California Closets Chief Design Officer, Ginny Snook Scott was kind enough to join me yesterday to share the top trends in remodeling, the importance of remodeling our homes to add value and how we can do so on a budget!

Candace Rose: With May being 'home remodeling month' and summer being right around the corner, what areas of the home should people invest in when remodeling this season?

Ginny Snook Scott: "Well, with the summer coming on, people are always thinking about how do they get organized and get everything together? But often times thinking about a big project like taking on a kitchen or a bathroom can really seem too overwhelming. So we actually suggest working with a small area of the home that you maybe interact with on a day-to-day basis such as a pantry, the garage, perhaps a closet, media center or home office- all areas that California Closets can help people out in getting organized."

Candace Rose: Are you seeing an uptick in remodeling projects or new home builds?

Ginny Snook Scott: We're so excited because we're actually seeing an uptick in both areas right now. 2012 is showing one of the best years for growth and remodeling projects since 2006, and in February 2012 we actually have information from MarketWatch, that permits pulled for new home builds were up 5%, which is actually the highest it's been since 2008. So people are getting really excited about remodeling and they're really looking at it as if they're staying in a home that they've been in- so for instance we have nearly 30% of people have not moved homes in the last five years and that are not really looking to move in the next year or so- so they're thinking about how to take a space and maximize it by using something like a guest room as a multifunctional space. So perhaps turning it into a room that would be a guest room; a home office; perhaps turning it into a media area and what's really nice is a customized solution can actually give you the opportunity to have a desk, a wall bed so that it still becomes a guest room and a media center. And it becomes a room you can use many, many different ways and it adds value to your house, so when you do sell you get that back as a return."

Candace Rose: According to the Pew Research Center there's been a 10% increase in multigenerational homes. What can families do to maximize their living spaces?

Ginny Snook Scott: "Again, it's that multifunctional space and really thinking about how you can take a room and use it in a multiple of different ways. So a bedroom isn't just a bedroom anymore. We're seeing people incorporating desks, armoire, entertainment centers and having spaces really serve for many different uses. I think also taking a look at how you can have an area for instance like a garage be well organized so that you're not having to utilize the space in your home for things that could be stored out in the garage. So building in cabinetry, having extra areas where you can have pantry items there really can make a big difference as well."

Candace Rose: What are some of the top trends you're seeing in remodeling projects?

Ginny Snook Scott: "One of the things we're really seeing is how people are incorporating style and decor into the cabinetry that they're putting into their home. You go back 15/20 years the cabinets were either just brown or white, and we're seeing that people as they look at doing- whether it's a closet or an entertainment center- using some beautiful textured woods, a combination of colors- working with a lot of gray tones and dark tones. But perhaps getting them exciting and stylish by putting a beautiful pop of color in with a drawer face or a door face and a beautiful tangerine or citron color, so it really adds some style to the decor."

Candace Rose: Is it possible to remodel our home stylishly while sticking to a budget?

Ginny Snook Scott: "It really is. I think what people get frustrated with when they start remodeling or organizing for instance they go out and they buy little pieces, containers, different items that add to the decor; but what they do is they end up spending a lot of money getting a lot of different pieces that really don't pull it together. The big secret is working with an expert and having it done as a holistic approach and often times it can be far more affordable doing it that way. Working with a California Closets design consultant is a free appointment and so really it's a great way to get an idea of what you can do in a space and often times it will surprise you at how affordable it can be."

Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you'd like to share?

Candace Rose: With summer almost here, what are some simple tips for cooking up a great barbecue?

Rich Hollenberg: "Well, one of the things that I like to do is eliminate stress, that's the most important thing for me. If you're having a party it's supposed to be fun, even when you're planning. Candace, what I've done is I've come up with three S words to make it easy for everybody to remember to throw a great backyard bash this summer time and they are: smart, savory and sweet.

So we'll start with smart. It all starts in the pre-planning when you put together a grocery list or a menu list of what you want to serve your guest when they show up. And when you go to the grocery store it would be nice to earn some cash back from whatever you're buying, so the Chase Freedom credit card allows you to do that. Through June 30th you can earn 5% cash back on purchases at your grocery store up to $1500. So, Candace, that means even if you're having the hugest family reunion or graduation party you're still going to be smart with your money and not overspend."

Candace Rose: What are some budget friendly ways to wow our guests?

Rich Hollenberg: "Well, that brings us to food. I don't think you have to spend a fortune on food, I just think you need good quality food and when you're making your menu up, I like to be traditional because usually that means everybody is going to be happy. You don't make a lot of different things for different people, so I start with hot dogs. I think they are universally loved because people can personalize them with whatever they want on top, but you have to start with a great hot dog and I always like to start with Ball Park Angus Beef Franks. They're big, bold, really juicy and tasty and it's kind of like that ultimate guy food where you can put ketchup and mustard on top or you can go all the way with chili and cheese and peppers and onions and pickles and relish - you name it. But if you start off with a good quality hot dog like that, I think basically everybody is going to be happy."

