When I first heard that Davidoff was purchasing Camacho Cigars, this cigar was the first thing that popped into my head.  Davidoff and Camacho cigars had always occupied opposite ends of the spectrum.  Everything Camacho put out under the brand name Camacho was a powerhouse cigar.  All of their lines were robust, full-bodied smokes that tried to kick you in the gut.  I know that they have milder offerings under different banners like Baccarat and La Fontana, but anything labeled Camacho was going to be a monster.  SO when the announcement of the purchase became public, I immediately though to myself, “What would happen if Davidoff and Camacho got together and had a baby?”  I said to myself a Camacho with a Connecticut wrapper and Dominican tobacco in the filler.  Can you imagine!  A Camacho with that makeup?  And then a short while later we here about the Camacho Connecticut which is exactly the cigar I predicted.  Now I don’t pretend that I had any great insight or any special talent in predicting what’s next in the cigar industry.  Truth is a lot of people I have talked with had the exact same thoughts I did.  It was easy to see this coming.  SO I want to know, what exactly does a Camacho that uses a Connecticut Shade wrapper and Dominican tobacco taste like.

At the start, this cigar is a lot like its other Camacho brothers and sisters.  The first few draws are full and spicy with black pepper and a slightly acrid dry wood flavor.  It doesn’t take long to settle down.  The Ecuadorian wrapper brings what you’d expect to the party.  Creamy notes complimented by some coffee.  It is nicely balanced by a bit of Honduran spiciness from the binder and filler.  I think the Dominican tobacco kind of gets lost in the blend.  Perhaps its function is just to help tone down some of the power of the Honduran tobacco.  The result is a nicely balanced cigar with a medium bodied profile and just a touch of spice to keep it interesting.  I was pleasantly surprised by this cigar and put it up there with Oliva’s Nicaraguan Connecticut Reserve as a good slightly more robust Connecticut offering.

The other day we were digging through the archives here at Camacho and we stumbled on this piece of history. This brochure is from the days when Simon Camacho, the Cuban originator of the brand, still owned and marketed the Camacho name. Simon was exiled from Cuba in 1961 and soon thereafter set up shop in Miami to continue making the Nicaraguan version of the Cuba’s famed Camacho brand. >>Click here to view the brochure

With our Corona Cigar Contest coming to a close, it was about time to get another one in motion. This time, we were fortunate enough to receive a free box of Room 101 Cigars courtesy of Camacho and Room 101. The box up for grabs is the 11/18 size which goes by the 702 area code.

Appearance & Construction: This cigar is dark looking cigar sporting a red and gold band and a secondary band that lets me know this is Maduro, as if I couldn’t tell from the dark brown wrapper. The wrapper is kind of dull looking but is smooth to the touch. The cigar has a little give to it when pinched gently between my fingers and the roll of this cigar is great. No visible defects with this cigar.

Smoking Characteristics: Draw is a bit light on this cigar but I have come to expect that from Camacho Cigars. The burn is a little wavy but always corrected itself. The body of this cigar is just shy of full for me but they have been sitting in my humidor since January 2009.

Flavors: The cigar is a nice rich toasty combination of wood, a cocoa sweetness, coffee and a bit of spice. There is also some saltiness to the cigar which goes well with the sweetness of this cigar. The flavors remain very consistent throughout the cigar and don’t change much.

Final Thoughts: I am kind of pissed at myself for not smoking these cigars sooner. I bought a box of Camacho Triple Maduro’s, which are much more expensive and I find the SLR Maduro to be similar. Of course it does not have the complexity or richness that the Triple Maduro’s have, but the enjoyment for the dollar is much more favorable for the SLR Maduro. Overall this was an enjoyable cigar. The flavors were great and the cigar did not turn harsh, even when smoked down to the nub.

Buy Again: Yes
Enjoyablity: Medium to High
Similar Cigars: As stated above a Camacho Triple Maduro with less complexity and richness
