A Farewell to All of My Readers

I began "Cake Mom" on January 3, 2010 as a way to chronicle my trials and tribulations as a cake decorator. Over time, the blog turned into a product review and giveaway blog. This was, I admit, a whole lot of fun. It is also a whole lot of work. To be honest, blogging would take me at least 2 hours a day. I work full time, love to work out, still decorate cakes, and have a family. Somehow, I was able to balance it all. Recently, however, I decided to go back to school so that I could advance my career.

I know that getting a second Master's Degree is going to be very time consuming and something has to give. After much consideration, I decided that letting go of this blog was the only option that really made sense. So, I am signing off to pursue bigger and better things in life. I may be back some day, but in case I am not I wanted to thank each and every one of my loyal readers who have stuck with me and read Cake Mom through the years.

The best part of Mother's Day is spending some quality time with my children. My daughter is 9 and, although I know it won't last, she wants to be "just like mom". She got the same hairstyle as mine, she sometimes likes to color coordinate with my outfits, and she loves it when I do our nails. My son, on the other hand, likes to complain when I do our nails because he can't stand the toxic scent of the nail products - and I can't blame him!

When Bella was younger, I did use Piggy Paint products on her. The line of nail products was designed for young girls and they are completely non-toxic, are kid-friendly, and virtually odorless. I was always happy with the quality of the Piggy Paint products (and even used the polish myself at times) so I was excited to hear that Piggy Paint has introduced a line of products for adults!

Review: My daughter has been very upset that I am ending this blog, so it was special to her to have the opportunity to work with me on one last review. Fitting for Mother's Day weekend, we took to the challenge of giving ourselves manicures and pedicures with some Piggy Paint and SOPHi products were were sent.

The Remover Gel was odor-free, which made me very happy since I truly cannot stand the smell of nail polish remover. I quickly realized that it only works with the SOPHi products though. I was unable to remove the nail polish I already had on my nails, but when I tested it later with the SOPHi products, it did a nice job of removing it from my nails.

My nails are quite damaged from no routinely using a clear coat underneath my colored polish, so I was happy to see the primer. It applied smoothly and dried really quick so I could move on to painting my nails. I absolutely love the super bright pink color of the SOPHi polish that they sent me. It is the perfect shade for summer! Two coats were necessary and then I topped with the seal. My daughter loved the color so much, we had matching manicures. I also painted our toes with the Piggy Paint colors. These were also bright, with a hint of shimmer and the polish was easy to apply.

Unfortunately, the SOPHi polish did not hold up very well. By the end of the day, both of our manicures had chips on almost every nail. I also noticed in the sunlight, that the color appeared streaky. It was a shame because I really do love the color! The Piggy Paint seemed to hold up a bit better. I still do appreciate the non-toxicity of these products. The SOPHi line would still be ideal for someone who paints their nails on a daily basis. I tend to paint mine every 3 days, so I need a polish that is going to last a little longer.

3. Gas....need I say more? Some treats leave everyone in the house having to deal with serious gas problems but these gave my dogs no problem at all. Our noses say, "thank you"!

I could not be happier with these high quality treats and if my dogs could talk, I would bet they would agree!

Banana Streusel Muffins

Ingredients
1-1/4 cups flour
1 Tbsp. baking powder
1/8 tsp. salt
1 egg
1/2 cup fat-free milk
1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
3 Tbsp. oil
1-1/2 cups Great Grains Banana Nut Crunch cereal
1 cup finely chopped bananas
1/2 cup Post Selects Banana Nut Crunch Cereal, lightly crushed
1 Tbsp. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. oil

Directions
Mix flour, baking powder and salt in large bowl.

Beat egg in small bowl; stir in milk, 1/3 cup brown sugar and 3 Tbsp. oil.

Add to flour mixture; stir just until moistened. (Batter will be lumpy.)

Stir in 1-1/2 cups cereal and banana.

Spoon batter into paper-lined muffin pan or muffin pan which has been sprayed with cooking spray, filling each cup 2/3 full.

Mix 1/2 cup cereal, 1 Tbsp. brown sugar and cinnamon.

