The Calgary Spartans Club is requires to send 3 persons minimum to this clinic.

“In order to run a provincial level meet, it takes in excess of 60 officials. Calgary has only about 20! Yes, volunteers may help, but the chiefs and referees must really know how to conduct an event in order to make sure that all athletes have a fair competition, and we need approximately 25 of these! As a result, if Calgary wants to hold a well run provincial meet, we have to import officials from Edmonton or elsewhere.

The Calgary Track and Field Clubs must have new trained officials or we will quickly lose our ability to hold fair competitions in Calgary. Volunteers are not sufficient. For example, a volunteer cannot come out and know how to operate photo-timing equipment, fire a gun to start a 100m sprint, or ensure the equipment is properly set up for a pole vault competition.

As a start to remedy this situation, the Calgary Track and Field Council is sponsoring a level 1 officials clinic. Anybody who desires to see Calgary continue to hold local, provincial, and national meets this coming year and in the future is encouraged to attend as a start to becoming a qualified official. Current officials are more than willing to new officials in order so that we may continue to see our sport grow and flourish in the future.” Ian Gordon, Officials Representative

2011 Alberta Provincial Cross Country Championships

Spartans bring home two Provincial Championship Titles this Saturday at the 2011 Alberta Provincial Cross Country Championships which took place at GoldStick Park in Edmonton.

As well as claiming two Provincial Championship titles in the Midget Boys and Youth Boys races we also had two Silver Medalists in the Youth Girls and Youth Boys Race.

Congratulations to all the following Spartans Athletes who competed this weekend.

2011 ASAA Provincial Cross Country Results

This past weekend the Alberta High Schools Provincial Cross Country Championships took place with 6 Spartans representing their High Schools.

In the Intermediate boys race it was "déjà vu" again for our Spartan Athletes (Michael Quick and Troy Groenewegen) who once again battled it out to a one-two finish again bringing home the Gold and Silver for their respective High Schools!

2011 Alberta High School Regional Cross Country Championships

Calgary Spartan Athletes run very well for their respective High Schools at this year’s 2011 Alberta High School Regional Cross Country Championships which served as the qualifier for the Alberta High School Cross Country Provincial Championships.

The 2011 ASAA Provincial Cross Country Championships will take place on October 15, 2011 in Elkwater, Alberta. All 7 of the Calgary Spartan athletes have qualified for the 2011 Alberta High School Provincial Championships for their respective high schools!

5 of out of the 7 Calgary Spartans Athletes participating made the podium!: 3 Gold Medals 2 Silver Medals.

Aviva Grant and Canadian Nationals

Calgary Track Council just submitted a grant proposal to AVIVA for the Canadian Championships to promote the Run, Jump Throw program to create interest in the sports Festival component of the 2012 Canadian Championships. It is a voting promotion so what is needed now is for everyone in our track community to reach out to all their friends and get them to vote for our program / idea. The voting will start on October 3rd and everyone can vote once a day for the duration of the first Round October 19th. You do not need to be in track to vote so please get all your friends involved. This funding will help out immensely in putting on the Canadian Championships which this year are the Olympic and Para-Olympic Trials. A minute a day will help a lot.

Athlete Development Group Training Schedule

Foothills and Glenmore Athletic Parks Information Sessions

Sheep River Road Race 2011

September 5, 2011 the sound of 900 feet pounding the pavement has been heard around town as the 33th annual Sheep River Road Race was ran. Runners from all over Alberta hit the paths along the river for one of the most picturesque races of the running season.

Michael Quick wins his age-group for the 5km in 17.24 and second fastest overall.�

The Calgary Track Council sincerely would appreciate some help as Dale will be unable to do this lifting all by himself. If you could schedule a day off from work and come out to help him that would be fantastic. Lunch will be provided.

The athletes put it all on the line and brought out their best with several Personal Bests, 6 Bronzes, 6 Silvers and 10 Provincial Championship Gold Medals! On route to a great Provincial Championships our athletes have also placed themselves on top of the Alberta Indoor Rankings with 5 athletes now ranked #1 in the Province of Alberta in 8 events!

2010 Athletics Alberta Midget Boy Cross Country Athlete of the year

Congrats are in order for Mike Quick as he has just been named the 2010 Midget Boys Athletics Alberta Cross Country Male Athlete of the Year!! Michael Quick is also one of the final 3 nominees in the running for the 2010 Athletics Alberta Midget Boys Track and Field Male Athlete of the Year Award!

Mike is the only one out of the 2 other nominees bidding for this title to set a new outdoor provincial record.

Mike Quick won the 2010 Western Canadian Championships Title in the Midget Boys 1200m race and while doing this he set a new Midget Boys 1200m Alberta Provincial Record! Michael Quick capped off his amazing 2010 outdoor season ranked #1 in the Province for Midget Boys in both the 1200m & 800m events!

I think Mike's chances of also winning the Track and Field Athlete of the year Award is looking really strong...more to come in January, 2011 stay tune!
