Canon has officially announced its third lens of 2024, the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM, marking the smallest and lightest zoom lens in its RF lineup. Designed for both full-frame and APS-C EOS R-series mirrorless cameras, this versatile lens is equally suited for still photography and video. Its compact form factor, coupled with a bright f/2.8 aperture, makes it an appealing option for content creators seeking a high-quality, all-day imaging solution.

Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM Lens: $1,099 at B&H, Adorama.

The optical design of the lens is impressive, featuring 15 elements arranged in 12 groups, including two ultra-low dispersion (UD) elements and two aspherical elements. These components help deliver high image quality across the zoom range. One standout feature is the lens’s image stabilization (IS) system, which includes a newly designed IS unit. Canon claims that, when paired with a camera that has in-body image stabilization, the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM can provide up to 7.5 stops of stabilization at the center and 7.0 stops at the corners. Even on cameras without in-body stabilization, users can still benefit from 5.5 stops of stabilization.

The autofocus system is another area of innovation. Canon has implemented a new lead screw-type STM motor with a magnetic sensor to monitor and adjust the motor’s rotational speed. This design enhances both the speed and precision of autofocus while keeping focus breathing minimal, making it particularly useful for video applications.

Despite not being part of Canon’s L-series, the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 offers weather-resistant construction comparable to L-series lenses. Canon has positioned this lens as a “new standard zoom lens,” suitable for everyday use and travel. It is an attractive option for photographers looking to upgrade from a kit lens without investing in larger, more expensive alternatives like the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 or those seeking a faster aperture than the RF 24-105mm f/4.

Priced at $1,099, the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM is expected to be available for purchase this month.

Nikon has officially announced the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.4, a fast prime lens designed for Z-mount cameras that covers the classic 50mm focal length. This new addition complements the recently released Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.4, sharing the same dimensions—87mm in length and 75mm in diameter—and weighing only slightly more at 420g (14.8 oz). Despite the similarities, the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.4 is priced slightly lower than Nikon’s own 50mm f/1.8 S lens, suggesting a different approach to design philosophy.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.4 Lens (Nikon Z) at B&H, Adorama.

Key Features

Full-Frame | f/1.4

Fast, Lightweight Walkaround Prime

STM Autofocus Stepping Motor

Minimum Focusing Distance: 14.5″

Customizable Clickless Control Ring

Weather-Sealed Construction

The new lens is built with 10 elements in 7 groups, including one aspherical element, and features a 9-bladed aperture. This optical design is simpler than the 50mm f/1.8 S lens, as it lacks the Nano Crystal Coating found in the premium model. With a minimum focus distance of 0.37m (14.5 inches) and a maximum magnification ratio of 0.17x, it offers versatility in various shooting scenarios. The lens also includes a manual focus ring and a customizable control ring, which are not found in the ‘S’ version.

The Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.4 is geared toward both photography and videography, thanks to its smooth twin STM motors, minimized focus breathing, and a clickless control ring—features that make it particularly suitable for video work. Nikon has designed the lens to be drip and dust-resistant, ensuring durability in challenging conditions. With a suggested retail price of $499, the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.4 is expected to be available in late September.

Canon has officially unveiled the EOS C80, a new cinema camera designed to cater to filmmakers and video producers seeking a balance between professional-grade video quality and the compact form factor of a mirrorless camera. The C80 is built around a 26-megapixel full-frame stacked CMOS sensor and utilizes Canon’s RF lens mount. According to Canon, the internal components of the EOS C80 closely resemble those of the recently released Cinema EOS C400, including an almost identical sensor. However, the C80 lacks some of the high-end features found on its more expensive sibling, the C400.

Canon EOS C80 Cinema Camera: $5,499 at B&H, Adorama.

Replacing the EOS C70: A Step Forward in Full-Frame Cinematography

The EOS C80 is positioned as the successor to the EOS C70, a camera that gained popularity among independent filmmakers and small production studios. Unlike the C70, which featured a Super 35mm sensor and required an EF-to-RF 0.71x optical adapter to boost speed, the C80 offers a native full-frame experience. This change is expected to attract users who prefer the larger sensor format for its wider field of view and shallower depth of field, delivering more cinematic footage.

Advanced Sensor Technology: 6K Resolution and Triple-Base ISO

The EOS C80 is equipped with a stacked CMOS sensor capable of capturing video in up to 6K resolution. The sensor features a unique triple-base ISO design with base settings at ISO 800, 3200, and 12,800. This design employs dual gain systems that alternate between two different readout paths, each optimized for different shooting conditions. One mode is tailored for high dynamic range situations with a larger signal tolerance, while the other prioritizes low noise in dimly lit environments. Canon has also introduced a third readout option that extends this trade-off, although the specifics of this third mode have not been fully disclosed. Canon has been contacted for further technical details, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.

Improved Autofocus and Tracking: Dual Pixel AF II

One of the key upgrades in the EOS C80 is the implementation of Canon’s latest autofocus technology, Dual Pixel AF II. This enhanced system expands the area of the sensor available for autofocus, providing more precise and reliable tracking. The autofocus zones are identical to those found in the Cinema EOS C400, allowing for advanced people and animal tracking capabilities. The faster readout speed of the new sensor further enhances the autofocus system’s responsiveness.

