A Different (and Muddy) Direction for cake weather

I started cake weather after grad school knowing I needed to try something new. I wasn't sure what direction to take but knew any step was better than none. It's been nearly a decade.

In those bumbling years, life has gifted me perspective I didn't possess in my early thirties. I've become a mother. I've observed people around me change or, worse, barely change at all. I've watched older loved ones get sick, frail and pass. I sensed the hushed, bitter regret they harbored. Life is humbling, achingly beautiful, and short.

I feel so fortunate that ceramics entered my life in 2022. As a child denied her love of art, holding my very first fired and glazed vessel was a profound moment. Permanence, effort, change, creativity, love, art, hope, all captured in a wonderfully imperfect, wonky form. I was struck.

I'm coming to terms with the fact a life well lived requires vulnerability, including pursuing things that are not guaranteed. Pottery reminds me that I may spend hours spinning my wheel (fun pun) for seemingly no sensible reason but isn't that what a life fully lived requires?

I will document my ceramics journey and list pieces made by my hand. I'm eager to see and share what's to come as I develop my signature style and philosophize about clay and life.

If there are other potters who can relate to these words, I would love to connect. If you're out there, do leave a comment. Cheers!

Three Little Upgrades For Healthier Teeth and Gums

Taking care of your teeth and gums is the key to a longer and healthier life. Here are three little upgrades I've made to my oral care routine.
More

Your teeth and gums are your life. You need them to eat, drink, smile, talk, live a full life. No matter how vigilant we are about caring for our mouths, wear and tear accumulates as we get older.

I've become a teeth grinder in the last few years. It's known as bruxism and is totally involuntary and occurs mostly while I'm asleep. I've done various exercises and massages to help unclench my jaw muscles but haven't seen improvement. Some have suggested Botox but I'm hesitant to inject anything in my face, especially when doing so does nothing to address the underlying problem. I've been given a mouth guard to wear at night which has helped stop new damage to my teeth.

In hopes of helping with previous damage, I now use a remineralizing toothpaste containing Nano-hydroxyapatite (nano-Ha). Nano-HA is natural and it works by binding to enamel to remineralize teeth. Studies show it works as well as fluoride and even helps with tooth and dentin sensitivity. It was a small switch to make and perfect for anyone looking for a natural toothpaste, whether you have bruxism or not. I noticed a difference with sensitivity relatively quickly after using it on a regular basis.

Another change I've made to my oral care routine is upgrading my flossing routine by switching to a PFAS-free dental floss. We all have heard of forever chemicals but I was genuinely surprised to hear that several dental floss brands coat their floss with PFASs. It's worth noting that there's an adjustment period when switching to natural dental floss. A natural dental floss is often thicker and less smooth compared to traditional floss but going slow while flossing is helpful until you get the hang of things. I consider it a small price to pay to lower the load of unpleasant chemicals in my daily routine.

Scraping your tongue is a no brainer. It takes no time and leaves your mouth feeling fresher. I never go a day without using a tongue scraper. I have upped my frequency and now opt to scrape my tongue before every meal. It allows me to enjoy my meals and savor tastes more deeply.

Your teeth need to last a lifetime. Every decision and action we take to keep our mouths healthy is impactful. A healthy mouth translates not only to a longer life but also better quality of life. How do you keep your teeth clean and gums healthy?

*As always, if you're trying something new with your teeth or feeling discomfort, consult with your dentist or doctor. They can help guide you with your specific questions and concerns.

A Hack for Better Smelling Pits

Many of us have tried every option in the quest for the perfect deodorant — traditional, natural, roll on, sprays, even crystal salt rocks that required endless rubbing immediately — and still found much to be desired. No matter the promise, none work particularly well to control the funk when fighting the tide of heat, humidity and vigorous activity.

Here's a hack to boost the effectiveness of any deodorant. All you need is a few reusable organic cotton wipes and an acid toner. The secret is a good swipe of acid toner under the arm pits right out of the shower, before applying deodorant.

To apply, take a clean wipe, moisten it slightly with a bit of water and then add a generous amount of acid toner. Then, swipe over the area a few times where you apply deodorant. Once dry, you can put on deodorant.

It’s recommended that you start with a test run as acid toner may irritate certain skin types. (If you have skin sensitivities, do check with your dermatologist first.) Trial a little on one pit and wait a couple of days. If there’s no irritation, you can dab the toner more liberally to your pits 2-3 times a week as needed. When choosing your acid toner, any brand will do.

The issue behind persistently smelly pits may not be due to deodorant but bacteria and dirt lurking in our pits. The toner helps remove debris and control bacteria growth in our underarms. I’ve committed to natural deodorant which is notorious for weak odor protection and found this little trick to be helpful regardless of how hot or active I get.

It's both a shock and a relief that something so simple can make such a difference. There's an unexpected bonus too. I've discovered my armpit skin has a more even appearance in addition to being less stinky. Others have reported less ingrown hairs as well. Hope our tip helps your pits too!

Expecting? Congrats! Once the excitement (woo!) is contained, it's time to contend with the reality and logistics of pregnancy. This is the part where your head smay start to spin because there's so much to do and think about. There's also a certain fear and mystique surrounding pregnancy and especially childbirth. Don't worry, we've got you covered.

The best way to deal with the uncertainty is to dive in and learn as much as you can. When you understand what's happening physically and mentally, you're better able to process and anticipate the changes coming.

First, pregnancy and childbirth are an essential and amazing part of the human experience and there's no need to fear. The women who came before us did it and likely with fewer resources and assistance than available to us today. My grandmother shared how she birthed her children at home with no medical intervention. She told me about the experience in a matter-of-fact way, without a hint of uneasiness. I'm inspired by her strength and her story is a reminder that our bodies are absolutely built for this. We can do this!

The first resource I turned to was books. With all the titles you'll likely read, let's start by saying there's no way anyone can retain everything you read. A great approach is to not be overwhelmed, allow information to enter the brain and let what resonates to stick. There is a common thread running through the book list—a focus on natural birth. Whether you plan to birth via c-section or go natural without any drugs, there is helpful information in the books regardless of the route you take. The two main criteria in evaluating whether a book is worth sharing:

how informative the book is. (The goal is to discover nuggets that aren't common knowledge.)

no zero fear-mongering allowed. (Minimizing stress and easing the mind is important during pregnancy.)

So without further ado, here are the favorites:

Expecting Better by Emily Oster: Oster clears up pregnancy misconceptions and brings certain pregnancy restrictions into perspective. This includes mother's age at conception/birth, consumption of caffeine and alcohol and more with an evidence-based approach. *Highly recommended for: those who are nervous and getting serious about trying for a baby.

Ina May's Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin: I read this book before I conceived (well over a year before) and changed my perception of birth as a scary, painful experience. A wonderful guide to getting your mind into gear if you're thinking of starting a family or counting down the days till the little one arrives. *Highly recommended for: everyone, especially those who are nervous about the actual birth.

Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way by Susan McCutcheon: Found this at the library and my childbirth class strongly recommended this ready. There are helpful exercises that'll get your body in great birthing condition. Highlights also include details about the stages of labor and how your partner can make the birthing process better. *Highly recommended for: all mamas.

Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering by Dr. Sarah Buckley: This book was a bit mind-blowing for me. I casually picked it up and was almost certain I wouldn't like it based on the title and cover. The book details the chain reaction of physical and hormonal effects that come with having a natural birth without drugs. No other reading comes close to explaining the process and relationship of how birth plays out in nature and how the volley of hormones affects not only the baby from arrival to adult years but also the well-being of mom and dad. *Highly recommended for: those considering opting out of an epidural.

The Mama Natural Week-by-Week Guide to Pregnancy by Genevieve Howland: A wonderful week-by-week guide on the development of the fetus and changes in the body with a focus on important milestones, healthful recipes, and lots of other helpful recommendations. *Highly recommended for: everyone!

Yes, there are some very popular titles missing from the list and this is by choice. We have only so many weeks before baby arrives and so, I wanted to only include the books that were most beneficial to me. You don't need to buy them, you can check them out from your local library. If you have the space and want a copy of your own, do visit a secondhand store or independent book store. I've had mama friends who passed along copies which I hope to pass along after my little one arrives.

These books are practical reading for all moms, not just new moms. The books are a wonderful resource to start with but I've also found consulting with your doctor or midwife, peppering the seasoned moms in your life with questions, hitting up YouTube and joining forums where you can interact with other moms on the same pregnancy timeline you are (Reddit) to be super handy.

One final comment, every woman will experience pregnancy in her own way. There is no right or wrong way to go about this. There will be inevitably be passages and suggestions that you find disagreeable. That's fine and I encourage you to skip over what doesn't work for you. Do what feels right for you and babe.

How did/do you quell your pregnancy anxieties? What resources did you turn to for more pregnancy information? Did I miss a helpful book? I would love to hear your suggestions, fellow mamas and mamas-to-be!

What a magical time it is to be expectant. The wonders and changes in the body will require tweaks to everyday routines. We've put together a collection of tried-and-true swaps to keep your growing family healthier.

Every body and pregnancy is different so if you're planning to make a change to your lifestyle, always check in with your doctor or midwife first. Many things harmless outside of pregnancy can become questionable once you are and it helps to double check. A big goal of these tips is to minimize exposure to harmful things, like chemicals and stress, to your changing body and your little one. Another goal is to help deal with difficult pregnancy symptoms.

Beauty

For healthy skin, a two-prong approach is important—being thoughtful about what goes in and on the body. Eating whole, healthy, less processed and organic foods works from the inside out. For example, drinking bone and vegetable broth is a wonderful way to get nutrients in to your body when appetite is low and eating plenty of fresh produce helps nourish while providing a myriad of antioxidants and vitamins. Topically, choosing natural products to care for skin is important. Being mindful about products like soap, makeup, lotions and haircare can make for a healthier pregnancy. After all, our skin is the body's largest organ and acts as both barrier and sponge for what we lather on.

Switching to natural soaps formulated with gentle ingredients is an easy move. Choosing artisan bar soap is a wonderful way of minimizing plastic waste without breaking the bank. We offer vegan and goats milk options to help skin look and feel its best. Some find that pregnancy brings itchy skin, choosing soap made with soothing ingredients like chamomile, oatmeal and shea butter can help keep skin happy. Following up with a rich natural moisturizer helps lock in moisture and minimize itchiness and stretch marks as the belly expands. Double check for essential oils in products as some may not be suited for pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Oralcare

Oral care is important at every phase in life, but especially so while pregnant. Seeing your dentist for a cleaning is recommended. Tip: you may need your doctor/midwife to issue a letter clearing dental procedures so check before you get in the dentist's chair.

During pregnancy, gums and taste buds can become more sensitive so taking good care of your mouth is ultra important. We recommend gentle flossing daily. We like to ditch harsh plastic-packaged mouth wash and choose to make a 100% natural mouth rinse with pink himalayan salt and warm water to keep gums and teeth feeling clean. There's no need for measurements—a small spoonful mixed well in a small glass of warm water is all you need.

Some ladies report a lingering sour and metallic taste on the tongue while pregnant. To deal with this common symptom of pregnancy, invest in a tongue scraper to keep the mouth fresh and help when food aversions occur. Scraping the tongue is an ancient ayurvedic health practice that freshens breath and many find it helpful in improving the taste of food. If you're new to scraping, start slow. Don't scrape too far back on the tongue to start. I also personally found mint-flavored toothpastes to taste disagreeable. Our solution is to swap in a natural paste made with baking soda or otherwise containing a 'saltier' flavor rather than mint. Children's toothpaste often come in more palatable flavors like bubble gum.

Clean Home

Another important thing to factor in are cleaning chores. Have loved ones help with the most strenuous tasks. Choose cleaning products made with less harmful ingredients. If you can make a cleaner yourself, that can be helpful as some 'natural' cleaners aren't as harmless as we'd like to believe. (Caveat: do proper reading before mixing and concocting your own cleaner. Some natural ingredients can be harmful when mixed together.) Nix any cleaners that make you feel lightheaded as you clean. If possible, open a window for ventilation and use rubber gloves. Check labels. If you're in a bind, turn to vinegar and baking soda. They are safe enough to eat which settles worries. I clean happier knowing I'm not exposing babe, skin, or lungs to unnecessary harshness.

Everyday Life

Running around town means you'll experience odors that come up on you fast. This is especially true during warmer months. Some women swear by having a fresh lemon to scratch and sniff to fight nausea while out and about. Tart hard candy can also work to distract the olfactory senses.

Some of us enjoy to a cocktail or glass of wine at the end of a long day pre-baby. While pregnant, we need to turn to new methods of unwinding. Meditation, exercise, music, journaling, prenatal yoga or a laugh session with friends are terrific alternatives to decompress and unwind.

Pregnancy has a huge physical component but there's as much to prepare mentally. Anxiety and worrying is normal but arming yourself with information whether it's in the form of books or classes is a wonderful way to prepare for the months to come. How have you adapted to the changes that come with growing your family? Do you have any healthful tips to share?

Scar Tissue - The Benefits of Massage and Release

We all have scar tissue and it can affect us physically and emotionally. Working it out may help keep the body soft.
More

A few years ago, I injured the pinky toe on my left foot. The area swelled, turned red, then black and blue. For weeks, I elevated my foot, kept off of it and iced it until it healed. By all accounts, things looked normal but something felt different when I walked or touched the area. The toe area didn't moved the way it used to and it even looked a little off compared to my right foot.

This struck me so I read up on scar tissue and how old injuries can essentially stiffen the body. At any given moment, our bodies have a collection of scars and old injuries that offer a visual and physical reminder of past traumas. Most of us have experienced the pain and healing of cuts, sprains, childhood scrapes. The tears may be gone but what's left is scar tissue.

