Candelas have a fund of €5m available to finance suitable lighting retrofiit projects in Ireland and the UK.

The availability of this fund means that clients can invest in reducing their energy costs, whilst improving their lighting, without spending any money. The energy savings are guaranteed by our energy performance contract, and the savings are guaranteed to meet the project repayment costs.

As experienced and independent providers of lighting systems into the poultry sector, Candelas were delighted to accept an invitation from Teagasc to speak on energy efficient lighting at the recent Energy Efficiency in Agriculture conference held in Kilkenny.

Candelas' MD Sean Hyland made an informative presentation on the benefits of energy efficient lighting in the Agri sector, illustrated with case studies of their own projects. He went on to talk about the pros and cons of different lighting options available, and especially with fast developing LED technology, and some of the issues to be considered around the use of LED solutions.

Measures

Lighting only retrofit involving the removal of existing incandescent lighting and replacing it with dimmable fluorescent T5 corrosion proof fittings, including diming systems and waterproof distribution boards. The lights were hung using a catenary wire suspension system, and wired using seven-core cable for maximum dimming flexibility.

Contract

The ESCO assembled a group of farmers, and applied for co-funding from SEAI. The ESCO guaranteed energy savings of 65% (typical, depending on each farm’s existing installation) based on a direct reduction in lighting load. Further savings associated with the use of dimming were not included the guarantee due to the added complexity of verifying savings.

Cost meters also installed on lighting circuits and farmers trained in their use.

The farmers paid 50% to the ESCO up front, and 50% on installation and verification of energy savings.

The reduction in lighting load was verified by measuring the power drawn by the lighting circuits before and after the installation. Lux levels were also measured before and after to demonstrate light levels were the same or better. The ESCO’s guarantee is that if the energy savings are less than those guaranteed, the ESCO refunds the difference between actual and guaranteed savings.

The SEAU grant, once received by the ESCO, was returned to the farmers as a rebate.

Benefits

The ESCO assembled a group of farmers with a common need to create a viable project of sufficient scale to justify its management time. The farmers’ risk was reduced by the performance guarantee. The new lights have a longer life, and associated lower maintenance costs. The dimming feature has saved energy and improved light management; anecdotal evidence suggests bird weights, mortality rates and bedding costs have improved (currently the subject of further research).

T12 lighting technology is now being phased out. Since April 1st 2012 the T12 lights are being withdrawn. The short term effect will be to push up the price of T12 bulbs as stocks run out, and then users will need to retofit their T12s with more efficent technology.

There are a number of options including T5 and some high quaslity LED products - Candelas can provide independant advice and retrofit options.

SEAI launched this years BEW grant in a series of seminars last week. We were delighted to see that last years nationwide poultry lighting project was featured as a key case study, as it was a unique multi beneficary project delivered across 44 different sites.

This year SEAI are seeking applications across multi technologies that will preferably feature an element of Energy Performance Contracting ,(EPC) and third party finance.

Candelas are submitting more than one application this year,and are seeking partners to build innovative multi technology projects that use our lighting expertise, as well as our EPC experience and our access to third party finance.

Candelas has now completed the lighting retrofit of 44 broiler sheds under the Better Energy Workplace scheme. Grant chqs are being processed and will be with the farmers before Christmas.

The project is saving over 550,000 kwhs annually and will cut farmers lighting energy costs by up to 80%. Candelas are continuing to monitor the lighting energy use at each location to verify the projected savings.

Paul Mooney of the Farmers Journal, writes in this weeks edition about the success of Candelas in securing the 35% SEAI grant for retofitting efficient lighting in 70 broiler sheds.

"Candelas lighting solutions will save a farmer up to 74% of lighting energy costs. In a small broiler shed of 200 x 48 ft this will mean approx €1500 a year in energy costs saved each year"

The piece goes on to quote Sean Hyland, MD of Candelas as saying " Even though the grant scheme expires in December, we are already booking sheds for retrofitting in January, because the energy savings and light uniformity are important to most farmers"

Energy consumers will be able to make safer and more cost-effective decisions with holiday lighting, by following the recommendations outlined below:

1. Switch to safe, long-lasting, energy-efficient LED (light emitting diode) holiday lights whenever possible.

2. Use a timer to reliably turn off lights during daylight hours and other specified times.

3. Don't overload your electric circuits. Check fuses or circuit breaker panels to see what your home can handle, and stay well within the limits.

