Dolls project - Royal University Centre - Kids Club

We are entering the fifth year, during which special relationships with the NW region were interrupted.

Even if there have been contacts occasionally, the personal aspect is still missing in such relationships. Personal means face-to-face contact - emails, Zoom conferences and similar means are always only a substitute. This applies to our planet, but also - if we look into the future - e.g. from Earth to Mars, this will be unpleasantly noticeable even during transport!

But if we think about our special relationships, we can internalize the project content. This means having taken up and maintaining the concern, namely the preservation of traditional culture. In the doll project by Dr Senta Siller and Madame Theresa, attention was drawn to the richness of our culture and this was made clear, not only to the adult generation.

The Royal University project with Prof showed how important it is for the student generation to engage with adapted technology (by Mr Victor and CAT) and traditional medicine (by Dr Thomas).

In the Kids Club project by CAT, the children were made aware of climate protection, resource protection and environmental protection. Despite all the problems and imponderables, we should always be aware of what we have achieved in practice and that it was not in vain if we have internalized the seeds of the three projects. There is always a reason to look positively into the future - hope never dies!

So let's welcome the coming year 2025 together!

Wir begeben uns nun mittlerweile in das fuenfte Jahr, in dem die besonderen Beziehungen zur NWRegion unterbrochen wurden.

Auch wenn zwischendurch immer wieder Kontakte waren, so fehlt doch das Persoenliche in solchen Beziehungen. Persoenlich bedeutet Kontakt von Angesicht zu Angesicht,- eMails, ZoomKonferenzen und aehnliche Mittel sind immer nur ein Ersatz. Das gilt auf unseren Planeten, aber auch -bei einem Blick ind die Zukunft- z.B. von der Erde zum Mars, schon auf dem Transport wird das unangenehm auffallen! Wir koennen aber, wenn wir an unsere besonderen Beziehungen denken, die Projekt-Inhalte verinnerlichen. Das bedeutet, das Anliegen, naemlich den Erhalt der traditionellen Kultur aufgenommen zu haben und zu erhalten.

Im Puppen-Projekt von Dr Senta und Madame Theresa wurde der Blick auf die Reichhaltigkeit unserer Kultur gelenkt und machte diese bewusst, nicht nur der erwachsenen Generation.

Im Projekt des Royal University mit Prof wurde gezeigt, wie wichtig die Beschaeftigung mit angepasster Technik (durch Mr Victor und CAT) und traditioneller Medizin (durch Dr Thomas) fuer die studierende Generation.

Im KidsClubProjekt von CAT wurden die Kinder sensibilisiert fuer Klimaschutz, Resourcenschutz, Umweltschutz.

Trotz aller Probleme und Unwaegbarkeiten sollten wir uns immer bewusst sein, was wir praktisch geleistet haben und dass es nicht umsonst war, wenn wir die Samen der drei Projekte verinnerlicht haben. Es gibt immer einen Grund positiv in die Zukunft zu schauen,- die Hoffnung stirbt nie!

So wollen wir gemeinsam das kommende Jahr 2025 begruessen!

Senta Maria Anna Siller (née Zmavc in Vienna) is a German designer, calligrapher, entrepreneur, organizer and project initiator. She was born in Vienna as one of six siblings. She is the great-niece of the illustrator Ernst Kutzer and the niece of the archaeologist Herrmann Vetters. After the war she grew up in Franconia, Germany. Between 1962 and 1988 she raised four children in Berlin. She owes her socialization to the living conditions after the Second World War. To improve her family's support, she earned money early on with paper cuttings and illustrations for newspapers in Bavarian newspapers. She studied graphic design at the State Academy of Fine Arts under Richard Blank (1901-1972, designer, calligrapher). As a graphic designer she received commissions in the areas of exhibition and trade fair construction, children's clothing, toys and book illustration. Further studies followed at the Technical University of Berlin, where she studied archaeology, philosophy, education and art history. She wrote her dissertation on the life and work of Carl Otto Czeschka. At the same time, she ran a children's clothing retail company and, as student director at the Berlin Lette-Verein, headed training in photography, graphic design and fashion design.

Since the 1970s, Siller has been collaborating with N. Pintsch in the German Society for the Promotion of Culture (DGFK, also in Berlin), a volunteer-run and privately financed association for the promotion of culture in various foreign projects. She developed projects in which scientific research results on traditional culture were to be used to develop income-generating measures for women in rural areas and to stem the rural exodus.