The autofocus system also introduces an innovative feature that simplifies racking focus between subjects. When the AF system is tracking a person, manually turning the focus ring on the lens allows for manual focus control. If the system detects a focus shift toward a different subject, it will automatically take over the focus tracking once the focus ring is released. This feature is designed to provide more intuitive control, particularly in dynamic shooting scenarios.

Connectivity and Usability Enhancements

Canon has also improved the connectivity and usability of the EOS C80, adding features that enhance its versatility in various production environments. The camera includes 12G-SDI terminals for uncompressed video output, a full-sized HDMI-out port, and an ethernet terminal for networked control. It is equipped with two mini XLR audio inputs, a 3.5mm microphone jack, and support for four-channel audio, ensuring high-quality audio recording options. Additionally, the camera includes Canon’s multi-function shoe for mounting accessories, a lightweight handle accessory, and multiple 1/4″-20 tripod threads for flexible mounting options.

The EOS C80 maintains the same ND filter system as the Cinema EOS C400, offering five levels of neutral density ranging from ND2 to ND10. This system provides the ability to quickly adapt to varying lighting conditions. Canon has also added a practical tape measure hook on top of the camera to aid in precise focus measurement and planning.

Versatile Video Codec Support and Recording Capabilities

The EOS C80 supports three sets of video codecs, including those found on the Cinema EOS C400, the EOS R1, and the EOS R5 Mark II. This alignment of codecs across Canon’s EOS line suggests a deliberate effort to unify video capabilities across its cinema and mirrorless cameras, making it easier for professionals to switch between different models within the ecosystem.

The C80 can record up to 6K/30p video using the full width of its sensor, or 4K/60p using a Super 35mm crop when utilizing Canon’s Cinema RAW LT (‘light’) codec. Unlike some of its higher-end counterparts, the C80 does not support Canon’s more demanding Cinema RAW formats (HQ and ST), which require write speeds beyond the capabilities of the C80’s dual SD (UHS-II) memory card slots.

Additionally, the camera offers several compressed codec options, including Canon’s XF-AVC, XF-HEVC S, and XF-AVC S, which support up to 4K/60p (downsampled from 6K) in 4:2:2 10-bit color, using either All-I or Long-GOP formats. For slow-motion enthusiasts, the C80 provides frame rate support up to 4K/120p and 2K/180p, with autofocus capabilities maintained up to 120p. The camera also includes Canon’s C-Log2 and C-Log3 gamma curves and supports proxy file creation for streamlined workflows.

Additional Features: Anamorphic Support and Vertical Video Interface

The EOS C80 goes beyond standard video capture, offering support for anamorphic lenses with 2.0x, 1.8x, and 1.3x de-squeeze options. This feature caters to filmmakers who prefer the distinctive look and feel of anamorphic footage. A new vertical interface has also been added, allowing for more user-friendly vertical video shooting, a growing trend in social media content creation.

Battery Life and Power Options

The C80 introduces two new battery models: the BP-A30N and BP-A60N. The BP-A30N, which ships with the camera, provides up to 170 minutes of continuous recording, while the BP-A60N offers up to 335 minutes. Canon assures that the previous non-N versions of these batteries remain compatible, although they will deliver slightly shorter operating times.

Pricing and Availability

The Canon EOS C80 is priced at $5,499 and is expected to be available in November 2024. With its combination of a full-frame sensor, versatile recording options, and professional features in a compact body, the EOS C80 is set to become a compelling choice for filmmakers and content creators looking for high-end performance without the bulk of traditional cinema cameras.

In summary, the Canon EOS C80 represents a significant step forward for Canon’s Cinema EOS line, bridging the gap between compact mirrorless and full-fledged cinema cameras. With its advanced sensor technology, enhanced autofocus capabilities, and comprehensive connectivity options, the C80 is well-positioned to meet the diverse needs of today’s filmmakers and video producers.

DJI, a leading name in the drone industry, has recently unveiled its newest product, the DJI Neo. This lightweight, compact drone, priced at an accessible $199, is designed to revolutionize how we capture everyday moments. Weighing just 135 grams (4.76 ounces), the DJI Neo is the company’s lightest and most compact drone to date, making it an ideal tool for vlogging, capturing family moments, leisure activities, and even recording pets in action. This drone offers a fresh perspective on day-to-day life by enabling users to shoot cinematic content effortlessly, both indoors and outdoors.

Design and Portability

One of the most notable features of the DJI Neo is its ultra-lightweight design. At just 135 grams, it is incredibly easy to carry around, allowing users to take it with them wherever they go. The small size and light weight also mean that it can take off from and land on the palm of your hand without the need for a remote controller. This feature is especially convenient for those who are new to drone flying, as it eliminates the need for complex controls and makes the process of capturing footage much more intuitive.

The Neo’s compact size also means that it is less intimidating for beginners or those who are not familiar with flying drones. The ease of handling, combined with its portability, makes the DJI Neo a perfect choice for anyone looking to dip their toes into the world of drone photography and videography without committing to a larger, more expensive device.

Camera and Video Capabilities

Despite its small size, the DJI Neo does not compromise on camera quality. It is equipped with a Type 1/2 sensor that can capture 12MP images and record video in 4K at 30 frames per second. For those who prefer shooting in Full HD, the Neo can also record 1080p video at up to 60 frames per second. The camera features a 14mm full-frame equivalent F2.8 lens, providing a wide field of view that is perfect for capturing expansive landscapes or large group shots.