Scar tissue can be minor or it can go deep under our skin and right to our joints. I found fascinating articles about how old injuries float around the body long after an accident. Left unaddressed, the scar tissue can envelop the injured area making it hard to perform everyday tasks. An old twisted ankle or sprained knee could still affect the way we walk, sit and sleep many years later. The forming of scar tissue is a bodily response designed to protect injuries. After time, many of us simply accept the scar tissue but there are different therapies to help it dissipate. Some may have concerns and avoid dealing with it as scar tissue can bring unpleasant feelings of discomfort (emotional and physical).

Given how important to flow of chi is to our health, releasing scar tissue is worth considering. When we're in balance, our chi flows through the body. It's no surprise when we feel unwell, the entire body can feel out of whack. This poses the question of whether our bodies can experience a blockage in energy flow when we carry scar tissue that brings us pain or prevents natural, fluid movement in our bodies.

A healthy body like many things in nature has give. Working scar tissue out and softening the parts of yourself that have been hurt can bring a certain relief. This applies to more than just superficial injuries but also internal ones. Massaging and releasing scar tissue can be a metaphor for life. Dealing with the hurt can help prevent us from carrying a pain that's hardened inside of us.

And I did just that. After reading as much as I could and formulating a game plan, I gently massaged my left baby toe for weeks. I started with a couple of minutes daily and worked my way up gradually from there. I felt the blood flowing to the area every time post-massage. It's not 100% as it was before I injured my foot but I now have greater flexibility and mobility in the little left toe.

I recommend doing a deep dive and learning more information about working out old scars. There are certified massage therapists who specialize in this area or you can take a class to learn more about doing this on your own. Should you decide to do so, be sure to check in with your doctor and always follow their given advice. Avoid massaging new injuries as this can negatively affect healing. Be sure to listen to your body, go slow and be gentle. What's your experience with scar tissue?

Hemp is a sustainable, giving plant that's been cultivated by humans for thousands of years. The plant provides us with durable fibers, healthful oils, nutritious seeds and more. From the time of our founding fathers up until the late 1930s, industrial hemp was grown on farms throughout the country. After that, the plant was outlawed alongside marijuana without differentiation and because of those laws—we lost much of our country's heritage of growing and processing hemp.

In 2018, a farm bill was signed to help revive the cultivation of industrial hemp. This is outstanding news as we search for alternatives to plastics and other resource-demanding crops to create everyday essentials. Hemp grows with little human or chemical assistance and can produce a diversity of items including bioplastics, biofuels, food, paper, concrete and textiles.

In fact, hemp makes beautiful high-quality fabrics that can be used to create clothing, aprons, bed sheets, napkins and other linens for the home. It produces fabrics with fewer resources than cotton, wool or bamboo (and paper with fewer resources than wood).

Industrial hemp offers many benefits but an obstacle remains—the perception that hemp and marijuana are the same. Industrial hemp does not contain enough THC (the limit is less than 0.3% as set forth by government) to alter consciousness and is used for different purposes than marijuana. There’s no getting high off of hemp. Its purpose is full of utility, allowing us to produce a prolific amount of useful raw materials with less acreage, water and labor used.

When we think about the pervasiveness of plastics and chemicals in so many household goods, we can't fight the optimism about these recent developments and look forward to creating more offerings made with sustainable hemp. By replacing items produced with unhealthy chemicals and materials with more natural ones, we are not only making a choice that positively impacts the environment but also the health of our loved ones. We've most recently begun using hemp to create durable, organic cheesecloths and coffee filters. We are dipping our toes in the waters and hope you will enjoy using our hemp products as much as we enjoy creating them. Do you use hemp products?

Five Things You Need to Know About Gua Sha Face Massage

Gua sha is offered in beautiful high-end spas but there's no reason you can't practice it at home. A few minutes, several times a week is all you need to give your face a wonderful massage that can be both relaxing and beautifying.

We've put together a guide as well as these 5 helpful tips to answer your biggest face massage questions:

1. The tool should glide effortlessly over skin. If there's any tugging, stop and add extra cream or oil to skin. We recommend using a moisturizer with natural ingredients as the skin readily absorbs much of what we slather on top of it. Shea butter (pictured here) melted between your palms works great, especially during the dry winter months.

2. Lay the tool flat on your face and then tilt it up slightly as you would if you are buttering bread. This is the proper angle at which you should be massaging your face. It should be closer to parallel rather than perpendicular to your face.

3. Use a light hand. The massage is, by design, a relaxing, de-stressing activity. Gentle motions facilitate the releasing of tension. If your face is bright red after a session, it's a sign you should use less pressure. Always take care to go extra light around the eye area as this part of your face is more sensitive.

4. If you feel small bumps or bulges under the skin, they may actually be the knotted-up little muscles of your face. (A reminder to stop furrowing your brow perhaps.) Go over them softly with the tool several times until they loosen up. These little knots are not to be confused with active acne or blemishes in the process of healing, which you should avoid massaging. Instead, wait for them to heal before proceeding with massage.

5. Drink a glass of warm water when you're done. This is actually a wonderful thing to do after any massage to help boost hydration which is an essential part of keeping skin plump and healthy.

If you have any questions, we recommend checking in with your doctor or dermatologist before proceeding. If you've had fillers or other procedures to your face, we strongly urge you to check in with your dermatologist before proceeding.

Gua sha is a low-cost way to practice self care and can help your face look brighter and healthier. It's a practice that is meditative with benefits inside the body and out. How often do you gua sha?

*In September 2019, Hurricane Dorian devastated much of the Bahamas. The eye of storm passed directly over Elbow Cay and sadly, much of the island was leveled. Consider donating to provide aid to survivors and aid the rebuilding of this beautiful place by giving only to reputable sources.

If you're looking for paradise, you'll find it in the spectacular islands of the Bahamas. It's super easy to get to from the states and well worth the trip. We're spotlighting a gorgeous little gem in the Abaco Islands—Elbow Cay.

If you're lucky, you may have a friend who'll fly or boat you in. For everyone else, you'll need to take Albury's Ferry to Elbow Cay from Marsh Harbour. The first thing you'll notice when approaching Elbow Cay is the charming 120-ft Hope Town lighthouse that's still manually operated. If you make the trip to the top, you'll be treated to the best views on the island and see how the island gets its name.

what to expect

Once on the island, locals told us it was impossible to get lost but we did. It took a little time for us city slickers to get our bearings. For one thing, we came in on the last ferry of the day, arriving past dusk. Secondly, there aren't a lot of signs. The only way to figure things out is to simply explore. Even as avid walkers, we found the island long and the sun strong for walking. You'll want a speedier mode of transportation. You can zip around on a bike or go by way of golf cart.

We took a golf cart and it was probably the best thing about being on the island. There's nothing like jumping in with a cold drink, speeding along, feeling the wind in our hair, whizzing by fallen coconuts and wild chickens. Just remember to drive on the opposite side of the road (the left). And like many other Caribbean islands, a honk is a friendly greeting in these parts.

