According to DJ Chuck Chillout‘s Twitter post, the legendary Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest has passed away at the young age of 45. Chuck Chillout posted the Tweet just after 1 a.m. EST Wednesday morning [March 23].

The Five-Foot Assassin has been battling his health for years, consistently fighting Type-I diabetes, which he developed in 1990.

The news of his death was also confirmed byStatik Selektah, and many veteran Hip Hop artists, including Aesop Rock, Chuck D andEl-P, who have taken to social media to express their condolences, as well.

A Tribe Called Quest, of course, is Hip Hop royalty and greatly respected by countless fans around the world. No details surrounding his exact cause of death have yet been reveled. Check back for updates as this story continues to develop.

We review the recent London gig of the infamous hip-hop DJ/producer Not many events can claim to attract such high profiles as Four Tet, The 2 Bears and Thom Yorke on the same night. However, when someone as prolific and influential as Madlib is headlining, it is little wonder. Also on the bill, Jeremiah Jae and Kutmah were representing some heavy East Coast vibes, while Moiré brought some welcome UK flavours to the table. Upon arriving at Koko, DJ Mag was immediately a little skeptical as to whether the event was going to live up to our high expectations; with some choice beards on display and subtle swaying the usual omens of an awkward hipster-fest. Our worries soon proved to be ill-founded though, and as soon as Brainfeeder's Jeremiah Jae burst onto the stage, the flat caps and snapbacks came out of the woodwork and onto the floor. Midnight signalled the start of the main event and Koko erupted with a roar of whistles and shouts as the announcer welcomed Lord Quas to the stage and his set begun. We were surprised to see Madlib using CDJs; having not seen him DJ before we assumed that with his reputation as one of the world's most shrewd crate-diggers, he would make use of his extensive collection by DJing vinyl. This was not the case, though by no means was this in any way a limiting factor. His skill behind the decks was immediately evident, effortlessly interchanging and intertwining a brilliant selection of beats and vocals, never sticking to one vibe for too long, keeping the crowd constantly engaged. Any of his own productions he threw into the mix were instantly recognised by the crowd and their adoration of his work was clear to see, with every lyric being rapped back, and a round of applause after every piece. We expected his set to be slightly more eclectic than it was, anticipating some jazz and soul rarities, or some classic breaks maybe. However, the set was much more straight-up hip-hop than expected, though of course, nothing is ever 'straight up' with Madlib. His selection of beats were all very stylistically Madlib, a mix of psychedelic and experimental hip-hop mixed with expertly executed rhymes from vocalists such as Doom, Freddie Gibbs and MED. There certainly was enough variation, though; if attending this gig has taught us anything about Madlib, it's to expect the unexpected. After a lengthy industrial section warped into a head-banging beat, Madlib's set sadly came to an end and a rather more sweaty crowd made for the bar and smoking area. It was a brilliant set that was as danceable as it was trippy and as thought-provoking as it was exciting, and every head in the room yearned for more as Kutmah once again took up the decks. We don't want to be to quick to judge Kutmah, as we had heard he was a brilliant DJ, and after listening to one of his mixes on YouTube we are confident he was just having a bad night. However, his constant use of the same two samples, very loudly, every two minutes, was just plain annoying. Even a back-to-back set from Kate and Wills might well have given him a run for his money tonight! It may also have been that his particularly heavy selection of East Coast tracks was not to the taste of the crowd, though during his second set after Madlib the reaction from the crowd was a marked improvement. All in all, a fantastic night was had by all, and we applaud Soundcrash for yet another brilliant night of music.

Campaign to have a street named after the legendary Paradise Garage spinner A street party took place last night in New York City that was the latest step in a campaign to get a street in the city named after pioneering house DJ Larry Levan. The street party was shut down by the police an hour early on Sunday 11th May, but not before it had made its mark. The event was live streamed around the world by the Red Bull Music Academy, with many international DJs commenting on Twitter about the campaign. The campaign has been set up to have a part of King Street in the city, where the infamous Paradise Garage used to be, named after its famous resident DJ. The section between Varick and Hudson in NYC, where Paradise Garage club-goers used to queue up , has been earmarked for the name-change tribute. The campaign was launched by DJ Frankie Cruz, a former Paradise Garage clubber. He set up a petition that attracted a few thousand signatures initially, and when the Red Bull Music Academy got hold of it they decided to help take it to the next level by staging a street party. “As the legendary DJ of the Paradise Garage, Larry Levan's musical journeys resulted in a very strong following by both gay and straight communities alike. As one of the first DJs to perform worldwide as well as one of the first DJs to develop and own his own record label, Larry Levan was a true pioneer in the dance music industry,” the petition begins. In the 26 years since Larry Levan’s untimely death, an event has been held every year to celebrate the Paradise Garage’s legacy. The 20th July was Levan’s birthday and also the time of year that the Garage closed, and it was at last year’s party that the NYC house heads had the idea. “While there were plenty of very large clubs afterwards and into the 90's, none could ever compare to the feeling of being a part of something so obviously special, very large but intimate, and not diluted by the commercial imperatives of selling as much liquor as possible," said Francois K, a friend and associate of Levan's who played the party last night. "It undeniably changed the lives of those who attended." The recent death of Frankie Knuckles has helped shine a light on house music’s originators, believes Frankie Cruz. Knuckles had a street in Chicago named after him in 2006 — Chicago senator Barack Obama was instrumental in securing this monument at the time — and also in Chicago, a section of South Michigan Avenue has just been approved to be renamed Farley Jackmaster Funk Way. Levan’s part in helping New York gain its rep as “the city that never sleeps” — he used to control the decks at the Paradise Garage all night until the following lunchtime — means that New York may not be far behind Chicago soon, although the city’s authorities can’t act until the petition is received and a lot of bureaucratic hoops have to be leapt through in order the secure a street’s name-change. The importance of Larry Levan’s decade-long tenure at the Paradise Garage for the development of house music can’t be over-emphasised. Towards the end of his life, Larry spent three months at the Ministry Of Sound in its early days helping to fine-tune the soundsystem.

Kevin Saunderson's latest instant classic Detroit pioneer Kevin Saunderson has been having quite the renaissance of late. In between banging out techno and house sets the world around, he's been busy in the studio and the latest fruit of his labour is this summery flower of a track as Inner City, the super-group behind 'Big Fun' and 'Good Life'. 'Bad Girl', featuring the voice of Paris Grey, is a tribute to disco queen Donna Summer and comes with remixes from House of Virus, Tommy Onyx and his son Dantiez Saunderson. DJ Rashad, a leading producer in Chicago, died on April 27, according to Chicago police. Rashad was found unresponsive by a friend in his home on the West Side of Chicago at 1:30 p.m. DJ Rashad was pronounced dead at the scene by Chicago police who arrived just moments after Rashad’s body was discovered by a friend in his home. DJ Rashad Found Dead At Age 35 DJ Godfather was the first to announce Rashad’s death on Twitter. Godfather was scheduled to perform in Detroit later on that night along with Rashad and DJ Spinn. Police have not released an official cause of death yet but preliminary reports suggest that Rashad died from a drug overdose, reports the BBC. Chance The Rapper, who is often seen collaborating on stage with Justin Bieber, also spoke out on Twitter saying: “music lost a legend today.” Hardest hit by the loss will be the Chicago dance community. Rashad was the number one authority for “footwork”, a frenzied and hypnotic style of dance music that’s extremely popular in Chi-Town! This is the second hip-hop/DJ death in as many months for the city. Chicago is still coming to terms with the loss of rapper Frankie Knuckles who passed away on March 31st.
