Brittany and Jaylen met while performing in a musical so that is why they chose the Singing in the Rain theme for their engagement photos. Look how they incorporated their images into their Save the Date Invitations. We love this!

Brittany and Jaylen’s engagement shoot was inspired by their shared love of the Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynold’s classic movie  “Singing in the Rain”. Photographed on the streets of downtown Los Angeles, Allie and I paid attention to the scenery to ensure that each set-up matched the vibe of the film (old LA, urbanscapes, etc). Brittany and Jaylen are a creative powerhouse (they are both actors, writers and performers) and the most energetic human beings you will ever meet, so there was no shortage of energy or a lack of willingness on their side. They completely trusted us which is so important to our process. Some interesting notes: Brittany bought lots of Arrowhead big water jugs and that is how we transformed a cloudless, hot LA afternoon into a rainy day. They rented and bought their costumes – something we always suggest when shooting a more stylized engagement. Finally, we were granted special unprecedented access to the inside of the Los Angeles Theatre. How?

As we were shooting in the alley, the side door opened and a wonderful English gentleman appeared from the depths. He seemed intrigued by what we were doing so we started talking. After a bit, I asked him if we could go inside and photograph, thinking there was no way he would say yes. And what did he say: yes! He gave us a few minutes to shoot and that was it. I think we must have only been in there for 15 minutes. This is such a great example of being ready when opportunity knocks. Allie always makes fun of me for carrying so much gear. Who brings a softbox and extra strobes to the outdoor portion of the shoot? This guy! Always, because you never know.  Thank goodness as the interior was very dark. If I didn’t bring that extra gear, this amazing opportunity would have disappeared. It is also a great illustration of just asking – it is crazy what people will let you do when you tell them that two people are getting married!

Sara and Lee were married just outside of New York City at the Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle. Their wedding was so special for us on so many levels: Lee was referred to us by our clients, Melissa and David, whose wedding we photographed one week prior in Riviera Maya, Mexico. It was so surreal to see Melissa and David again as one-week newlyweds, at another wedding, in another country (see photo at the bottom of the post). Second, and most important, Sara and Lee trusted us immensely by hiring us outside of their orthodox Jewish community. From Lee:

Simply put, Brian and Allison Callaway of Callaway Gable are the best there is. For our wedding Sara and I wanted something special – and decided to look outside the normal cast of photographers that typically get hired for the orthodox Jewish weddings in New York. We took a risk going with Brian and Allie – would they capture all of the nuanced traditions and ceremonies during our wedding? After receiving our photos, it was evident that our risk paid off…big time. Allie and Brian’s fresh perspective and unparalleled skill yielded photos unlike ones we had ever seen before. They not only allow us to remember our wedding, but more importantly, allow us to relive it! I will say – Be careful, if you go with Callaway Gable – just be prepared to answer the question – “who was your photographer?” about a thousand times.

Finally, If Lee looks a bit familiar, you may have seen him on the NBC hit show, The Apprentice. Chosen from among one million applicants to vie for a position at the Trump Organization, Mr. Bienstock became one of the final two candidates and the youngest finalist in the history of the series. Stay tuned for Lee’s brother’s wedding, which we just photographed a few weeks ago in Brooklyn.

Michal and Solomon’s engagement was shot on the streets of New York in the Meat Packing District in mid-town Manhattan. The first batch of images were taken in The Highline, a public park built on an historic freight rail line elevated above the streets. This section of the park is referred to the Diller-von Furstenberg Sundeck as it was created by a special donation from Diane von Furstenberg (whose store is just below) and Barry Diller. This may just be the coolest and most photogenic urban park I have ever seen. The three photos which end with Solomon jumping were taken under the Standard Hotel NYC, which actually spans over the park. We ended the day with a quick jaunt crosstown to Grand Central Terminal for a few final images before Allison and I had to hop back in a cab and sadly, catch our plane back to Los Angeles. Michal and Solomon were married this past weekend in a traditional Jewish Orthodox ceremony and reception at El Caribe Country Club in Brooklyn, New York. This beautiful portrait of Michal was taken by Allison just before her first look with Solomon. The first look at an Orthodox wedding is always extra special as they have not seen each other for seven days prior to the wedding.