For workaholics who need a break, you now have the perfect excuse to disconnect. Not all cell phone carriers provide service to the island and even at our beautiful hotel, wi-fi was spotty at best. What a treat it was to tuck my phone away for days on end.

what to bring

The best thing to bring is an insulated cup. Virtually everything is brought in by boat, even the water. Yes, the water from the tap is shipped in from a larger island of the Bahamas and is perfect to drink right from the faucet. Local bars and restaurants serve most drinks in plastic cups so bringing your own cup allows you to be green and refuse single-use plastic. You'll also have the added bonus of ice cold drinks on the move. The island allows you to take anything to go, even cocktails and beer. The humidity melts ice in the blink of an eye so an insulated cup will keep drinks fresh wherever you decide to take them.

Because so little food actually comes from the island (aside from locally-caught seafood), expect to pay extra for common foods. Bringing your own snacks, like nuts, granola bars and chips, is a good idea as the selection in shops can be limited and what's available is mostly shelf-stable and not necessarily the healthiest.

Bring a bug spray. Expect a few biting critters if you're sweet, even in cold weather months. A couple of tote bags is always a good idea so you don't have to rely on plastic bags when you shop. Also, there are no ATMs on the island so bring what you need before you come ashore. Most establishments accept credit cards (mainly MasterCard and Visa, occasionally Discover and Amex.)

where to go

The island's village is historic Hope Town. You'll want to stroll the pretty little streets, stop in the shops, cafes and bars and appreciate the beautiful homes in cheerful pastel shades. Wander, stop for a rum punch and you'll meet locals who can trace their roots back to the first settlers and pirates who first made the island home.

Tahiti Beach is a picturesque place to spend the day. At low tide, a generous-sized sand bar reveals itself. It's the perfect place to hang, swim, lay out, snack, play and snorkel until you get your fill of sunshine. Bring a cooler and plenty of reef-safe sunblock.

To eat, choose local. Conch is abundant so get it as often as you can. We loved it in toothsome cakes and fritters as well as in a citrus-marinated salad that's a bit like ceviche. It's the sweetest when you get it fresh.

The sound of the palms swaying, waves gently lapping the shore and the occasional rooster crowing will have you feeling like you're a million miles away from all stress. Enjoy! Before you know it, you'll be planning your next trip back as you watch the lighthouse shrink away on the ferry ride home.

Moving is stressful but there are ways to simplify the process. As an expert mover with a dozen times under my belt, from as short a distance as a quarter mile to cross-country (twice), I've learned a lot by making every imaginable moving mistake. Now I find all my fragile items in perfect condition and know where to be green and save a little green during a move. Here are a few nuggets of my moving wisdom:

Cull and donate.

A mountain of things come into our possession over time and moving is an opportunity to evaluate what's actually useful or meaningful. Ask yourself whether an item's been used in the last year or if you'd replace the item if you lose it. If the answer is no on either count, simply donate, recycle or discard. The best thing you can do when moving is to take only the items you love and use to your new home.

This part of the process is by no means easy—moving is an emotional time, making it difficult to part with possessions. But giving an object a new life is beneficial for all. Moving and storing things you no longer need requires a surprising amount of energy, time, space and money.

Starting the culling process early is important, providing ample time to thoughtfully go through things. The body will ache less come moving day and you won't be left wondering what's in all those boxes once the movers leave.

Minimize single-use plastic packaging and store-bought boxes.

Bubble wrap is useful but when you consider its limited use and the longevity of plastic, it's best to reconsider. Newspaper is a terrific alternative. It's effective, free and compostable. Another idea is using bedding, towels, dishtowels, linens and the like to cushion fragile items.

Avoiding brand new boxes is also environmentally-friendly. Not to The expense of new cardboard boxes can add up. Start saving boxes from deliveries early on. Enlist the help of friends and family to do the same. If you live in an apartment building, ask the super to save you some clean boxes. He is likely to be happy to oblige and the cost is 100% free.

Pack smart.

Most of the burdensome items in a home are difficult to pack. If you're bookworm, you'll find books are too heavy to pack all in a single box. If you fill a box full of clothing, the box can lose its integrity, softening and caving when stacked under other boxes.

In a move, it's best to assume whomever is moving the box will not pay attention to what's written on them. Neither 'fragile' or 'do not stack' will mean much in the haste of moving day so pack boxes in a way that protects what's within. This is best done by mixing things up. Using books to line the sides of boxes gives them extra structure. Clothing and other soft items can be used to fill in the gaps so boxes don't buckle.

Rest and de-stress.

Stress can derail even the best laid plans, so learn to identify stressors and have a plan when stress hits. It helps to plan and assume that everything will take longer than expected. Remind myself that everything will get done. If the body or mind is at its limit, rest. Eating well and getting plenty of rest leading up to the move is also essential. Turn off the guilt and anxiety about not spending every waking moment doing something related to the move as it approaches. Find time for breathing exercises, a walk or a good meal with loved ones.

If you're planning to move in the near future, we hope these tips are helpful. Liberate yourself from things that no longer serve a purpose. Don't be afraid to ask loved ones for help. Don't fall victim to overwork and stress. And finally, a move is the perfect chance to start anew and create memories in a new home. What are your eco-friendly moving tips?

We are all breathing. But there are ways to breathe with intention that can promote wellness of both mind and body. Many of us turn to a variety of ways to keep stress at bay—a variety of which aren't necessarily healthy . This method of stress relief is healthy, free and at your disposal anywhere, anytime.

The technique is called the 4-7-8 method. If you master it and memorize it, you'll be able to find a pleasing calmness in any situation and ultimately help keep body and mind in better health. It's simple to do. Essentially, you breathe in fully through the nose to the count of 4, hold your breathe to the count of 7 and finally exhale deeply through the mouth to the count of 8. You can do this standing or sitting with a straight back and if you can do it with your eyes closed, all the better.

This method helps calm the mind, ease anxiety and promote relaxation. So the next time you have a big presentation, an important interview or difficulty falling asleep, try the exercise. With daily practice, you'll reap even greater calming benefits. As always, if you have any concerns about breathing exercises and your health, we recommend checking in with your doctor.

Is Bamboo A Healthy Alternative to Cotton?

In the quest for sustainable fabrics and textiles for everyday items like clothing, bedding, bath and table linens, some look for an alternative to cotton.

Bamboo is one option. The plant grows quickly, several feet a day in some instances. For those who have planted bamboo as an ornamental in their gardens, they know this first hand. In fact, it's an invasive species here in the states that can push out native vegetation when it grows prolifically and can be difficult to control once its established and well rooted.

So is bamboo a fiber we should be embracing? First, let's consider how bamboo and cotton grows in its natural state. Bamboo is a tall woody grass that grows in the form of round hollow stalks with leaves along its length whereas the cotton plant grows in short bushes which shoot out puffs of soft fibers nestled inside pods. When you examine the two, there is no question which plant naturally yields a material that most resembles fibers used to weave cloth.

And therein lies the rub. In order for bamboo to be processed into textiles, a variety of chemicals and mechanical treatment is required. Bamboo that may have grown organically and free of chemical intervention is a different story than bamboo that's been processed into shirts, towels or any other household item.

The process of turning bamboo stalks into a pliable cloth begins by chipping the bamboo into shards which are soaked in chemicals until a pulp is formed. The pulp is dried in sheets and then broken down once again in order to be spun into fibers which are then used to create fabric. The final processed bamboo product bears virtually no resemblance to the plant that grew from the earth.

