As the Facility Manager at Canine Cabana and a proud dog parent, my terrier mix Luna has not only stolen my heart but also taught me some powerful lessons about responsible pet care. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned through Luna’s journey is the critical role regular dog health checks play in maintaining long-term wellbeing.

Why Do Regular Dog Health Checks Matter?

Dogs can’t tell us when something feels wrong. That’s why routine dog health checks, both at home and with your veterinarian, are essential for detecting early signs of illness, discomfort, or abnormal growths. Small changes often go unnoticed until they become serious issues.

At Canine Cabana, we believe proactive care is key. This is why we conduct wellness and dog health checks for all our furry guests while they’re in our care.

A Personal Lesson from Luna

While professional dog health checks are important, it was a personal experience with Luna that truly reinforced how vital they are.

In January, during one of our usual play sessions, I noticed a small red bump on the roof of Luna’s mouth. It wasn’t something she reacted to, but it didn’t look right. Trusting my instincts, I scheduled a veterinary appointment immediately.

At first, the vet wasn’t sure what the growth was, so we decided to monitor it closely. Over time, it slowly grew and began forming between her front teeth — confirming that something wasn’t right.

Early Detection Made All the Difference

By April, Luna underwent surgery to have the growth removed. As a nervous dog mum, I documented her recovery with photos, hoping for the best. Thankfully, the biopsy revealed it was an epulis fibroma, a common and benign oral growth in dogs.

Although Luna had part of her gums and a few teeth removed, she made a full recovery and is now back to her happy, playful self.

This experience highlighted just how important early detection through regular dog health checks can be. Catching the issue early meant timely treatment and a positive outcome.

How Canine Cabana Prioritises Dog Health Checks?

At Canine Cabana, Luna’s story reflects our everyday commitment to dog care. Just as I carefully watch over Luna, our team closely monitors all dogs in our facility. We keep an eye out for changes in behaviour, physical appearance, appetite, and energy levels.

Our regular dog health checks help us identify potential concerns early and ensure every guest stays happy, healthy, and safe while in our care.

Dog Health Checks at Home: What Pet Owners Can Do?

Between vet visits, pet owners can play a vital role in maintaining their dog’s health. Simple dog health checks at home can include:

Checking your dog’s mouth, gums, and teeth

Feeling for lumps, bumps, or swelling

Observing changes in behaviour or appetite

Monitoring energy levels and mobility

Even something as simple as a belly rub can become an opportunity to spot early warning signs.

A Final Thought on Proactive Dog Care

Luna’s journey is a gentle reminder that regular dog health checks are an essential part of responsible pet ownership. Whether done at home, at your vet, or during a stay at Canine Cabana, proactive care can make a life-changing difference.

By staying attentive and acting early, we can help ensure our furry friends enjoy long, healthy, and happy lives — just like Luna continues to do.

Traveling with your dog can seem like a fun idea, especially when you want to include them in your adventures. Whether it’s a road trip, a flight to a new destination, or a visit to family or friends, the thought of having your furry companion by your side is appealing. However, there are a few reasons why it might not be in your pet’s best interest to join you on every trip.

As dog owners, it’s important to make decisions that prioritize our pets’ safety, comfort, and well-being. At Canine Cabana, we understand how much you love your dog and want them to be happy, but traveling may not always be the best choice for them.

Here Are Some Reasons Why You Should Think Twice Before Taking Your Pup On Your Next Trip:

1. Travel Stress and Anxiety

For many dogs, the stress of travel can be overwhelming. Whether it’s a long car ride, a flight, or a change in environment, the unfamiliarity of new places and situations can cause anxiety.

Dogs are very sensitive to changes in their surroundings. The loud noises, crowded spaces, and unfamiliar people and animals can create feelings of discomfort. While some dogs may adjust to travel with ease, many others experience increased anxiety during trips. This stress can manifest in a variety of ways, including excessive barking, drooling, trembling, and even nausea. If your dog is already prone to anxiety, travel might exacerbate these symptoms and lead to a distressing experience for both you and your pet.

