Up to seven premises at the Yumbo shopping centre in Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria have been destroyed by a fire that broke out in one of the venues in a fire that started at 08:20 this morning (Monday, 6th May 2013). No one has been injured in the blaze. The cause of the fire is unknown at the moment. Four different fire crews attended the blaze using over 9,000 litres of water. The area affected is on the second floor under the mini-golf. Given the time of the start of the fire, all of the premises involved in the fire were empty.

Update : It is reported that a young British person has been arrested for questioning about the fire and it is alleged that he may have started the fire after an argument where he made a threat to the owner of one of the premises over his involvement in a firework display.

The Canary Islands main unions (UGT, CCOO, Intersindical Canaria, FSOC, STPA Canarias, STU, COBAS, USO) yesterday threatened to call a general strike in the Canaries in protest over the unemployment levels in the islands which has reached 34.27%, over one in three people are now without employment. The protest is said to be not only against the Government of Spain, but also against the President of the Canary Islands Government Paulino Rivero.

In the presentation of the events, which is planned for the 1st of May, the general secretary of UGT in the Canary Islands, Gustavo Santana, said that the current unemployment rates are "more than enough" to call a general strike in the Canaries, because the regional government has "great responsibility" in all that has happened to the islands. "It is not true that the only blame lies with the central Government" he added. According to the union, the Canary Islands Government has "turned its back" to the social reality of the islands, as it makes policies that, after five years, are seen to have "totally failed". In his view, the general strike is "taking shape more than ever" because, without a change in policy, the Canary Islands will plunge into a social and economic depression.

Mr. Santana went on to say "The general strike will act to reject these policies, but also to denounce the prevailing business culture in the Canary Islands, which is that of dismissal. Even with the tourism sector scoring above 90% throughout this period, all it has done is destroy employment."

"The Canary Islands government and their employers are bound for a general strike and we will take our time to set the date, because we will go to all the businesses and workplaces to explain who has responsibility in all of this" he said.

Occupancy rates for the coming weeks are 80% as explained by Mr. Alonso, who explained that this route meets a demand for 4 and 5 star hotels because it favors the arrival of tourists who prefer to travel first class and stay at 'higher level' establishments on the island.

Also, Mr. Alonso has stated that the tourist occupancy for the Easter season will reach 80% on the island, a percentage that is "a little below last year". According to the Minister, the hotel industry is happy with the arrival of tourists and expected to run out of places to fill with lates local market. The Minister went on to complain about AENA's attitude towards British Airways new route because they would not authorise a press conference for the presentation of the inaugural flight at the Tenerife South airport.

Update 31st March 2013 @ 19:30 - The IGN has now confirmed that this mornings earthquake at 10:59:54 WAS recorded at 4.9 degrees on the Richter scale. On its website it has initially reported this quake at 4.9 degrees but then corrected the data saying that it had only been 4.6 degrees. It has now confirmed that its initial assessment was correct and has changed the data back to 4.9 degrees. This makes todays earthquake the largest recorded in the whole process which began in 2011.

Update 31st March 2013 @ 16:30 - An earthquake which was wrongly reported as 4.9 degrees on the Richter scale which hit the island of El Hierro this morning was corrected by the IGN as being a 4.6 degree quake. This earthquake, which took place at 10:59:54 this morning (local time), had its epicenter in the sea to the west of the town of Frontera at the point where the greatest concentration of earthquakes in recent days has taken place. The quake, which was felt on the island of La Palma, was at a depth of 20 km and occurred just an hour after another earthquake measuring 4.5 degrees. The IGN performs a continuous review of the data published on its websites which is why at first it had indicated that there had been an earthquake of magnitude 4.9 and subsequently updated the information and said that it had been 4.6 degrees. The president of the Cabildo of El Hierro, Alpidio Armas said that the earthquake has caused some landslides on the road to Sabinosa in La Dehesa.

Update 30th March 2013 @ 10:30 - The IGN (Nationa Geographic Institute) recorded last night 51 small earthquakes, one of which was been felt by the population on the island of El Hierro. The most powerful of these earthquakes occurred at 00:30 this morning at a depth of 19 kilometers, with a magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of these earthquakes is in the sea, as in previous days, west of the town of Frontera, with depth varying between 14 and 25 kilometers. Of the 51 earthquakes recorded between midnight and 08.11 this morning, nine exceeded magnitude 3, thirty ranged between 2 and 3, and two did not reach 2 degrees Richter. In total yesterday, Friday 29th March, there were 184 earthquakes, a hundred of them with a magnitude greater than 3 degrees Richter, including one of 4.7, the highest in the earthquake/volcanic process which started in 2011. The direction of the Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk in the Canary Islands (PEVOLCA) has kept the 'yellow light' of seismic risk in place on the island.

Update 29th March 2013 @ 17:30 - There has been an earthquake on the island of El Hierro registering 4.7 degrees on the Richter scale that has been felt by the population of the islands of El Hierro, La Palma and in places of Tenerife. It happened today (Friday) at 17:00 (local time) and was at a depth of 20km at latitude 27,7 y longitude -18,3.

Update 28th March 2013 @ 09:00 - The Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk in the Canary Islands (Pevolca) has changed the 'traffic light' system for warnings of seismic activity from green to yellow on the island El Hierro and has closed roads on the island which may be exposed to landslides due to quakes or tremors. In a statement released last night, Pevolca announced the change of the warning state and road closures of the HI-500 and HI-400 , at El Tomillar. According to the Cabildo of El Hierro, the Los Roquillos tunnel has been closed at Frontera and closed the road for traffic between the HI-50's Cruce de La Tabla and Sabinosa and access to the La Madera beach. These measures were taken after the earthquakes recorded yesterday afternoon reached a magnitude of 4.6 degrees on the Richter scale, the highest in the whole process of the 2011-2012 eruption and seismic spikes that have taken place since. The Emergency Coordination Centre Control Room (CECOES-112) received several calls regarding some landslides in the area of Guinea, as explained in a press release, which noted that "there was no warnings related to infrastructure damage or injury to people. ". The quake was recorded at 15:07 hours yesterday afternoon, with an epicenter in the sea to the west of La Frontera.

