning what pattern I could make. Since I was going the easy way and decorated with rubber ducks in cups, I thought I could throw some duck on it. Trying to keep it simple, since I know I can get lost in the details of a cake, I convinced myself it was an easy shape to cut out and it wouldn't take long at all.

I should have known...

Then, I started thinking about a little fire fighting rubber ducky my boys used to have, when they were babies. I thought, "Oh that would be cute!" Before I knew it, the time had flown by and it was one o'clock in the morning, and I was brushing off edible blue sparkles off of my hands.

It was totally worth it! This baby butt and baby feet cake were a smashing hit. The fact that it was a firefighter duck cake made it even more special. Thanks me!!

Baby Blocks Cake

2012-04-13T10:29:00.001-07:00

Here is the first cake I made for a baby shower. I absolutely love how it turned out!

It is very easy to personalize. For example, the letters on the blocks are from the parents' names. This would be a super fun cake to use as the announcement on the sex of your baby. You could use all sorts of colors to keep everyone guessing. Then when you cut into the cake, it would be blue or pink to show what your bundle of joy will be!

Being 8 months nearly pregnant, has me thinking about what cake I am going to make for my shower next week. I wish I had the ability to keep a secret. Maybe I could have done a baby sex announcement cake. But, ya, I am not very good at keep my excitement. It is super uper duper hard! I would be better to hire a baker and have the doctor just tell them! Could you do it?

A Firetruck for Buck

2012-04-09T12:47:00.001-07:00

This is Buck's truck...

This is Buck's truck on cake.

Any questions?!

Little fire helmets.

Yummy cookies for the wheels.

If you can even see the original picture of this classic fire truck, you can appreciate the work it took to get this done. That dark tiny thing was on my phone and it was the only pic I had to go off of. Again, this is for my favorite customer, a fellow fire fighter named Buck. The inside was chocolate and strawberry with chocolate ganache, then sculpted in fondant.

This was my first fire engine cake I had made so it was pretty nerve racking. Anything for our firefighters though! Thank you to all who serve! This one's for you!

Lace and Ribbon Cake

2012-04-07T11:56:00.003-07:00

Happy Easter Everyone!!!

Striped Wedding Cake

2012-04-06T09:44:00.001-07:00

These flowers took me over ten hours to make out of fondant. The bride showed me a picture of the flowers she was carrying in her bouquet. Then a picture of a striped topsy turvy cake. This was only my second topsy turvy and my first wedding. I was terrified but determined, ya know. The pressure was on!

I am very proud of how it turned out. The final touch of edible sparkles really made it, well, shine.

Super Mario Brothers Cake

2012-04-04T11:38:00.000-07:00

"Move... your... hips.... from side to side! Come on all , it's time to do... the Mario! Just take one step, and then again... Come on all, it's time! Do the Mario!!! All together now! Just like thaaaat!"

Do these lyrics sound familiar to anyone else? Or am I the only 80's child out there? Well go Netflix it, because my kids are obsessed with the Mario Show. I totally remember singing this with my brother and sister after school. Now my boys do.

Logically my second son had to pick a harder, more elaborate cake after my other son's choice from the last couple years. While my oldest chose a chameleon cake with cupcakes and then a Sponge Bob this year, my second's choice of Elliot Moose was now considered "baby cake". Therefor a big boy cake would compose of Super Mario and Luigi, and Yoshi.

Well, it was super fun to make. My kids kept adding little things to the requested design. Mom, you can't forget the pipes, and a coin. Oh! And you have to put one of the brown guys.... and a piranha plant! You have a piranha plant!

So, what do you think? Does it make you wanna break out your Nintendo, put the game in, take it back out, blow in the game counsel, then in the game itself, put it back it, put a little piece of cardboard to hold it down in the counsel so it will read it, then close the lid, (or you would if it hadn't broke off in the first few months), then sit back and play Super Mario?? Yes!

My second, proud of his choice in cake! Rock on dude! Happy 4th birthday!

Tiered Rose Wedding Cake

2012-04-02T16:40:00.000-07:00

My tiered rose wedding cake was one of the biggest honors ever! To make the wedding cake for two of the people I love from the bottom of my heart. To see them meet, grow, and change for each other. Than to finally see the people they were meant to be, once they found and completed each other.

