- My name is Nichol and art is part of every bit of me. I know it's cliche (and even more cliche to mention the cliche) but I was pretty much born with a pencil in my hand. Unfortunately, I didn't have the discipline to practice properly as a youngster, but I'm trying to make up for that now. I enjoy many mediums, most of all ones that are unbelievably messy.

- My typical day consists of waking up, playing slave to my cat (feeding/cleaning), then playing slave to my community (I'm a manager at a nearby cozy coffee shop). If I'm lucky, I have time somewhere in between to wind down and work out my creativity into a project or two.

- Some of my favorite movies are Secret of NYHM, Let the Right One In, My Neighbor Totoro, Wall-E, and Muppet Treasure Island. My favorite tv shows are DeadWood and Mystery Science Theater 3000(bordering on obsession). I enjoy books too! The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud and The Ring trilogy by Koji Suzuki. Also, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles by Haruki Murukami.

- So far, out of all of the t-shirt designs I've created, I believe that http://cameesa.com/support/design/344/im-still-here is probably my most true-to-myself entry. One of the things I enjoy the most is creating a dark or emotional situation with 'cute' characters. I'm not sure why, but I enjoy the irony or even sarcasm that can sometimes be caused by using such a tactic.

- I'm fairly new to the t-shirt world, so previously all I did were art projects pertaining to other things I love. Clay, acrylics, pencil, paper mache. I love most mediums. I intend to try spraypainting in the future.

- I'm most proud of any new technique I master, so that is constantly changing. Recently I've been dropping the ball on this. I need to actively learn and practice more!

- My advice to my fellow Cameesians is keep doing what you love and make sure that you're always challenging yourself. Also, please remind me to do this too!

I'm a 24 year old university student finishing up my second year of commercial animation. I enjoy drawing cute girls, hanging with friends and poo jokes.

*- Describe your typical day.*
I spend most of the day/night/my life working on art

Contact, Fifth Element, Howl's Moving Castle, Star Wars, Royal Tenenbaums, and Labyrinth are some of my all-time favs for movies.
For music, it's Radiohead and Daft Punk all the way. When it comes to books, of course HP's pretty cool, not to mention the classics; Alice in Wonderland, Watership Down, Peter Pan. Flight of the Conchords is my favourite tv show at the moment, but you can pretty much tell I used to be a big sailormoon nerd, haha.

*- What's your favorite t-shirt that you have designed?*
I'd have to say my latest one, but I don't know what people will think of it yet. I hope it catches on, haha!

*- What's your favorite Tee that someone else has designed?*
Gamer Mother's pretty awesome. My Imoto is cool, though it does look questionable. Global Warming is amazing and I think Ugly Crew could use some love. I intend to give these three my support!

*- Do you do art projects outside the t-shirt world?*
I'm trying to break into the animation business, but I've been doing other art projects long before shirt design. Shirts have a different aesthetic than with work on paper, so I've been taking hints from other artists here to try and make appealing shirts for everyone. Thus far, it has been a challenging endeavour!

- Tell us about yourself:

I have been an illustrator and comic designer of almost 32 years, happily married. At the moment I lived in The Netherlands, even though, I have Italian origins, anyway often I travel for work, so sometime I'm also in other countries.
I started to work in the art filed since I was really young, so I always attended schools of art and design, and in 2000 I graduated at the International School of Comics in Florence.

Now I'm working as illustrator for novels and other products, but in the free time I'm part of an art circle that works in the field of manga illustrations. So often I work on original manga style stuffs or fanbooks.

Always in the free time I love to make cosplay and cooking, cos I think that to sew dresses and cook dishes is a bit as painting a canvas, so I find these hobbies really creative.

- Describe your typical day.

Well my typical day is full of work, working as a designer I spend my time drawing and writing stuffs for the editors that asked me them.
Anyway I find also some free time to sew cosplay dresses, play video games, doing sports and cook nice dishes for my husband.

- Favorites: movie, music, TV, Books
Honestly I haven't a favorite movie, I saw many nice movies, so it's quite difficult to pick one. About the books, well my favorites are horror/mistery stories in particular that of the
18th and 19th centuries, and historical and art books. While about the music I think that every music can be nice, anyway I love in particular Heavy Metal, JRock and JPop and the Romanian Pop music.
About the TV, I admit that I love to watch animes, in particular if they have a psychological story or they are of action/fantasy/horror genre. I also like cultural programs about history and science.

- What's your favorite t-shirt that you have designed?

Summer School Trip, cos I love the Ragnarok Online monsters Aliot and Alicel, as I love the quest where you have the possibility to go in their dungeon.

- What's your favorite Tee that someone else has designed?

This is really a difficult question, cos I saw really many nice T-shirts, so honestly I can't choose one. They are all so great!

- Do you do art projects outside the t-shirt world?

Yes many, as I said I work in the art field as illustrator and Comics designer, so I'm always busy with new stuff to draw.

- What are you most proud of?

Honestly I can't answer at this question, cos I'm never proud of something that I make.
I think always that I could make better of that, so it's really difficult for me to be proud of something.
Anyway if when I make something for the others and this makes them happy, well I think that I can be proud of this.

- What are some words of advice for fellow Cameesians?

This is really difficult, honestly I haven't really nice advices, but only thanks.I would like to thank Kamil and Cameesa to have given me the possibility to answer at these questions, and to post my T-shirts. And also a thank to all the persons that supported my

I am Argie Salango and Im 21 years of age. Im a freelance shirt designer from the Philippines and am currently studying fashion design.

- Describe your typical day.
Wake up midnoon. Eat my daily brunch. Watch TV. Conceptualize and create designs. Eat again. Then PC again. ahehehe. thats my typical day. Sometimes I do my exercise, I run, just to pump up my day. =)

- Favorites: movie, music, TV, Books (feel free to add your own)
I love movies. I can watch anything...from boring to overkill movies. lol. The best movies I've seen so far include Cannibal Holocaust (1975) Green Mile (1999) The Mist (2007) Love me if you dare, a french film and some Hayao Miyazaki movies (Ponyo, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle). For fashion inspiration. I will always love the galactic proportions of Star Wars and the modern elegance of Sex and the City the movie.

Im also a fan of music. I love the Beatles especially the newly made tribute slash renditions. I also love the folk poppish music of Mandy Moore. Im also a fan of Elliot Yamin, John Mclaughlin, Sarah Bareieles and the Youtube artist, Ricardo Munoz from Spain.

TV? ehhh. I dont watch too much TV, but if given the chance to tune at it all day...Id probably stick to two or three channels. Lifestyle Network, Asian Food Channel and maybe Fashion TV. =)

Books. I dont read that much.

- What's your favorite t-shirt that you have designed?
Phew, I have two designs on my mind right now. Its Kyung Jin (the paper windmill shirt) and the Hope of the Hopeless shirt. Both printed by DBH.

- What's your favorite Tee that someone else has designed?
Im not very particular with faving anyone shirt's design, but i love the style of Jimiyo and Mathiole.

- Do you do art projects outside the t-shirt world?
Yup. I do posters and swimsuit designs. =)

- What are you most proud of?
Im proud of myself because I am earning my own money. I feel a little more independent than before. =)

- What are some words of advice for fellow Cameesians?
WORK HARD. HARDER. put ur best foot in everything you do...and everytime you submit something...always think twice if the design will sell or not...or it would be favored by anyone or not. Working within the shirt industry demands hardwork and originality. Sometimes u really have to be intellegent to win and get a print. =) and one more thing, Enjoy everything you do. if you feel drained and stressed. Take time to relax...then work again. Its also good to take inspiration from your emotions. It enables you to express urself...in the most unique and original way. =)

Describe your typical day.
I'm typically a dreamer, so my head is often in the clouds so to say. I spend a good amount of time learning from life in whatever way I can, and trying to find an acceptable balance between reality and la la land. Oh, I also do my share of eating and playing those darn video games.

Tell us about yourself.
Nick Beery works in a variety of media, supports, and styles. After going into the illustration world for a brief stint I began doing design for some fashion companies and the surf & skate industry. It is fitting for me to tell everyone who asks about my work and processes that I am totally ADD (attention deficit disorder) when it comes to being a creative. I also do the "fine-art" thing and photography as well. You might say I am a jack-o-all-trades and love to experiment and come up with new methods and stylized imagery to make peoples eyes bug out.

Describe your typical day.
The day begins by checking all my mail and addressing any ongoing projects and clients. After a bite I get down to business. Typically I juggle anywhere from 5-10 different projects at any given time. So, my day is usually filled with doing some design work a'la Adobe and Corel, maybe doing some concept roughs and sketches, and then ending the day in the studio painting whatever oil piece I have on the easel. Totally ADD...but it keeps the work fresh and I never get bored by just working on the same ol' monotonous images and style.

