“Italian chocolate magnate Pietro Ferrero has died in South Africa after an apparent heart attack while cycling.”

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini was quoted saying, “Italy has lost a businessman who represented the best qualities of our economic history,” in response to his death.

Ferrero makes confectionery products such as Ferrero Rocher Chocolate and Tic Tacs.

How to make Pop Rocks

Ever want to make your own Candy? or Pop Rocks for that matter? Its easy to get started with these few simple items. Chickflix has posted a great instructable on how not only to make these unique candy treats but how to master them! Here are the ingredients you need to get started on this Pop Rocks Recipe.

~ 2 Cups Sugar
~ 1 Tsp Baking Soda
~ 1/4 Cup Citric Acid Crystals (Can be tricky to find. If your local gourmet/country store doesn’t have them, try here .)
~ 1/3 Cup of Corn Syrup
~ Small amount of Water (Just enough to get sugar wet)
~ 1/4-1 Tsp Flavoring (any extract will work. Use what you like! When using stronger flavors such as cinnamon, mint, and cherry, you can use a small amount (about 1/4 teaspoon). Subtler flavors such as lemon, strawberry, orange, and peach require more (1/2 to 1 teaspoon.)
~ A Few Drops of Food Coloring of your choice
~ Candy Thermometer (Make sure it is properly calibrated. Put some water on to boil and put your thermo. in. Bring the water up to boil and see what the temp. is when it starts boiling. You may have to adjust the paper inside to set boiling point to 212°F. Then you know it’s ready to go.)
~ Medium sized Saucepan
~ Whisk
~ Pastry brush
~ Powdered Sugar
~ Large Cookie Sheet
~ Zip-top plastic bag
~ Blunt Instrument ( i.e. hammer, brick, lead pipe, etc.)

Today is National Licorice Day.

Licorice is one of the sweetest candies getting its sweetness from the root extract of Glycyrrhiza glabra. This is known to be up to 50 times sweeter than sucrose.
The Glycyrrhizan in licorice has positive health benefits including cough suppression, the loosening of phlegm from the lungs (as an expectorant), soothes irritation and inflammation in the stomach, and can work as a mild laxative. While small amounts of licorice, such as those found in candies are not a risk, large or medicinal amounts of licorice for extended time can have negative health affects.
Anise Seed is a common substitute for licorice especially in the U.S. The taste is almost undetectably similar, but lacks the benefits of real licorice.
Licorice was used by the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Chinese, and Hindus and is commonly considered a delicacy among many European countries.
Some famous people who were big fans of licorice include Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and Napoleon Bonaparte who was rumored to eat so much licorice in battle that it would turn his teeth black.