2. Health and Safety Concerns

Traveling with a dog can present certain health and safety risks that might be hard to manage. For example:

Motion Sickness: Just like humans, some dogs suffer from motion sickness during car rides or flights. If your dog has never traveled long distances, they may experience nausea, vomiting, or drooling, making the journey uncomfortable and potentially harmful.

Temperature Sensitivity: Dogs are more sensitive to temperature fluctuations. Hot or cold weather during travel could lead to overheating or hypothermia, especially if they are confined to small, poorly ventilated spaces like car seats or luggage compartments on airplanes.

Exhaustion: Travel can be physically draining for dogs, especially when it involves long trips or time spent in unfamiliar environments. This could lead to fatigue, dehydration, or a weakened immune system, making your dog more susceptible to illness.

Injuries During Travel: Whether it’s from being in an unsecured carrier during car travel or from the hustle and bustle of an airport, dogs are more vulnerable to injury during travel. Smaller dogs can easily be stepped on, jostled around, or hurt in situations where they don’t have enough space to move freely.

3. Potential for Infectious Diseases and Parasites

When traveling, your dog may be exposed to new environments that could harbor viruses, bacteria, or parasites. While you may not think about it, places like airports, rest stops, hotels, and even public parks can be breeding grounds for harmful pathogens. Small dogs, whose immune systems may not be as strong as larger dogs, are at a higher risk of contracting diseases from places they aren’t accustomed to.

For example, contact with other animals, such as at a hotel or dog-friendly café, could expose your dog to illnesses like kennel cough, parasites like fleas or ticks,or even more severe diseases, depending on the area. This is especially concerning for dogs that are elderly, immunocompromised, or unvaccinated.

4. Disruption to Their Routine

Dogs thrive on routine. They rely on consistent mealtimes, bathroom breaks, and familiar surroundings to feel secure and comfortable. Travel, on the other hand, can throw off your dog’s routine entirely. A lack of familiar spaces, regular exercise, or quiet time can leave your dog feeling stressed, disoriented, and overwhelmed.

Most are sensitive to disruptions in their schedules, and long periods in unfamiliar places can make them anxious or agitated. Even the excitement of being in a new location can leave them feeling confused and unsettled, as they might not know how to navigate the new space or where to go for relief.

5. Restrictions and Rules About Pets

Many places, from hotels and airlines to public transportation and tourist attractions, have strict rules about pets. In some cases, you may be forced to leave your dog in a crate or carrier for extended periods, which can be uncomfortable for them, especially if they are not used to being confined. Some transportation options, like buses, trains, or planes, might not even allow pets at all—or may charge expensive fees for their travel.

Even if you find pet-friendly accommodations, it doesn’t always mean that the place is ideal for your dog. Not all hotels, for example, have designated pet areas or provide the necessary amenities to ensure your dog’s comfort and safety. Additionally, certain public spaces may not allow dogs, and you may find it difficult to enjoy your trip if you need to constantly accommodate your pet’s needs.

6. Lack of Space and Comfort

Traveling means your dog will likely spend a significant amount of time in a confined space, whether in a car, airplane, or train. Being confined to a carrier or unable to move around freely can cause physical discomfort and mental distress.

While some dogs might handle travel well, others may find it physically limiting and exhausting. During long car trips, they may not be able to stretch out, lie down, or adjust to a comfortable position. In flights, they may be confined to a crate for several hours, which can add to their stress and discomfort.

7. Your Dog’s Comfort at Home

While traveling can be exciting for you, it’s essential to consider that your dog may feel more comfortable staying at home in a familiar environment. Dogs often experience less stress when they remain in their own space, surrounded by their favorite toys, familiar smells, and a regular routine. Dog boarding at a reputable facility like Canine Cabana can offer a safe and comfortable environment for your dog while you are away.

At Canine Cabana, we provide dog daycare services designed to keep your dog comfortable, entertained, and well-cared-for while you travel. Our experienced staff ensures your dog gets the attention and care they need, helping them feel safe and relaxed while you’re gone.

Is Travel Really Worth the Stress for Your Dog?

While the thought of traveling with your dog may seem tempting, it’s important to consider the potential stress, discomfort, and health risks involved.

At Canine Cabana, we prioritize your dog’s comfort and safety, offering a peaceful, caring environment where they can thrive while you’re away.