Bamboo may grow fast and sound like a healthy alternative to synthetic fibers or even cotton but one should consider the health and environmental effects of transforming this hard and fibrous plant into usable cloth. There is nothing wrong with bamboo the plant itself. It's the process used and it's also worth nothing that most cotton products are made with conventional cotton, which requires a lot of water to cultivate and is often heavily sprayed with pesticides.

Choosing the eco-friendly option when shopping is never easy and requires a lot of research. Doing our best to educate ourselves, sharing that information and then using that knowledge has a positive impact on the planet. If you're searching for a good alternative, please consider buying goods made with organic cotton when given the option. Often what's good for our health is also good for the environment too. To date, I've added organic sheets, pillowcases and reusable makeup wipes to my home. I'm working to add clothing and table napkins in the future.

What are your thoughts on bamboo products? Have you purchased organic cotton products?

"All the good ideas I ever had came to me while I was milking a cow." - Grant Wood

Boredom would come easily to us in our days of youth. The perfect opportunity presented itself during long breaks from school in the gift of less obligations and plenty of time daydreaming while staring out a window. As we get older, we become less open to boredom, believing it a sign of wasted time or perhaps an unwelcome opportunity to look within.

How many of us instinctively reach for the phone when we feel bored, feeling maybe a little lonely, or awkward without something for the hands to do? Everytime I step in an elevator or get on the checkout line, I always notice others instinctively and immediately pulling out phones and tapping away. There's no basking in the dullness of the moment which can serve as a little break for the brain.

There is value in boredom and allowing the brain to slow down and wander. Studies show it helps foster creativity and self-reflection. Boredom has always been a part of life and allows us to contemplate all the minutiae of existence. When was the last time you experienced the physical and mental stillness of boredom?

There are opportunities abound:

Sitting on a train, plane or in traffic

Waiting for an appointment

Doing mundane chores like the dishes or laundry

Walking the dog

All you have to do is give the brain silence and let it do its thing. Just turn off the devices and speakers and allow the brain to explore the nothingness. Delight in the mundane thoughts and feelings that greet you. Boredom may not be easy and, for many, unpleasant at first. We've all grown accustomed to constant stimulation but welcoming boredom can help generate new ideas, break bad habits that come about from being unable to cope with boredom and even help to reset your mental state.

Will you make time to get bored?

I boiled my kettle dry the other night. Unsure if it was salvageable, I headed straight to Google. As I punched my question in, Google gave me its best guesses as to what I could be looking for. Before I had a chance to finish, Google offered up the most dramatic suggestion I've ever encountered. There it was... "how to know if you've ruined your life."

And it made me think — there are enough people who've pondered and searched this question for Google's algorithm to deem it necessary to save me the effort of articulating it.

It's a little funny and a little sad but we've all been there. Life throws curveballs. Mistakes happen. We trip and stumble. If you've veered off course, embarrassed yourself, failed at something, broken a relationship, lost a job or let someone you love down, it's easy to feel like life is over. If you're ever wondering whether you've ruined your life, please know you most definitely did not.

Life can't be ruined. Life is dynamic, full of funny twists and turns. Bad things happen just as good things happen. Life keeps moving on and you can choose to grow or to stagnate. When we make a mistake, spending a little time to figure out what happened and why and logging it in our brain is all we need to do to never repeat the mistake. Know that every action or choice is a brick you lay to build the life you want to live. Every day is a new opportunity to fix the mess.

And if you're wondering about the kettle, it's still in fine working order.

Between TripAdvisor and Travel + Leisure, there's not much we can share that hasn't been expounded upon already. If you're looking for places to stay, visit and eat, we'll leave you to the advice of experts. Instead, our travel guide shares tips and observations to help on how to be an eco-friendly traveller.

All roads lead to Rome, the Eternal City. The city is literally built on ancient ruins, scattered throughout the city for your enjoyment. Old and new come together in the most beautiful and intriguing way. The food, the architecture and the history have something for every traveller. If you're heading over to this charming city, here are a few ways to make your trip more full.

- The local water is 100% drinkable and delicious. To get your fill, you can turn on the tap or look for le fontanelle, like the one pictured above, around the city. They're essentially little fountains that have a constant flow of water. Look for signs by fountains that say acqua potabile as those are safe to drink from. An excellent perk to help stay hydrated after long days of sightseeing.

- Strolls along the winding and hilly streets reveal that Romans don't partake in a big shopping culture like some other European cities. Chain clothing stores were rare which makes shopping at smaller stores or, better yet, taking a break from shopping easier.

- Speaking of chain stores, Starbucks isn't a thing here though coffee is everywhere. In fact, Rome may be the farthest I'd ever been from Starbucks, which was a pleasant surprise. This speaks volumes about the pride Italians have of their coffee. Coffee is to be savored in one spot. It's not an afterthought or a beverage mindlessly imbibed on the go. Every cup of coffee I had was delicious and I personally believe Italy brews the best coffee anywhere.

- Pack a reusable tote. Plastic bags aren't a given when you shop and they cost a few extra cents. The good news is that the plastic bags are generally 100% biodegradable. Some stores offer reusable totes when you're at checkout. was offered a bright, patterned cloth bag with padded straps that I adore and shop with now that I'm home again.

- Small food stores are common. We may be accustomed to supermarkets but Romans tend to do their food shopping at small neighborhood grocers, bursting with fresh produce. In fact, these smaller stores boasted a fresher selection of produce and without the excessive plastic wrapping like the fruits and veggies found at the supermarket.

- At restaurants, it is far more common to eat in rather than take away. Food tastes better when eaten at the table and also helps reduce plastic waste. Portion sizes were also perfect. The Italians have a structured way of ordering (antipasti, primi, secondi, contorni, dolce, oh boy) but don't feel pressure to order every course. Order as you wish and for the hunger level you're sating. This can be a source of stress for those who aren't accustomed to this way of dining but it's your holiday and you should do what makes you happy.

- A local custom in Italy is riposo, the afternoon closing of shops, bars and restaurants. If you plan to explore or rest, stock up on snacks like fruit, nuts or a sandwich. Jet lag and a later dinner time can do a number and make you ravenous.

- Wear comfortable shoes. (Life's too short for bad shoes.) You will be on your feet for much of the day. The city offers so much beauty that can only be accessed from moving around town. The Vatican alone offers over 9 miles of art, one of the biggest collections on the planet.

- Public transportation is super helpful if you're trying to make it across town quickly. They have various unlimited use passes. The unlimited bus and metro day pass was just 7 euro. It's a steal with buses and trains running most hours of the day and well into the night. It lets you jump around town just like a local.

- When traveling over longer distances by bus, train or plane, bring along delicious and healthful food options like bananas, oranges and apples. They travel well and can provide a juicy dose of energy and nourishment.

