VVCC Counselor Selected for USDA Fellowship

Victor Valley Community College bilingual counselor Lorena Ochoa was recently selected as the 2009 recipient of the USDA E. (Kika) De La Garza Education Fellowship Program in Washington D.C. through a national selection process that is highly competitive.
Upon hearing about the selection, Ms. Ochoa said, "I feel honored and privileged to be selected for this fellowship out of the hundreds of distinguished people who applied from all across this nation." "I will use this opportunity to better serve our diverse student population to gain access and find success while attending VVCC. I know I will learn how to open doors to many new programs and support services that are available through the Federal government and that these resources will enhance the student experience and provide paraprofessional opportunities for the wider student population," she added.
The Fellowship program offers Ms. Ochoa the opportunity to experience first-hand the education policy making process and build linkages to research and funding prospects. Ms. Ochoa will spend the summer meeting with USDA personnel, and other federal agencies and organizations such as the Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The program presents people selected for the fellowship program with the opportunity to develop skills in student outreach and retention; career pathways; internships, scholarships, full time employment; graduate programs; grants and funding opportunities; partnership development; and governmental relations.
Ms. Ochoa received her Masters of Science in Counseling with an emphasis in Student Development in Higher Education from California State University, Long Beach in 2007. After graduation, she began working as a Title V Counselor with Victor Valley College. In this capacity she works with both general and ESL students where she provides counseling and additional services to encourage students' personal, educational, and career growth and development.
Ms. Ochoa was nominated for this distinguished program by Dr. Victoria Hindes, Executive Dean of Student Services and the recipient of the 2006 USDA E. (Kika) De La Garza Education Fellowship Program.
"I am positive that Lorena will gain valuable knowledge through this fellowship. It will allow her to be more aware of all the federal resources available to the college and our students," Dr. Hindes said. "It will also open lines of communication with Congress and help her access the legislative process," she concluded.

VVC instructor readies for groundbreaking tropical research on Southeast Asian island

Biology instructor Dr. Hinrich Kaiser waded through the tropical forests and farmlands of Asia’s youngest country "and liked it so much he’s taking his class on a "field trip" this summer.
For nine days Kaiser explored the land and got to know the leaders of East Timor, and is now ready to take Victor Valley College students to study the fledgling country’s wildlife.
East Timor, which achieved its independence from Indonesia in 2002, is the easternmost of the Lesser Sundra Islands and about 400 miles northwest of Darwin, Australia. The country encompasses only about 5,400 square miles with a population of about 1 million people.
The country’s geography is especially fascinating from a biologist’s perspective, because it sits at the point where Southeast Asian, Papuan and Australian plants and wildlife overlap, Kaiser said.
VVC students will travel to the island to collect some of those wildlife specimens and document their findings for peer-reviewed journals and professional publications.
"Based on the fact that hardly any research had been done in East Timor, we will bring back publishable data," Kaiser said, adding that students will primarily focus on amphibians and reptiles and their parasites.
Already the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History has expressed interest in hosting some of Kaiser’s East Timor collections.
Some students will join Kaiser through a Tropical Research Initiative certificate program he recently developed, and others may register for only the summer course, titled International Natural History.

RAMS MAKE HISTORY: VVC comes back, earns first playoff win

The same perseverance that got the Victor Valley College men’s basketball team into the playoffs was on display in front of about 650 screaming fans at the VVC gymnasium on Wednesday night.

The Rams charged back from a nine-point halftime deficit to beat Long Beach City College 87-83 in the first round of the CCCAA state playoffs.

When the clock ran out, fans rushed the court to celebrate the first postseason victory in team history.

"We have that will to compete and win; we never give up," VVC coach Tom Dudgeon said. "Without high-quality character there and sophomore leadership, we don’t pull that off. ... And without the support of the fans and the football program (several Rams football players and coaches attended), I don’t know that we’d pull that off, either. The crowd gave us that boost."

The Rams move on to face Citrus College on the road Saturday night at 7 p.m.

Rams sophomore guard Danard Crouch came up big with a career-high 31 points to go with four rebounds and two assists. VVC guard Dwight Gordon had a double-double with 22 points, 12 rebounds and three assists, and Rams forward Tim Sanders was a rebound shy of a double-double with 16 points and nine boards.

VVC (19-14) trailed for much of the game but began to chip away at the Vikings’ advantage in the second half. A Sanders 3-pointer gave the Rams an 82-81 lead with 2 minutes, 10 seconds to play. After a Long Beach foul, Crouch made one of two free throws to make it 83-81 with 1:25 to go.

The Vikings (15-15) tied it when Reggie Patterson made a pair of free throws with 25 seconds to play.