As dog owners, it’s natural to want the best for our pets — providing them with love, care, and a healthy, happy lifestyle. For small dogs, however, living in a world full of different sights, sounds, and people can sometimes be overwhelming. The key to helping small dogs navigate new situations with confidence lies in one of the most important aspects of pet care: socialization.

Dog Socialization refers to the process of introducing your dog to various environments, people, animals, sounds, and experiences in a way that encourages positive associations. Proper puppy socialization helps small dogs feel more comfortable, less anxious, and better equipped to handle the world around them. At Canine Cabana, we recognize that pet socialization is essential to your dog’s happiness and overall well-being.

Why Dog Socialization is Crucial for Small Dogs?

While all dogs benefit from socialization, small dogs or puppies, in particular, can be more sensitive to changes in their environment. Due to their size, small dogs can develop behavioral problems if they are not exposed to new situations and environments in a safe, positive, and controlled manner.

Confidence Building
Small dogs can be more cautious or fearful in unfamiliar environments. Whether it’s the bustling sounds of a busy park, the noise from traffic, or simply meeting new people, small dogs can feel overwhelmed in new situations or when faced with novel stimuli.By exposing your dog to different environments in a controlled and gradual manner, you’re teaching them that new experiences are not to be feared but rather explored with curiosity. Over time, your dog will become more comfortable and confident when faced with the unexpected, allowing them to handle various situations with less stress.

Reducing Anxiety and Stress
Small dogs are often more prone to anxiety when faced with new surroundings. This anxiety can manifest in various ways, such as shaking, barking, or trying to hide. Without proper puppy socialization, these anxiety-driven behaviors can become ingrained, making every new experience feel overwhelming.Socializing your dog to different environments can reduce anxiety by exposing them to new places and situations in a calm, positive way. This teaches them that not all change is scary or harmful. As a result, they’ll feel more at ease during future outings and in unfamiliar places.

Preventing Behavioral Problems
By socializing your dog early and consistently, you can prevent many behavioral issues from developing. A dog that has been socialized to a variety of people, dogs, and places is less likely to bark or exhibit fear-based behaviors when faced with unfamiliar situations. Whether you have a new puppy or an older dog, it is never too late to start working with them.

Better Interactions with People and Other Dogs
Puppy Socialization helps small dogs learn how to interact appropriately with both humans and other animals. Many small dogs may feel intimidated by other dogs or strangers. With proper socialization, your dog will learn how to approach new dogs and people calmly and confidently.

Say Yes to Small Dog Socialization

Socializing your small dog to new environments is one of the most important steps you can take in ensuring their well-being. It helps build their confidence, reduces anxiety, prevents behavioral problems, and encourages healthy interactions with people and other dogs. At Canine Cabana, we’re here to support your dog’s socialization and behavioral training and provide them with a safe, positive environment where they can grow and thrive.

Whether you’re looking for supervised playdates, structured socialization sessions for dogs, or expert guidance on socializing your dog at home, Canine Cabana is your partner in helping your small dog adapt to the world with ease. By starting early with dog training sessions and maintaining a steady pace, you’ll see your dog flourish in new environments, ensuring they are happy, confident, and well-adjusted for the years to come.

Dog daycare has become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason. It offers a range of benefits for both dogs and their owners, making it a valuable option for those who want to provide the best care and enrichment for their furry companions. In this blog post, we’ll explore the numerous advantages of dog daycare and why it’s an excellent choice for dogs of all breeds and sizes.

Socialization: One of the primary benefits of dog daycare is the opportunity for socialization. Dogs are naturally social animals, and regular interaction with humans is essential for their overall well-being. In a daycare setting, dogs have the chance to play, run, and interact with other people and potentially other dogs under the supervision of trained staff. This helps prevent behavioral issues such as aggression or anxiety and teaches dogs how to properly communicate and interact with their peers. All our team members are trained in dog body language and behavior. They are even CPR and First Aid certified!