Candace Rose: Do you have any suggestions when it comes to dessert?

Rich Hollenberg: "I certainly do; that's my third S. We've covered smart, we've covered savory and now we move on to the sweets. I think you'd be missing the ball if you let people leave your party without dessert. I grew up on Sara Lee pound cakes and they've really one-upped themselves now because now they make that great pound cake in either original or double chocolate flavor, and they make them individually wrapped in pre-sliced, so it's easier than ever. And here's my biggest tip for the summer time and since we're talking about grilling hot dogs, you could also grill your dessert believe it or not. Take those pound cake slices, put them on the grill for about a minute on each side (not really very long at all) and it gives it a nice toasty texture and then you can do what you want with it. You can make it a little healthier and go with maybe Greek style yogurt and seasonal fresh berries or you can make it a little more decadent if you have a sweet tooth and go with whip cream and chocolate syrup. But either way I think that is the ultimate summer time treat."

Candace Rose: Do you have any suggestions when it comes to entertaining so we're not behind the barbecue and we actually get to enjoy ourselves?

Rich Hollenberg: "That's very important to me. You have to enjoy your own party just like your guests are and it's not just about food, it's also entertainment bang for your buck. I found a 3M mobile projector that could give you outside that same big screen movie experience that you have inside. Believe it or not Candace, this is about the size of a remote control and yet if you project it on to any blank wall like the side of any house or even a garage door it can get up to 80 inches diagonally, so that is a really big screen experience and all you need to do is hook it up to an iPad; an iPhone or an iPod or maybe if you don't have one of those you can hook it up to a laptop or a computer and you can play movies that you've bought or downloaded, you can play home videos, you can even do a photo slide show of your family and your friends."

Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you'd like to share?

Rich Hollenberg: "Well, the only information is keep it simple. I never go out of my way; I'm never sweating, I'm never stressing. I don't want to bend over backwards, but at the same time I want everyone to enjoy and you want people to walk away from the party thinking 'man, that was really fun' and at the same time you can enjoy yourself too. Keep things simple, follow those three S': be smart, have savories and have sweets, and I think you'll have a great backyard barbecue."

Candace Rose: What are the latest trends and must haves on LuxeYard in terms of fashion?

With Memorial day just a few short few days away, many of us will be heading to the beach for some well deserved rest and relaxation! Lifestyle expert and TV personality Justine Santaniello joined me to share her beach bag essentials for your summer getaway!

Candace Rose: With summer approaching, trips to the beach are a must! What are some of your favorite items to pack in your beach bag?

Justine Santaniello: "What I think it really comes down to, Candace, for beach bag essentials is you want to be organized, you want to be prepared so that you can actually relax. But I know a lot of women out there, they still want to do it with style. They still want to be trendy, even though they're being organized. So I've come up with my beach bag essentials for you guys to kind of let you do both of those things.

I think the best place to start is with the beach bag itself. This is going to be the thing that you are bringing with you whether you're going to the beach or to the pool or to the lake. You're going to be having this on you quite often. You want something that you like and expresses yourself. I don't know about you but I know that I have owned many of those standard plastic ones with the tropical punch colors or the pictures of the palm trees on them, but those are kind of outdated. They're not the best quality, so this year I say update the beach bag that you have to something more retro looking- that's very popular right now to have a retro looking beach bag. So for example one of those big straw totes- they're classic, they're retro, they're on trend and then you can always personalize it by tying a little pattern scarf on it or something like that to make it your own. You can choose one in a straw color, but definitely look into updating your actual beach bag."

Candace Rose: What are some of the essentials that we need to pack?

Justine Santaniello: "When you are picking a new beach bag, make sure you get one that is big enough for everything you're going to need that's lined on the inside. With all the elements- the sand, the water, you don't want anything getting ruined on the inside of your bag. And make sure you pick one that has inner pockets.

Here's what you want to start with in the bag: You want to have a bag within a bag- one of those smaller travel pouches. The big retail stores, they're all carrying those resort lines. The ones that are a little bit more exclusive and usually more expensive are all creating collections for the big retail chains that are more affordable for people like us- 'the everyday woman'. You could get a smaller bag and put that in a tie dye pattern or a geometric that's so trendy and popular right now.

