When production of the van started in March, 1950, the German carmaker had no idea it would become a world-wide hit. With more than 10 million built, the purpose-built load carrier has evolved through five-generations to become today's Transporter, Multivan and Caravelle.

However, many of the original Microbuses are still on the road and craved by collectors. The first T1 split-screen model was powered by a rear mounted four-cylinder, air-cooled, 1.1-litre petrol engine that developed just 19kW and had a top speed of 100km/h.

The newest Transporter gets a range of turbo-diesel engines from 2.0-litres to 2.5-litres with outputs ranging from 62kW up to 128kW and top speeds of more than 160km/h. Although the design has evolved, the oldest and newest Transporter share the same badge at the front and a generous load area.

VW has toyed with the idea of a 21st century Microbus and whetted appetites in 2001 when it launched the Microbus concept. Unfortunately it has never gone into production.

Toyota to Reportedly Recall Prius Hybrid in U.S., Japan

TOKYO — Toyota will recall 270,000 Prius hybrid vehicles over brake problems in the United States and Japan, a report said Friday, while the beleaguered auto giant launched an investigation into possible problems with the brakes in two more hybrids including the luxury Lexus.

The recall would affect the new Prius hybrid model, and Toyota Motor Corp. would soon notify Japan's transport ministry and the U.S. Department of Transportation of the recall, Japan's top business newspaper, Nihon Keizai, said Friday.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK also said Toyota was considering a recall of Prius hybrids in the U.S.

(CNN) -- Honda has expanded an airbag recall worldwide, covering 2001 and 2002 Accord, Civic, Odyssey, CR-V, and selected 2002 Acura TL vehicles, the automaker said.

The recall also includes the Honda Pilot and Acura CL in the United States, and the Honda Inspire, Saber and Lagreat in Japan for the same model years.

On its Web site late Tuesday, Honda said the driver's airbag inflators might expand with too much pressure, which can cause the inflator casing to break and could lead to injury or death.

There have been 12 incidents related to an airbag inflator problem, Honda said.

The original recall was issued in July 2009, and included 2001 and 2002 Accords and Civics, as well as some 2002 model year Acura TL vehicles.

The global recall now covers more than 950,000 vehicles.

Honda said it will notify affected customers by mail and phone with instructions on how to have their vehicles inspected and updated at an authorized dealer.

Last month, Honda announced a separate recall of 646,000 2007 and 2008 Fit, City and Jazz models worldwide, after a fire hazard involving a power window switch resulted in a death in South Africa.

Toyota snuck this one in under the radar. Nowhere on any of the press schedules was there any mention of a Camry refresh for 2010 but, nonetheless, here it is.

Changes for 2010 include new front and rear fascias with a unique grille and bumper treatment for the Camry Hybrid to differentiate it from its less environmentally correct brethren. Larger headlamps and tail lamps are shared by both models.

Bigger changes lie under the hood where a new 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine replaces the previous 2.4 liter unit and horsepower has been upped from the current 159 to 169 for the LE and XLE trim levels while the SE gets additional tuning tweaks resulting in an additional 10 hp. The current 5-speed automatic is also shelved in favor of a six speed unit.

First Thai-Built Toyota Camry Hybrids Roll Off The Line

AUSTRALIAN PRODUCTION of the Camry Hybrid isn’t scheduled to begin until early next year, but petrol-electric Camrys are already being churned out at Toyota’s Chachoengsao plant in Thailand.
Destined to be sold throughout the South-East Asia region, the Thai-built Camry Hybrids wear the same headlights, tailights and sheetmetal used by the Aurion, although under the skin they’re virtually identical to the Aussie-market Camry.

Power is supplied by the same 109kW 2.4 litre Atkinson-cycle inline four and 30kW electric motor that powers the Japanese and US-market Camry Hybrids, which is the same powertrain that will be offered in the Australian-built cars.

Our Camry Hybrids will carry the distinction of being the first locally-built hybrid vehicles, and should offer a sound alternative to the soon-to-be-launched 2010 Prius.
As for styling, Toyota’s David Buttner described the Hybrid Camry Concept Vehicle that was unveiled at the Melbourne Motor Show in February as being “a strong pointer to the hybrid Camry we will manufacture right here in Australia from early next year”.

The Thai-assembled Toyota Camry hybrid which was displayed yesterday in a special ceremony will reportedly ship to India next year.

