Day#12 The inner-self challenged by the outer conditions of the previous day was rewarded with a blissful day.

After the storm comes a calm.

The writing on the wall (or in this case, on the sky): raincoats on... all the way!

576km, 575km to Santiago... Are you sure?

We got it! It's that way.

The countryside is always a balm to the soul for any peregrino. But rain and dirt roads always end up in muddy trails. Watch your step!

WOW!

Going up. Going down. By this time you're so used to the rollercoaster of the Camino that these hills are like a walk in the park.

Santo Domingo de la Calzada in sight. What a relief!

The old quarter deserves a visit of the weary pilgrim. Stroll around this medieval alleys and squares, appreciate the architecture and just bask in the moment.

Statues of Santo Domingo, founder of the town in 1044. His tomb can be found n the Cathedrlal, obviously we couldn't miss a visit to one of the most important benefactors of the Camino in the Middle Ages.

And while you're in the Cathedral, don't freak out if you hear a cock crowing. It's reminiscent of a legend which involves a pilgrim and his faith in Santo Domingo.

From Ventosa to Azofra (17km)

Day #11 We left Ventosa early in the morning hoping to dodge the rain, as the weather forecast for the day had "promised" heavy rain for most part of the stage. It proved to be right!

The Iglesia de Ventosa enveloped in fog as we were leaving the small village.

We set out with our rain ponchos on as dark skies, thick fog and humidity were ominous: the sun would probably never shine on us.

With the drizzle, the rocky ascent to the Alto de San Antón became too slippery. It obliged us to be more careful with our ground.

As we approached Nájera, the rain started to subside and the sun made a promise to come out soon.

Even in the darkest of days, you can have a rainbow! And we did! So, as we arrived to Nájera the timid sun fooled us into deciding to continue on. A hasty decision that we would come to regret!

From Logroño to Ventosa (20km)

Day #10 When leaving Logroño this was the view we were offered! Sometimes, looking back is worth while!

The path that leads the pilgrims out of Logroño is green, pleasant and quiet. What more could we ask?

Walking along the Grajera dam was one of the highlights of this stage.

A very relaxing green area surrounds the dam. Excellent for birdwatching, trecking and even fishing. "Fish dont't bite a lot," we were told, "but who cares? It's relaxing!"

This is La Rioja: green vineyards and red soil...

Or should we say "red rocky gravel"? It's amazing how nature takes form, even in the hardest of conditions!

A rusty fence "embroidered" with thousands and thousands of crosses improvised by the pilgrims. We couldn't help adding to the number.

Navarrete on the background, that's why we're wearing such broad smiles: time for a rest!

Just before entering Navarrete, we came across the ruins of the San Juan de Acre Pilgrims' Hospital (1185).

The Iglesia de l'Asunción and its gold-plated altarpiece in Navarrete has left quite an impression on Ana.

The looming skies... Time to hurry our pace if we wanted to reach Ventosa in dry clothes.

Our arrival at Ventosa... in soaking wet clothes! We didn't make it without a heavy rainfall coming down our shoulders after all, but we were glad we had finally made it to our stage's destination.

It didn't take long for the skies to pour down. And our tour of the city was cut short... That's Santiago's way of saying that it was time for a rest.

Day #9 Another sunny day to lift our spirit.

On this day we would leave the province of Navarre behind and set foot on La Rioja, the famous Spanish wine-producing province.

Mountains and valleys were the day's scenery, and if that was so, it could only mean one thing...

... ups...

... and downs!

But always on track!

The wheat fields of Navarre would give room to the vineyards of La Rioja, but not until we had walked a good dozen of kilometers.

"How about a shortcut?" Bad idea! Going down was a bit of a challenge and going up the other way was too strenuous for the legs. Shorter doesn't always mean easier!

A natural balsa, a depression which fills with rainwater forming a small lagoon.

The city of Viana on sight! We were almost halfway to our destination of the day.

It's quite worth the visit as you can see. The alparpiece is an astonishing work of art!

Last steps on the province of Navarre. Between meadows and wheat fields, the vineyards started filling the scenery.