Exercise and Physical Activity: Regular exercise is crucial for maintaining a dog’s physical health and mental stimulation. Dog daycare provides ample opportunities for dogs to engage in physical activity throughout the day. Whether it’s playing fetch, going for walks, or participating in enriching games, dogs at daycare stay active and burn off excess energy. This can help prevent obesity, improve cardiovascular health, and alleviate boredom or destructive behavior at home. Our Enrichment Daycare Program incorporates engaging playtimes and includes a unique activity each day to provide an enhanced level of hands-on care and mental stimulation such as Brain Games, Music Day, Duck Hunt, and many more!

Mental Stimulation: In addition to physical exercise, dog daycare also provides valuable mental stimulation for dogs. Engaging activities, such as puzzle toys, agility courses, and sensory experiences, keep dogs mentally stimulated and prevent boredom. Mental stimulation is essential for preventing behavioral issues and promoting overall cognitive health in dogs of all ages.

Supervision and Safety: One of the key advantages of dog daycare is the supervision and safety provided by trained staff members. Dogs are constantly monitored to ensure their safety and well-being, preventing accidents or conflicts between dogs. Additionally, daycare facilities are equipped with secure enclosures and safety protocols to minimize risks and create a safe environment for all dogs in attendance.

Alleviates Separation Anxiety: For dogs prone to separation anxiety, daycare can be a lifesaver. Rather than being left alone at home for long periods, dogs at daycare enjoy constant companionship and interaction with both humans and other dogs. This can help alleviate anxiety and stress associated with being separated from their owners and provide them with a sense of security and comfort.

Dog daycare offers a multitude of benefits for dogs, ranging from socialization and exercise to mental stimulation and safety. By enrolling your dog in daycare, you provide them with the opportunity to thrive both physically and mentally while you’re away. Whether you have a busy schedule, a high-energy dog, or simply want to provide the best care possible for your furry friend, dog daycare is a fantastic option worth considering.

Positive reinforcement training is a highly effective and humane approach to teaching your pet new behaviors and strengthening your bond with them. Unlike negative-based methods, which can cause stress and anxiety in pets, positive reinforcement focuses on rewarding desired behaviors, making learning enjoyable for both pet and parent. In this blog post, we’ll explore some valuable tips for implementing positive reinforcement training with your furry companion.

Use High-Value Rewards: When training your pet using positive reinforcement, it’s essential to use rewards that are highly motivating to them. Whether it’s tasty treats, favorite toys, or verbal praise, choose rewards that your pet finds irresistible. Experiment with different rewards to determine what drives your pet the most and use them consistently to reinforce desired behaviors.

Timing is Key: Timing is crucial in positive reinforcement training. It’s essential to reward your pet immediately after they exhibit the desired behavior to reinforce the connection between the action and the reward. Be sure to praise or offer a treat within seconds of your pet performing the behavior you’re trying to encourage. This helps them understand exactly what they did right and increases the likelihood of them repeating the behavior in the future.

Be Clear and Consistent: Consistency is key when it comes to positive reinforcement training. Make sure everyone in the household is on the same page and using the same cues and rewards consistently. This helps prevent confusion for your pet and reinforces the association between the cue, the behavior, and the reward. Use clear and concise commands, and avoid mixing signals or expectations to ensure clarity for your pet.

Start Small and Be Patient: Break down the desired behavior into small, achievable steps and gradually build upon them. Start with simple commands or behaviors and gradually increase the difficulty as your pet becomes more proficient. Be patient and understanding, and don’t expect immediate results. Learning takes time, and every pet progresses at their own pace. Celebrate small victories along the way and remain consistent in your training efforts.

Focus on Positive Reinforcement: In positive reinforcement training, the emphasis is on rewarding desired behaviors rather than punishing unwanted ones. Instead of scolding or reprimanding your pet for mistakes, redirect their focus to the desired behavior and reward them when they get it right. This creates a positive learning environment and strengthens the bond between you and your pet based on trust and mutual respect.

Positive reinforcement training is a powerful tool for pet parents seeking to build a strong, harmonious relationship with their furry companions. By using high-value rewards, timing your reinforcements effectively, maintaining consistency, starting small, and focusing on positive reinforcement, you can effectively teach your pet new behaviors and strengthen your bond in the process. With patience, persistence, and plenty of love, you and your pet can achieve remarkable results together through positive reinforcement training.

Why should I socialize and train my puppy or dog?