And here's what I want you to keep in the smaller bag: In addition to your cellphone or your car keys or credit cards- those smaller really important items that you don't want to lose and fumble around in your bigger tote. You also want to keep smaller beauty and hygiene products in there. This is what it comes down to Candace, us women, we want to look good even when we're at the beach- I'm not saying a full face of makeup or anything like that. I'm talking about smaller essentials, but here's the key: that's going to let you go out after your day at the beach, because I want to go for some drinks; I want to go to a family barbecue. I don't want to have to run home to look pretty or freshen up. So keeping these smaller items on you like a tinted lip balm- one that has SPF in it you're protected, but has a little bit of a color so that if you're applying it afterwards you can use that almost like your lipstick. Smaller facial SPF's, colored bobby pins to keep the hair out of your face. Bobby pins are so inexpensive and you can pick them up now in neons, which we know are so popular. And then also the items that are going to keep you fresh like oil blotting pads for your face because we can get really oily in the sun or deodorant. Women ask me a lot in the summer time- what deodorant they should be using? Should they be switching to one now that they're going to be having more skin exposed and you're going to be sweating, so I kind of want to clear the air on this right here.

The one that I am using, the one that I recommend- Dove actually has a new deodorant, it's called ClearTone, and this is why I like it- now in addition to the obvious the protection that we're all looking for (the 24 hour protection) it has an added bonus in there, it's going to reduce those dark marks. We all know as women we're shaving a lot more in the summer (and this goes for everyone) and your skin is sensitive. We can get a little bit of irritation from that, so this is going to reduce the dark marks, it's going to help to even the skin tone. They have a lot more info for you on Dove.com. You can pick which one is best for you, but again keep a deodorant on you because you don't want to go home to have to freshen up or go take a shower after the beach. So this just allows you to kind of go out afterwards. Keeping those small beauty items on you to keep you looking good."

Candace Rose: When it comes to sunscreen, what level SPF do you recommend?

Justine Santaniello: "Well, here's the thing with sunscreen- keeping in mind that they're not all created equal, some SPF's (the body ones especially) they can irritate the more sensitive skin on your cheeks or your nose or your neck- especially those spray on ones. You want to test out the SPF before you actually get to the beach. Test them on your wrists, that's the perfect place to test beauty products in general, but especially SPF's. Pick up one that's hypoallergenic and then the number level really depends on your skin tone. If you're somebody who has more of an olive complexion and you don't burn as easily, you can get away with a 30 or a 15. I don't recommend going any lower than 15. But if you have a lighter skin tone, you burn easier, you're going to want to pick that number up. And obviously keeping another SPF if you're traveling with kids. You're probably not going to use the same SPF that you're putting on your children, so you want to make sure you have a higher number there for the kids and keeping in mind to have a special facial moisturizer just made for the face and neck, and then just one for the body. When it comes to the body, choose one that's a spray to help you get that full coverage but it's also making sure you pick one that's sweat and water resistant so you don't have to keep reapplying quite as much during the day. You should always reapply but if you pick one that's water and sweat resistant, you don't have to reapply quite as much."

Candace Rose: We all know the importance of protecting our skin from the sun. What can we do to protect our hair?

Justine Santaniello: "You definitely want to protect the hair as well. The best way is thinking of things that do 2-in-1 protection like for example- a hat. You don't necessarily want to have your face out there exposed all day, and believe it or not that goes for the same thing with our hair. Hats protect the hair on your head as well. When you're looking for which hat you want to be bringing with you- how about updating the hat? It's the same concept as the beach bag and how I told you to update your beach bag. Instead of those huge floppy sunhats that maybe our grandmothers used to wear, what about a straw fedora? So this is going to still be wide brimmed, it's going to protect your face, protect your hair, but you're going to look a little bit cooler wearing it. It's a little bit trendier, a little bit edgier. We don't want to look like our grandma's, we want to be up to date.

In the same vein as spicing up your beach bag basics, flip flops. Instead of the plastic flip flops that I know can be very inexpensive, if you spend just a little bit more money you can get a really nice leather pair. And here's what you're going to get from leather flip flops- you're not going to get blisters, you're going to probably be able to wear them for more than one season instead of having to throw them out and again, you're going to look a little bit more grown up and not like everybody else on the beach that has plastic flip flops. So take a look into updating to leather flip flops."

Candace Rose: With Memorial Day right around the corner and summer vacations near, do you have any tips for those traveling with their families?

Justine Santaniello: "Yes, when traveling with families it's important to keep in mind the basics that you're going to need for the kids. We touched having a specific SPF for your children, but maybe keeping another bag with you- a plastic bag, again that's lined on the inside with the essentials for your kids; so their beach toys; if they still need floaties, if they're not able to swim on their own and then the importance of having snacks and water with you when you're at the beach. I recommend that for everybody, but especially if you're traveling with small children. It's very easy to get dehydrated so you want to make sure that you're keeping water on hand and keeping snacks because they're probably to get hungry; they're running around, they're in the sun, but nothing too crazy. Cut up some fresh fruit before you leave and put it in a Ziploc so it's very easy to throw out at the end or some granola bars- things that you can easily pack up and take with you on the go."

Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you'd like to share?

Justine Santaniello: "Again, I think it's all about spicing up the beach basics that we've all had and updating them. Here's a cover up alternative- instead of doing that glitzy cover up that's super girly, you can do a man's shirt. So not only do you look kind of cute in it, they're not expensive (they're probably about $20) or if you have a guy in your life you can just borrow his. It's kind of an updated version and the concept of going out after your day at the beach. If you don't want to run home, which was what I was recommending, try a maxi dress because not only can these act as a great cover up, then you can throw it on at the end of the day and wear that out as your outfit. So you're kind of getting 2-in-1 there with a maxi dress. I think hopefully all of these things combined is going to keep you organized, keep you prepared and also do it in a stylish way so that a day at the beach can really be a day at the beach."

Interview: Women's Health 101 & Simple Ways to Become Healthier with Dr. Roshini Raj

Board certified Gastroenterologist, Health magazine Medical Editor and Today show contributor Dr. Roshini Raj (Roshini Rajapaksa) joined me recently to discuss simple ways we as women can improve our health and the steps we need to take to do so!

Candace Rose: What are some things that we as women can do to become healthier?

Dr. Roshini Raj: "Well number one the theme of this week is it's your time and that means we are empowering women to really prioritize their own health. You know, women take so much time taking care of those around them they often neglect themselves and that's a big issue. So we really want to encourage women to get to the doctor for those regular checkups, not engage in risky behaviors like smoking or not wearing seat belts and one of the two keys to good health is really exercise as well as nutrition."

Candace Rose: And when it comes to physical exercise, do you have any tips on starting an exercise routine that we can actually stick with?

Dr. Roshini Raj: "Yes, absolutely. We know that exercise has so many health benefits including preventing heart disease, cancer, now dementia (possibly) and it's really important to get into a daily exercise routine, but I know it's not easy. When you're first starting out you might be a little out of shape, you might experience some aches or muscle pain, and one way to address that is a topical over-the-counter solution like Aspercreme. There's no embarrassing odor, which is good for us women and it has been clinically proven to relieve muscle and joint pain, minor pain and even arthritis. So you want to address any pain you may have; you want to talk to your doctor if you're going to start a more intenser regimen, but really I say small changes can make a big difference. So just starting to move more, walk more- whether it's taking the stairs instead of an elevator or parking a few blocks away from work so you have to walk at least 10 minutes to work and back, things like that can really make a difference."

Candace Rose: What can we do to prevent injuries?

Dr. Roshini Raj: "Well, I think stretching is really important- both before and even after exercise. People don't realize, but stretching after exercise is important. You want to keep the circulation to the muscles so you're less prone to injuries, but also talking to your doctor as well is a great way to prevent any major injuries."

Candace Rose: Do you have any tips on diet and eating right?

Dr. Roshini Raj: "Absolutely. Nutrition is one of the keys to really maintaining good health, and recent studies show that one out of three adult Americans do not meet their daily nutritional requirements. So women especially need to be aware of this and healthy snacking is a great way to get those nutrients. One great snack that I love is a beverage- it's a new beverage called Ensure Clear which basically has 21 minerals; three times the proteins of juice; no fat, which is of course wonderful. It comes in Blueberry Pomegranate or Peach flavor which are delicious! It's just a very quick, convenient way to get those vital nutrients and minerals.

And then when we're actually talking about something you can actually chew on, I love Golden Raisin regular raisins. California raisins are naturally sweet- there's no sugar added; they have fiber and antioxidants, which we know are so important for our health. Candace Rose: What can we as women do to improve our mental wellbeing and gain confidence?

Dr. Roshini Raj: "I think in general, women need to manage their stress better and first of all recognize the stress that they're under. As women often if you're a working mom or you're a stay-at-home mom there's a lot of stress involved there; caring for elderly parents as well. I think talking to people about your stress is very important, whether it's friends or loved ones or even a professional counselor or a support group. And then there's certainly things you can do on your own to manage stress like exercise which I think is a wonderful stress reliever, as well as yoga or meditation- these are all ways you can address your stress so that it doesn't affect you not only mentally but stress can have physical affects as well."

Candace Rose: Do you have any additional tips or information you'd like to share?

Dr. Roshini Raj: "Well, I think that sleep is also something that a lot of women don't think about, but good sleep is very important when maintaining overall health, as well as weight control and mental health. So you really want to try to get at least seven to eight hours of sleep a day and make sure it's good quality sleep. And to learn more you can go to the site News2Know.com."