I dig all sorts of movies and music. I think BladeRunner takes the cake when it comes to my all time favorite movie. The lighting, cinematography, story, and all the eye candy in the sets of that movie are absolutely brilliant. It is one of those films that every time I watch it I find something new I missed before that blows my mind.
Just like visual art my attention tends to swerve from one genre of music to the next. At the very moment I have been listening to the new Mars Volta, Miike Snow, TV on the Radio, MIA, and my homies The N.O.C.
I don't watch TV...it tends to be an extreme waste of time.
In terms of authors I read anything the likes of Philip K Dick, Lovecraft, Poe, and some books on copyright laws and the exploration of theories put out there by physicists and philosophers. All my other reading is done on the web...which is like staring at the sun while concentrating on the absolute brightest point...not good for the opticals!

What's your favorite t-shirt that you have designed?
I suppose my favorite shirt is the Mickster Mcgee here on Cameesa. I would love to see that get enough support to be printed. I've done some pieces for some skate companies that came out pretty rad and the Octo Coal design for DBH came out amazing...it sold out in less than a month probably. I've got a whole new batch of designs and design styles to bust out soon.

What's your favorite Tee that someone else has designed?
Ellswhere does some pretty rad tees. He's got Sticks & Stones picked up over at DBH and all the shirts they printed of his came out dope. I'd colab with that dude on a design any day.

Do you do art projects outside the t-shirt world?
Tons of projects going on. I am the art director for Defiant Skate out of Seattle. We have some pretty rad new lines getting ready to launch soon. So yeah, everything from products like skate decks and tees to producing some insane paintings that radiate my dark inners as well as some colabs with other designers and photographers. ADD...yup!

What are you most proud of?
I'm a pretty humble dude and would like to think that even as an artist my ego isn't a UFO. That being said I was once so very proud of a contest I won in the 4th grade. It was the Smokey the Bear themed contest that I think all schools across the country had at one point or another when there was more funding to educate children on how not to start a forest fire. The theme was called "Don't Burn My Home". Naturally I drew some burnt of landscape with a barren tree and some animals such as fox, squirrels, birds, spiders, and rabbits living in an old torched tree. Smokey was on the horizon with his shovel no less. I won the contest for the state and went on nationally. Got to meet the governor, help sign a conservation bill, and they gave me more Smokey swag than I ever knew existed. They also planted 10 acres of trees in my name in the Shawnee National Forest...that still kills me. I keep wondering if those trees are gigantic by now!

What are some words of advice for fellow Cameesians?
Keep doing what you love to do. Design and experiment with any and every form of media you can get your hands on. Don't ever just stick to one thing because everyone says your good at it. If the passion drives you and your veins pump full of creative energy you can find so many ways to release and express yourself. You may just find something your extremely good at and never knew it by simply breaking the mold and every day routine. Forget the routine and make room for change always!

Tell us about yourself.
I am wotto, a T-shirt design, illustrator and character designer. I have been freelancing for 10 years and I have worked on many projects. I love doodling and try to create individual characters with a narrative. Most of my work leans towards the dark side and that's fine by me.

Describe your typical day.
Breakfast, emails, websites, work on mac, lunch and then painting or drawing.

Favorites:
I like many many movies, I hate T.V as I find most of it mind numbing rubbish. Music is a passion of mine and I work to an ipod on shuffle. I read Hi Fructose and Juxtapoz and the occasional historical novel. Every once in a while I read a one of the books from the 'Series of Unfortunate Events' for inspiration.

What's your favorite t-shirt that you have designed?
Hard question, I have around 75 under my belt so picking one is hard. I would probably say the 'Thou Shalt Not Steal' design I did, that was my second winner at Threadless. I loved the design itself but it was really important for me to bag a second at Threadless, the place that kick started my tee designing career.

What's your favorite Tee that someone else has designed?
Again that's hard because I own over 300 tees. I know, I know that's too many. I even donated some recently. Anyway my favorite tee right now is probably the 'Judith + Holofernes' tee by Franx at threadless. I have two copies and I wear it very often.

Do you do art projects outside the t-shirt world?
Yes I was recently in a digital art show in O.C, California, I just designed 6 pairs of sneakers for a company in the UK and I am working on a set of paintings right now.

What are you most proud of?
I am proud of the fact that I have always remained me. I have never pandered to a design trend really, I draw for me mainly and I don't chase mass popularity. I don't really want to be mainstream, I like my dark corner. I am proud of my work, but that ususally only lasts for the day I did it, the next day I see faults in it.

What are some words of advice for fellow Cameesians?
I like how Cameesa works, it's a new twist on the T-shirt design site. I think you just have to work hard, like any profession. You also need an identifable style and try to remain fresh. Constantly look around you and strive to be at the head of the pack not following one or two top designers.

Tell us about yourself.
I am a 21 year-old graduate of Grove City College currently working at the direct marketing company Harte-Hanks. I was recently married to the most beautiful girl in the world on August 23rd and just got back from our amazing honeymoon on Maroma Beach in Cancun. When I'm not working or spending time with my wife, I'm pursuing my hobbies of tee-shirt designing and home-brewing my own beer. And in case anyone is wondering, my username comes from an old Nintendo Gamecube character of the same name in the game "Timesplitters." Describe your typical day.
My typical day consists of working 8-6 before heading to the gym until late evening. Occasionally I reserve an hour or two a night for brainstorming and tweaking designs on my HP Tablet.

I did some design pitches for a self-promo campaign for my company last year. I've developed a couple brand logos for friends with small businesses. And I also work on projects that fit more into the poster prints or screen backgrounds genre.

What are you most proud of?
I'm most proud of the fact that I've never quit on anything. I give each project my all and never settle for "just ok." If my name is associated with something, no matter how trivial, it still must meet the standards I hold for myself. I'm also proud that I convinced such a perfect girl to be my wife (I plan on capitalizing on my luck before she realizes her mistake )

What are some words of advice for fellow Cameesians?
More is more. By this I mean that if you put more time, effort, and thought into a design, the better the end result will become and the more you will perfect your skills. Push your limits and expand your capabilities. Go the extra mile. This philosophy will get you far in life.

Giving control back to Artists? Your thoughs?

One issue we've been battling from Day 1: the speed that designs reach $500.

Some possible solutions?
a. Lower support amount to $250 and artist reward to $125.
b. Upon submission, give the artist an option whether to fund the design to $500/$250 reward, or $250/$125 reward
OR
c. The newest option, which I prefer most, after a design reaches $250, the artist has an option to push the button 'fully-supported' AT ANY TIME and they will receive half of the fully-supported amount. For example, a design can be fully-supported at $350, and the artist will receive $175 as a reward...

Shipping Bug on Cameesa, you may see some inconsistencies

We recently discovered a bug that reset all of the shipping amounts on Cameesa to $0.

For example,you would previously see one of your support groups that said $10 support amount + $0 shipping. This was incorrect and we have rectified the situation to display the correct shipping amount.

Tell us about yourself.
If I did I would have to kill you. I run a secret operation of green lemmings. I am from Denver, Colorado, Married with a couple O kids. One boy and one girl. The all american dream. I just turned 30 and decided to get serious about graphic design in general. T-shirt design seems to keep me from pulling my hair out.

Describe your typical day.
Well, as a graphic designer I try and stay active. It is easy sometimes to get lost in the shirt designing world. I have many customers who want design work done throughout the day. They can be so greedy sometimes. They expect me to drop playtime for them. Who do they think they are?

Harry Potter & The Twilight Saga are fun. Figuring out my new Blackberry has it's moments. I enjoy mostly walks on the beach, I don't live near a beach though. So I settle forthe front lawn. Of course hanging out with the wife and kids.

Well it was not on Camessa it was on woot. It was called "Those Suns" Very fun design. I will be adding it to Camessa in a few weeks. The whole 60 days thing. On Cameesa right now it would be "Abstract Deco".

I really like 1928. Birth of an Icon by skirochester

Do you do art projects outside the t-shirt world?
I am pretty much a sign maker where I dwell. Sometimes that counts as art. I do vehicle graphics as well.

What are you most proud of?
My Children and my Wife. Being a self employed graphic designer is hard without the support of loved ones. It is hard to explain why a little ol design can take hours to complete. They got my back though.

What are some words of advice for fellow Cameesians?
Run! Godzilla is coming!

Ive been a professional digital fantasy artist for over 6 years now and I just love it. I recently enrolled in the Academy Of Art University in San Fransisco where I will study Illustration.

Describe your typical day.
Wake up. Cook/serve/eat breakfast. Feed Cats. Work on art/school. Cook/serve/eat lunch. Feed Cats. Work on art/school. Play Ragnarok Online. Cook/serve/eat dinner. Feed Cats. Read. Sleep.

Favorites:
I love fantasy adventure books, Ragrarok Online, and Sailor Moon.