- The best souvenirs for loved ones aren't plastic knick knacks made in China. The best gifts from travels abroad are the memories! But for those who aren't able to travel with you, local items that are of actual use make great gifts. Italy offers gorgeous goodies like truffle oil, funky pastas, dried local mushrooms, organic olive oil, balsamic vinegar, polenta, spices, soaps, beans, wine, cookies, candy and a handmade Pinocchio toy. One tip before you buy animal and plant food products, do read up on what's ok to bring back before buying.

The trip to Italy was splendid and we hope your visit will be too. These reflections are, of course, based on my last visit. No two trips are identical so I'd love to hear your Rome observations and for those heading to historic Rome, we'd be happy to answer any questions.

Our eyes show us the beauty that surrounds us. They're the first thing we all look at when we meet someone new or greet someone we love. When the rest of the body ages, the eyes still hold its sparkle. Protect and nourish them with a few of these pointers:

Have your eyes examined regularly. An ophthalmologist can catch issues early, track potential areas of concern over the years and ensure your prescription for glasses and contacts are up-to-date.

Wear sunglasses. A pair of sunnies with UV protection protects the eyes as well as the delicate skin in the eye area. This tip is especially important when spending an extended amount of time on water or snow in bright sun.

Let 'em breathe. If you wear contacts daily, clean them well and replace as directed. Also, wear glasses on occasion so the eyes have an opportunity to breathe.

Makeup devotees, avoid wearing makeup too close to the lash line. If eye boogers routinely show up dark, this is likely due to makeup is getting in the eyes. To prevent black eye crud, take care when applying make up, choose products that don't slip and slide, avoid rubbing done up eyes and cleanse makeup well before bed.

Eat eye- and vision-fortifying foods that contain vitamin A, C and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin and essential fatty acids, such as carrots, avocados, sweet potatoes, kale, eggs, sardines, leafy greens and nuts.

Don't stare at screens non-stop. Take eye breaks at work, look into the distance periodically, swap the screen for a book, take in morning sunshine.

Doing right by our eyes will mean better vision as we age. Healthy eyes will remain bright and allow you to see all of life's beauty. How do you keep your eyes healthy?

For perfectly cooked grains, many turn to a rice cooker. This appliance yields flawlessly cooked rice, quinoa, oats, farrow and other tricky grains without drama. Despite this, I'd spent the last few years cooking my grains in a little pot on the stove. Often, the liquid would bubble over and grains would turn out overcooked no matter how carefully I measured ingredients.

In a lapse of judgment after moving, I accepted my mom's old rice cooker. The expensive Japanese brand and impeccably cooked rice put my guard down. After months of perfect grains, it occurred to me to look into its non-stick coating. Turns out the cooking pot is coated with Teflon, which raised a red flag. Teflon is questionable for our health based on reports of its effects on birds when heated as well as what it likely does to our bodies and the environment. If you have time, the lengthy piece, "The Teflon Toxin", is a worthwhile read revealing the polluting effects of this industry.

After that realization, I immediately stopped using the rice cooker and began my search for a healthier option. I weighed purchasing a ceramic electric rice cooker but they're hard to find and expensive. More research yielded the Instant Pot as an option. The cooking device had been on my radar for over a year but the pressure cooker aspect intimidated me (having never used one). When I discovered the pot insert is made of inert stainless steel, I took a leap of faith and ordered one.

I've discovered that the Instant Pot cooks grains just like a rice cooker (simply wash, add water, press cook) and, best of all, it's a multi-tasker. Alton Brown would be proud. I'm in no way affiliated with Instant Pot but my weeks-long search for a safer rice cooker without a non-stick coating led me to the multi-cooker and if you're in the same boat, I highly recommend it.

How do you cook your grains? Do you use a rice cooker?

Shoes should take you where you want to go, not be instruments of torture.
More

How many of us have squeezed our feet into uncomfortable shoes? We've all had a pair that inevitably pinched the toes, provided little support, made walking unsteady, dug into ankles or worse, rubbed until blisters appear. Maybe there's still a pair taunting you in a closet somewhere.

The truth is that it really doesn't matter how good they look, bad shoes do a number on the body. On a short-term basis, wearing uncomfortable shoes can affect posture, create inflammation (a negative response of the body) and lead to issues like corns and nail problems. On a long-term basis, uncomfortable shoes can contort feet, messing with bones and tendons that'll shift permanently out of place which may then lead to pain, arthritis and deformity, requiring surgery or special shoes whose ugliness won't offset even the most beautiful pair of shoes.

The negative effects of bad shoes affects people of every age. I'll never forget that time I saw a friend take off her pumps to reveal bunions (likely a hereditary issue that's worsened by bad shoes) at just 20 years old. It broke my heart a bit to see because bunions are difficult to remedy as the condition is progressive. We use our feet everyday to do things we take for granted. Be kind to your feet -- if you can avoid this problem, do it. No pair of shoes is worth a lifetime of pain.

If you have no choice but to wear uncomfortable footwear, minimize the pain by:

Limiting time in them is a good start. There's zero shame in carrying a comfy pair in your bag to switch into.

Shop smart by trying on new shoes after you've walked and done your thing for a full day. Your feet will be a bit larger than morning from all the activity and this will ensure your shoes will pinch less after a day on your feet.

Stretch out shoes a touch before wearing them out.

Pamper your tootsies when you're home. Exfoliate, massage, moisturize and care for them. Stretch and elevate them daily.

Switch up your shoes regularly to ensure your feet are getting the proper space and support.

Choose sneakers or any supportive shoe when walking long distances.

Avoid cheap shoes. Generally, we get what we pay for. Cheap shoes often lack durable, high quality materials and construction. On the flip side, an expensive price tag doesn't guarantee a pair that'll be good for feet either.

If you're feeling chronic or sharp pain, go to a foot doctor so you can get the problem treated asap. It may be something minor and easily correctable.

Treat your feet right and they'll take you to all the places you want to go and well into old age. At some point, we need to make the right decisions for the health of our bodies and the shoes we wear can affect our quality of life for years to come. There are plenty of shoes that look great and won't mess with your feet. How do you keep your tootsies happy?

Indoor gardening is a godsend for city dwellers. Tending plants brings the outdoors into small apartments to help reduce stress, improve air quality in your home, beautify any space and even produce edible rewards. If you're looking to fill your home with greenery, we've compiled a list of the best places to buy plants in NYC:

The Flower District - A few blocks of small stores along 28th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue offering not just flowers but also tons of lush plants. One shopkeeper informed me they get a lot of inventory early in the week so a Monday or Tuesday visit'll give you the most choices.

Chinatown's Mini Green Row - There are a handful of shops along Grand Street between Allen and Forsyth to satisfy your green thumb. This is where I found my first Pilea Peperomioides after a long search. If you're looking for something specific, bring a picture and ask. I've found the shopkeepers are keen on helping you out

The Sill - Great for newbie plant hoarders. The stores (one's in the LES, the other UWS) are cute and staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Plus, there are informative workshops.

Ikea - Ikea is worth a visit just for the plants. The plants are generally near the end of the store (adjacent to the stock area/cashiers). I found a very pretty Calathea Ornata on an early Saturday afternoon last year. It was the last one on the tray and seeing it there waiting for me felt a bit like winning the lottery. If you're going to the Brooklyn location from downtown Manhattan, the ferry is free on weekends. On weekdays, the ferry costs $5 but Ikea will credit you this fee back when you present your ferry ticket with your purchases at checkout.