The DJI Neo also comes with advanced stabilization features, including RockSteady and HorizonBalancing. These modes use electronic image stabilization to ensure that your footage remains smooth and stable, even in moderately windy conditions. When these stabilization features are activated, the video is cropped to a 16:9 aspect ratio, making it ideal for sharing on social media platforms. Additionally, the drone’s single-axis gimbal (which allows for up/down movement) further aids in keeping the footage steady, enhancing the overall quality of the video captured.

User-Friendly Features

DJI has designed the Neo with ease of use in mind. One of the standout features is its AI-powered subject tracking. The drone can automatically follow the user, keeping them in the frame even if they are moving quickly, whether on a skateboard, bicycle, or just walking around. This hands-free operation makes it an ideal tool for vloggers and content creators who want to capture dynamic footage without needing a second person to operate the drone.

The Neo also offers various automated shooting modes known as ‘QuickShots.’ These include preset maneuvers like circling around the subject or zooming straight up into the sky while keeping the subject in the center of the frame. These QuickShots can be easily selected using the drone’s dedicated button or through the companion app, which also allows for voice control and virtual joystick operation. The app is also where users can preview footage, export it to social media, and even record audio using their phone’s microphone.

For those who prefer more traditional controls, DJI offers an optional controller for the Neo. However, it’s important to note that this drone is not intended to replace more advanced models like the DJI Mavic or DJI Mini. The Neo’s range is limited to about 50 meters (164 feet), making it suitable for close-range photography and videography but not for more extensive or professional applications.

Safety and Accessories

Safety is a crucial consideration when flying drones, especially indoors. To address this, DJI has included removable propeller guards with the Neo, allowing it to be used safely inside. While these guards are beneficial for protecting both the drone and the environment around it, users should be aware that they may slightly reduce the flight time, which is already capped at 18 minutes on a full charge.

Additionally, the DJI Neo is available in a Fly More Combo, which includes extra accessories to enhance the user experience. These accessories are designed to extend the drone’s capabilities and make it easier to capture stunning visuals, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced drone pilot.

Potential Challenges Ahead

While the DJI Neo presents an exciting new option for drone enthusiasts, potential buyers, particularly in the United States, should be aware of the ongoing legislative issues that could impact DJI’s products. The U.S. Congress is currently considering the ‘Countering CCP Drones Act,’ which, if passed, could effectively ban DJI’s drones in the country. This bill suggests that DJI’s products pose a risk to U.S. national security, although DJI has countered these claims by releasing a document addressing what it describes as inaccuracies in the public domain.

For those outside the United States or those who are willing to take a chance, the DJI Neo promises to be a fun and innovative tool for capturing life’s moments from a fresh perspective. However, regardless of where you are, it’s important to familiarize yourself with local drone regulations to ensure that you are flying safely and legally.

Conclusion

In summary, the DJI Neo is a groundbreaking addition to DJI’s lineup of drones, offering an accessible, user-friendly option for capturing cinematic footage. Its lightweight, compact design, coupled with advanced features like 4K video recording, AI subject tracking, and electronic image stabilization, makes it an excellent choice for casual users and content creators alike. Despite potential challenges in the U.S. market, the Neo is set to make waves in the world of drone photography and videography, offering a unique blend of portability, ease of use, and high-quality imaging at an affordable price point.

GoPro has unveiled its latest action camera, the Hero13 Black, which comes packed with innovative features and new accessories that take flexibility and creativity to new levels. In addition to hardware upgrades, the Hero13 Black introduces a series of accessory lenses, including an anamorphic lens, ND filters, and new mounting accessories, designed to enhance video quality and expand creative possibilities for content creators.

Hero13 Black: New Features and Accessories

Building on the strong foundation of previous models, the GoPro Hero13 Black retains several hallmark features, such as the highly regarded HyperSmooth image stabilization technology and the ability to capture stunning 5.3K video at 60 frames per second. The camera is built around the same 1/1.9-inch (6.3 x 5.5mm) CMOS sensor, which continues to deliver exceptional image quality. However, it’s the new accessory lenses that will likely steal the spotlight, providing users with unparalleled flexibility and creative control.

GoPro has announced three new HB-series lenses—presumably an acronym for “Hero Black”—alongside a 4-pack of ND filters. The lenses and filters feature automatic detection when attached to the camera, allowing for optimal settings based on the lens type and environment. Each lens is waterproof and scratch-resistant, ensuring durability in challenging shooting conditions.

The Ultra Wide Lens Mod captures an ultra-wide 177-degree field of view in a 1:1 aspect ratio, giving users the freedom to crop video for either horizontal or vertical formats. This lens also supports 360-degree Horizon Lock at up to 4K/60p, ensuring that the horizon remains level even if the camera rotates—a perfect solution for action-packed shots where maintaining a stable horizon is key.

For close-up photography, the Macro Lens Mod allows users to focus on objects four times closer than the standard GoPro lens. It features a variable focus ring for manual focusing to a close distance of just 11 centimeters (4.3 inches), making it ideal for capturing intricate details in nature, product photography, or other creative applications.

The Anamorphic Lens Mod brings a cinematic touch to GoPro’s offering by capturing footage in a wide 21:9 aspect ratio, similar to what is used in CinemaScope. This lens also adds a distinctive cinematic lens flare effect to footage, enhancing the aesthetic appeal. The Hero13 Black supports in-camera de-squeezing, which allows users to capture, review, and edit anamorphic footage without the need for additional steps in post-processing.