I would have to say 'Endless Summer' but that is the ONLY tshirt I designed! lol

I am a graphic designer in Rochester, NY. I currently work in the advertising department for Wegmans, a large grocery store chain. I have also worked at two other advertising agencies in Rochester. I graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

A typical day for me is wake up at 5:30 to exercise, go to work, and then come home and work on the house or relax. And on Thursdays I am usually trying to come up with a good idea for the weekly contest at shirt.woot.com.

Favorite movies: Jaws, Dark Knight, Anchorman, Hot Rod, Shawshank, etc. Favorite music: Alternative and classic rock. Favorite TV: 30 Rock, Arrested Development, Seinfeld, Office, Lost, Entourage, The Wire.
My favorite t-shirt that I have designed? Hmm... Well, I have a soft spot for my Art Deco Microphone which was my first win on Woot, and I am very pleased with both my One Man Band shirt, and my Steampunk Gameboy shirt that were on Woot and are now on Cameesa for sale.
I don't really have a favorite T that someone else has designed. There have been a bunch that I like, and a bunch that I respect the art but would never wear.

I really haven't done art projects outside of the t-shirt world in a long time. I used to paint, but really have not had the time to get into it in the past few years.
I am most proud of my wife, my minature schnauzer, and my house. The house is my new "art" project.
The best advice I can offer is to think outside of the box. Don't settle on an idea just because you think it will be popular to the masses. Stay true to your style and grow within it. Great ideas can be seen in any style of art. Make your style work for the idea, don't make an idea fit into your style.

This is one of those questions that makes me think for hours. Ok, I will make it simple. Who am I? I'm Dina Prasetyawan aka kooky love, 32 years old graphic designer for kids apparel in Indonesia and freelancer artist. I've got the name of kooky love after i joined in threadless.com on June 2005. I'm just an ordinary man who spends my life with a wife and a little daughter. I trust in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. I’ve always know I would be an artist or a designer as my goal career since I was a little kid. I'm a self-educated artist. I never graduated from art school/ college. I don't have a degree in art.

Describe your typical day
Sleep until my wife or my daughter wake me up to get ready for praying together in the morning. My daughter has a unique way to wake me up. She plucks my hair on my feet. hehehehehe. After that, I take her to kindergarten. Have some breakfast. Drive to work with my motorcycle, which is a 30 minute drive. I work until 4:30 pm or sometimes later. Drawing, sketching, designing on the computer for apparel that will be embroidered, printed, etc.It's fun to have an apparel design that is worn by kids around me. Once home again, I spend more time with my daughter and wife. I try to get any kind of shirt design for freelance/ internet work done that I can before bed. Finally, before going to sleep, I meditate on a Bible verse. Roll it around in my mind over & over. Then watch the Lord bless overnight.

Yes, I do.
I do some projects for weeding photography editing. Painting on canvas. I like writting short stories and screenplays for movies. I like playing drama and making short independent movies with my friends. What are you most proud of?
Uhm..eh..what should I say to answer this. In life, I'm proud to be a son of God in Jesus Christ. Just Him can save my life. I'm proud to be a husband and father. I proud of my family.

About myself: I grew up in Oregon drawing and skateboarding. Moved to SF in '99, now live in Berkeley with my fiance and cat. Graduated from California College of Art with a BA in illustration. I still draw and skateboard, but now I get paid to draw. I also love to ride my bike, be in nature, snowboarding when I can, go to galleries, and just explore the bay area.

Typical day: Wake up around 9 or 10, make coffee, check my emails, start whatever job(s) I have going. Take a lunch break around 2 or 3, and go for a bike ride or skate. I live like 2 blocks from the UC Berkeley campus. Come home and get back to work till 8 or 9, make dinner, and either go back to work till 12 or 2 am, or watch a movie/tv, depending on how much energy I have and how many jobs I have going. Repeat 6-7 days a week.

Projects outside the t-shirt world? Yes! More than half of the freelance work I do is outside the tshirt world. I do a lot of editorial work for magazines. I do posters, flyers, stickers, and album artwork for bands. I do random jobs for friends and individuals, usually portraits, digital or painted. I do a lot of paintings that end up in either, shows or being sold at my friends gallery/retail store. I also love to do murals when I can, with house paint and spray paint. I dabble in design and logo work for companies that I like.

I am most proud of getting a college degree and making my mom proud of me.
Doing covers for SF Guardian, Award from Illustration Arts, and doing t-shirts for Goapele.

Words of advice: Never give up on your art. Keep drawing, practicing. Have patience. Explore the world of art an find a niche thats really suits you. Make work that YOU love. Did I mention keep drawing?

Tell us about yourself.

I'm a proud graphic designer, from Brazil, and I am 26 yrs old. I was born in 'São Paulo' but I moved a lot during my life, and now I live by the beach. Which is way more healthy than the chaos of living downtown. Always loved to create and draw so that was easy to find the perfect career. Now I work for 'deviantART' and I am really happy and proud about that. Thats just a short brief about me, more will be revealed during this 'interview', which I am really happy with it. Describe your typical day.

My typical day basically consist in work, draw a little bit, check out design stuff or some cool tutorial. So that's pretty much design, design and design. =)

Hum. I'm not really much into movies and TV shows. But I do watch things like anyone does.

Favorite movies hum? Let's say '300' for now. I love the visuals in this one. It's amazing. And TV shows I do like 'LA.ink', 'Miami Ink' and Prison Break is really cool too.

Music is something awesome. Is funny how a song affects us by making us feel better, or remembering a good time with friends and all that stuff, so, I love music. I like a bunch of stuff, from 'Rap Metal' to 'Hardcore', to 'Punk', to 'Brazillian music'; curently '7,014' songs on my PC. (yay)

What's your favorite t-shirt that you have designed?

Thats kinda hard to pick one. I would say that my favorite t-shirt is the one that people buy and feel good by wearing it. Thats the whole point. But if I have to pick one special I would choose the 'Till Death Do Us Part' that was an t-shirt contest hosted by threadless for the band 'the Used', which I really like. So that was a special t-shirt, you know?! Just to have a great band judging it and also receive an 'autographed' t-shirt signed, that was really cool.

What's your favorite Tee that someone else has designed?

Also hard to pick one! I love t-shirts, so I have many favorites. But I can say that I love the work of 'hydro74'. So probably something that he designed for 'Vans' or 'Billabong' would be a good choice.

Do you do art projects outside the t-shirt world?

Yes! I'm really into t-shirt right now, but I do have others projects.
I mean, that's where everything started right?! So I do and I like to do some logos, flyers, cd covers etc.

You pissed about the new quality of Cameesa Tees?

On March 16th, 2009, we decided to decrease our support amount from $20 down to $10. However, we failed to mention that lowering this amount would require 2 huge changes in Cameesa Tees.

The 2 main changes would include:
1. Switching from American Apparel to Tultex Tees.
2. Switching from 'printed' tags to 'sewn-in' tags.

While lowering the support amount we failed to mention that these changes would be happening. Listening to the outrage, and anger of the Cameesa community for the past two weeks has been very painful for us, and it is once again decision time.

From the reaction of the community it sounds like everyone is pretty upset about the switch to Tultex tees and 'sewn-in' tags.

We are still very new at this and are trying to figure things out, although you may not care. Our #1 goal is making you happy and we previously believed that price-sensitivity vs. Quality was a large issue.

We are considering on raising support prices to $15, and bringing back American Apparel Tees and 'printed-in' tags.

We would love to hear your thoughts on this. We do feel like we are taking away from you by raising the support amount from $10 to $15, but the quality of our product will quickly increase again.

Expiring Designs

I am a 20 year old student from NJ who goes to school up in Boston.
Self taught graphic designer. I run my own clothing company (labyrinth)

Describe your typical day

My typical day starts at 9, I get up and check emails, package orders, brainstorm ideas, start drawing and hopefully make a complete illustration by the end of the day. Or finish working on whichever bands merch I am doing at the time. I stop working around 5-6 pm depending on what I have to do.

Recurring Disappointments: coq music

i just got my Coq Music in. I waited a long time for it to get printed, as many of its supporters did, so I was very excited to own it finally when the design was finally fully supported. Needless to say, I was a bit worried when I got an email stating that the design came out a little different, but I bit my lower lip and crossed my fingers.

So I get it today and the phonograph looks great. And the parrot looks great. and then I see the rooster. And I wonder, what in the hell led you guys to make him PEA GREEN??? The original color was a creme color. That's extremely not correct.

Given that this has now happened at least thrice (Most notably with Gamer Mother, but also rectified with Explanation for my passion, and now Coq) in the short span of your catalog, it makes me, the buyer, feel uncomfortable supporting ANYTHING if the chance is that you will end up sending me something with at least one color that is not only off, but TOTALLY off. Why would anyone want to take that risk? I understand things aren't always 100% perfect from design to print, but huge color substitutions utilizing ugly colors should not be happening. I want a creme. Hell, I'd rather the rooster not even have a body than have it be a huge swatch of one of the least appealing colors ever.

