This has been an amazing year at Cangelosi, celebrating 40 years of award winning expertise in commercial and residential projects throughout the U.S. We appreciate your business and look forward to an exciting summer and fall.

Soapstone Countertops

Soapstone, also called steatite, is a metamorphic rock found all over the world. Its high talc content makes it one of the softest of all metamorphic rocks. It has been used for centuries for intricate carvings and elaborate buildings, which many have withstood the test of time.

This is a naturally quarried stone, which has many applications within residential and commercial building. Soapstone countertops, soapstone sinks, masonry heater and flooring is among the most popular uses of this rock.

Builders and homeowners are now showing new interest in this amazing material, not only for its natural look and feel, but for its functionality over other natural products.
Soapstone countertops are among the most owner friendly natural products. Although soapstone is softer than most countertop materials it is very dense and nonporous. Unlike granite countertops a soapstone countertop will not stain and will not be damaged by hot pots or common household liquids like citrus, wine, acids or chemicals. That’s right you can clean your natural soapstone countertop with common household cleaners!
Soapstone countertops are limited on the variety of color. Most untreated soapstone comes in varying shades of gray. Remember, when choosing your soapstone countertops, it will darken once your stone is sealed.

Your soapstone countertop can be sealed with mineral oil; however some owners don’t apply any type of sealant to the stone, which allows it to take on its own natural patina.

Eco-friendly stone finds favor as building material

As architects and engineers embrace more environmentally friendly building design and construction, advocates of sustainable development are rediscovering natural stone.

After years of negative press, natural stone is enjoying a resurgence as architects, designers and engineers recognize its superiority as a building product, and that it may be the most sustainable of building materials.

More structures being built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards are using natural stone.

Consider the facts:

Stone improves energy efficiency. Natural stone has mass that absorbs ambient temperature. That means stone can “store” cold from air conditioning systems and warmth from heating systems, evening out temperatures and reducing the heating/cooling cycles needed to maintain comfort levels.

Stone is naturally beautiful. Unlike artificial surfaces, stone is not manufactured using petrochemicals or other volatile compounds. It does not use special pigments or artificial colors. And, the choices are nearly limitless if designers and architects consider all the varieties of stone available: granite, marble, sandstone, limestone and others.

Stone can have a small environmental footprint. Modern extraction techniques have made quarries more efficient and reduced their environmental impact. Plus, a growing number of quarries restore the environment after they extract the stone. And, if stone is quarried within 500 miles of the building site, it has a fairly low carbon footprint, often better than that of building materials shipped in from across the country or around the world.

Stone is virtually indestructible. A goal of sustainable construction is to build a structure that will last. As millennia of experience show, stone can survive the toughest environments.

Stone is recyclable. While it lasts forever, if a homeowner grows tired of a particular stone, it can be reused elsewhere in the home or outdoors, as paving material.

Anyone interested in using natural stone in their LEED project should ask a few key questions:

Where was the stone quarried? Look for material quarried within 500 miles of your project.

Does the quarry restore its environment? Most quarries have embraced restoration efforts.

Was the stone processed or fabricated in an environmentally friendly way? Technological improvements make this possible.

Doing the research may take a little time, and the number of sustainable, natural stone options is growing. They offer an incredible variety of practical and beautiful options to make a design statement in the most energy efficient buildings.

Compounding that challenge is the growing and changing landscape of the certification programs now, and currently being, developed. By using a Materials Matrix Evaluation form to examine specific attributes of a proposed green material, professionals can “grade” products based on their project and client goals and requirements, instead of those purported by the product supplier.

Vito Cangelosi’s Famous Meat Balls and Red (Tomato) Pasta Sauce

Meat Balls:
1 1/2 lb. ground beef
1 cup Progresso Italian bread crumbs
1/2 cup Parmesan grated cheese
2 eggs
1/2 cup Italian Seasoning
1 cup chopped sweet onions
5 large garlic cloves coarsely chopped
Add salt and pepper to taste

Mix well in a large mixing bowl and make into eight meat balls. In a heavy fry pan coated with olive oil, on medium heat, sauté the meat balls, gently turning until all sides are browned. They should not be cooked through and through as we want the sauce to permeate them and complete the cooking.

Red Pasta Sauce:
1 whole sweet onion coarsely ground
4 or 5 finely ground garlic cloves
1 small can tomato paste
1 large can tomato juice
1/2 to 3/4 cup Italian seasoning
2 or 3 dried cloves
2 or 3 dried bay leaves
2 table spoons of sugar (3 if you like things on the sweeter side)
Add salt and pepper to taste

In a six to eight quart stock pot, pour a solid layer of olive oil and heat oil on low to medium heat. Add onions and brown. Add garlic as the onions begin to brown and sauté for about two or three minutes. Add tomato paste. Stir constantly, being careful not to burn the paste. Cook for about 4 to 5 minutes until the paste becomes darkened. Pour in the tomato juice and stir on low heat until the paste and juice are blended well. Add the remainder of the seasoning, as you continue to stir the sauce on low heat. Add meat balls being careful to not let the sauce splash and burn you. Cover the pot and bring to a boil on low to medium heat. Lower the heat to simmer and cook for one hour. Be sure to stir the pot about every five minutes to make sure it is not cooking too high. I like to remove the lid for the last 15 to 20 minutes to keep the steam from thinning down the sauce.

My choice for this sauce is a good quality large spaghetti (Skinner or Barilla). Forget about the cooking instructions on the package. In an eight quart stock pot, fill half way with water. Add about 1/4 cup salt and about 1/4 cup of olive oil. (The oil will keep the pasta from sticking.) Bring water to boil on high heat. Lower the heat to medium and add 1 lb. spaghetti. (I usually break the pasta in half over the pot as I place it in the boiling water). You must stir constantly and taste after approximately four minutes. The pasta must be “al dente” (chewy to taste) and not soft. As you continue to taste the pasta, when it begins to soften, cook for another one to two minutes. Immediately pour into a colander in the sink and rinse with cold water to get the paste from the pasta and to stop the cooking process. (In a white sauce, we want the paste from the pasta to become part of the sauce. That is for another day) Pour pasta into a platter and spread some red sauce over it. Place the meat balls around the pasta and garnish with grated Parmesan cheese. Serve immediately.