The ND-Filter 4-pack includes four neutral density filters (ND4, ND8, ND16, and ND32), which are also automatically detected by the camera. When an ND filter is attached, the Hero13 Black switches to Auto Cinematic video mode and automatically selects the best settings based on the shooting environment.

Camera Enhancements and Performance Upgrades

Beyond the accessory lenses, the Hero13 Black introduces several notable upgrades to the camera itself. One of the most exciting features is the 13x Burst Slo-Mo mode, which supports capture at 720p/400 frames per second or 5.3K/120 frames per second, offering stunning slow-motion playback. Additionally, the Hero13 Black includes “professional-level” Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) video, which uses the broadcast-standard 10-bit Rec.2100 color space to deliver a broader color gamut, giving users access to richer colors and more dynamic range in their footage.

Audio has also seen a significant upgrade with customizable tuning options. Users can now select between a balanced, “true-to-life” sound or a dedicated voice setting that enhances vocal clarity—perfect for vloggers and content creators who need to prioritize voice over background noise. The camera also integrates GPS + Performance Stickers, which track speed, path, terrain, altitude, and g-force, providing valuable data that can be overlaid on videos or used for geotagging in third-party media management apps.

The Hero13 Black is powered by a new 1900mAh battery, which offers a 10% increase in capacity and improved power efficiency. This enhancement translates to longer recording times: up to 1.5 hours of continuous recording at 5K/30p or 4K/30p, and over 2.5 hours at 1080p/30p. Faster Wi-Fi 6 technology is also included, enabling 40% faster data transfers with compatible devices.

The introduction of a new Snap and Go magnetic latch mounting system provides users with a third mounting option, alongside the built-in mounting fingers and 1/4″-20 tripod thread, further expanding the camera’s versatility.

Introducing the Compact Hero Camera

Alongside the Hero13 Black, GoPro has announced a second camera, simply branded as the Hero. Described as the “smallest, lightest, simplest to use, and lowest-cost 4K camera with a screen,” the Hero weighs only 86 grams (3 ounces)—46% lighter than the Hero13 Black and with a 35% smaller volume. It features a touchscreen and a single-button design, capturing up to 4K/30p or 2.7K/60p video and 12MP photos.

Despite its compact size, the Hero includes GoPro’s HyperSmooth image stabilization technology, ensuring smooth video capture. It is waterproof up to 5 meters (16 feet) and can run for up to 100 minutes on a single charge.

Pricing and Availability

The Hero13 Black is available in several configurations, including a camera-only option priced at $399. The Hero13 Black Creator Edition, which includes a Volta Power Grip, Media Mod, and Light Mod, is available for $599. Activity-optimized bundles are also available on GoPro’s website. All configurations are open for pre-order and are expected to ship and be in retail stores by September 10.

The Ultra Wide Lens Mod ($99), Macro Lens Mod ($129), and ND filter 4-pack ($69) are available for pre-order and will also be available on September 10. The Anamorphic Lens Mod ($129) is expected to ship in 2025.

New accessories, including the Contacto Magnetic Door and Power Cable kit ($79), Magnetic Latch ($25), and Ball Joint mount ($40), are also available for pre-order.

The compact Hero camera is priced at $199 and is available for pre-order now, with shipping expected to begin on September 22.

Conclusion

Sigma has officially announced the launch of its new 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary wide-angle APS-C lens for Canon’s RF mount. This marks the second APS-C lens and the second third-party lens that Canon has licensed for its RF system, expanding the options for photographers using models such as the Canon EOS R10 and R7. The lens, designed to provide a bright, wide-to-ultrawide perspective, offers a field of view equivalent to a 16-29mm lens on a full-frame camera, making it a compelling choice for Canon shooters seeking a faster aperture than Canon’s own RF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-6.3 IS, priced at $329.

Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens (Canon-RF): $659 at B&H, Adorama.

The Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 is built with 13 elements in 10 groups, including three ‘F’ low dispersion elements, one super low dispersion element, and four aspherical lenses, ensuring sharp and clear images with reduced chromatic aberrations. It also features seven rounded diaphragm blades and accepts 67mm filters, providing versatility for different shooting situations. Weighing in at 270 grams (9.5 oz), the lens is slightly heavier than its counterparts for L-mount and X-mount systems. It has a compact design, measuring 72.2mm (2.8 inches) in width and 62mm (2.4 inches) in length at its shortest, and extends slightly when zoomed to 10mm.

Sigma has also announced that its four DC DN f/1.4 prime lenses — the 16mm, 23mm, 30mm, and 56mm — will soon be available for the RF mount. The 10-18mm f/2.8 lens will be released in late September 2024 at a recommended price of $659.

Pricing and availability of SIGMA 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary for Canon RF Mount announced

Ronkonkoma, NY – September 5, 2024 – SIGMA Corporation of America, the US subsidiary of SIGMA Corporation (CEO: Kazuto Yamaki. Headquarters: Asao-ku, Kawasaki-shi, Kanagawa, Japan) is pleased to announce the pricing and availability of the SIGMA 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary for the Canon EOS R camera system.