Talk to your printers, guys, because this has happened a lot. Don't strike off if there is a glaring alteration which will probably hurt sales or anger supporters. Make them make it right. If they won't, find a printer who will do better, and DOES have a guarantee of some sort. If I'm getting an email saying that my design was ruined, but I'm getting it anyway, I feel like you don't care about me as a customer, and in turn, I feel like I shouldn't care about you as a business. Screw all this new layout and new products nonsense. Print your shirts better. THEN worry about new product. If the old product keeps coming out questionably, no one is going to buy from you no matter what you start offering. And for those of us who ordered coq music or gamer mother, man up and give us what we supported. Have respect for what you are selling. I don't see how you can strike off on product that has glaring differences and shrug and say "good enough." What sort of customer satisfaction is that?

I was just wondering if there were any plans to do reprints in the near future. A lot of the shirts are out of stock in a lot of sizes and I have several friends who expressed interest in a few of the shirts, but obviously can't purchase them since there's none left...

I think it'd look good for the site if it kept a decent stock on a majority of their shirts; especially since their selection is still on the smaller side.

Newly printed design question

So, I just came on today and noticed that the top three supports were different. I found this refreshing, but then noticed that one of them actually got printed, and this was baffling to me. Baffling because just a couple days ago it was second to print (and had been for quite a while). It isn't impossible to think a shirt would skyrocket up the charts... miss monster's foo dog did. Cheer Up She Found You and 1928 both did. But this stalled for a while. It just didn't seem right

I'd actually been talking about the entry yesterday with a friend, and they noted something I had to go confirm now that it's being printed: Sure enough, in this post, the designer states:

You read right, coming up super fast over the fourth of July weekend, I’ll be a registered artist dealer at Anthrocon. Looks like my table is B04, but this subject to change, as always.

I’ll have the usual spread of art prints, original sketches, and trinkets at the table. The new Coyote and Kirin stickers will be there, as well as the Mysterbox, full of mystery bags.

And some news on the ‘Fire Dog’ Tee that’s up for pre-sale, we’re just shy of halfway, at 220/500 at the time of posting. I’ll be creating flyers for Anthrocon, to help spread the word, once I return home, I’ll be paying out of pocket the remaining funds needed to get the shirt to print. So if you had planned to grab one at the $10 pre order price, consider doing so before the 4th of July.

My question, then, is this. Obviously it is good that people want to promote their designs. People should promote their designs. That's how they get supported. That's how people find new designs at Cameesa. Etc Etc. But is it really OK to fund your own design out of pocket?

Besides the obvious (kicking a deserving, CROWD-supported design out of the top three featured on the front page, for example), there are some disturbing trends here. Firstly, it hurts Cameesa's integrity. Someone could easily drop $500, get 50 of their own shirt, and not only get the prize they're owed from Cameesa for printing, but get to mark each of their shirts up. Someone could sell each shirt at the same price as Cameesa, but rake in all the profit. Not to mention an extra dollar every time a shirt sells at Cameesa, in addition to the per-sale perks otherwise. It would be no sweat for someone to make a grand off their shirt by selling it themselves, instead of finding dedicated fans to support instead. And knowing that, what is to stop more people who don't understand the true spirit of this site from lining their own pockets that way?

Second, because Cameesa doesn't have real quality controls in place (anything that can get a support is allowed in), what would it take for a design to be funded that way, but literally have NO audience? The presumption is that if 50 people will support your design, eventually other people will buy it as well. If you are all 50 people, or even some overly large chunk of it, it is not unthinkable for Cameesa to find itself with a whole crapload of deadstock.

And even if it's not a full support, it's still detrimental to lower designs. Let's say a designer pumped an extra hundred in once his design hit thirty supports. A $400 supported design is going to get those last supports way faster because it's so close to printing. Let's say the design hit around $300 and then the designer paid off the rest, even. Scenario 1 fixes the exposure unfairly (many people likely check the most supported items first and less often browse the rest, meaning that whatever was in the top 3 before could be kicked out for the sake of the other design). Scenario 2 could alter the entire print queue, though, sending tees that could have been on the verge of a boost down deeper into the ranks, all because one person wanted their own shirt to finally print. It disrupts the general fairness of whatever is the most popular first winning. Your shirt is not most popular if you are it's main supporter.

It's not to say that this particular scenario is automatically wrong, but it could lead to a very disturbing and disheartening trend. I am simply afraid that if this sort of discussion doesn't come up now, when it is relevant, it will become a problem that plagues Cameesa. This is a site based on Crowdfunding. One person is not a crowd.

I just picked upp my 3rd support shirt from the post office. The problem is that it's getting a bit expensive for us Swedes. The customs charge me over $19 before I can get the shirt which I've already paid for.
I'm being charged because one shirt is valued $49.04 at the declaration. So my question now is; how can one shirt be valued to such an amount? Is the shipping included in the value?

We have had our first Operation up for about 2 weeks now, and have been listening to feedback and making tweaks along the way. The major feedback and change was to section off each Operation away from the main designs.

How many shirts are being printed???

I'll be honest, when this site launched, I was a big fan of the idea! Invest in a shirt, get a shirt, and then make a small commission on each sale. Now I wasn't expecting hundreds of dollars in dividends, but if my account is correct, it seems very few shirts are getting sold (or printed).

Let's take "Cheer Up" for instance. Obviously 50 shirts would have to be printed, $10 to 500. This way, all 50 supports would get a shirt. Currently, my account shows I have received dividends for 7 sold. This is not a big deal or anything, except when you look at the sale page, there are 6 sizes out of stock already! How can selling 7 shirts sell out 6 sizes? It's no wonder that Cameesa is saying they take a hit every time they print if you are printing 60 to 70 at a time! Having done some research, it takes at least 150 to 250 shirts to make a print profitable.

I'm just curious how Cameesa intends to keep itself viable having half of the available sizes sold out before 10 shirts have sold to end customers. T-shirts are kind of an impulse purchase. People are a lot less likely to click the button to buy when a reprint happens as they are when the shirt is in stock when the desire to have it hits them.

Thoughts? What's going on here?

I am concerned about the apparent lack of quality control on many shirts being submitted. I understand there are a range of different tastes, and some shirts may need to be available for several months in the support phase, but there appear to be dozens of shirts languishing for months at the bottom with $10 or $0 support. Even the submitter of the shirt isn't supporting? I get a lot of e-mails from Cameesa with new shirts to be supported, and although there is the occasional fantastic one, on many of them I am cringing. I love the idea of crowdfunding, but I am concerned that if there is no attempt and quality control or removal of shirts that clearly have no chance of every going to print after a reasonable period of time, the site is getting bogged down with a lot of clutter.

I certainly am not trying to be mean, as I really like Cameesa. But the more substandard art that shows up and is allowed to stick around for months, I wonder if Cameesa will ever be able to "break in" you know?

Pantone colors - just how do I find them?

Maybe I'm just dumb. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places. Whatever the case, I have no idea how to find "pantone colors" as specified in the requirements for having a design approved. When I tried to google it all I could find were websites to find colors based on numbers, and other websites that talked about really complex things such as calling in for evaluations and running businesses. I'm confused, I don't know where to turn, and frankly it's stressing me out a little. :(

Can someone PLEASE explain to me how I can find out an images pantone colors? I'd really appreciate it.

So mine came... The print is okay, but now the quality of the shirts? Very, very thin. I honestly don't want to wear it. Wet toliet paper is thicker. I tried it on, and my bra (a nice skin tone one) actually showed through. No, I will not supply pictures of that. I was so excited about this being printed, too, and now it's unwearable. I liked the old way of tagless info and now the huge tag is kind of tacky and cheap looking.
The older Cameesa shirts I have are good (well, decent) quality. I understand Cameesa is still trying to find its way, but with all the messed up colors of some of the prints and now with this strange shirt quality, I really worry about the future here.

Trademarked 'designs' being approved?

Is anyone concerned (can be read upset and/or outraged) at the rash of Ragnarok designs on the approved entries? Lots of odd anime pieces (some with Ragnarok slapped onto them) getting approved by staff for people to support... I'm confused. Wouldn't this hurt Cameesa by printing designs with trademarked material? I mean 11 designs get slapped up tonight and they're all the same weird brand stuff. Surely cameesa doesn't want to print gear for another site... or do they?

Okay, I'm not really a designer by trade. Perhaps that is why this question is so basic.
I have difficulty with resizing for submission to this site and others like it.
I draw my images in AI, resize to 540 x 540 px then export as jpeg. When I open it in PS it is much larger. When I to try to resize it in PS, to 540 px it blurs all to heck...
What am I doing wrong.
Please help...

