scary full page picture of a shouting cricket player.
open mouth with a black hole inside, blood on the lips,
fiery goggles, broad nose, wire like beard , a gorilla
in the making. well almost.

then the blurb on the side. malayalam words written in
english sayit has seen many things and then lists the
mile stones in cricket history. like dashing of the
ashes dream, magic wand of a 16 year old, the year 1983.
the blurb then concludes in local dialect what you have seen
is no sight. see what you are going to see.

in the next full page you see the zoom picture of a stadium,
sachin ,his signature , a tv with the cricket ball picture. and
of course the details including the prie range of the tv .
toshiba led tv cricket series.

this will probabaly change the way print ads are made in future.
i forgot to see who designed it. no regrets. they will be in more
places soon.

unbelievably silly. what is the message ? that the making charge is

but a real incident.

the latest advt campaign from this voltage stabiliser company says
guard your led lcd tv with this stabiliser against damage to
the very sensitive pcb of your led lcd tv.

every one including the owner of this company who
incidentally is an engineer knows that led lcd tv works
on very low voltage (less than 40 volts, not sure ,
corret me if i am wrong ) and the power supply unit
( which derives the working voltage from 220 v ac )
is designed to guard against all those great dangers
which are highlighted in the quarter page (almost ) advt
on the front page of a national daily newspaper.

may be this is the last nail on the coffin wherin lies
the fond hope that business and morality can
somehow co exist at least in great minds

internet is a difficult place . one can slip and fall into the many
pitfalls the internet space is dotted with. home job sites are probably
the most popular cheat sites. ( most dangerous tag may go to those
emails offering you millions of dollars just for a few lacs in indian
rupees towards processing fee.)

here is the story of a home job site which employs a rather
innovative method.

the site says you will get 10 dollars for viewing advertisements.
to start with you are offered 10 sites and on viewing these sites
and answering a few querries your account is promptly credited
with ten dollars for each of the site. you can view the credit and
you are enthralled.

the catch is when you ask for payment. you get a message
that you should upgrade to a premium account paying just
25 dollars . ( in the free account that you are using now you
get only credits, not payments )

you are still on positive territory. your free account shows
a credit balance of about 100 dollars ( from the 10 sites you
have viewed in just one  sitting , not braking even for meals) .
you can pay 25 dollars to upgrade the account and still get a
payment of 75 dollars.  right ? wrong . that 25 dollars has to
be paid upfront and in hard cash .

good initiative by the kerala electricity board to prevent overuse of electricity.
a series of sensible advertisemensts highlighting steps to rationalise use of electricity.
good step indeed.

but why stop there? why not subsidise the so called wonder lamp the CFL spending
a fraction of the expenditure on these advertisments? is it not better to make the CFL
affordable rather than repeat the advise like a parrot to buy them paying almost
10 times the price of a normal bulb ?

also what is happening to LED bulbs ? much more energy efficient and long lasting than
CFL , but costlier as well , may be 30 times. why not offer a one time subsidy and
popularise LED bulbs ?

what is happening to SOLAR alternative ? in a country like india sun power should be
the cheapest source. but look at the price of solar panels . unaffordable by any reckoning.
not even tax cuts there. with the inherent inefficiency of the battery system and the prohibitive
cost of the solar panels no sane person would think of shifting to solar lighing his house .

but why not make the panels which is used only for tapping solar power (uinlike the battery
which is used for many other purposes) affordable by subsidising them ?

may be the answer to all questions lies in the fact that thinking straight is not that simple .
and doesnt pay . yielding to lobyyiung probably does.

Tackling healthcare needs of the elderly

Vayomithram' project to get 24-hour helpline soon

Thiruvananthapuram: Accessing healthcare and hospitals is one of the major problems faced by the elderly. Despite the availability of free healthcare, the elderly often find it difficult to get to the hospital because of limited mobility and lack of support systems.

A scheme to provide medical care to the elderly at the doorstep, started off by the government a month ago, has thus emerged as a major relief to many who are either confined to their homes or who do not have anybody to take them to the hospital.

‘Vayomithram,' a project of Kerala Social Security Mission, intends to reach medical care to those above 65 years of age through a 24-hour helpline. The project which is being implemented in all Corporations and select municipalities in the State, has been generating good response in the city.

“The project has three components. One is the setting up of a 24-hour help desk and toll-free help line, which the elderly can call if they require some emergency medical need. The other two components are palliative-care home visits and setting up of mobile health clinics,” G. Sunilkumar, the District Programme Manager of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), who is also the district nodal officer for ‘Vayomithram,' said.

The palliative-care home visits and mobile health clinics on pre-fixed days are going on well.The toll-free phone line and the 24-hour help desk are in the process of being set up, inside the City Corporation office itself. These will be manned by three counsellors. An ambulance has also been readied.

The NRHM has deployed Junior Public Health Nurses (JPHNs) within the Corporation area, who, with the help of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), are being engaged in a survey of the elderly above 65 years in the Corporation area. “Right now, we are focussing on the 30-odd slum colonies in the Corporation area, where there are many elderly with serious morbidities. We already have taken a list of those above 65 years in these colonies and who requires what kind of services from us. Our mobile clinic team, consisting of one doctor and a nurse-midwife has been regularly attending to about 60 patients,” Dr. Sunilkumar said.

The mobile clinic is now being run four days a week on a fixed schedule and route. The ASHAs in the locality will bring the elderly patients to the clinic. Palliative care teams under NRHM are regularly servicing 18 locations in rural areas. The Social Security Mission has already handed over Rs.5 lakh for the project for the first three months.

Diabetes and hypertension seem to be the most common problems among the elderly, Dr. Sunilkumar said. Providing drugs regularly to those who require it has thus turned out to be a much bigger issue.

“We are collecting free drug samples from physicians towards a common pool. We would like to appeal to doctors, pharmacies and organisations to help us out in this regard,” he added.