The Toyota Camry hybrid has its own tail lamp, headlamp and bumper, the three chief features apart from the ‘Hybrid Synergy Drive’ badge setting it apart from the regular petrol model. 9,000 of these cars will roll out of the Gateway plant in Thailand in the first phase with local deliveries scheduled in August.

Introduction

Typically, it will take seven to 10 years to recoup the price premium associated with hybrid cars. Federal tax credits can take a big chunk out of that premium, but as manufacturers like Toyota sell more hybrids, those credits disappear. Luckily for prospective buyers of the 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid, the price difference between the Camry Hybrid and a similarly equipped Camry XLE four-cylinder is negligible. In other words, save gas, save money.

Besides a price drop last year, not much has changed for the Camry Hybrid sedan since it was introduced for 2007. Utilizing the same fuel-sipping technology featured in Toyota's revolutionary Prius, this Camry provides the best fuel economy available in a traditional midsize sedan package, with an EPA combined estimate of 34 mpg. Plus, with its four-cylinder gasoline engine and electric motor combined, the resulting 187 horsepower provides acceleration quicker than most gas-only four-cylinder competitor sedans. In other words, save gas and go faster.

Beyond its powertrain and the eerie quiet that goes with its electric operation, the hybrid is virtually indistinguishable from a regular Camry. As such, expect a spacious cabin, a sizable features list and a driving experience that isolates you from the surrounding world. If you should prefer a more involving driving experience, though, the Camry Hybrid probably isn't for you, as its ride is soft and its steering light.

As a hybrid sedan alternative, there's the Nissan Altima Hybrid. It shares Toyota's hybrid technology but provides more feedback to the driver and is better to drive. It also provides a higher-quality interior and sportier styling for virtually the same price as the Camry. Unfortunately, it's only available in California-emissions states. On the opposite end of the driving excitement spectrum, Toyota's dull-but-frugal Prius offers similar passenger room, greater trunk space and better gas mileage for less money than the Camry.

So there are certainly factors to consider before signing on the dotted line for a 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid. However, with a price that makes sense for your bank account and gas mileage that makes sense for the environment, the Camry Hybrid, well, makes a lot of sense.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid comes standard with 16-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless ignition, an eight-way power driver seat, a 60/40-split rear seat, cloth upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with tilt/telescoping column, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a trip computer and a six-speaker stereo with a single-CD player and auxiliary audio jack.

Grouped together into various packages, Camry Hybrid options include a sunroof, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a four-way power passenger seat, a navigation system, satellite radio and a JBL sound system with a six-CD changer and Bluetooth.

Powertrains and Performance

The gasoline part of the Camry's hybrid equation is provided by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder producing 147 hp and 138 pound-feet of torque. The electric motor adds another 40 hp, for a grand total of 187 horses when driving conditions call for maximum power. The Camry Hybrid can also be motivated by electricity alone, but only under light throttle applications at speeds below 30 mph. Although rapid acceleration is hardly a priority for hybrid buyers, the Camry goes from zero to 60 mph in a respectable 8.4 seconds. Power is sent to the front wheels via a specialized continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Fuel economy is an impressive 33 mpg city, 34 mpg highway and 34 mpg combined. The Camry Hybrid is also an Advanced Technology Partial-Zero Emissions Vehicle, the cleanest possible rating for a gasoline-burning vehicle in terms of air pollution. In some cases, a city's air could actually be dirtier than what's coming out of this Camry's tailpipe.

Safety

The 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid features standard front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, a driver knee airbag, antilock brakes, stability control and traction control. In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash testing, the Camry Hybrid received five out of five stars in all front and side collision categories. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also awarded the Camry its highest rating of "Good" for frontal-offset and side collision protection.

Interior Design and Special Features

Although the Camry's cabin looks snazzier than in years past, the general quality has slipped a bit in terms of build quality and materials. It's still OK for most buyers, but we've come to expect better from Toyota, and more discerning customers should find the Nissan Altima Hybrid more impressive.

What it lacks in polish, though, the Camry Hybrid makes up for with space, quiet and comfort. While the regular Camry provides a serenely hushed environment, the Hybrid's ability to travel using only electric power makes it rival the moon tomb for quietude. The Camry's comfy seats and oodles of cubbies and compartments make it a very family-friendly environment. The hybrid system's battery packs chew into trunk space (10.6 cubic feet versus 15 in the regular Camry), although a 60/40-split/folding rear seatback provides some added utility when needed.