Tell us about yourself
I'm a french artist who lives in Belgium. I wake up not so early, i buy two "petits pains", white chocolate and dark chocolate.
Then, i write my dream, check my mails and read some rss feeds (friends, newscientist, blogs...) while eating. I listen some music (Pink Floyd at the moment), and my day is starting, it depends of what i have to do, it can be drawing, writing etc. Friends come to my house or i go to theirs, we work together until 3 or 4 in the morning.

Repeat.

Your favorites and things that amaze you
- I'm not used to class my tastes in term of favorites, but here is what impressed me since a few months; Salò from Pasolini (movie) and "les 120 jours de sodome" from le Marquis de Sade. The Wall from Pink Floyd (movie and album)

I do read a lot of psychological or sociological studies, but it's quite hard to classify them. Maybe "FatPony" or "IL FAIT TRES FROID DEHORS." My friend Bastien Quignon (Babatai) has some great illustrations, i hope he will be printed soon.

Do you do other work aside from Tee design?
Tshirt design may represent 5% of my work, i mainly do books or exhibitions.

- My current work about medias, a comic book of about one hundred pages,
i also published a little book recently of my daily drawings (here)

- Try to look outside of tshirt design, read books, talk to your grand mother.

Tell us about yourself

This is one of those questions that usually leaves me sitting for hours thinking...how can I be clever and make it seem like I am some kind of really interesting person that people want to know about. I have done that enough times to simply give up and say...I'm really not that interesting until you get to know me..

Describe your typical day
Lay in bed until my wife somehow gets me up to get ready for work, eat, get on the bus, for the 45-60 minute ride to work: read a paper and sleep. Work until 5:30 (sometimes all night) get on the bus once again and get out my pens to rack my brain to come up with another character to draw. Yes, all these fun little guys are a product me deciding I am through making excuses for not sketching... Once at home besides the obvious rituals of eating and watching LOST I spend more time getting any kind of shirt design work done that I can before bed.
Favorites

Movie: I do enjoy a lot of movies, for now I will just give the one that comes to mind right away - Tekkon Kinkreet. I love the style and the amazing artwork throughout this fun story.

Music, TV, Books: these questions are always so hard for me, I end up thinking to long about it since I am the kind of guy who doesn't seem to stick with favorites, they kind of change week to week.

What's your favorite t-shirt that you have designed?I enjoy "my Imoto" and "Where the clouds came out" - both have not been picked up....yet:(

What's your favorite Tee that someone else has designed? I would hate to single anyone out...seriously there are to many that get me all tingly

Do you do art projects outside the t-shirt world?
Back in the day, I actually used to do landscape and animal paintings. Back in school I produced a series of sculpted mugs. I also used to paint and sell Warhammer sculptures. Currently, I do a lot of Branding work and some motion design

What are you most proud of?
Wow, I am not sure how to answer that...unrelated to art I think mainly that I married my girlfriend from Poland, moved her to my hometown in Idaho, then moved by ourselves to Chicago where we have somehow survived for about 2 years now.

What are some words of advice for fellow Cameesians?
If you're ever on the red line el in Chicago avoid staring at the guy who barks.....but really my only advice is to keep trying.

Who is Herman Lee?
I am a 23 year old graphic designer and a football/soccer fanatic who moved to Hong Kong from Toronto, Canada not too long ago.

Tell us abour yourself, as a person and as an artist? What type of category of work do you feel that you fit in?
I’ve always know I would do design or art as a career when I was a little kid. When I was little, often in classes I’d always doodle and doodle until it annoyed the teachers. I’d consider myself a pretty easy-going guy and would have a drink with anyone who enjoys random chats on anything from UFOs to the proper timing and technique of cooking a ramen.

I don’t think I fit into any category in terms of my work. Maybe experimental perhaps? I’m always aiming and try doing different styles and technique with my works.

What is the most controversial thing that you have done with your artwork?
Haha, I consider my works are pretty conservative compared to most of the other artists out there. One incident I can think of is maybe of the Pollock tee I did for Threadless. The shirt I designed had Pollock painting and I had a few people commented how I ripped the idea off some other tee brand. I mean, come on, I have Pollock painting, how do you call that a rip actually? It would be a better case if the design had Pollock opening a bag of ketchup Lay’s and I had Pollock popping off Pringles.

What is the biggest thing you would like to achieve in the next year?
Tough question. I’m a pretty laid back person so I don’t tend to get too ahead of myself. Perhaps getting invited and flied to some design exhibitions.

Shop page layout: could newest be better promoted?

For the first time in awhile I clicked on the Shop button. I thought the newest shirts were added to the top. Instead I find the newest to print shirts at the bottom, not even full size.

This "showcase" of "Brand New Tees To Buy" works on the page http://cameesa.com/. However, at the Shop button (http://cameesa.com/shop) this doesn't work so great.

If someone were just visiting to see what was new, would they scroll down? Or would they just see the first three rows of shirts and assume nothing new was here?

My name is Tom Moyer, although I'm known online as skirochester. I've always had a passion for drawing and art and I was fortunate enough to turn that into a career. I work as a senior art director for an ad agency and love what I do.

I have more interests than spare time, so I'm never bored. I love to ski, play tennis, golf, soccer and go fishing. I have trouble turning down a poker game. Custom Car Skins Competition

Hey all!

I don't think I mentioned it before, but I work with a company called Local Motors. We are designing & building cars for local regions (hence the "local"). A bunch of car lovers & designers get together a www.local-motors.com to submit design proposals, then they vote and choose their favorites. Some get built for the designated region - ok, ONE has been chosen to be built so far. But we're only a year in the works so that's not bad at all!

To my point, I'm reaching out here because we are about to host our first "Custom Car Skins" competition. Car buyers get to host a competition by telling the community what type of graphics they want on their ride, and then they name the price from $200-over $1,000 depending on complexity.

The first car skins comp is to design a skin for our CEO's Mercedes 280SL - not a LM vehicle, but our first shot out of the barrel. We are refining our process by experimenting on his car (hah! be nice).

About me:
I am from Athens, Ga. I began designing when I was a freshman in college for the local band that I was in. Over the course of the next four years, I would be learning the ins and outs of the screen printing/design business. I have been given grace by God to work on some big projects for some corporate monsters, including Anheuser-Busch, Cedar Fair Entertainment, Abercrombie & Fitch, Yamaha, and REMO Drumheads to name a few. I recently began to design some more random/artsy tees to try and get some fun things printed and not just design at the whim of others.

Typical Day:
I typically wake up between 9 and 10 am - which I need to fix, 8 am would be much more ideal - and I start my day off at a local coffee shop, enjoying a bottomless cup of coffee while reading, praying, you know, just trying to grow closer to my Creator (What does all this matter if you're not storing up treasures in Heaven, right?) After that, I head back home, and have a look at my design schedule for that day, and get to workin'. I feel extremely blessed to be able to be flexible with my time, and still do what I love to make money. My nights are always unpredictable, but they most always include hanging out with my friends, encouraging and loving one another - everyone needs it!

Favorite Movies:
Man, I saw Slumdog Millionaire recently - that movie was quite baller. I love Dumb and Dumber - it will forever be the funniest movie ever made. The Departed was a masterpiece. Dark Knight was amazing.

Favorite Books:
I've never been much of an avid reader until recently, but probably my favorite book of modern times is Crazy Love by Francis Chan.

Favorite TV Show:
I don't have too much time for television, but Family Guy is freakin' great.

Favorite Tee Design I've done: You know, I honestly love the one that you guys printed (One Tree at A Time). You won't believe how long I had been trying to find a company to print it! Thank YOU!

Favorite Tee Someone Else Designed: I love Shepard Fairey, who started OBEY. I don't actually own any of his tees, but I have his 2 books. Everything he designs rocks the crap out of my world.

Art Projects out of the Tee World: I do a lot of Logo/Identity design, and I'm working to get more into Album Layouts for bands. I also work a lot in the arena of Photography - love it.

Most Proud of:
My parents. They are amazing.

Words of Advice:
Have fun with your clients and projects. Show them that you love what you do. Find inspiration in what brings you smiles and intrigues you - for me, that's obscure textures and urban scenery. Do your best to keep from getting stressed out.

Describe your typical day:
They're pretty... typical. I wont go into details, but I'll say that they usually start around 6AM and end near midnight. I'm very tired.

Favorites:
Movie: I can't think of what my favorite movie would be, but I do know that I really want to see Run Lola Run again, that was my favorite years ago but it's been about 10 years since I've seen it.
Music: I love loads of music, but Arcade Fire is always good.
TV: When it comes to TV, I'm not that discriminating. I even watch Celebrity Apprentice (go, Joan Rivers!). Other than all the normal good shows like Heroes and Lost, I really love Buffy the Vampire Slayer (and even the Angel spinoff).
Books: Books are my favorite thing. I read a ton of fiction. One of my favorites is the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series (I can list a ton more, so don't get me started). If anyone has any recommendations, please tell me. I need a good new book. Though, if you recommend Cormac McCarthy's The Road, I will cease listening to you.