Update 27th March 2013 @ 11:00 - During the night El Hierro has been hit by another wave of earthquakes, 49 in total, none of them felt by the population of the island, according to data collected by the National Geographic Institute (IGN). The most powerful of these small earthquakes occurred at 05:51 this morning and had a magnitude of 3.3 degrees on the Richter scale. Just three minutes later, there was another 3.2 degree quake at almost at the same coordinates. As in previous days, the epicenter of these earthquakes is in the sea, to the west of the town of Frontera, at a depth of between 15 and 16 kilometers deep. Of the 49 earthquakes recorded since midnight, three exceeded a magnitude of 3 degrees, 44 ranged between 2 and 3 degrees and two did not reach 2 degrees (Richter). Yesterday there were 200 earthquakes, 15 of them with magnitude greater than 3 degrees.
%CODE13%
Update 26th March 2013 @ 16:00 - The Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk for the Canary Islands (Pevolca), has decided to maintain the 'traffic light' system which determines the danger to the population of the island of El Hierro at it's 'GREEN' status because, in their opinion, the current seismic activities do 'not pose a risk to the population'. Despite this, scientists have said that their is a '75% chance' of the island experiencing an earthquake of up to 4.3 degrees (Richter), but discard any risk to the population because the phenomenon is currently located 10 km. from the coast. The Canary Islands Government is meeting today in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to analyse the seismic activity data from the island.

A 45 year old woman who managed two real estate companies on the island of Lanzarote has allegedly defrauded up to 17 people interested in buying properties on the island, mostly foreigners, of around €1 million between 2007 and 2011. The woman was arrested on the 4th February (2013) after the Costa Teguise Guardia Civil finished their investigations in September 2012.

It is alleged that the woman, from Tias in Lanzarote, received large amounts of money to buy real estate on the island, making customers believe that the purchase had been made, when this was not true. In addition to this, she improperly appropriated money that they had paid for the payment of property transfer tax, which was also never paid, and sometimes even charged a monthly community fee on the non-existent property.

In a statement, the Guardia Civil said that in some cases, the foreign victims had 'acquired' these properties for investment purposes, for tourism rentals and were not for residential purposes. Through their investigations, the Guardia Civil have located up to 17 victims of the alleged scam in five different countries: 9 people from Ireland, 4 in England, 1 from Italy, 2 Spanish people and 1 person from Germany.

The new earthquakes detected on the island of El Hierro since Sunday (17th March 2013) have so far been located in an area where there has previously not been any seismic activity. The new activity has been detected to the west of El Golfo opposite Pozo de La Salud. The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has recorded more than a hundred earthquakes, most with magnitudes above 2.0 on the Richter scale since the beginning of this new phase of magmatic process.

A spokesman for the National Seismic Network, Emilio Carreño said that the biggest earthquake detected had a magnitude of 3.1 degrees on the Richter scale and other above 3 degrees with "many felt by the population of the island."

According to Mr. Carreño, who said yesterday that the epicenter of the earthquake was on the ground (not at sea) and to the northwest of the island. "At the moment the earthquakes have been detected at a depth of 15 kilometers" he added.

Finally, in terms of change in the location of the epicentre, Mr. Carreño said that it is normal for the epicentre to move the release of efforts from one place to another on the edge of the crust and recalled that the entire system is interconnected.

12 illegal immigrants arrived at the island of La Palma yesterday (Tuesday, 12th March 2013). They travelled on board a 'cayuco' type boat and are reported to have departed 18 days ago from Bakau in Gambia. The Guardia Civil say that most of the illegal immigrants travelling on board the boat are from Gambia although some may be from Senegal and Mail. The boat was spotted by a fisherman on a beach near the La Veta area in Tijarafe, La Palma.

The twelve immigrants are in good health, although two of them had to be treated by medical staff after showing signs of dehydration. The boat, about 12 metres in length, was found to contain empty fuel canisters and two outboard motors. It has now been taken by Marine Rescue to the harbour of Tazacorte.

Gran Canaria and Tenerife South airports are to follow Barajas Airport which has begun installing machines to charge passengers one euro for the use of luggage carts as part of an initiative which AENA hopes will save €3.2 million per year. AENA claims it has "no date" for the implementation of the payment for the use of baggage trolleys at Barajas airport, which will become the first of the seven airports where the company intends to implement this new system.

The airports that will charge for the use of trolleys will be at Madrid - Barajas, Barcelona - El Prat, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Gran Canaria, Tenerife South and Alicante. AENA has gone on to say that the new system only apply the so-called "public area" of the airports, as the boarding area will remain free of charge. AENA went on to say that this new model of management and maintenance of baggage trolleys is part of the measures put in place to "add value to the company in order to make it sustainable and economically viable while maintaining the supply of a quality service."

According to AENA's calculations, the Barajas airport currently spends €3.7 million per year to the "management and maintenance of luggage trolleys" and with this new work model this amount will be reduced to €500,000 which means an estimated cost savings of €3.2 million.

AENA management has said that the price of €1 to use the trolley is similar to that of other European facilities, such as the German airports of Munich, Hahn, Cologne and Dusseldorf, the Italian airports of Milan, Genoa, Turin and Rome (Fiumicino) and in Athens in Greece.