Originally announced in October 2023, this lens was first released concurrently for L-Mount, Sony E-mount and Fujifilm X Mount, and is now available for Canon RF Mount. This compact, versatile zoom is a perfect partner for the SIGMA 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary which was released for Canon RF Mount in June 2024. The new lens will be available through authorized retail partners in late September 2024 for a retail price of $659.

This is the world’s smallest and lightest F2.8 zoom lens designed for APS-C format mirrorless systems*. On the Canon system, the lens covers a 16-28.8mm (35mm equivalent) focal range, with a fast F2.8 constant aperture. Paired with the 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary, this duo of lenses covers a 16-80mm (35mm equivalent) range with the same bright F2.8 maximum aperture, with a combined weight of under 550g (19.5 oz.)

The SIGMA 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary uses an aspherical concave lens with a large polarization ratio and high refractive index in the first group, reducing the number of elements in the first group and shortening the overall length. Additionally, a new push-on petal type hood has been developed. Thanks to the new structure with a spring and lever which is not utilized by any other manufacturer, the hood has been made both thinner and smaller, which also contributes to the overall compactness of the lens.

The optical design of the lens delivers a short 11.6cm (4.6 in.) minimum focusing distance and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4 at the wide end, allowing for close-up photography with pleasing background separation. The optical design also minimizes focus breathing, and the autofocus system delivers swift, quiet AF during both still and video use.

Thanks to its high optical quality and compact size, the SIGMA 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary lens is an excellent choice for travelers, adventure photographers, vloggers, and family photographers who want great image quality when paired with today’s leading lightweight crop-sensor cameras on multiple platforms.

A control algorithm including AF drive and communication speed optimization has been developed specifically for Canon RF Mount interchangeable lenses. In addition to realizing high-speed AF, the lens also supports Servo AF and in-camera aberration correction*2. The mount is rubber-sealed to cater for use in a variety of environments.

Mount Conversion Service is available to convert other mounts of SIGMA 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary to Canon RF Mount.

[ Features ]

Large-aperture, ultra-wide-angle zoom with expressive imaging capabilities

By utilizing unique optics which have been designed to correct lens aberrations, the SIGMA 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary produces images that are sharp across the entire image.

Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens (L-Mount): $1,499 at B&H, Adorama.

The lens construction consists of 18 elements arranged in 13 groups, featuring two fluorite-like low dispersion (FLD) elements, one super low dispersion (SLD) element, and five aspherical lenses. These elements work together to minimize chromatic aberrations and ensure high image quality across the frame. The front element is coated with a water- and oil-repellent layer, while the overall design of the lens is dust- and splash-resistant, making it suitable for various shooting conditions.

For videographers, the lens includes several features tailored to their needs. Sigma has integrated a ‘High-response Linear Actuator’ autofocus motor that promises quick and silent autofocus performance, which is particularly beneficial for video work. The company also highlights the lens’s minimal focus breathing, a feature that prevents changes in framing when adjusting focus, further enhancing its appeal to video creators.

Weighing in at 995 grams (35.1 ounces) for the L-mount version, the 28-105mm is about 34% heavier than Sigma’s comparable 24-70mm F2.8 lens for the same mount. This added weight may be justified for those who often find themselves needing a bit more reach, although the extra heft might be a drawback for photographers who prefer wider focal lengths, like the popular 24mm.

In hands-on testing, the relatively uncommon 28-105mm focal length proved to be highly versatile for everyday shooting. However, some users might miss the wider end provided by a 24-70mm lens, particularly in landscape or architecture photography. The lens also offers a tactile experience with various physical controls, including an aperture ring that can be switched between clicked and clickless modes, a zoom lock, and two AFL buttons. Additionally, there is a switch for toggling between autofocus and manual focus.

While Sigma markets the lens as “surprisingly compact” with a length of 157.9mm (6.2 inches), the lens extends by about 38mm (1.5 inches) when zoomed. It has a minimum focusing distance of 40cm (15.8 inches), which is somewhat distant compared to other 24-70mm f/2.8 lenses on the market. The 82mm filter thread accommodates a range of filters and accessories.

The Sigma 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN Art lens is set to launch in late September with a retail price of $1,499. Given its blend of focal length versatility, robust construction, and features tailored for both photography and videography, it could become a popular choice for users looking to expand their creative possibilities.

Ronkonkoma, NY – September 5, 2024 – SIGMA Corporation of America, the US subsidiary of SIGMA Corporation (CEO: Kazuto Yamaki. Headquarters: Asao-ku, Kawasaki-shi, Kanagawa, Japan) is pleased to announce the SIGMA 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN | Art zoom lens for full-frame mirrorless camera systems. Spanning many popular focal lengths in a single fast-aperture zoom, this is an exciting addition to the product line.

The SIGMA 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN | Art is a surprisingly compact, full-frame, wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens with a fast constant aperture. Available for Sony E-mount and L-Mount, this lens covers several popular focal lengths from 28mm to 105mm, including the very popular 85mm focal length for portraiture, remaining at F2.8 through the entire range.

Featuring HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) autofocus, and optical performance that lives up to the standard of Art line lenses, the SIGMA 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN | Art joins SIGMA’s selection of fast-aperture zoom lenses in the Art line, offering photographers and videographers a variety of premium standard zoom options depending on their personal style. Like the 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN II | Art and the 28-45mm F2.8 DG DN | Art, the new 28-105mm F2.8 includes a lockable aperture ring with click/declick function, as well as two AFL buttons and a zoom lock switch. Additionally, the dust- and splash-resistant design and water-and oil-repellant coating on the front element makes it suitable for shooting both stills and video in inclement weather.