Do you do art projects outside the t-shirt world?
Yep. I'm a freelance graphic designer/illustrator/what-have-you. Right now I'm designing backdrops for a play based on the old Sierra adventure games. If you live in the NYC area, you should go see it.

What are you most proud of?
Well... I should say my kid, I think. Or maybe myself? I'm really good at solving riddles, though. That makes me secretly proud.

What are some words of advice for fellow Cameesians?
Go support more designs. That's all I've got. :)

A Cameesa user's comment stated, "It's frustrating when all my supports reset after one design I supported is being printed. I had to go through and try to remember everything I had previously supported."

There were many votes for this functionality on our feedback system and it's finally here.

As of today, when one design is fully-supported all of your remaining designs will not disappear from your support group. You will then have the option to ReSupport all designs by just inserting money into the group....without having to go through the Support process again.

Please let me know what you think once a design is fully-supported....which should be Coq Music or Our Lady Of Guadalupe any minute now.

Tell us about yourself:
Well, my name's Jon and I live on a small, wet, far away island called Britain, a strange land where people mostly drink tea, eat biscuits, and talk at length about the weather. I like biscuits. I have also been known to enjoy making jam, wearing stupid clothes, and getting hopelessly lost in unknown cities. As well as drawing rubbish things, I like books, as you could probably guess from my Cameesa design Take Me To Your Reader, and studied English literature at Oxford University; unsurprisingly, I am now a bit of a hobo.

Describe your typical day:
Generally it involves a lot of sitting around, a fair amount of sleep, copious quantities of tea and coffee, and, preferably, plenty of delicious cake. Sometimes I do some work, but usually only when there's nothing on the telly. I also spend a lot of time in charity shops, searching for old junk, dusty books, and bits of plastic tat, all of which I find depressingly exciting.

Favorites:
Movies: Blade Runner, Harvey, A Mighty Wind, Shaun of the Dead... lots of other films, particularly anything a bit rubbish.
Music: Pretty eclectic, and mostly trash. I love twee indie, 60s psychedelia, 80s pop, folk and electro. Some of my favorite artists are The Kinks, Belle and Sebastian, Bjork, David Bowie, Blur and Lemon Jelly.
TV: Spaced- best show ever. I've also spent my life pretty much obsessed with Dr Who. At the moment I love Mad Men, and Ashes to Ashes, the sequel to the original British version of Life on Mars. I'm also addicted to the UK version of The Apprentice. And I watch far too much televisual junk.
Books: Lots, but maybe my top favorites are Tristram Shandy, The Waste Land (poem), and Three Men in A Boat. I also love Shakespeare and Milton, and all sorts of other things. On a more geekulous level, Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels and HP Lovecraft are both awesome.

What's your favorite t-shirt that you have designed?
Probably "A History of Western Philosophy. With Owls", which is being printed soon. It's the kind of random thing I like.

What's your favorite Tee that someone else has designed?
I like wearing strange art-school-y designs- I prefer random things to jokey shirts. There are so many tees that I love, but I think my fave is a Genevieve Gauckler shirt I have from 2K, with three strange blob creatures that says "Elves, dwarves, and creatures with magical powers are welcome". My fave cameesa design is Pimpant's Coq Music - I hope that gets fully supported soon.

Do you do art projects outside the t-shirt world?
I do a lot of other design and illustration, posters and print. I'm hoping eventually to move more into editorial and book illustration. I also love more craft-based projects, and enjoy making weird things. I used to do a lot of ceramic work.

What are you most proud of?
There are lots of little things I'm proud of, but far more things that I want to do in the future. But I always feel proud of my friends. And
of my cake-making abilities, oh yes.

What are some words of advice for fellow Cameesians?
Hey Cameesians! On a Cameesa level, I think the best advice is to keep spreading the word- the more people know about the site and what goes on here, the more people will support tees and the more awesome shirts you'll get to wear. For artists, use this site to make the designs you want to make, without worrying about the audience. If you build it, they will come. Possibly. And on a general level: don't worry, be nice to people, and it'll probably be alright in the end.

Tell us about yourself:
My name is April, but most people in cyberspace call me Loopy. It's pretty fitting considering some of the terms in the definition of the word are "full of loops" which would describe my hair, and "crazy" and "confused," which would describe my state of mind most of the time. I'm married, and we live in a quiet suburb near Montgomery, Alabama. No kids yet, but we have a dog, a cat, and a betta.

Describe your typical day:
Regarding week days, I usually exhaust the left side of my brain writing web programs and designing reports for the first half of my day. After that I go home, chill out with my husband for a while, then exhaust the right side of my brain drawing tee shirt designs.

Favorites:
Movie: When Harry Met Sally
Music: U2, Queen, Evanescence, and lately the silly group The Lonely Island has been cracking me up. "I'm on a Boat!" ROFL.
TV: Big Bang Theory, Heroes, and Grey's Anatomy
Books: As far as classic literature, a couple of my favorites are Jane Eyre and A Tale of Two Cities, but I as far as more current reading I have to admit my guilty pleasure with the Harry Potter series.

What's your favorite t-shirt that you have designed?
The Eye is the Window. I liked using symbolism in it. It hasn't printed yet, but I'm hopeful.

What's your favorite Tee that someone else has designed?
I Want To Dance Too by Recycledwax. I love how he personified the different cocktail glasses.

Do you do art projects outside the t-shirt world?
My friends and I get together every other week for what we call "Craft Night." We try out all sorts of projects including sewing, scrapbooking, assembling wedding invitations, making christmas ornaments, etc.

What are you most proud of?
At the moment, I guess I'm most proud that I've finally found a practical and fun way to use my drawing skills. I've always been able to draw, but after High School i had a difficult time getting motivated.

What are some words of advice for fellow Cameesians?
There are some very talented artists here. I would say to be supportive of them as well as your own designs. It's a great feeling to be able to encourage people and help others achieve getting printed.

Opinions on Saving an old support group

What I am working on: Once a design is fully-supported then we want to save that support group with the designs so people don't have to support all previous designs again.

My question to you: when an old support is saved with $0 inside it, would you like to have the option of supporting that group with a different amount, or would you rather keep the same amount as before?

For example, Group 1 ($20) has design A and B inside it. Once B becomes 100% supported, Group 1 will be saved with design A inside it, but the support amount will go down to $0 and you will have to support it with money again. Should: a) you have the option to support with a new amount like $10 or $30 or, b) you don't have the option to change the amount, and just input the same $20 into the Group?

A or B? what do you prefer and why?

I prefer B, cause after some time I may change my mind how much a support group should have inside it.

Tell us about yourself:

I'm a married dad of 2 kids. I'm a programmer in a large corporation so art is my escape. I've been designing t-shirts for the last couple years but I've always had some art outlet -- when I was a kid it was drawing, in college it was watercolors. I like crisp and stylized designs so that's what I've mostly created with my t-shirts. Because of that, I've become much more proficient in Illustrator than Photoshop. I had to use Photoshop to put together the banner for this interview and I'm sure I did things the hard way. Speaking of the banner, this is a mix of some of the shirts I've had printed and some of my recent designs that might show up somewhere. The thumb on the end is the award symbol for the Best Loser Awards I give to Shirt.Woot Derby designs I like that don't win -- hence the name of my blog, BestLosers.com.

Describe your typical day:

My typical day is being woken up between 5 and 6 to take over baby care so my wife can get a few uninterrupted hours of sleep before I start work. She's on duty all night so it's the least I can do. I usually work from home and stop work right at 5 to jump back into kid care until they're both asleep by around 7pm. Then we have a couple hours to decompress. That's when I might get a chance to work on a t-shirt, a logo, or on my blog.

Favorites:
Movie = Say Anything or Princess Bride or I Married An Axe Murderer. As you can guess, I like movies that are fun to quote.
Music = My favorite, when I was younger, was Prefab Sprout. Lately I'm listening to Anberlin, Vampire Weekend, and Glasvegas.
TV = Favorite right now might be 30 Rock. I like really old B/W shows like Dick Van Dyke, Andy Griffith, and Twilight Zone.
Books = Mostly sci-fi. Fave authors lately are John Scalzi and Jack McDevitt.

What's your favorite t-shirt that you have designed?:

It might sound corny but I really like the shirt I had printed here, Listen to the B-side. It's exactly what I like -- simple, stylized, and bold yet understated. It was inspired by the 12" remix LPs of the 80s and the title is sort of a quote from the beginning of the remix version of Scritti Politti's "Absolute".

What's your favorite t-shirt that someone else designed?

That changes a lot. Right now I'm really digging Jimiyo's New Waves. It's way more ornate than what I typically go for but the colors keep it simple.

Do you do art projects outside the t-shirt world?

I've recently started playing around with doing logo contests and am really enjoying that. I love the idea of simplifying an idea to just the most basic of elements that suggest a picture. That's not something that usually works on t-shirts so logos are a fun alternative.