Adios Navarra! Hola La Rioja!

Now, this "andadero" is quite a stretch before entering Logroño!

Anabela and Maria. Maria is a very kindhearted Spanish lady keen on statistics: she counts the pilgrims that walk by her doorstep, sells cold beverages and offers the shade of her yard for tired pilgrims to rest a while. And she is eager to change a few words with anyone who is willing.

Day #8 on the Camino Frances, two "intrepid giants" charging forward.

The sun was barely peeking on the horizon when we set out for the day's stage.

Clear skies promised a warm and pleasant walk for the day.

The paths looked never-ending, but as the terrain was flat we were full of confidence.

Wishes of a "Buen Camino" spread along the way.

By this time, bad luck was knocking on our door. However, the Camino's beauty kept us from attending to its needs.

End of the stage in sight... So we thought!

Nothing compares to this "wonderful" stage ending... a long stretch of burning asphalt road to ruin sore feet!

"That must be Torres del Rio..." It wasn't!

Sansol?! But where is Torres del Rio??? We would have our answer a few kilometers ahead: Torres del Rio is tucked away in a deep valley. No wonder we couldn't see it.

The Casa Mariela was one of the best albergues we found along the way.

Day #7 the leaden skies didn't give us a break!

Estella was just a stone's throw away!

Alex & Luigi, an unforgetable fellow companion, smiling broadly at the camera!

Church of San Pedro de la Rúa in Estella. Don't let the flights of stairs deter you from going inside, it's more than worth the visit!

And from up there you'll be rewarded with a great view of Estella.

See the church tower in the back? That's Irache Monastery... You're in for a surprise!

Alex and Ana... caught in the act! This is a very peculiar fountain: the wine fountain of Bodegas Irache. No kidding, real wine, for free!

Day #6 on the Camino Frances, crossing the Navarre province

This is the medieval bridge the queen ordered to be built at the exit of Puente la Reina to allow pilgrims the safe crossing of te river Arga, thus the name of the small town (the Queen's Bridge).

Right at the top of a very steep hill, Alex cheered enthusiatically for a weary pilgrim for winning over the ascent - Ana couldn't help the broad smile!

Mañeru on the horizon. With vineyards all around, this is the first Pueblo we crossed on this stage.

Cirauqui is sight for sore eyes - or should we say, sore legs!? On top a Hill, the medieval town has everything, from steep cobled streets to centuries-old stone walls, from the Celts heritage to Arab legacy, from ancient houses to modern-day pilgrim backpacks!

The secret behind the yellow arrows: its the work of volunteers that periodically repaint the arrows that guide pilgrims on the Camino. God bless them!

Just off Cirauqui, pilgrims trudge the two-thousand-old Roman. Watch your step as the road has seen better days and the stone-covered path has plenty of holes and gaps between rounded big stones worn-out by use.

Nearing Vilatuerta, another medieval bridge allows the crossing over the river Iranzu. Vilatuerta had to be our stage's final stop.

Day #5 Climbing to the Alto del Perdón

The exit of Pamplona is quite nice for pilgrims: one goes through green parks and well-kept andaderos

Just off Pamplona, wishes of a Buen Camino.

The Acella Bridge a few kilometers away from the city center.

Entering Cizur Menor on the boardwalk besides the main road. Cizur Menor is a very good option for a stage ending as it has all the amenities for pilgrims.

A nice café in Cizur Menor where many pilgrims stop for a rest and a bite, and so did we.

Back on track, shooting the breeze with a fellow pilgrim.

The gray skies promised some rain for the day. Let's see how it goes!

Spring in full bloom! All around, the meadows spread their magnificent show of renewal.

The deserted village of Guenduláin, just two kilometers before Zariquiegui. Once an important village it is nowadays abandoned. You can still see the ruins of the church and the crenelated palace.

"Just one more mile!"

"How about taking a break in Zariquiegui just before the tough climb to the Alto del Perdón?"

Which way? Just follow the yellow arrows.

