Watch the live webcam of the La Palma Volcano Eruption (19th September 2021)

A volcano in La Palma in Spain’s Canary Islands erupted on Sunday at 3.15pm in the Montaña Rajada mountains in the municipality of El Paso. A tremor hit the Las Manchas neighborhood before the volcano spewed out a great plume of smoke and ash. The magma caused two cracks in the mountain to open up, which both contained lava.

The eruption on Sunday occurred in an uninhabited mountainous area, sparking small forest fires. Around 50 people with reduced mobility in nearby areas were evacuated before the volcano erupted. The regional health department said this group was safely transferred to El Fuerte, an old barracks, and is currently receiving care from health services and the Red Cross.

Fewer foreign tourists have come to Spain this summer season than in 2017, which was a record year for the sector. International arrivals numbered 9.98 million in the month of July, a 4.9% drop from the same period last year.

Spain’s biggest markets have been sending fewer visitors: the number of British tourists fell by 5.6% in July, while there was a 11.4% drop in visitors from France and 6.2% from Germany.

Barring natural events – such as the emissions from the Iceland volcano that paralyzed air traffic for several days in April 2010, slowing down visits to Spain by 13% – the figure for July 2018 represents the biggest decline in international tourist arrivals since 2009, when the economic crisis led to monthly drops of between 10% and 15%.

However, the July figure of 9.98 million international visitors is only “low” compared to last year’s all-time high of 10.5 million. The 10-million threshold has been crossed three times in recent history, twice in the month of August and once in July.

August is traditionally a slow month for the Spanish labor market, as many summer jobs get axed in the hospitality and retail sectors. But this year has been worse than others, newly released figures show.

Unemployment rose by 47,047 people from July, the biggest rise on record for a month of August since 2011. The official number of people without a job is now 3.18 million: 1.3 million men and 1.87 million women.

Job creation also experienced its worst month of August since 2008, with average Social Security affiliations reaching 18,839,814 after 202,996 jobs were cut.

In August, affiliations grew in health and hospitality, but fell in education, manufacturing and construction. Among the self-employed, there was a 0.55% drop in affiliations, down to 3,249,275.

Broken down by regions, Social Security affiliations grew in the Canary Islands, Asturias, Cantabria and in the North African cities of Ceuta and Melilla, located along the northern coast of Africa. The biggest drops were in Catalonia, Madrid, the Valencia region and Andalusia.

There were 1.6 million new job contracts signed in August, a 4.3% rise from the same month last year. But of these, only 153,921 were permanent contracts, representing 9.61% of the total. Although this is less than one out of 10, it is still a 33.4% rise from the same period last year. Of the permanent contracts signed last month, 92,963 were for full-time positions and 60,958 for part-time jobs. There were 1,448,574 fixed-term contracts signed.

Overall, 2017 has seen significant improvement in the Spanish job market with the number of people signed on with the country’s social security scheme – a key indicator of net job creation – up by over 630,000, a rise of 3.58%. And the unemployment rate is down more than 10 percentage points since the peak of the country’s economic crisis, although at 16.4% it remains among the highest in the European Union and among developed countries in general.

Simon Manley, British Ambassador to Spain, today issued a statement to the English-language media in Spain which serves British nationals living in the country.

He said:

“I am very aware from the questions that we have been getting that some Britons living in Spain are uncertain about what the Referendum result means for them.

“As the Prime Minister has said, there is no immediate change. You still have exactly the same rights. You can still live and work here, travel back and forth in the same way, and access Spanish healthcare and other public services just as before.

“There is no change to your residency status, nor any need for visas for travel to other EU countries, and you don’t need to change your passport. Your pension rights continue.

“Leaving the EU will be a gradual process. The Prime Minister will continue to do his job for the next three months. The UK will only begin negotiations with the European Union after we have a new Prime Minister in October.

“He or she will have to decide when to start the process of leaving the EU. The negotiations could take two years or more and until they are concluded, the UK remains a full member of the European Union.”