Her work has been exhibited at home and abroad and has been recognized with awards and medals. What is special about her work is its altruism and intercultural cooperation. She continues to work on a voluntary basis (Cultura e.V. on the Stober estate in Gross Behnitz/Nauen.

There is another way to go about it

Bartolome de las Casas (1484-1566) worked in Central America and Hans Knoepfli (1927-2023) in the Cameroonian grasslands; Both were connected to the organization of the church, but both are committed to preserving the traditional structures. De las Casas worked against enslavement, Knoepfli against the selling off of traditional values. Both worked on location - Being recognized for their work was not their main concern!

In our present time of global-digital-unification, it is of utter important to preserve the traditional-analogue-system, - without taking into account the influence of mass tourism, job creations, pseudo-inter-relationships, - the pseudo-values of the current time!

Academic institutions and their allies cannot carry out this task, - their stubbornness hinders and prevents them!

For this purpose and for this reason, there is a need to make efforts and carry out in-depth research, ignoring the prevailing and adopted values in order to create awareness about traditional values!

No matter what is conceived or initiated, - more or less quickly the thought process moves to mass thinking and mass production; The motive in the background is to be able to participate in global events.

Even if such thought processes are understandable due to the global spree, still the preservation and support of small-scale and unspectacular projects are necessary.

It is not the globalization and digitization that represents the basis for the future, but the increasingly disappearing analog, the cultural asset that has emerged at some point - similar to the arctic seed vault in Spitzergen in the area of plants and horticulture.

It is urgently needed to support the delicate shoots of such projects is urgently needed, including the preservation of the environment.

The usual commercialization of such projects is counterproductive and destructive!

On the occasion of Senta Siller's 88th birthday in 2023, the Friends of the SSDC in TGD have resolved to publish a memorandum in her honor.

This should not be understood as a homage to a person who always rejected such endeavors, but rather as an appreciation of an unusual idea, namely income-generating measures for people in rural areas, based on traditional culture and using local resources, and highlighting the selflessness of the project. This stands in complete contrast to the prevailing and increasingly growing global effort towards equalization of all cultures, discounting the fact that they are the real wealth of a country. Wealth is irrevocably lost in the onslaught of technology euphorics.

Senta Siller has worked in different positions and countries throughout her life. In more than 75 years of activity, she has met countless people, a large number of whom can no longer be interviewed. In this writing, however, a few voices were able to have their say, in which they fondly remember their encounters with this unusual woman, not only in her doll-making projects.

Rarely do we meet people who are unselfishly active for society's benefit.

The present publication intends to stimulate the reader in the undertaking, in the sense of making a certain effort, even if everything else speaks against it, - all for the welfare of the general public, even if such projects, as initiated by SSi and implemented with the help of many volunteers, are directed completely opposite to the global and digital mainstream.

The editors would like to thank all the people, organizations, and institutions involved who have supported and continue to support the work and ideas of SSi.

On the occasion of the turn of the century

The DGFK was founded almost fifty years ago. The practical engagement with cultures was implemented in many projects according to a model which used and demonstrated the various interdependencies in culture.

Projects emerged through initiatives, collaborations and activities, initially in Central Europe and after 1990 increasingly in other countries.

From around 2010, we started to collect results and examples into our own (DGFK) archive and assigned them to topics such as interviews, sounds, movies, slide shows, animations, books, posters, etc.

The year 2000 is a turning point in the DGFK, because at the end of 1999 analogue printing of the DGFK newsletter as well as of Indus-River, Sanaga Rivière, Rio Magdalena and Hekla was discontinued.

The reason for this was increasing digitization of media. This also led to increasing depth of the digital information, so that the DGFK established its own website, sponsored by a company, because one of our projects showed pilot character at the EXPO2000 show.

An eShop was installed for selling certain handicraft products from the projects, but ultimately it was abandoned as it did not appear to be suitable for the individually unique items.

In similar manner some websites were also removed because they were no longer necessary or technically obsolete (for example Internet radio projects). But they are stored in the archive and available to interested quarters.

News from a troubled region

Even if political, social and health problems and misery hinder the projects in the NW region or make visits from abroad impossible, digital communication still works.

One of CAT's projects is the KidsClub, which has been regularly overseen for many years by R.Perner and L.Fluegge.

