This past week was an exciting one at camp! We had campers tumbling on mats, walking across balance beams, dress up as their favorite superheroes and the like. Also, on Friday we had a traditional flag raising ceremony. We were joined by local superheroes from our campers families to various Fire and Police Departments, Ambulance Corps, and even the US Military. 107.3/99.3FM, or WRWD, also came out and was kind enough to not only video our Camp Redwood Flag Ceremony but to do an audio recording that they will be playing on the radio station this week. The recording is of our campers saying the Pledge of Allegiance. We are incredibly honored to have hosted such an event and have the turnout we did. Thank you to all who came out to show your support not only for camp, but for the men and women we have in the service!

This past week was our Olympics week at Camp in celebration of the London 2012 Olympics. Campers were split into countries and played many Olympic games (ie: hockey, swimming and even gymnastics). The campers were also kept current with frequent medal updates as well as a special bulletin board posted outside of the office with the daily games schedule and outcomes of the prior day.

This week starts Superheroes week! We are not only talking Batman, Superman, Wonderwoman, the Hulk and Captain America, but other heroes we hold dear to our hearts. On Friday, August 10th at our 9:15am Flag Raising we will be honoring our local superheroes. We are inviting memebers of all the local Fire, EMS, Police, Military and other public service agencies to camp for this special event. We also would like to extend the invitation to the community! If you or a loved one are a member of the local services please come out and join our event Friday! We have another exciting week of camp in store, we’re looking forward to its start bright and early Monday morning!

Color war has begun! The White Zombies and Maroon Werewolves have invaded Camp Redwood for the fifth week of the 2012 season. Teams have been set, counselors are split,and campers are in competition for the team title of Color War champion.

A healthy game of Cage Ball, a volleyball type game, set the stage for our first White vs. Maroon team battle! The Maroon Werewolves walked away with 28 points and the White Zombies with 22. Competition will continue tomorrow as we being handing out points for individual activities as well as team points in our annual swim meet! Stay tuned for a points update and to find out which team will come out with the Color War victory!

Sorry to our avid readers for the delayed posting, with the season kicking off and getting started we’ve been incredibly busy. Between our regular day activities, Pirate Treasure Hunt, Capture the Flag, Lake Minnewaska, Ice Time and other special events we’ve been on our toes 24/7.

With that said we are incredibly excited for this coming weeks theme and events. Color War is one of Camp Redwood’s favorite traditions. When camp is split into teams of Maroon and White who know what will happen; songs are sung, chants begin and some good ole fashion healthy competition is set in place.

In addition to our color war activities we have a very exciting overnight trip planned for Friday into Saturday evening. We are taking our campers to see the Hudson Valley Renegades

Friday night for an incredible game and fireworks display. On Sunday, we are taking a ride up to East Durham to spend the day at Zoom Flume water park. Registrations and payment for this trip are do by the end of our camp day Tuesday (July 24th).

With one week down and 8 more to go, we are greatly anticipating the start of another fantastic week! Our theme for the week is Patriot pride, so we will be showing some USA spirit at camp this week. After working out some kinks with the weather last week we are ready for a week of fun in the sun. It is the week of the 4th of July, we will be having camp though we can’t call it a regular day because we will be having a special story told to us by our own Uncle Buddy. In addition to the 4th of July story, we will be tie-dying all week in arts and crafts (making some red white and blue pieces of work). Here it is week number 2! We hope you and your families enjoyed week 1 and continue to have fun with us this summer!

Week 1 is off with a bang! In spite of some rough weather on day 1, we’ve been able to get the kids out and about and introduced to the grounds. All campers have been in the water, on the courts, and some in the air as they have experienced the challenge course. Only 3 days in and many more days of fun to go!!

As you may have heard, Camp Redwood has invested in a challenge course! For those of you unfamiliar with a challenge course, it is created of what are called elements. Each element is an activity that serves to challenge an individual or group to accomplish certain goals. Our course is secluded behind the lake giving it a very outdoorsy and earthy feel, but without being completely out of touch. It is truly the epitome of an authentic outdoors experience. Our course is coming together! At this point we have  strictly low elements including a port hole, spider web, and log swing. We are working to expand our course over the summer, so there will be  more elements to come! In total we will have around ten elements to challenge our campers to. If you have any questions about the course please, do not hesitate to contact camp and ask! Our program director, Rory, is our specialist having prior experience working a challenge course. Now we are just counting down the days until we can have kids on the grounds playing, learning and growing at Camp Redwood!

Staff Orientation is just days away, the property is coming together and we’re all anxious to get going. The sounds of laughter and cheering will once again take over the 40 acre property that is known as Camp Redwood. Part of what makes this experience so amazing is that we are separating ourselves from the normal hustle and bustle of everyday life AND that we remove all of the other distractions from camp. With that being said we would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that Cell Phones, Ipod’s, Video Games and all other electronic devices are NOT permitted at camp. We want the kids to go out and enjoy their time away from all of those things, so please leave them at home. The staff will collect any electronic devices found on the campers during the day and those items will be turned into the office for safe keeping until the end of the day. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. We hope everyone is as excited as we are to get going on the 2012 Summer!

After months of anticipation,  it’s here!!! Just 24 days away from opening day at Camp Redwood! There is so much going on this month, with some of our staff making an appearance at Carly’s Day at Orange County Choppers to start it all off. We will be there, as will several of our past and present campers. We are  looking forward to seeing and showing some support for our camper Ben Kohn and his band Well Above Average, who will be performing at Carly’s Day on Saturday, June 2nd.

Following the excitement of Saturday, we have an Open House on Sunday, June 3rd. We are so ready for campers to be here, we’re just elated to get families and staff out to mingle and see the grounds. It’s bound to be a good time getting to see our past campers and families and meet the new ones coming in.

On Saturday, June 9th, Camp Redwood will be hosting it’s first Rookie Day! This is a day dedicated to campers who are new to the summer camp experience. It’ll be a shortened camp day to give campers and their families a taste of how much fun we will be having this summer!