Driving Impressions

Driving the 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid can be a bit odd due to the CVT, electric motor and eerily quiet cabin at traffic lights. Unlike many other hybrids, though, the Camry Hybrid offers relatively brisk acceleration, meaning you don't necessarily have to sacrifice performance for good fuel economy. While the Camry offers a smooth ride and quiet cabin, its isolation takes a toll in terms of road feel and general driving dynamics.

       งานทั้งหมดเกิดขึ้นที่ Metal Crafters of Fountain Valley ในมลรัฐแคลิฟอร์เนีย และส่วนของเครื่องยนต์สันดาปภายในมีการดัดแปลงหลายอย่าง โดยเฉพาะการถอดชิ้นส่วนที่เกี่ยวข้องกับน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิงออกและแทนที่ด้วย ชิ้นส่วนสำหรับใช้กับก๊าซ CNG ซึ่งรถยนต์ต้นแบบรุ่นนี้วิ่งโดยใช้เชื้อเพลิงแบบเดียว ไม่ใช่ 2 ระบบ หรือ Bi-Fuel

       ใน ส่วนการทำงานของระบบไฮบริดก็ไม่มีอะไรเปลี่ยนแปลง เครื่องยนต์ 4 สูบ 2,400 ซีซี VVT-I ที่เป็นขุมพลังหลักของการขับเคลื่อนมาพร้อมกับความประหยัด และเมื่อจับคู่กับมอเตอร์ไฟฟ้าในการทำงาน สามารถรีดกำลังออกมาได้ 170 แรงม้า แต่นั่นยังไม่เท่ากับความประหยัดที่จะได้รับซึ่งเหนือกว่าระบบไฮบริดที่ใช้ น้ำมันเบนซินเป็นเชื้อเพลิง เพราะ CNG 1 ชุดจากการเติมจนเต็ม สามารถแล่นทำระยะทางได้มากกว่า 250 ไมล์ หรือกว่า 400 กิโลเมตร

       ส่วน ตัวเลขความประหยัดน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิงอยู่ที่ 13.4 กิโลเมตรต่อลิตรสำหรับการขับในเมือง 13.8 กิโลเมตรต่อลิตร และแบบผสมในระดับ 13.4 กิโลเมตรต่อลิตร แน่นอนว่าไม่ใช่ตัวเลขที่หวือหวาหรือน่าตกใจแต่อย่างใด เพราะคัมรี่ ไฮบริดที่ใช้น้ำมันเชื้อเพลิงก็ทำได้ประมาณนี้ แต่ถ้ามองในแง่ที่ของความพยายามในการมองหาพลังงานทดแทนเพื่อเป็นทางเลือก ใหม่ให้กับตลาดสำหรับแทนที่การใช้น้ำมันเชื้อเพลิง ถือว่า CNG ทำผลงานได้ดี

       นอก จากนั้นเรื่องของตัวเลขของความเป็นมิตรต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมก็น่าสนใจ เพราะว่าคัมรี่ ไฮบริด ซีเอ็นจี คอนเซ็ปต์มีระดับของการปลดปล่อยทั้งไนตรัสออกไซด์, คาร์บอนมอนออกไซด์, คาร์บอนไดออกไซด์ และนอน-มีเธน ออร์แกนิก แก๊ส หรือ NMOG น้อยกว่ารุ่นไฮบริดธรรมดา เพราะว่าจุดวาบไฟ (Flash Point) หรืออุณหภูมิของการจุดระเบิดของ CNG สูงกว่าน้ำมันเชื้อเพลิง ก็เลยทำให้สามารถออกแบบเครื่องยนต์ให้มีอัตราส่วนการอัดได้ ทำให้การเผาไหม้มีความสมบูรณ์มากกว่า