Drizzle with 1 tsp. oil; stir until crumbly. Sprinkle evenly over muffins.

Bake at 400°F for 20 minutes or until lightly browned. Serve warm.

Over the past several years, my blog turned into a product review and giveaway theme which, I must admit, has been a lot of fun. However, my life as a blogger has run its course and it is time to direct my attention elsewhere. I will still be around for the next several weeks to a month to wrap up some reviews and giveaways but I wanted my loyal readers to know why the posts are becoming less frequent.

Ice Chips Candy was featured on the ABC TV Show Shark Tank and caused a FRENZY with the sharks. This ALL NATURAL candy was developed when Charlotte Clary and Bev Vines-haines wanted to make a great tasting candy for thier 41 grandchildren (!!!) that their diabetic friends could enjoy as well. They knew Xylitol (natural sugar) was great for teeth and diabetics could enjoy it. They had tried different candies but could not find one with the zing and the burst of flavors they wanted. Something they could say was " Grannie Approved!" Ice Chips Candy® was born. Everyone they knew wanted the candy,begged to buy the candy and told their friends about the candy.

It wasn’t till later they read they couldn't make a hard Xylitol candy. But that didn't mean a lot to the grannies, by then they had already created one! One flavor followed another. It is healthy, safe for diabetics and the packaging was attractive.

I was not sure what to expect with these candies but I will that I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed them. The look like, well, ice chips! They are hard, yet chewable at the same time and they have quite a bit of flavor. They really do the trick when I need a little something sweet, when my mouth is dry, or I just feel the urge to chew on something but am not hungry. I don't like gum, so these are a great alternative for constantly reaching for sugary candies. I love that they come in a hard tin so I can easily slide a flavor in my purse. My kids love them as much as I do and I am thrilled that these candies do not do damage to their teeth!

Ice Chips Candy are available in the following flavors:

Berry Mix: Tart, tangy, and sweet; this flavor was my absolute favorite. They were so delicious and I had a hard time believing that there was no sugar in these babies!

Peppermint: I enjoy a mint after eating so these were great to have on hand. They are easily as tasty as any other mint that I would suck on, but sugar-free!

Licorice: You definitely have to be a black licorice lover to enjoy these ones - which I am not. If you are, you would probably love the bold flavor.

Cinnamon: I am also not a huge fan of cinnamon candies; however, my husband is and thoroughly enjoyed the heat in this variety.

Lemon: These are very delicious and really remind me of a high-quality sweetened lemonade. This is perfect if I feel the need for a refreshing candy!

Root Beer Float: My daughter loves Root Beer so I was a little surprised that she did not enjoy these. However, I thought the taste was spot on!

I am training for a 10 mile obstacle course this fall so I have been mixing up running, cardio, and strength training to get my body in shape. Review: You can follow the sizing guide to find the fit that is right for you. It always takes me a little while to get used to compression clothes which, by design, are meant to be a tight fit. This was certainly the case for the sleeves. The actual sleeves fit fine, but it was hard to get used to the pressure that was caused by the non-slip strips at the top of the sleeve which help keep the sleeves from sliding while you are exercising. I wish that there was a little less pressure here as it did get very uncomfortable at times. I definitely did purchase the correct size according to the chart, but almost wonder if the next size up would have been a more comfortable fit. The fabric itself was quite breathable and I did find that I had less elbow pain when I did use the sleeves.

I definitely prefer a high quality chocolate over commercially popular brands so these truffles were a real treat! I can always tell when chocolates are of high quality because one small serving tends to satisfy my cravings. This was certainly the case with these! What I really loved about these truffles is that the taste transformed as you were eating them so I could thoroughly enjoy the entire chocolate even beyond the initial burst of flavor. I don't typically like the bitterness of dark chocolate; however, the bitter flavor was nicely complimented by the sweet fillings and the saltiness. The inside of the truffle was perfectly soft, but not gooey. I must say that I enjoyed both flavors equally...so much so that I have hidden these gems from the family. Hey, a gal has to do what a gal has to do!