Rather than playing a half-court game and running out clock before a final shot attempt, VVC pushed the tempo and surprised the Vikings. Sanders broke free and took a long inbounds pass from Tory Dudgeon, finding himself all alone for the two-handed dunk that put VVC up 85-83 and drew a roar from the crowd.

The Vikings had 16 seconds left to tie it, but the Long Beach City ball-handler stepped out of bounds to return possession to the Rams. Crouch was fouled, missed the ensuing free throw and got his own rebound.

Crouch was fouled again and nailed both shots to put the game away.

Crouch hit four three-pointers in the game, and VVC hit 10 as a team - six of them in the second half. It was Long Beach City that had the hot shooting early on, sinking eight 3s in the first half but just one in the second.

"(VVC) made more plays than us," Vikings coach Gary Anderson said. "They made some big shots; we made some big mistakes. It was a hard-fought game, and they have a good team."

The Rams’ next task is not an enviable one; Citrus College is ranked No. 1 in Southern California and second in the state.

"(The players) do believe that we’re going to win Saturday night," Tom Dudgeon said. "That’s just who they are. They believe we’re going to win."

LONG BEACH CITY (83)

Patterson 20, Gwin 15, Whitney 15, Hurd 11, Ramos 9, White 7, Mitchell 6.

VICTOR VALLEY COLLEGE (87)

Crouch 31, Gordon 22, Sanders 16, Dudgeon 6, Wilson 4, McGrath 4, Stacy 2, Jones 2.

Halftime : Long Beach City, 54-45. 3-point field goals " Long Beach City 9 (Whitney 3, Ramos 2, Mitchell 2, White, Hurd); Victor Valley College 10 (Crouch 4, Sanders 3, Dudgeon 2, Gordon). Fouled out : Gwin (L).
RAMS Reach Postseason : 1st time in more than 20 years

The Victor Valley College men’s basketball team made the State Community College playoffs and will host a first-round game on Wednesday.
The Rams haven’t made the playoffs in minimum of 20 years playing in one of the toughest conferences in the state, VVC coach Tom Dudgeon said. The Foothill Conference boasts 30 more wins than any other conference in the state, and all five teams that made the playoffs get to host first round games.

VVC (19-12, 6-8 FC) finished fifth in the conference but had some quality wins to help it advance to the postseason. The Rams have beaten four teams with 20 or more wins this year.

"I knew there were still hopes," Dudgeon said. "But then to get a home game out of it, that surprised me more."

The Rams take on Long Beach City College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in their home gym on the VVC campus.

"I hope the community will come out and support a group of really good kids and really good basketball players," Dudgeon said. "We’ve got some local kids and I want to see this community come out and get behind these kids."

Former VVC Student publishes article in the Daily Press regarding Presidential Inauguration

The inauguration of a new President is always a major celebration in Washington, DC, but the inauguration of Barack Obama was the largest in the nation's history.
Two VVC students not only attended and witnessed the momentous event but wrote it up for the news. Yesterday (Jan. 20th, 2009) the Daily Press published an article by VVC grad Justin Boggs and his friend Brett Savage on the great day.
Teachers Are Heroes: Lucerne Valley Teacher Honored

Tournament fever helped raise the excitement level of the student body at Lucerne Valley High School when all gathered at a special school assembly to celebrate the newest "Teachers R Heroes" honoree, Linda Schlenz. Mrs. Schlenz, an English teacher, was equally surprised and overwhelmed by the support she received from students, teachers, staff, family, and friends during the ceremony sponsored by Victor Valley College, San Bernardino County Schools, and El Dorado Broadcasting.
VVC wins on field goal in overtime
October 4, 2008 - 11:31PM -- By TOMOYA SHIMURA, STAFF WRITER
VICTORVILLE : The Victor Valley College football team’s resiliency proved all’s well that ends well.
The Rams (2-3, 2-0 American Mountain Conference) beat Golden West College 34-31 in overtime as they rallied from a 13-point deficit with 4 minutes left in regulation.
Kelsey Davis made a 22-yard field goal on the first drive of overtime, before Eric Brinkley intercepted a pass for the win.
"W shot ourselves in the foot about 15 times in this game,"VVC head coach Dave Hoover said. "We had such a hard time getting it going."
"We just refused to give up. I’m just so proud of my team. This might be one of the great wins this school’s ever had. ... We played perfect football for 5 minutes."
The Rustlers got a touchdown with 4:23 to go in the fourth quarter to make it 31-18. But the Rams didn’t give up as Mel Carmichael scored on a 1-yard run with 2:29 left, and the VVC defense stopped Golden West’s drive in just 20 seconds to get the ball back.
VVC freshman quarterback O’Ryan Bradley completed two straight passes from the 50-yard line to get to the Golden West 7. Bradley went on to deliver a touchdown pass to Kenyatta Smith with 12 second left, and Davis made VVC’s first extra point to tie the game.
"We made plays finally late in the game, which we needed," said Bradley, who was 15 of 32 for 292 yards and added 45 rushing yards. "It wasn’t necessarily what I did, but it was everybody else around me that made me look good."
VVC outgained Golden West in total offensive yards 568-389.
Deandre Glasper and Carmichael each had two TDs and ran for 113 and 105 yards, respectively, for the Rams.
"We played a ridiculous preseason schedule," Hoover said. "They shouldn’t put us in this situation they put us in. We fought through it, now we are in league and 2-0. I couldn’t be more pleased."
Victor Valley College unveils theater upgrade