       โป รเจ็กต์นี้ไม่ใช่ครั้งแรกที่โตโยต้าให้ความสนใจกับการนำก๊าซธรรมชาติอัดมา ใช้เป็นเชื้อเพลิง เพราะว่าในปี 1999 โตโยต้าเคยพัฒนารถยนต์ที่ใช้ก๊าซธรรมชาติเป็นเชื้อเพลิงออกสู่ตลาด ซึ่งเครื่องยนต์ 4 สูบของรถยนต์คัมรี่ได้ถูกพัฒนาและปรับปรุงเพื่อส่งขายให้กับลูกค้าแบบ Fleet เฉพาะมลรัฐแคลิฟอร์เนีย แต่ก็ขายได้ไม่นานเพราะว่าในปีต่อมา โครงการนี้ถูกยกเลิกเพราะว่ามีความยุ่งยากในการหาสถานีบริการ และราคาน้ำมันตอนนั้นก็ยังไม่แพง แต่สำหรับสภาพปัจจุบัน ที่สถานีบริการ CNG มีเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่อง ทำให้พลังงานทางเลือกประเภทนี้ได้รับความสนใจอีกครั้ง

       นอก จากนั้น โตโยต้าเชื่อว่า CNG จะมีศักยภาพเพิ่มขึ้นในอนาคตทั้งตลาดสหรัฐอเมริกา และทั่วโลก เพราะว่ามีแหล่งสำรองในธรรมชาติเป็นจำนวนมาก และด้วยเทคโนโลยีที่มีอยู่ในปัจจุบันสามารถนำมาใช้ได้อย่างต่อเนื่องจน กระทั่งถึงปี 2100 แต่ถ้ามีการคิดค้นเทคโนโลยีใหม่ๆ ที่มีความประหยัดเชื้อเพลิงได้ดีขึ้น ก็น่าจะใช้กันยาวจนถึงปี 2200 เลยทีเดียว

Toyota รุกหนักตามแผนยุทธศาสตร์ทั่วโลกให้รถยนต์ Hybrid กระจายไปตามทุกมุมทุกแห่งของโลกวางโครงสร้างรถยนต์ประหยัดพลังงานให้ซึมลึก เข้าในสายเลือดผู้บริโภคเมื่อเกิดวิกฤตน้ำมันแพงหรือถึงวาระน้ำมันเหือดแห้ง ไป หวังยอดขายมากกว่า 10%ของเครื่องยนต์สันดาปภายในภายใน 2015 ขณะนี้รถ Toyota Hybrid มียอดขายมากถึง 1.7 ล้านคันเฉพาะปี 2008 และจะยิ่งได้รับความนิยมมากยิ่งขึ้นจากภาวะราคาน้ำมันพุ่งสูงขึ้นอีกครั้ง ไม่เกิน 1-2 ปีนี้

ขณะออกตัว
รถ ถูกขับเคลื่อนด้วยมอเตอร์ไฟฟ้าเท่านั้น ข้อดีคือการละเว้นใช้เครื่องสันดาปภายในที่ทุกครั้งสตาร์ทรถก็จะเกิดการต่อ ต้านแรงเสียดทานอย่างหนัก ณ ช่วงเวลาหนึ่งทำให้เกิดมลพิษสูง ณ ขณะนั้น
การขับขี่ด้วยความเร็วคงที่และการเร่งความเร็ว

ราคาจำหน่าย Camry Hybrid จะแพงกว่ารุ่นเดิมเท่าไร? ความทนทานและค่าบำรุงรักษาจะแพงหรือไม่?

Toyota พร้อมด้านการบริการเต็มที่ด้วยการจัดอบรมช่างผู้เชี่ยวชาญบริการหลังการขาย ,การเตรียมอะไหล่พร้อมทุกโชว์รูมและศูนย์บริการโตโยต้าทั่วประเทศ 308 แห่ง และจัดช่างเทคนิคพิเศษประจำ 5 ภูมิภาคในจังหวัดสำคัญ ๆ หากเกิดเหตุฉุกเฉินที่ช่างในศูนย์บริการไม่สามารถแก้ไขปัญหาได้

Hybrid expansion After the Europe-only Auris goes hybrid, expect the Corolla sibling to be next on Toyota's eco-friendly agenda

If you don't count the Prius - a dedicated model from Toyota with petrol/electric drivetrain - the D-segment (mid-size) Camry was the first mainstream family car to get hybrid power and is now available in the US, Australia and Asia including Thailand.
And now that Toyota has previewed such an eco-friendly system in the C-segment (compact) Auris as seen here thinly disguised as a concept, it's quite obvious that the Corolla would be getting one too.
While the Auris is a five-door hatchback tailored for mainly for Europe, the Corolla is the four-door saloon sibling which most global markets get like Thailand.
In fact, Toyota has made it a point in recent months that it wants to offer a hybrid version in all of its model offerings by 2020.
Does that mean the Corolla will get the hybrid unit of the Auris?

