History -
The Central Coast of California's history is full of enterprising adventurers, like William Leffingwell, Sr. and his family. The Leffingwells arrived on the California Coast in 1858, purchased ranch land and established themselves as a formidable business family. They established a sawmill and small blacksmith shop. Seeing the need for a landing for cargo ships, William Sr. with his son, William Jr., built a pier on their property at the mouth of Leffingwell Creek. The beach still bears the family’s name today.

The Leffingwells acquired much of the public domain lands between Rancho Santa Rosa and Rancho San Simeon, now part of the Hearst Ranch and estate where W.R. Hearst chose to build his "Castle."