Trader Joe's - Walking into their plant selection is a crap shoot but when they have fresh inventory, there's always something healthy, lush and affordable. I got my paddle leaf succulent and a variegated umbrella plant at the Upper West Side location. During the warmer months, this is my top pick for orchids.

Indoor Outdoor Gardener - This store is off the beaten path in Bay Ridge but the owner is seriously knowledgeable and committed to helping your plants thrive. On one visit, a guy walked in with cuttings from his sick plant. She inspected it and gave him advice to nurse the plant back to health. Lots of rare and interesting plants here as well.

Lowe's - You can find a nice variety of healthy plants here and at great prices. Plus there is a clearance area that offers overstock and slightly battered (but still viable) plants at super affordable prices. This is the source of the 4 little plants I'm currently nursing back to health.

Honorable mention for plant shopping goes to PlantShed in the UWS and the Union Square Greenmarket, which is also a great place to find potting soil and compost. Actually, most local greenmarkets in the city have a designated area to drop off food scraps and purchase compost. Top places to snag pots include Marshall's/Home Goods, Urban Outfitters and my personal favorite, Etsy where you can find beautiful, one-of-a-kind pots and planters that are handmade.

Did we miss your favorite plant source here in the city? We'd love to know (and of course, stop in!)

Decoding the Label: Natural vs. Synthetic

We help you decode the clothing label to pick natural fibers that are better for you and the environment.
More

Have you checked a clothing label recently? One thing I've learned is that mysterious synthetic fibers have thoroughly invaded clothing options. In fact, it's laborious to find simple basics, whether it's a hat, underwear, t-shirt or sweater, that's made without some portion of man-made fibers. It's understandable given that artificial textiles are skillfully produced and woven to replicate the look and feel of natural fibers.

Can you guess whether these common fabrics are natural or synthetic?

Acrylic - Synthetic.

Bamboo - Natural but usually processed with harsh chemicals. Not recommended because of its effects on the environment and our health.

Cashmere - Natural, warm, luxurious.

Cotton - Natural, and likely to be the most common natural fabric. Super versatile, breathable, perfect for every season.

Denim - Natural, kind of tricky because this is essentially a form of cotton though most denim is cut with an artificial fiber for stretch.

Elastane - Synthetic.

Fleece - Usually synthetic, though cotton versions are occasionally offered. The cotton version is biodegradable and our preferred option.

Hemp - Natural, an earthy fabric that's durable and sustainable.

Linen - Natural, breathable, lightweight. The perfect summer go-to for shirts and dresses.

Modal - Synthetic.

Nylon - Synthetic.

Polyester - Synthetic.

Rayon - Natural but man-made. Rayon is often treated heavily with chemicals so we don't recommend this fiber for clothing.

Silk - Natural, expensive but offers the benefit of being strong, lightweight and luxurious. Silk helps you stay cool in summer and warm in winter.

Spandex - Synthetic.

Tencel - Natural. The less than natural sounding name led me to take a closer look and I'm happy to say this lightweight fiber is made from fully-biodegradable cellulose found in wood pulp.

Viscose - Synthetic.

Wool - Natural, warm.

Choosing natural fibers is a better choice for your skin and the environment. Skin breathes better with natural fibers on the body. Synthetics are often made with chemicals that have no business being in close contact with our skin. In addition, normal wear and tear breaks down clothing fibers, which can create pollution with every wash. When we choose natural, the lint and threads decompose back into the earth. This isn't the case when we break down artificial fibers. It's no surprise that microplastics in the form of tiny fibers show up in the stomachs of sea creatures even in remote parts of the world and alarmingly, even in the sea salt we use to cook our meals.

The next time you shop, please consider choosing natural and organic materials. Your skin, your wardrobe and our planet deserve better than synthetic.

Are you a fan of natural fibers? What's your secret to finding quality natural clothes?

A tickle in the throat, a faint headache, an unshakeable chill—the classic signs of a coming cold we fear. Even the healthiest succumb to cold and flu season. After all, the immune system works overtime in winter to fend off germs, chilly temperatures and stress.

To stay healthy and fight colds quickly, you need plenty of sleep, hydration with warm liquids (think tea, broth or even plain hot water), loads of fruit and veggies and our special homemade herbal concoction.

In a jar, I keep a blend of:

echinacea, an effective immune system stimulator that prevents and reduces the severity of colds

bee pollen powder, chock full of vitamins, minerals and bioflavonoids to boost immune function

ginger powder, a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent

the tiniest pinch of turmeric powder, an antimicrobial agent that helps fight off viruses and reduce fevers (Do add more turmeric if you enjoy the taste. Personally, I only like just a bit as its flavor can overpower the other herbs.)

The recipe isn't measured. Just add what you like or have on hand and skip what you don't. You can use equal parts of the first three ingredients and adjust as you brew your tonic. You'll figure out what tastes best from there.

Our tip, purchase herbs from a reputable source. I source my ingredients from a local health food store in downtown Manhattan and supplement with what's available at Trader Joe's. You're likely to have a local health store that'll stock these ingredients. If all else fails, Mountain Rose Herbs offers sustainable organic herbs to your door.

To use this special immunity boosting dust, fill a mug with hot filtered water and stir in a spoonful of the mix with a bit of honey and fresh squeezed citrus juice. I make this whenever I feel a cold brewing, through a serious cold and even as a preventative measure. Drink up, bundle up, rest up and you'll be back on your feet in a snap.

Is there another herb we could add? Would love to hear your suggestions!

*If you're not feeling well or have questions about the safety of consuming certain herbs, do see your doctor.

Ginseng's an herb that's been used for ages. Ginseng may be unassuming but it's believed to hold potent health and beauty benefits.
More

Ginseng's an herb popular for its medicinal and beauty benefits. It's a rare, slow growing plant so using ginseng is a true indulgence. Ginseng is an unassuming plant, commonly found growing in shaded wooded areas in the mountains. It's green leaves are unremarkable and the most crucial part of the plant is buried under the ground. The odd shaped roots are where its greatest medicinal benefits lie.

For your health or beauty routine, wild American roots are unrivaled. Wild ginseng is desirable because the root is essentially organic. Truly wild roots are free of harmful chemicals like pesticides and artificial fertilizers. Another reason wild is preferred is the fact that the root is more likely to be packed with more health-giving nutrients and antioxidants. Wild ginseng is hardier as it must fend against the elements which equates to slower growth and development of the various health compounds ginseng lovers seek. They're also environmentally responsible as wild ginseng can only be plucked from the earth for a short season each year and requires diggers to plant its seeds at the time of plucking.

Ginseng's packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. When taken in foods and soups, the root is believed to fight inflammation, boost fertility, enhance brain function, support immune function and improve mood. When used topically in beauty oils and serums, ginseng can help fight the signs of aging, prevent and treat acne as well as tighten and brighten skin. If you have the opportunity, add it to your beauty arsenal to help skin glow.