The KidsClub arose from the CAT initiative CAT Club, in which selected schools in the region received a set of alternative technology (SolarCooker, Wind-Mill, etc.) from CAT and were able to gain experience with it.

This initiative resulted in the KidsClub, which, under the umbrella of CAT, introduced children to the possibilities of alternative technology in a playful way.

Every year the foreign volunteers support the project for CAT-internal events, in which in the current situation, i.e in the backdrop of months of school strike, then school closure due to the pandemic, Manasse Norbert is now able to attend high school.

Am 30/31 Mai und am 1 Juni 2020 in der Zeit von 11-19 Uhr zeige ich neue Skulpturen die als Resultat meiner Arbeit und Studienreisen durch 5Länder auf 3 Kontinenten in 8 Monaten gesehen werden können. Außerdem zeige ich die Arbeiten aus Holz/Stein/Metall und Papier die während der Arbeit und Studienreise2019 entstanden sind auf meinen Arbeitsplatz in der Messiger Str.23 in 17111 Sommersdorf !!!

Vor genau einem Jahr konnte ich auf meiner zweiten Arbeit und Studienreise diesmal nach Kamerun kreativ mit Kindern im Sinne des Naturschutze arbeiten Im Austausch mit den einheimischen Künstler Solomon Tumenta Nchuh im Handicraft Cooperative Bamenda sind diese beiden Holzplastiken entstanden . Sie stellen einen Gorilla und einen Hornraben da die auch in Kamerun in jeweiligen Unterarten vorkommen.

Auch konnte ich an einen Versammlungshaus einem Fulanihaouse innerhalb des Handicraftcenters ein Wandbild fertigen und es sind Bilder für das Restaurant entstanden.

Trotz der angespannten regionalen Situation bin ich froh diese Zusammenarbeit mit den wunderbaren Künstlern und Mitarbeitern der Handicraftcooperative de Cameroon genutzt zu haben und vor allen den Kindern Momente der freien kreativen Tätigkeit gegeben zu haben.

Mein Dank gilt Frau Senta Seller und Herrn Norbert Pintsch, Herrn Peter Weihmann für die wertvolle und so wunderbare Unterstützung sowie den neu gewonnenen Freunden der Handicraftcooperative Bamenda . Ich hoffe sehr wiederkommen zu können !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boosting Imaginative Abilities in Children is the Best Form Of Education - German Volunteer

Peter Hecht, an artist/painter, carver, sculptor, musician with specialty in Spanish music, says each time he tries to think deep and bring out a new idea either on canvass, on wood, on a stone or in music form, it makes him so happy and fulfilled.

This German Volunteer who was in Cameroon and had working sessions with children in the domain of arts, carving and sculpture said, boosting the power or imagination in children is the best form of education. To him a child can only grow fast when that child is allowed to explore his or her imagination. The education of reciting, cramming and reproducing people's ideas and thoughts which most often donot reflect the reality of today's world are all obsolete.

During his brief stay in the restive Northwest Region of Cameroon in May and mid June 2019, precisely in Bamenda at the Center for Appropriate Technology CAT located at the Bamenda handicraft center, Mr. Hecht had some arts and craft sessions with a group of children below 15 years. These children were coached on how to explore their inner thoughts and feeling and bring them out in drawing using various colours.

This study programme was as a resultof the cooperation between CAT and DGFK, It was dubbed artist-in-residence-programme.

Designs were demonstrated on walls, floors, and terrace and on cardboards and canvass. Peter, who has soft spot for animals both on land in the water, also had sessions with some carvers and sculptors introducing the use of flame on wood to produce dark coloured sea orchid. He was able to savor some brass work with a Bamenda based brass smith. All along the children were given the opportunity identify with various forms of art in their own opinion of what they perceive.

Due to the current situation, the activities have to be flexible.

The Voluntary Peter Hecht works of art with children of Kids Club on creative designs, which are displayed in the restaurant of the Arts and Crafts Center.

The equipment installed for CAT's Royal Rehabilitation Centre under Appropriate Technology has been repaired.

The arts and crafts sector has adapted to the current conditions. Mr Basil will work with the foreign Volunteer.

Madam Theresa successfully delivered items according to the orders to the handicraft center, as well as the center of Prescraft.

By Volunteer Peter Hecht as part of the artist-in-residence program, in which he stayed in the guesthouse of the artisan cooperative, so that there is a special proximity to the local woodcarvers.