Who is Daniel Newman?

I am a 29 year old maker of doodles based in Newberg, Oregon. I'm just an average Joe that has an ever growing love for drawing. I'm a rather indecisive, and shy guy in person sometimes, maybe. I would say that I am a very visual thinker, so for me I see the world in shades, lines, colors, and shapes. I enjoy nature, the changing of the seasons, classical music, and a good old book. And The Arts of course, all of them.

I studied both the preforming arts, and visual arts in High School and college, with hopes of becoming an actor. Actors don't work from home that often, so the fine art won out in the end, but I wouldn't turn down a script should the situation ever present itself. This "Want to do it all" approach is the real driving force behind what I do artistically. I would hate to think of what I might be missing.

How did you get into design, and what do you like most about it?

I could talk for days on this topic. I have been making artistic expressions in one way or another ever since I was a kid. Some of them ended up looking good enough to frame. For me, what makes a style work is the most interesting part. The technique, what type of lines to use, the values and shades Colors and so on. The bones of the artwork. I would say most of what I have learned by drawing is a result of trying new things and lucky guesses in regards to what goes where on the paper or screen.

I rarely use a pencil sketch, I will go right at it with a pen or stylus. I frequently use reference photos, or in some cases for people drawing, I will use Poser 3d reference models. To answer the question, I only really got into art professionally in the past year or so. I got a Wacom Bamboo Fun Graphics Tablet for my birthday, and never put it down. I am actually holding my stylus as I type these words.

I got into tee shirts be accident really, I was new to digital art and looking for some stuff to use, and came across the Go Media Arsenal Vector packs. I played with that a bit and was looking for a place to show off my new skills and came across Emptees. That lead to a lot of great people and opportunities including being invited to be a beta tester for Cameesa.

Who has inspired you and why, in both life and design?

My mom is also an artist, so she is my biggest fan and inspiration. If I were to list all the people it would reach the moon. I think there is no such thing as bad art, just underdeveloped or untapped potential. It doesn't take a genius to know what looks good. I think everyone has some hidden artist inside. Or at least a need or want to express something in some way, words drawing songs whatever it is.

What do you enjoy doing on your free time, other than designing?

I know it may sound strange but I really do draw all the time. From when I wake up to when I go to bed. The first thing I do is get on my computer and open up Adobe Illustrator and just make some squiggles and go from there. The only other then designing thing I do is the occasional trip to the Oregon Coast with my family, or camping with friends.

Favorites?

Book: The collected works of Edgar Allen Poe. It's a big book, I'm still working on it.

Movie: Trainspotting. One of the few movies I can watch over and over and enjoy every time.

Song: November Rain. Guns N' Roses (Ironically also my least listened to song. I don't want to spoil it you know)

Magazine: Cosmo Those quizzes crack me up.

Band: Aubyn Beth (http://myspace.com/aubynbeth) of course.

What do you currently do as a day job?

Remember that interest in the Performing Arts I have? As luck would have it I am happily employed as an Usher for the Portland Center for the Preforming Arts.
The best of both worlds so to speak.

What's the most fun you have had at work?

Like most jobs it's the people that you work with that make it great or not. My coworkers and boss's have always been polite and friendly, really makes to time fly by. I don't think I could go back to a 9 to 5. It's something different every night. Where else can I hear an orchestra, comedian, and band all in the same week.

What is your favorite part of a day and why?

Night, I am very Much a night owl. I like it better because it's quieter, helps me think.

How did you spend your $250 prize money that you won at Cameesa?

I am also a supporter as well as an artist. I bought a design for my own line of clothes. The store credit went to supporting my fellow artist.

You have been very involved with creating art for Cameesa members (ie. Aubyn Beth), how do you come up with these creative ideas? Is there a specific process? or just inspiration?

This first and most important part of any design starts with the client briefing. I don't like to stop and go that much once I get going on something so it's important that I am on the same page or at least in the same book as the client. Aubyn, Andy and Phil did a great job allowing me to come up with something.

It is always a given that the first idea is not the final idea, on my end it's a lot of revisions. That's ok, I often like to see how the idea grows as I am working on a project. I am happy with the final. I don't really see drawings as dollars and cents, This is what I like to do after all. Any paycheck is just icing on the cake. This is just the start, I look forward to what I can come up with. I try to be as approachable as possible. No art is bad art, No idea is a bad idea. Talk to me anytime.
How did you stumble upon Cameesa?

I found cameesa mentioned on emptees.com and thought I would see what the big deal was. I'm glad I did. It was slow going at first. The stuff I submitted wasn't really that great, and the response from the community was slow at times. I'm glad to see the site picking up steam. I have a feeling it's going to be a great year for cameesa. I read somewhere the first three years are the hardest. Here is to getting over the hump. Cheers Cameesa.

What advice do you have for existing and new Cameesa members/supporters?

There are No dumb ideas, No bad art. Don't be shy speak up. The great thing about cameesa is that you don't have to be a bigshot to be successful. What I mean is it only takes 50 friends as apposed to some other sites that take hundreds of votes to get noticed. The odds for a new artist are very good. Just ask, if you are new to art go for it. If you have something that's ready to go on a shirt, don't wait upload it now. If you have an idea for a shirt and can't draw that well that's fine too. Just ask. I would rather try and work with a supporter then just take a wild guess on a design.

What are you most proud of?

This life and my small part in it. I try to stay open to new possibilities and ideas. I am always curious to find what may be right around the bend.

Hello! I was just wondering if you had the ability to print UV (sun reactive) ink. This design that I had made a long time ago is something that Ive always wanted to see printed, but it wasn't received well.

The ink will look dull and blue when out of the sun (left image) and will show up vibrantly when in the sun (right image). Hey guys,

I am trying to do some re-organization on the site (ie. make the Community default link go to forums, etc.)

Our stats show that people click /support/highestSupportAmount twice as much as the default /support link. My question to you: wher would you like the default 'Support' button to go?
1. The assorted page (what it is today)
2. The highest support amount page.

I've had this idea for a while but have been procrastinating putting in the forum. I was afraid that no one would submit any designs. F**K that. I figured, we have some of the best artists in the world on Cameesa, we might as well use their skills to design the coolest Chicago T-shirt ever.

Living here for the last 9 years has made me realize that it's one of the coolest places ever. To those who have been to Chicago know what I am talking about. Those who have not, come visit me for a weekend in the summer and you'll never want to leave.

Here are the things I think of when I think of Chicago:
deep-dish pizza, blues, sports, politics, amazing sites (Sears Tower, the Bean, Navy Pier), memorable sports figures, the "L" (public transportation), museums, Lollapalooza.

I've seen so many cheesy tourist tees with plain designs pasted on the middle of the shirt. I know this is a difficult task, but please do not do this. This should be an artistic tee not a touristic Tee.

Maybe you have a different vision of Chicago? What is it? Express it in your design.

WIP support

I was thinking since we're trying to support artists to post their works in progress in the forum for feedback and whatnot I was thinking it could be worthwhile to create an entire portion of the site for this. Artists can post their work in progress designs (without out first needing to get the design approved but of course you reserve the right to remove offensive material) and people can make suggestions and just post their thoughts. The artist can then update the design as he goes until he's ready to submit it for support.

It'd be a great way for prepping designs and getting a feel for how much support a design could get before actually submitting it. As of now artists are essentially submitting their designs in the dark having no idea how much support the design would be able to muster. This would give them valuable feedback so that they can better support the community for the community to better support them. Afterall this site is all about allowing the community to cater to itself.

It would also create a centralized location for supporters to follow the work of their favorite artists and interact with them.

Kamil, you mentioned a little while back that you were looking for a third thing for people to do here at the site. I think this would definitely fit that bill. No other site has anything like it either. Think about an all in one community where artists can develop their concepts, gather supporters, and get their designs printed all on the same site. With a robust feature set it could be a really powerful tool in funneling more designs and supporters into the site.

What does everyone think? Artists, would you use something like this? What sort of features would you want? I just thought of this so its not a very fleshed out idea. It would be a big undertaking but I think it could be a really strong addition to the site and about a million times better than a simple forum thread would be. It could also provide the framework for much more structured design competitions like the current chicago one.

Shirt question: tag vs no tag

You guys may have noticed that we have been experimenting with different tag options for our shirts.

We have done:
1. Leave AA tag inside, no changes
2. Printed tag inside shirt and leave AA tag inside
3. Printed tag inside shirt and remove AA tag

*AA = American Apparel (the shirt we print on)

Which do you prefer? It seems that most people like having the custom tag printed inside the shirt, but there appears to be a debate between leaving in the AA tag and removing it. The argument is that people want to be reassured they are buying a real AA product.

Video Camera Question

Kamil and I taped the Fiction vs. Non-Fiction video review on my point and shoot digital camera. The quality turned out pretty crappy :(

I have been looking at smaller HD video cameras and am debating between the Flip Mino HD and the Kodak Zi6. I am leaning more towards the Zi6.