Roof-mounted solar panels recharges portable phones and audio essentials.

Very likely, if you take into consideration the existing engineering trends of Toyota. The Auris will get the Prius's 99hp 1.8-litre petrol/electric combination along with the CVT transmission. Actually, that basic four-pot petrol is used in the Corolla in Japan and will soon replace the more dated 1.8, seen in the Thai Corolla.
The Camry Hybrid uses a similar formula in which the petrol engine is a 2.4-litre petrol head found in the regular Camry and is coupled to two electric motors.
Toyota stresses that the Auris Hybrid is like the Camry Hybrid and Prius where the system is deemed as "full hybrid". In other words, it intends to say that full hybrid can run solely on either petrol or electric power, or a combination of both.
Are there more tricks than just the hybrid engine itself?
Since the Auris HSD is a concept, some features may prove to be costly to install into a mainstream model that's not supposed to carry much of a premium like the committed Prius. Otherwise, it could scare away buyers.
The items in reference are underbody panels, rear diffuser and wheels with slippery surface to enhance aerodynamics. Other measures include a 20mm lower ride height and low rolling resistance tyres.
Like the Prius, the Auris HSD features a roof with solar panels that generate electricity to recharged portable phones and audio accessories. In the future, Toyota elaborates that such a sun-inducing system would additionally recharge the hybrid's batteries.
The last energy-saving feature is LED lights, used on both the front and rear ends.
Will it be cleaner and more economical than an Ecocar?
Toyota wasn't very exact with the figures of the hybrid-powered Auris, but only says that emissions will be less than 100g/km. So, if the Prius emits 89g/km and achieves 25kpl as claimed by the manufacturer, then the Auris - and even the Corolla - could achieve similar levels of emissions and economy.
Yes, these numbers are better than Ecocar's requirement of not more than 120g/km and at least 20kpl. But don't be misled. A hybrid-powered Corolla won't be meant to be as an Ecocar candidate in Thailand. The Thai government has capped engine size of petrol-sippers at 1.3-litre.
Toyota wouldn't care either because while Ecocar is subject to 17% excise tax, the Corolla Hybrid - like Camry Hybrid - attracts a lower 10%.
Hmm... and when is the Corolla Hybrid coming out?
When Motoring first drove the Camry Hybrid, Toyota sources weren't reluctant to hide that the Corolla will be the next model to go hybrid - and in this generation with the possibility of also being assembled in Thailand.
As the Camry received the hybrid treatment at mid-life, expect the same to happen with the Corolla. And that could mean in less than two years for the Corolla in Thailand.
For a million baht or so: hybrid-equipped Toyota Corolla or diesel-powered Ford Focus? Let the conundrum continue.

Electric Motor Drive - Usually the motor(s) are used to drive the vehicle at low speeds where they are more efficient than a ICE. The motor also provides assist to the ICE for acceleration, passing or hill climbing. This allows a smaller ICE to be used. The motor is typically sized only to get the vehicle up to about 25 miles per hour and to cruise at that speed. Only 10-15 miles may be driven at that speed in the all electric mode.

Regenerative Braking - The electric motor shuts down during braking and coasting. Then the wheels drive the motor and the motor acts like a generator, charging the batteries.

Automatic Start/Shutoff - The engine automatically shuts off when the vehicle comes to a stop. The motor starts when the accelerator is pressed to start up again. The division of power between the engine and motor is controlled by a computer to balances the power as needed.

Internal Combustion Engine - The ICE is usually smaller than the engine in a conventional car because it is not used as much for acceleration. Only the ICE is used to power the vehicle at cruising speeds. The motor comes on to assist it during passing or hill climbing, if there is a demand for it. A portion of the engines power is also used to charge the batteries if needed.

As the best-selling passenger car in America for seven years running and 11 of the past 12 years, Camry continues to redefine standards for comfort and performance.The 2010 Camry and Camry Hybrid scheduled to go on sale in March, have an array of enhancements, inside and out, including exterior styling, performance, safety, audio and convenience features.

A new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine equipped with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) will produce 169 hp for Camry, LE and XLE grades. The new engine can be combined with a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift. A powerful 3.5-liter V6 delivering 268 horsepower is also available.