The bridesmaid's flowers were all hand made by the bride, out of died tissue paper. So I tried to match the fondant roses I was making to the sort of coral, to pink, to orange color she had . It turned out gorgeous!

We partied like it was 1999. Even though they probably have no idea what that song even is. LOL!~

Makes me want to have a wedding and a cake all over again!

Love you Wendy Star!!!

Oh Gnomeo! Where For Art Though Gnomeo?

2012-04-01T20:32:00.003-07:00

One of the cutest cakes I have ever had the pleasure of making has been this adorable gnome cake. One of my best customers, one who comes each year for their birthdays, and has a super fun idea, and also lets me run with it.

He had a cute little crushed Oreo dirt garden, complete with toadstools made with vanilla wafers.

His little suspenders were so adorable.

I love his little gnome cake ears!

He was ready to go to work with his little rake.

He looks like he is going to wink at me any second!

The perfect cake for any gnome fan.

Happy Winter Cake

2012-03-31T20:19:00.003-07:00

Living in Michigan, though this winter was very

mild, we have to have a reason to celebrate! What better reason to celebrate than cake?!

So, put your snowballs down and, "let them eat cake!"

Elliot Moose Cake

2012-03-31T18:36:00.002-07:00

Elliot, Elliot, Elliot, Elliot Moose. He's on the loose. Elliot Moose, he's on the loose... Elliot Moose is on the loose! Elliot, Elliot, Elliot, Eliot, Elliot, Elliot...... This was the choice for my second son's third birthday. It was his favorite show. It involves people dressed up like a moose, a sock monkey, and a lion. They play in a backyard around a tree. This cake was a ton of work but worth every second to get a special memory for my son.

A Tasting For Your Bridal Pleasure

2012-03-31T17:52:00.002-07:00

Whenever I have several wedding cakes to make in a short period of time,

I have a bridal tasting party. Brides love it. Any chance to talk about weddings with other soon to be brides, is always a great time.

Here we have five of my favorite and most popular flavors.

A refreshing and light key lime cake.
Perfect for a spring wedding.
Fresh and tasty with a hint of lime butter cream frosting and a sugared lime test to top it off.

For my chocolate lovers, my strawberry and dark chocolate ganache layered in between the best chocolate cake you have ever had. Topped with butter cream and whipped dark chocolate ganache, it is fabulous!

This darling is my favorite in the fall season. A delicious caramel vanilla cake, layered with real apples, and caramel frosting. It tastes just like caramel apples! Covered in rich butter cream and topped off with more caramel frosting. So good!

For my white chocolate lovers, this one's for you! I used to be allergic to regular chocolate, leaving me the only kid in the school to get a white chocolate bunny in my Easter basket. Now, I actually really like it, though I did rebel against it for years, vowing never to eat it as a substitute again. This white cake is a refreshing change. I love putting raspberries in the middle coated with a layer of white chocolate ganache. Then I smothered and dripped the ganache over the butter cream and down the sides. So pretty!

This could be one of my all time favorite flavors
in everything, the turtle. It is made with a caramel cake, caramel frosting in the center, a toasted caramel pecan crusted layer in the middle, dark chocolate ganache hardened on the outside. Topped with some more pecans and a dollop of caramel frosting. Drool!!

So, if it were you, stepping out in white and frill, which would you choose!?

Coffee Mug Cake

2012-03-30T19:57:00.001-07:00

This coffee mug cake was made special for a surprise party. Excitingly, this was my first attempt at a topsy turvy cake. It was for my friend's birthday. One of our favorite things to do is get coffee, kick back, and relax. She is a super fun lady with lots of spunk in her style. I thought the green and pink matched her perfectly. The coffee mug is full of cake, and chocolate ganache, then topped with real home made whip cream. Yum!! It was so delicious and, best yet, made her cry! Success!

Ba Gok Says the Snowboarding Chicken

2012-03-27T13:12:00.000-07:00

Ah, the chicken snowboarding cake!! During that whole swine

flu thing a couple of years ago, my dear friend's little sister got a dose of it. Sadly she had to miss

Halloween. She was pretty bummed about not being able to wear her chicken suit. So what do you do in Michigan when that happens?