It wasn't a easy climb but still we had a big smile on our faces.

A very discrete fountain on the left side of the Camino. This is the Gambellacos or Reniega fountain. Legend says that the devil offered water to a half-dead parched pilgrim if he renounced his faith in God, Virgin Mary and Santiago. The pilgrim spurned the devil's temptation, prayed until the devil was gone and a frountain of water sprout from the ground.

From Trinidad de Arre to Pamplona (5km)

Day #4 - Almost a rest day at the Camino

We departed very early from Tinidad de Arre...

... And by 9.30h we were arriving at Pamplona.

Today the landscapes were not as pretty as in the previous days, but at least the Camino was very well signed.

We crossed Arga River through the medieval bridge of Madalena.

Afterwards we walked around the Pamplona city walls…

... and crossing Puerta de Francia we finally arrived to Pamplona's city center .

As we arrived to Pamplona early in the morning, it didn´t sound fair to us to get a place at the albergue. Therefore we walked through the cobbled streets of Pamplona looking for a cheap hostel to crash for the night. And luckily we found one just before it started raining. After we took care of the logistics, and despite the pouring rain, we went for a short walk around Pamplona's city center in order to see some of the city highlights. Here are some of the pictures we took.

Our first stop was at the amazing Cathedral of Santa Maria,

Afterwards we visited the Ayuntamiento (City Hall)...

And the Plaza del Castillo... Very empty due to the bad weather.

We finished our walk at the Pamplona Praza de Toros (bullfighting ring).

From Zubiri to Trinidad de Arre (17km)

Day #3 The "never-ending" roller coaster awaited us.

The first setback of the day would meet us quite early in the day: rain!

Crossing a small village (pueblo) on our way to Akerreta. No problems on paved road, but soon our boots would be covered in mud.

In Akerreta, while looking for a dry spot to rest, we met this couple, two gentle souls that welcomed us with a warm coffee an even warmer embrace.

The rain subsided... So, off we went in high spirits!

The river Arga would keep us company for quite o stretch of the way.

Sometimes the Camino is beautiful...

...others, it's ugly.

But it's always magical!

Another tough climb to put you through the test.

River Ultzama and the ancient Roman bridge of Trinidad de Arre, our stop for the night. The plan was to go as far as Pamplona, but God had other plans in store for us!

The altar of the Basílica de la Trinidad de Arre: this church conveys a truly peaceful and serene feeling, an invitation to meditation, prayer and contemplation.

The albergue in Trinidad de Arre is run by the Hermanos Maristas, a religious congregation. This is the yard just outside the albergue, the best place to ease the pain and quiet down the mind.

Up and down all the way. Up again! Take a deep breath.

Alto de Mezkiritz: the climb is really worth the effort; this is the amazing view you're rewarded with!

"Don't stop walking" who would have ever thought of stopping?! At this stage, probably at every odd mile!

At least, Alexandre was leading the way and doing everything to prove the climb wasn't that hard.

We made a little friend while having lunch on the village of Lintzoain and he kept us company for a stretch of the Camino.

"Tired? ~ Exhausted!" A fellow pilgrim having a moment's rest at a vending truck on Alto do Erro.

The cloudy sky at Alto do Erro might have scared us with a promise of coming rain. Impressive, nonetheless!

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port: ready, set, go! Our smiling faces on the moment we took the first steps towards the Pyrenees.

Early morning, the French town was enveloped in mist.

Route Napoléon, the "high route": the decision was made to cross the mountain.

The mist slowly receding and allowing us a glimpse of the views.

The valley still shrouded in mist.

Our happy faces as we went up the mountain and glad we had chosen to do so!

The snow from the snow storm that had hit the mountain just one week before had already melted, allowing us to use the dirt trails instead of the paved road.

Way down the valley we could spot Roncesvalles - only another 6km descent and we would finally arrive our stage's aim. However our knees would have to face the hardships of a 500 metre steep decline.

Finally, Real Colegiata de Roncesvalles, the albergue for our second night on the Camino. And we arrived in the nick of time: it started pouring just soon after!