We spend nearly every waking moment bathed in noise. The ubiquitous din of traffic passing, the chatter of conversations, and music in shops and restaurants is incessant. The constant commotion isn't good. In fact, quiet is a long-neglected component of health. Studies have found that the effects of noise can be lethal because of prolonged noise exposure's taxing effects on the cardiovascular system.

Even when we find respite from physical noise, many overlook peace in the noisiest place of all, our minds. Silencing a busy mind can be hard to do, but the best way is meditation or the act of putting down our devices.

On a side note, silence comes with introspection, which may be uncomfortable initially. Surprising thoughts and emotions may bubble up. The stillness may force you to look inside to places where you need to focus. Note what your mind can't seem to hush and work on those areas.

Finding quiet moments to rest and meditate regularly is beneficial for your health so do your best to make time for it. When was the last time you had a moment of physical and mental quiet?

Have you noticed breads and cereals made with sprouted grains in the market? Perhaps you've seen sprouted seeds, beans and grains in the bulk bins? A quick glance at sprouted foods can be puzzling for sprout newbies. Sprouted foods don't look very different from the unsprouted counterparts but they cost more. So what's the rationale?

Well, sprouted foods are made from seeds or grains that have been allowed to germinate. In the process of converting from seed to plant, the chemistry of the food changes, making various nutrients and minerals more bioavailable and thus more easily absorbed by the body.

Sprouted foods often have more fiber than their unsprouted counterparts as well. Though that may not sound very thrilling, fiber is one of the best things you can put into your body. It's the reason why I'll always prefer a smoothie over a juice and I promise you there will be an in-depth post about this in the near future. Fiber should be a key part of meal-planning—if only everyone understood how important fiber is to good health, there wouldn't be a day where we didn't all sing the praises of fiber!

The funny thing is the act of sprouting and eating foods even minimally has been done for centuries. Many of us think we're discovering something new but like many trends we're embracing for the first time, food sprouting has been practiced and consumed for ages.

So yes, sprouted seeds and grains are wonderful for you. You can buy them at most grocery stores and online or you can sprout rice, legumes and other healthy grains at home. Just be sure to thoroughly cook everything you sprout. Have you tried them yet?

Oils are fantastic in natural beauty routines. Many of us know of argan oil and jojoba oil but there are lesser known oils that are equally versatile and beneficial for skin. We've been using and experimenting with sea buckthorn oil in a variety of ways and we're enamored. This humble oil packs a ton of skin-beautifying punch.

Sea buckthorn is an edible berry from a deciduous plants native to Europe and Asia. It's also commonly known as seaberry or sand thorn. Its berries have a gorgeous, bright orange color. The berries are packed with nutrients and often made into jellies, wines and teas. It's difficult to find sea buckthorn berries fresh here in the states but that's alright, as we prefer to using it topically. As a stand-alone, the oil works well as a super nourishing, all natural healing skin salve. That's because sea buckthorn oil contains a healthy combination of antioxidants, minerals, vitamins and amino acids. When applied to the skin, the oil is used to heal burns, cuts, acne, eczema, dryness and sunburn.

The oil is thick and a deep golden color. When rubbed onto the skin, a slightly yellow/orange color can be seen on lighter toned skin, though it fades quickly. The smell is slightly reminiscent of fish oil when it's in the bottle. Once you warm it up and rub it into your skin, you get an earthy, leafy scent that's a bit like tea. The scent is muted and is quite pleasant.

If you're looking for a bottle of sea buckthorn oil, choose a bottle that's organic, pure and cold processed so you're sure to get maximum skin benefits with every application. Seaberry oil is also great on skin when mixed into balms, salves, creams and lotions. We've developed our own and will be offering it to you soon.

Have you tried sea buckthorn oil?

Microplastics in our Salt

Recent news has emerged detailing how microplastics (super fine particles of plastic) which have broken down from trash that's made its way into our oceans, lakes and eventually our water supply can now be found in a common food seasoning many use daily.

The ocean has several patches of waste floating about and wildlife often mistake plastics for food. Given that living organisms and ecosystems are unquestionably interlinked, it really is no wonder that microplastics in bodies of water are found in seafood such as fish and shellfish. If this wasn't startling enough, contamination by microplastic is now present in sea salt originating from at least eight different countries.

Many experts make the claim that the level of micro plastics present in sea salt is safe for consumption. But who wants to ingest plastic?

May we suggest natural substitute, Himalayan pink salt? Not only will you prevent micro plastics from winding up on your dinner table, you'll also get dozens of naturally occurring minerals and trace elements. This rock salt is available in large pieces or finely ground in most grocery stores and we highly recommend you use it in place of salts you suspect are impure.

The reason this conversation exists is in large part due to our (unnecessary) reliance on polluting plastic. Plastic is unavoidable in modern life but we can all reduce the amount of plastic that enters our homes. This is possible by buying more bulk foods, reusing bags and jars and choosing products that are minimally packaged. Collectively, we all can pitch in to keep plastic out of nature and away from wildlife.

What marks the passage of time better than the arrival of autumn and the skin havoc it wreaks?

In a perfect world, the temperature would drop steadily a few degrees, allowing us the chance to acclimate. Sadly, the reality is weeks of fluctuating temps. One day, a sunny picnic in shorts and a few days later, a sweater and scarf just to walk the dog. While it's easy to shed or put on layers, dealing with skin issues like uncomfortable dryness and, for those with eczema, flareups isn't so simple.

For serious issues, we recommend calling on a doctor or dermatologist. When facing minor issues, we have a few suggestions to help keep skin happy.

Stress less. Stress leads to an inflammatory response in the body. This can lead to sleeplessness and compromise immune function, both of which give skin extra challenges to be healthy.

Get serious sleep. Get into a nightly routine of shutting off screens and making your bedroom dark and cozy. Getting a full night's rest helps the body heal and restore itself. Rest isn't idleness, it is a great investment of time.

Work to heal a leaky gut. Some experts point to a leaky gut as a cause of skin issues like eczema. A diet of whole, real foods can help with its effects. When the weather is cool, enjoy warm beverages and soups. If you have dry patches or eczema, nettle tea and bone broth are particularly splendid for skin.

Be wary of oil-stripping bath and beauty products. Our body's natural oils help keep skin plump and healthy. Washing skin harshly will not only make skin even more dry but could trigger the skin to go into overdrive to produce more oils, throwing skin out of balance. Instead, try a gentle or natural soap and avoid antibacterial soaps as they tend to remove the healthy bacteria that naturally occurs on your skin.

Bathe less. This can be challenging for clean freaks but hear us out. Every hot shower or bath strips the skin of oils. Instead of two daily showers, try scaling back to one. Another option is to spend less time in the shower. Also, wash with water that isn't too hot as that can be stripping on the skin as well.

Moisturize immediately after bathing. We're talking within minutes of exiting the shower while skin is still damp. Generously slather lotion or oil that has nourishing, natural ingredients to help lock in moisture.

How do you keep skin happy once the cool weather kicks in?