4. Adhere to manufacturer designations and locations of use (indoor vs. outdoor).

5. Outdoor lighting should have insulated electrical cords and be plugged into a ground fault interrupter-protected receptacle only.

6. Avoid stringing more than three sets of lights together and plugging into a single outlet.

7. Make sure there's a bulb in each socket of a light string, even if it is burned out.

8. Keep your natural tree well-watered to prevent bulbs from igniting dry branches. Never use electrical decorations on metal trees.

Candelas Lights the way for export growth

Almost through its first full year of trading, Mayo-based start-up Candelas is looking beyond Ireland to the UK and German markets in order to grow the business. The company specialises in lighting solutions that reduce energy use and lower running costs.

In the past year, the company has conducted 200 audits and turned 20 per cent of those into revenue-generating work. Candelas claims it can identify average savings of 70 per cent in commercial sites, which use a lot of lighting. The company has also been active in agriculture. Lighting carries a significant cost overhead to farmers running broiler chicken houses and piggeries. Candelas' pitch is that by combining innovative design with integrated lighting control systems, a famer save energy, reduce costs and enhance animals' welfare and productivity.

The company has already fielded enquiries from Europe and is working towards selling to sites initially in the UK and Germany in the coming months. It has appointed sales staff in the UK market, and MD Sean Hyland has a network of business contacts in Holland and Belgium through which he plans to approach the German market. "The plugs and voltages may be different but the use of lighting control to save money and create ambience is common to all," he said.

Hyland said Candelas will most likely look to tackle international markets through joint ventures - either with electrical contractors, lighting manufacturers or even government bodies. "We're looking at a model where a customer of an energy supply company could get a retrofit of their premises done, up to a certain amount, and use their bill to pay back the cost," he said. China to phase out incandescent bulbs

China pledges to phase out the 1 billion inefficient incandescent light bulbs that it uses annually. The 100w and above bulbs will be banned from October 2012 with 60 watt and above banned from October 2014.

China estimates this will save 48 billion kilowatt hours of power per year and reduce carbon emissions by 48 million tonnes.

Light accounts for 19% of electricity use worldwide and this could drop to 7% if there was a similar ban worldwide, say the Global Environment Facility Fund. The EU, Australioa and Brazil are already phasing out the inefficient bulbs, but interestingly the USA seem to be questioning their previous position, and have stripped all funding for government enforcement of improved lighting efficiency standards, which come into force next year.

Despite this welcome move incandescent bulbs still make up at least 50% of worlwide bulb sales, and it appears China will continue to manufacture and export 3.85 billion per year, depite phasing out their use at home.

Grant secured for poultry lighting retrofits

Candelas have secured a grant to support the retrofitting of energy effcient lighting in 70 poultry broiler houses nationwide. The new lighting will reduce farmer's lighting energy costs buy up to 75%, is dimmable, and provides improved and uniform light levels in accordance with EU animal welfare directives.

The grant is for 35% of the cost of the installed lighting and has been awared by SEAI under the Better Energy Workplaces scheme. Growth patterns in LED market

A piece of market research conducted in the US says LEDs will take 40 per cent of the global lamp market in 2013 but will begin to contract by 2018.

The report, conducted by US consultancy IMS research, predicts that with long life and energy efficiency underpinning the success of LEDs, the longer life of LED lamps will mean that, as more are installed, the smaller the market will become as replacement lamps will not be required in the short term.

According to the research, the growth rate for LED lamp shipments from 2009-2015 is forecasted to be 97 per cent, while the growth rate from 2015 to 2020 will slow to 13 per cent.

Installing occupancy sensors in areas not used all the time like stairwell, toilets etc, will reduce lighting energy use, but they can also significantly shorten the lifetime of the bulb, especially if it is fluorescent. Check your lights are dimmable and always get expert lighting advice or your energy savings can be lost in extra maintenance costs.

Candelas Ltd agree deal with Silverstream Nursing homes to design and supply new energy efficient lighting solution in the Ratoath Nursing Home. The capital cost is being repaid from the monthly energy savings that are delivered by the lighting. By unlocking the future energy savings, this project is cost neutral for Silverstream.

Not replacing strip fluorescent bulbs , or removing them from a fitting will reduce light levels but will not reduce energy consumption at the same rate, as the ballast continues to draw most of the energy.