Volunteer Marlis trains volunteer nurses from Alahkie and gives medical donations to the Royal Rehabilitation Center.

Notes on building in rural areas, incl. historic preservation

The protection against the wrongs of nature has always been the topic of construction.- yesterday, today and probably tomorrow!

In non-industrialized times, one used the available resources of the respective environment. Due to growing population and concentration, resources were increasingly used up and destroyed.

In the micro-area of construction, dwellings are created, in the eyes of the builders, for a long period of time. This period was reduced over the course of the century, because the rule was meant to be generational; the growing elite built its buildings for many generations - meanwhile it has been reduced to one generation.

In the assumption that it is more favorable to acquire an old building, the new owner does not understand the problem:

the building regulations have changed and the requirements for a building seem to be increasing,
the costs of maintaining an existing building are more than the cost of a new building,
the innovations from the city are carelessly taken over in the rural space as an improvement and understood.

For old buildings appropriate, old and common materials should be used. If this does not happen, there will be medium to long term building problems. The construction faults however grow because not only old material is installed, but also that the workers no longer have the necessary knowledge.

This process is a worldwide phenomenon. At the same time, it also explains why it is more likely to be demolished and rebuilt - assuming that this will save repair costs. In fact, however, resources are destroyed and there is no long-term preservation of the building, rather only a shift of the problem.

About the basic misconception of NGO projects

NGO projects are non-profit ventures, i.e. altruistic projects. The critical viewer quickly realizes whether the project is financially beneficial to the circle of contributors or a family.

If the facility is useful for a family and it finances the life of this family, which also applies to large families, so they should honestly convert it into private limited company.

The project carriers and the supporters of the project normally do not share this view, for which there are two reasons:

- the project carriers, the users and the suppliers, are simply too connected to each other to recognize this fact, and

- The supporters are too superficial, so that the of concealment is not perceived.

Another widespread problem is the inability of the participants to identify themselves as a project in the global and increasingly uniform world.

This means:

- Unknowingly, economic opportunities are transferred from A to B. These possibilities were in the past the results of colonialism, in the present it is the short-sighted spread of standards of so-called industrialized countries to the so-called developing countries.

Now it could be argued that life in a country is never one-sided, and in every country there is a gap between the upper and lower classes.

That is true, but the purpose of NGO projects is not to participate in the transfer of external values, but to preserve the peculiarities of the local values.

If this purpose is not shared by the project carriers, who operate under the cloak of selflessness, then the transformation into a serious private limited company should be undertaken and the principles of profit maximization followed.

The voluntary work, which was part of the long-term project work in various countries, was therefore discontinued and commercial consultation on usual rules for international business were offered.

Even if the above argument may seem antisocial to the reader, the rule remains: one and one is two, - not more, but also not less!

The production of dolls continues independently, but an additional area is to be opened in which the art (program with Central European artists) is included and artists in residence work for their own projects, but also with local artisans and the KidsClub.

Concerning the KidsClub, targeted events can take place in the Baptist Conference Center in Nwen.

The Royal Development Corporation will also offer targeted training seminars in the conference area of Mbegwi Monastery, which is safer and accessible to those interested.

A special event will be the Slide Show Moses Mill in the Alliance Francaise, in which the activities of the network will be shown in about 20 posters. Relevant discussions were held between the AF Director, PDP and the CAT Director.

CAT and BUST (Bamenda University of Science and Technology)

The ongoing cooperation with the University was further strengthened through a visit. Renewable energy is not a technical but a comprehensive issue. The pending publication of PDP might be of interest to the BUST, - in the publication there is still the possibility of a message from the university.

This small exhibition shows the work of about 20 years done by the CAT. Likewise, cooperations (e.g. Akwatinuighah and Akaankang with CAT, RDC, SPATH) and special projects (e.g. weather station, drinking water tests) have been taken into account.

Particularly noteworthy are achievements of CAT in connection with the Training on the Job Initiative for young men, as well as international projects about handicrafts, as well as the national projects on alternative technology (in the districts of the NW region, but also other regions), for which various Awards and Prizes were given.

Another initiative worth mentioning is the Kids Club, where children were playfully introduced to arts and crafts and alternative techniques.

Collaborations have successfully taken place between CAT and their partners and other foreign volunteers through the initiative of Viennese designer and initiator Dr Senta Siller.