You save it for snow to ski in, of course!

So logically, when they needed a birthday cake shortly after, they requested one to remember that day by. Super fun and a pleasure to make.

Each figure is based on a family and their skiing outfit.

The skis, poles, and snowboards are all made of melted dark chocolate. Um, yum!? The pine trees are made of butter cream frosting using a special tip. The whole thing is covered in fondant as well as the figures being sculpted from it.

Baby Butt Cakes

2012-03-27T08:30:00.003-07:00

These are the cutest baby shower cake ever!!! This was the very first time I made fondant, yes from scratch. It was so humid that day, the fondant was awful to work with. I almost threw in the towel right there. Thank God for YouTube and instructional videos. After researching the subject more, I figured out what happened.

This is my second attempt at the cutest baby butt ever, made into a cake, at least. I made it for a friend. She loved it! Although no one wanted to cut it because it was so darn cute!

Winter Wedding Cake

2012-03-26T17:00:00.001-07:00

A wedding cake has got to be one of the coolest things to make. It is such a special feeling, to be a part of some one's magical day. When I make them I feel hugely responsible for going beyond what the couple expects. I want to take their breathe away when they see it for the firs time. Or laugh, depending on what kind of wedding it is. Each bride is different. That is why it is imperative to get to know them and their wants. To hear their dreams and mold it into cake!

This winter wedding was very elegant. Their were tall feathers and sparkling branches beautiful vases for the center pieces. The blushing bride even wore gorgeous white feathered earrings. It was all very dreamy, and romantic, yet classy at the same time. I wanted that feeling of being in love and this sort of blurred- around- the- edges- dream feel into the cake. The couple asked for something to reflect the decor of a white, nature inspired, winter feathery wonderland.

Thrilled, my brain started on the project. The first thing I thought of was to make cake pop doves or some kind of bird dipped in white chocolate. . Also, to space out the cakes for space to put real feathers. It would be covered in fondant so they wouldn't stick. Plus to wrap it all together a climbing branch. The snowflakes are also made of melted white chocolate. So, what do you think? It was such an honor to make and a ton of fun as well. Wedding cakes are the best!

My First Fondant Fairy Cake

2012-03-24T21:29:00.002-07:00

Welcome to my blog on cake designing. I have always loved baking and started with cookies and brownies. When my husband and I bought our first house, we were the first of our friends to do so. My all time favorite thing to do would be to spoil our friends with some yummy, best- ever butterscotch oatmeal cookies or my famous brownies. I had a certain friend that would just pop over, like nearly everyday, just to see if I had some made. Then when my boys were born, birthday cakes were naturally next step. With my background in art and sculpting, and the fact that I hated cake, I figured if they were going to have a cake, at least I was going to be able to eat it. After trying about every cake in our county, the only way I could get that would be to make it myself. I also figured the best way to cure a cake would be homemade buttercream frosting then and stuffing said cake full of dark chocolate ganache and fresh strawberries. Guess what? I was right!

There seemed to be a huge need for me to do a blog specifically on my cakes. You may or may not know that I have another blog, Holy Fire, Cake Girl!, which focuses more on my life as a firefighters' wife and being a mom. My creative arty farty self was feeling left out. I am so excited to have a place all organized! Creating a place to put all of my pictures and designs in one place, will hopefully make it easier to find my work and inspire others.

This cake I made for a little girls birthday. It was one of my first experiments with fondant. Plus maybe my fourth cake all together. Not too shabby, I think.

When I first started making cakes it was only for my friends and family. This was also the first time I used rice crispy treats as building material. I remember how nervous I was! My cakes designs are sort of revealed as I go, so you never know what you are gonna get in the end. Well, this time, I was so excited with the final results of this little girls' cake, I completely forgot to tell my dear friend that the mushroom was made of the rice crispy treats. So, of course, when she went to cut into it, she started with the mushroom cap. To her horror, the cap was super hard to cut into and then something that seemed like saw dust started to fly out at her! She about lost it, laughing, when she realized what it was! Therefore, now I always make it a point to write down things like this, or how many dowels I used, so I can inform my client. This cake reminds me of spring, along with the story behind it, makes it one of my favorites to this day. I hope it puts a smile on your face too!

Happy Spring Everyone!!!!