Do you guys have any recommendations? Should I get something completely different? I am looking to spend less than $200.

I would suggest these last two be something Cameesa does as a "brand" rather then individual artist.
The more eyes the better I say.

Advise for artist:
My experience is that it's better to introduce the product first with a personal "why I should win" description on day one. Then a reminder a few days later, and a "final push" message when the design is close. It takes about an hour or so to personalize it and do the rounds so to speak, but it's more effective then just spamming.

Think of this as your personal little fund raiser event.
Go get em.

Anyone else have any tips for promoting, ideas, sites I missed and the like.

I would love to hear them.

multiple support groups

I just tried out the new system and I'm very pleased. Well done. You coded that up surprisingly quickly.

There are some things that I noticed though.

First there needs to be an easy way to move a shirt from one group to another. Right now you need to unsupport the shirt and resupport it with the new group. Click and drag would be nice on the 'my supports' page but a button with a drop down list of the groups would work just as well.

Second when I support a shirt and I'm given the option to choose a group (or make a new one) there needs to be some more differentiation between the groups. Maybe list the shirts already in the group below the button. I just made two groups that have the same support amount and shirt size and there is no way for me to tell the difference between the groups at this step in the process. You may want to consider allowing the user to name their different groups or otherwise tag them to differentiate their purposes.

What does supporting a design get me?

+I get to choose a shirt in my preferred size before a single shirt is printed.

+My shirt comes with free shipping.

++*IF* down the road lots of other people decide "our" shirt is cool, I'll make a little money off each shirt sold.

When I first "arrived here" via the wonders of the internet, I saw a design I REALLY liked. I put $40 in my account and gave that shirt two supports. I received an email alterting me to the fact that my shirt design was going to be printed. (This means my two supports were used up.)

I came back to the support page. I have one support invested via the multi-support system. I added $20 to my account, then clicked on every design that I'd like to have one shirt. I can change my mind about what I want supported at any time, right up until one of my choices gets fully supported.

Kamil reports he is working on new methods for us to support "unevenly", as in one support for one AND two supports for another (if I understand correctly). I look forward to seeing that implemented.

Four shirts in the last fourteen days or so. Things are moving along.

I think what fiction/nonfiction has shown us is the ability for a well known artist to really draw people to the site and get the support needed. Alot of great designs like this one get left behind at other sites every day. If we can work to funnel some of those here then we can really start growing this site. Unfortunately i feel cameesa is still largely unknown to both artists and consumers. But people are joining every day. Even if its only three or four our community is growing. There just needs to be more talk, more blog posts, more websites with the name 'cameesa' on them.

So I took over the other one I made.
I'm going to start posting early stage work.

My workflow involves.
Reference renders using 3d models in Poser 7.

Then I do some composites, trying to get the basic idea, and proportions dialed in. ( I do a notes layer on top just where I think I'm going with the design, things I want to try and so on.) This goes off to the client as a rough sketch.

While I wait, I go ahead refining, doing the line work in Corel Painter X.

Once I get a go ahead I finish in Painter, add all the bells and whistles, fine details, and so on.

Off to the client again, talk shirt colors, ect.
get more feedback. make any changes, or..

I move over to Adobe illustrator, live trace my lines, fix gaps, and add color.

Make some mockups on shirts, and colorways, with some different options.

Nicely ask for money...and off it goes a new shirt is born.

Cameesa Dividend System

When we launched Cameesa, we assumed that people getting $0.03 for every t-shirt sold (of their supported design) would be a factor in promoting Cameesa. Unfortunately, we were wrong. Looking at our site stats, majority of supporters are not promoting designs that they are supporting, or have supported.

So, we are considering on removing the $0.03 dividend to the Supporters of the designs, and creating a new Dividend system.

In the new system, only the Supporters that refer others to support a design, or purchase something on the site would be rewarded. For example, you would post a link on your personal blog with your referral link, "http://cameesa.com/referrer/kamil", and if anyone clicked on this link and signed-up, supported or bought something, then you would be rewarded $$$.

Multi-design Support

So I, along with others, were frustrated because we liked many designs, but could only put in $20 per design.

We are considering on allowing a user to support many designs with their $20.

For example, I will be able to support Design A,B,C with my $20, and their amounts will rise to 80%, 80%, and 98%, respectively. Next, if James comes along and supports design C with $20 then it will be considered 100% supported, and designs A, B, percentages will be lowered to 78%, and 78% because my money went into Design C.

How does this sound, any other suggestions?

We have been doing some brainstorming about getting more Supporters onto Cameesa.com, and we thought that you may have some ideas.

So, the fundamental question is: How can we bring more Supporters to Cameesa.com?

Maybe some sites that we haven't heard of, or some blogs that we can contact?

As a designer to supporters. My views.

I would like to hear other designers views and get some feed back from supporters about the style of shirt you would like to put some money on. You are all my clients after all.

As a Designer, It's a real guessing game to know what folks will be into at any given time.

How about getting supporters involved before the designs, are up. Example. I (supporter) Think the perfect shirt would be...(fill in the black)
...a Gorilla with gold chains, in a top hat, or whatever. You may not have the illustration skills to make one yourself, but there are plenty of Designers that see this as challenge and would love to make the best gorilla shirt ever.

I would be much more willing to put the effort into a design if I know there are people that want it.
Cameesa is competing with clients, other sites with bigger payouts, and a Designers personal line of clothes.

So as a Designer I have to choose if it's worth "donating" a design to maybe get printed, Print it on my own, or sell it to a client outright.

As it stands now, I'm not willing to have a potential money making design sitting here at Camessa playing the guessing game.

So what do people look For in a Tee shirt these days...

(again this is just my view, other designers may feel differently and thats fine. I want to see this place get better for both, designers and supporters alike, I mean to offend no one)

Cameesa Logo Shirt Design Contest

We have been asked countless times if we have a Cameesa logo shirt for sale. So far we haven't, but that's about to change.

We are holding a little logo design competition, right here in this forum post. The winner gets $150 ($100 cash + $50 Cameesa cash).

The only guideline is that the design should have "Cameesa" somewhere in it.

[i]"While a design is in the support phase, you can support the design with 1 to 50 parts. The idea is to find something you know would look great and make it a reality...

You will only receive just one T-shirt regardless of the amount you Support."[/i]

What is the rationale behind receiving just one shirt? On his blog about Cameesa (which I found via the Cameesa blog, actually), Jon Turner writes the following:

"Cameesa also, shrewdly, offers the opportunity to essentially buy more than one "share" in a tee; by placing multiple pre-orders (say, purchasing for friends and family) you increase the chances of it printing and thus of ever being able to wear it. Customers (during the "voting" stage anyway) are being actively encouraged to consider ordering more than one tee, buying more than one slice, so that they can see their favourite designs printed, and wear them."

This view makes a lot of sense to me, but your FAQ seems to contradict it. Buying multiple shares does not equate to placing multiple pre-orders, so as it stands, I don't see much point in buying multiple shares of a shirt. Actually, I feel that the current system encourages users to create multiple accounts if they plan on buying multiples.

I realize that it isn't so simple, since giving a shirt for every share could be an invitation to abuse of the system. Maybe instead of just one shirt per supporter there could be some sort of cap? Shirt sites like shirt.woot, uneetee, teefury, etc. allow a maximum of three purchases per customer, so a cap of three free shirts (for three shares) would probably be enough for most people.

First of all, cameesa is a great idea. Something I've thought of myself -- I'm glad someone is doing it.

A couple practical money questions:

* If I "invest" in a shirt that doesn't get printed, my money is returned to my cameesa account and from there can only be used to support or buy other shirts -- not get my cash back?

* Same question for the use of investor returns -- cash or cameesa?

I think it was written somewhere that residuals don't kick in until after the first 250 shirts are sold. Are there any relevant details? For example - do shirts remain indefinitely available in the shop once fully supported, or is there a limited print run or time frame?

Here is an idea for a barrel print design. I'm mostly looking for advice on colors, but any other advice is appreciated. The print would be all one color. I was thinking khaki print over navy blue shirt, or turquise/cyan print on dark blue, dark grey print on a red shirt. I don't have photoshop so I can't open the color file in the template right now, but I will when I'm at school next week. Let me know what you all think. Thanks.

Shirt Choices

Hey guys,
I have a question on shirt decisions once something is fully supported. I have a couple shirt color choices in one of my designs, some other people are taking suggestions on placement and other small design changes. Once something is fully supported are you guys going to poll the supporters to see which shirt color/design placement works best? For example I like the charcoal colored shoulder print for the gears of war shirt, but a supporter might like one of the other colors and placements. Should there be a note on designs with multiple versions encouraging the supporters to comment on which one they like best, but also saying that they might not get their first shirt color choice once something is printed if a majority likes another color?