A minimum focusing distance of 15.8 inches (40cm) at all focal lengths, and maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.1 at the telephoto end add to the versatility of this new zoom lens. This lens also features a rounded twelve-blade diaphragm, which helps to keep the large-aperture unit as small as possible.

Measures have been taken to minimize changes in optical performance due to differences in zoom and focus positions, including the use of a difficult-to-process large-diameter FLD glass in the first group to suppress aberrations in each group. In addition, the use of 5 aspherical lens elements has enabled the lens to achieve both a wide zoom range of 28mm to 105mm and a large-aperture of F2.8, while reducing its overall size.

By thoroughly reducing the weight of each part, the lens is kept under 2 pounds while achieving both a wide zoom range and an F2.8 aperture. The lens barrel near the mount is made of magnesium rather than aluminum, ensuring rigidity while reducing the weight of these parts alone by two-thirds. The lens will retail for $1,499 and will be available in late September 2024.

#SIGMA #SIGMA28105mmF28Art #SIGMAArt #SIGMAArtZoom #SIGMADGDN

Harness the power of this versatile and portable F2.8 optic with an extended 28-105mm focal range – a standard zoom that goes well beyond standard.

The SIGMA 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN | Art is not just another standard zoom lens. With a powerful wide-angle to medium telephoto focal length and a bright F2.8 aperture throughout, this full-frame mirrorless zoom combines outstanding optical performance, superb build quality and a range of pro-grade features to make it one of the most versatile optics on the market for mirrorless systems.

The lens is built to tackle a huge range of subjects and situations, from expansive low-light landscapes to portraits with big, beautiful bokeh, and thanks to SIGMA’s latest optical technology and the use of large diameter elements including FLD, SLD and five aspherical elements, it is able to do so with superb clarity and sharpness. This allows the lens to deliver exceptional versatility without compromising on optical quality. The lens also includes high-speed AF with HLA technology, a rugged dust- and splash-resistant structure, and various functions such as an aperture ring, all packed into a compact and lightweight body weighing less than 1kg, making it an exceptional all-round choice for both stills and video.

[Key Features]

1. Constant F2.8 aperture across a versatile 28-105mm zoom

Many conventional zoom lenses which have a reach up to 105mm do not offer a constant F2.8 aperture, usually dropping to F4 at the long end. But the SIGMA 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN | Art delivers the same impressive light-gathering and depth-of-field benefits across the whole focal range. The lens offers all of this along with extremely high optical performance thanks to the thorough suppression of optical aberrations within each lens group. And with its outstanding close-focusing capability when zoomed in, macro-style results are also possible.

A versatile F2.8 aperture perfect for portraits and low light

With its fast aperture across the whole focal range, the SIGMA 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN | Art is a true workhorse lens that can be used for almost any type of photography. Scenic photographers can shoot wide-angle landscapes, using the F2.8 aperture for low-light scenes and twilight urban views, while the middle focal lengths tackle dimly lit documentary and street subjects, allowing shutter speeds one stop faster than comparable lenses. At the long end, popular portrait focal lengths from 85mm and 105mm, combined with the F2.8 maximum aperture, produce a shallow depth-of-field that will isolate a subject impressively against large and beautiful bokeh.

Fill the frame with superb close-up performance

Achieving a minimum focus distance of just 40cm across its entire zoom range, the SIGMA 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN | Art can get you closer to your subject, filling the frame with detail and texture. At its 105mm setting, this creates a very useful maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.1 for powerful macro-style results.

Superior optical performance across the full zoom and focus range

The SIGMA 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN | Art operates without compromise, suppressing aberrations very effectively within each lens group, and throughout the entire zoom and focal range. This ensures the lens has a consistent performance even with such a long zoom range. This is thanks to the lens’s premium optical design, which includes two FLD, one SLD and five aspherical elements, the first grouping of which uses a large-diameter 66.4mm element that is extremely difficult to produce and only available thanks to SIGMA’s advanced manufacturing technology at its sole production base in Aizu, Japan.

Designed to minimize flare and ghosting

Using advanced simulation technology, flare and ghosting have been largely eliminated, ensuring that the lens renders rich, high-contrast results in all conditions. In addition, SIGMA’s Nano Porous Coating and Super Multi-Layer Coating have been applied to further suppress flare and ghosting.

Minimal focus breathing

Vital for filmmakers who demand consistent framing, the lens has been designed to keep focus breathing to a minimum. This ensures that any changes to the angle-of-view due to focus shift are minimized across the entire zoom range, ensuring natural-looking focus pulls when recording video, and easier image alignment when focus stacking.

2. Superb portability thanks to a weight of less than 1kg

Standard zooms should be small and light enough for all-day hand-held shooting, so the SIGMA 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN | Art has been designed with portability in mind. It combines five aspherical elements effectively in place to shorten the overall length, and a magnesium-alloy construction around the mount, keeping the weight of the lens to less than 1kg. This ensures the lens has superb portability similar to shorter standard zoom lenses, while providing a wider zoom range.

Excellent optical performance in a streamlined body

By using five aspherical elements in its optical construction, SIGMA has succeeded in significantly shortening the lens’s total length without any compromise to sharpness and image quality. This advanced configuration was only made possible by continuous technological innovation and cutting-edge manufacturing processes at SIGMA’s sole production base in Aizu, Japan.