Article in San Bernardino SUN
Diana Sholley, Staff Writer
Article Launched: 09/30/2008 07:44:53 PM PDT
While the arts seem to be shrinking out of many school budgets, Victor Valley College hasn't felt the pinch.
Just months ago this oasis in the desert unveiled its newly renovated, state-of-the-art, two-story Performing Arts Center.
"The program has gotten so popular," said Ed Herberlin, one of the college's theater professors. "It grows more and more every year. Now we can accommodate more students and offer more classes."
Before the center's major transformation, production rehearsals were scattered around the city on five different campuses, or on-site after night classes.
This new building has room for everything. There's rehearsal space, a scenery workshop, a makeup room with a dozen lighted mirrors, showers and a place to make and store costumes.
It also has fully equipped rooms to train students in sound, electrical and lighting.
"Learning these skills, students can get a job or continue their education and get a degree," Herberlin said. "Students can begin their studies here. We offer so many aspects in theater, and it costs so much less than going to a university, and some kids just aren't ready for that environment. Here we offer smaller classes and more one on one time with the instructor."
The building also has classrooms with cutting-edge technology, private breakout spaces for small-group collaboration, communication/recording lab, computer room and storage space.
The center's existing 500-seat theater received a lobby makeover quadrupling its size and adding an outdoor foyer.
"The main stage is wonderful, but one of the problem's we had was that it's utilized a lot," he said. "The space is really in demand, and that limited our access."
Included in the revitalization is the Black Box Theater, which extended the theater program's accessibility, flexibility and supplied it with unlimited creativity. It's a square space with its walls painted black. The performance space can be configured into any shape including traditional, L-shaped and in the round.
Productions take minimal staging, scenery or special effects - the emphasis is on the story.
Mobile seating for about 100 allows an intimate experience for viewers.
"The audience feels like they are right there in the scene, and the actors can feel the audience," he said. "We can move things around easily and shape them to our needs."
The Black Box Theater allows for some experimental theater work, difficult to pull off on a larger stage.
"It's nice to have the choice," Heaberlin said.
According to the school's Web site, the renovations cost about $12.9 million with nearly $8 million being funded by a state grant and the school subsidizing the rest.
"No one expected the approval of the grant by the state," Heaberlin said. "I couldn't believe it. With our growth, it fills a huge need and gives us another opportunity to connect with the community. That's pretty wonderful."
NEW Puente Program begins at Victor Valley College

PROGRAM HISTORY:

Puente was founded in 1981 by Felix Galaviz and Patricia McGrath at Chabot College in Hayward. The program was launched as a grassroots initiative to address the low rate of academic achievement among Mexican American and Latino students. In an effort to understand the possible causes of this high dropout rate, Galaviz and McGrath reviewed over 2,000 student transcripts. They discovered three key patterns among Latino students:

students were avoiding academic counseling

students were not enrolling in college-level writing courses

students were the first in their families to attend college

The Puente model that McGrath and Galaviz designed to address these three problems comprised three components: rigorous language arts instruction, sustained academic counseling, and mentoring by members of the professional community. After an initial pilot of the program proved highly successful, the program was replicated in three additional community colleges. To date, the community college program has expanded to 59 sites throughout the state.
Based on its success with community college students, Puente received private funding to pilot its model in selected high schools in 1993. This pilot also proved highly successful, and the program has since been replicated in 33 California high schools.

VVC Wins Adult Spelling Bee!

Congratulations to the VVC Adult Spelling Bee team who successfully defeated a formidable cadre of accomplished spellers to take home the title... and dethrone the Daily Press who was defending their title. The Victor Valley Chamber Foundation Adult Spelling Bee was last night (June 16th) and we must admit that we recruited some incredible spellers.
Peter Allan, Laird Eklund and Bob Richey did all of the heavy lifting and some of those words were real humdingers. We won spelling "ATLATL" which is a type of spear throwing device.
Go Rams!!!