Smarter design means lower weight

Constant F2.8 zoom lenses can be heavy, but by optimizing the design and materials of each part of the SIGMA 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN | Art, SIGMA has achieved a remarkably light weight of less than 1kg. The use of magnesium-alloy rather than aluminum for the lens barrel around the mount has reduced the weight of these parts alone by two-thirds, while ensuring rigidity.

3. Professional features, fast AF and excellent build quality

In addition to high-speed AF delivered by its linear motor HLA (High-response Linear Actuator), the SIGMA 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN | Art packs in a range of features that help deliver the best possible results in every shooting situation. These include a dust- and splash-resistant structure and water- and oil-repellent coating, as well as a zoom lock switch, a de-clickable aperture ring, AFL buttons and the focus ring for easier handling including shooting with MF.

A linear motor HLA for rapid and accurate AF

The lens incorporates a linear motor HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) that delivers a maximum drive speed, ensuring responsive, precise and smooth AF. With its high level of quietness, the motor also provides noise-free video capability.

An aperture ring for improved ergonomics

For quick changes to exposure, or a more traditional way of shooting, the lens is equipped with a dedicated aperture ring, allowing the user to change aperture via the lens if preferred. An aperture ring click switch is a useful tool for film-makers, and a lock switch helps ensure the aperture ring is not knocked out of its setting accidentally.

Two AFL buttons* for added customization

Located on the side and on top of the barrel, two customizable AFL buttons can easily be reached in either horizontal or vertical shooting positions, ensuring more ergonomic handling.

* Assignment of functions is limited to supported cameras and assignable functions vary depending on the camera.

Zoom lock switch to keep the zoom ring secure

The lens is equipped with a zoom lock switch that holds the zoom mechanism in place at its wide end, preventing it from extending unintentionally under its own weight when carried. The lock can be released by the switch, or by turning the zoom ring for a faster and more flexible workflow.

Weather-resistant structure for challenging conditions

The lens has a dust- and splash-resistant structure* that keeps it free of contaminants in harsh outdoor environments. The front element also features a water- and oil-repellent coating that helps keep it clean in adverse shooting conditions.

* The structure is designed to be dust- and splash-resistant, but not waterproof. Be careful not to bring the lens in contact with a large amount of water. Water inside the lens may cause major damage and even render the lens unrepairable.

Petal-type hood

A dedicated petal-shaped hood is supplied. A locking mechanism is provided for secure attachment.

[ Additional Features ]

Nikon is rumored to announce new products in September and October, and one of the anticipated models is a successor to the Nikon Z50. The original Z50, a Z-mount APS-C (DX) mirrorless camera, was released in November 2019, and given the passage of time, a successor announcement seems imminent.

The first rumored specifications for the Nikon Z50 II suggest several interesting updates. The camera is expected to feature a revised body design and the new Expeed 7 processor, which could bring improved performance and image quality. It will likely have a flippy screen similar to the one on the Z6 III, enhancing its appeal to vloggers and content creators. The Z50 II is also rumored to include a USB-C port for faster data transfer and charging capabilities. Notably, the camera is expected to retain the Nikon EN-EL25 battery, the same as its predecessor, suggesting continuity in battery life and compatibility with existing accessories.

The official announcement of the Nikon Z50 II is anticipated before the end of 2024. However, there is uncertainty regarding the camera’s sensor. It is speculated that the Z50 II might use the same 20.9MP DX-format CMOS sensor as the original Z50, although there is hope that Nikon will introduce a new sensor to keep up with competitors like Fujifilm, which has already implemented a 40MP sensor in its latest X100VI camera.

There are indications that the Nikon Z50 II will not offer a battery grip, aligning with its positioning as an entry- to mid-range model. Unlike high-end APS-C cameras, which typically include a battery grip to support extended shooting sessions, the Z50 series has never featured one, and this trend seems likely to continue.

One notable addition to the Nikon Z50 II could be its compatibility with the Nikon Imaging Cloud, a service that allows images taken with Nikon cameras to be transferred seamlessly to various cloud services and automatically updates the camera’s firmware. Currently, only the Z6 III is compatible with this service, but Nikon has plans to expand support to more models, including the Z50 II.

Interestingly, there have been no significant discounts on the current Nikon Z50 model, suggesting that price reductions may occur soon, possibly coinciding with the announcement of the Z50 II.

Tamron has officially announced the 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD lens for Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras, marking an exciting expansion in Tamron’s lineup of versatile ultra-telephoto zoom lenses. Known for its sleek design, portability, and impressive zoom range, this lens is set to become a go-to choice for photographers specializing in landscapes, wildlife, sports, and portraiture. Its 8x zoom ratio, starting at 50mm, positions it uniquely among other telephoto zoom lenses, offering both versatility and performance in a remarkably compact package.

Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD Lens (Nikon Z): $1,299 at B&H, Adorama.

The Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD lens, originally released for Sony E-mount in 2022, now finds its way to Nikon Z-series mirrorless cameras, catering to full-frame and APS-C formats. On full-frame cameras, the lens covers a focal length range from 50mm to 400mm, making it suitable for a wide variety of shooting scenarios, from close portraits to distant wildlife and sports action. On APS-C cameras, the lens delivers an equivalent focal length of 75-600mm, further enhancing its long-range capabilities.

One of the standout features of this lens is its compact and lightweight design. Measuring only 7.2 inches in length and weighing about 2.6 pounds, it offers the same level of portability as conventional 100-400mm zoom lenses. This makes it an excellent companion for travel, wildlife, and outdoor photographers who need a powerful zoom lens without the bulk traditionally associated with such focal ranges.

Optically, the lens excels with a sophisticated design that includes 24 elements in 18 groups, utilizing XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion), LD (Low Dispersion), and Hybrid Aspherical elements to minimize chromatic aberrations and other optical distortions. The BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating further enhances image quality by reducing ghosting and flare, ensuring sharp, clear resolution even in challenging lighting conditions. This combination of advanced optics enables photographers to capture detailed images across the entire zoom range with excellent sharpness and beautiful bokeh effects.

The lens is also equipped with Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism, which delivers fast, quiet, and precise autofocus performance. This advanced AF system excels in tracking moving subjects, making it ideal for capturing fast-paced sports or unpredictable wildlife. Additionally, the built-in VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization system helps to reduce camera shake, ensuring sharp results even when shooting handheld at slower shutter speeds or longer focal lengths.

A notable feature of the Tamron 50-400mm is its impressive close-focusing capability. At the 50mm end, the lens can focus as close as 9.8 inches, offering a 1:2 maximum magnification ratio that enables half-macro photography. This makes it possible to capture detailed shots of small subjects, adding another layer of versatility to this already impressive zoom lens.

Tamron has also enhanced the user experience with a range of customizable functions accessible via the dedicated Tamron Lens Utility. This software allows users to update firmware, adjust the lens’s focus settings, and even enable a Focus Limiter function that restricts the autofocus range to prevent focusing on unwanted objects. The lens’s physical design includes a zoom lock mechanism, a Focus Set button, and moisture-resistant construction with a fluorine coating on the front element to protect against dust, water, and smudges.

In summary, the Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD lens for Nikon Z-mount cameras is a remarkable addition to any photographer’s kit, offering an unprecedented combination of range, portability, and optical performance. Its versatility from 50mm to 400mm allows photographers to seamlessly transition between different shooting scenarios without changing lenses, making it an ideal all-in-one solution for capturing landscapes, wildlife, sports, and more. With its advanced autofocus, image stabilization, and exceptional close-up capabilities, this lens is poised to redefine the possibilities of ultra-telephoto zoom photography.

Sony has officially announced the long-anticipated FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II lens (SEL85F14GM2), a significant upgrade to one of its most beloved portrait lenses. This second-generation lens comes with a range of enhancements, including a lighter and more compact design, improved autofocus (AF) performance, and an upgraded optical structure, making it an appealing choice for photographers and videographers alike.

The Ultimate Portrait Prime, Upgraded

The new FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II is a refined version of Sony’s classic portrait lens, now featuring faster autofocus, smoother bokeh, and video-friendly updates. It continues to deliver G Master’s renowned sharpness and pleasing bokeh, making it ideal for portrait, event, and other shallow depth-of-field applications in both still photography and video. The lens is designed to cater to the needs of professionals and enthusiasts, offering exceptional image quality across a wide range of uses.

Key Upgrades and Enhanced Optical Design

Replacing its eight-year-old predecessor, the FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II introduces significant improvements. Internally, the lens incorporates a refined optical design, including additional elements like a second extreme aspherical (XA) element. These elements enhance edge-to-edge sharpness and contrast, while also contributing to the signature smooth bokeh that distinguishes this lens class. The XA elements minimize imperfections like “onion ring” bokeh and chromatic aberrations, ensuring a clean and professional look in every shot. The lens’s 11-blade circular aperture further enhances its shallow depth-of-field effects, which are especially appealing for portrait photographers.

Superior Autofocus and Video Capabilities

The autofocus performance of the FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II has been significantly boosted, aligning with Sony’s flagship mirrorless camera capabilities. It delivers stills up to three times faster than its predecessor and supports high-speed continuous shooting up to 120fps when paired with cameras like the a9 III. The newly incorporated XD linear motor allows the lens to track moving subjects with remarkable precision, boasting performance up to seven times better than the original model.

Video shooters will also appreciate the upgrades. The lens provides precise focus tracking at up to 120p, aided by a new actuator that ensures quiet operation and minimizes focus breathing. The in-body breathing compensation, available in compatible Alpha-series bodies, further refines the lens’s video performance. For manual focus enthusiasts, the linear response manual focus feature delivers intuitive and accurate control. Additionally, the lens body includes several tactile controls such as a de-clickable aperture ring, an iris lock switch, and an AF/MF switch, enhancing its versatility for videography.

Lighter, Smaller, and More Durable

Despite its enhanced capabilities, the FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II is lighter and more compact than its predecessor—13% smaller and 20% lighter, weighing approximately 1.4 pounds. The lens is built to withstand challenging shooting conditions, featuring dust and moisture resistance and a fluorine coating that protects against water and oil. Conveniently, it retains the same 77mm filter thread as the original lens, making it easier for current users to transition.

The Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II positions itself as an essential tool for both professional and casual photographers and videographers using Sony E-mount cameras. With its blend of advanced optics, superior autofocus, and refined build, it sets a new benchmark for portrait prime lenses. What are your thoughts on this impressive upgrade?