Welcoming a new puppy into your life is an exciting adventure, but it comes with its fair share of challenges. At Canine Cabana, Riverview, FL, we understand the importance of early training and socialization for your furry friend. Our comprehensive program, Puppy Social and Cabana Manners, not only ensures a well-behaved pup but also sets the foundation for a happy and healthy life.

Potty Training

One of the primary concerns for puppy owners is often potty training. Our experienced trainers at Canine Cabana take a personalized approach, recognizing that each puppy is unique. Through positive reinforcement techniques and a consistent schedule, we guide your pup towards successful potty habits. Our facilities are designed to create a comfortable and clean environment, making the learning process seamless for both the puppy and the owner.

Leash Walking

Teaching your puppy proper leash manners is crucial for enjoyable walks and a strong bond. In our Puppy Social and Cabana Manners program, we emphasize leash walking as an essential skill. Our trainers use positive reinforcement methods to encourage good behavior, ensuring that your puppy learns to walk beside you with ease. This skill not only enhances your outdoor experience but also promotes a deeper connection between you and your pup.

Environmental Desensitization

Exposing your puppy to various environments early on is key to preventing anxiety and fear later in life. Canine Cabana’s program includes environmental desensitization, where we gradually introduce puppies to different stimuli in a controlled and positive manner. This process helps your pup become well-adjusted and confident in various settings, setting the stage for a well-rounded and adaptable companion.

Our dedicated team at Canine Cabana, in Riverview FL, consists of trained professionals with a deep understanding of dog body language and behavior. This knowledge enables us to identify and address any behavioral issues your puppy may exhibit, ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment. With our expertise, we can tailor our approach to suit your puppy’s unique needs, promoting a positive and effective dog training experience. Play is an integral part of a puppy’s development, and at Canine Cabana, we take it to the next level. Our 3 acres of property provide ample space for quality and fun playtimes. Supervised by our experienced team, these play sessions not only allow your pup to burn off excess energy but also encourage socialization with other dogs, fostering essential social skills.

Investing in your puppy’s early training at Canine Cabana’s Puppy Social and Cabana Manners program is an investment in a lifetime of joy and companionship.

As we embark on the Thanksgiving holiday, we hope you and your furry family members are in good health and high spirits!

We want to take a moment to address the recent news reports of a “mystery” respiratory illness impacting dogs as part of our unwavering commitment to the health and safety of your pets.

This is not a new illness, as it has been seen nationwide over the past year, with an uptick in reported cases since August 2023. Veterinarians have stated that dogs with the illness show symptoms that include coughing, sneezing, nasal and/or eye discharge, and lethargy, which, in some cases, lasts longer than the typical 7-10 days and can lead to pneumonia.

If your pet shows any of these symptoms, please see your veterinarian and keep them away from other pets.

Here at Canine Cabana, we take precautionary measures as part of our standard safety protocols. Some examples include:

While we are not veterinarians, our team is professionally trained and certified in pet safety and constantly monitors each pet’s health. We conduct thorough wellness checks for each dog to ensure we do not accept dogs with any signs of illness, including a runny nose, sneezing, or cough. If we observe any of these symptoms upon check-in, we will not accept the dog. At the same time, we ask that you please keep your dogs home if any of these symptoms are present.

We use the industry’s best practices for thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting accommodations, bedding, bowls, common areas, and play areas multiple times a day.

As an extra measure of precaution, we are avoiding the use of shared water bowls in play areas.

While thankfully rare, if a dog becomes ill while they are with us, we immediately separate them from other dogs and seek immediate medical attention while keeping pet parents informed every step of the way.

Here’s what you can do to keep your pets safe now and throughout the year.

If you have an upcoming reservation with us, please avoid dog parks, another pet care facility, the vet’s office, pet stores, or anywhere your dog may encounter other dogs since we have no way of knowing if those dogs are properly vaccinated or if they may be ill.

While we hope to provide all your pet care needs, we encourage you to select one pet care facility as your pet’s “home-away-from-home” and avoid switching back and forth between two or more facilities since this can put all dogs at risk. Even if your pet doesn’t become ill during this process, they may be exposed to an illness and carry it to another facility.

Stay current on vaccinations and try to ensure your dog is vaccinated one to two weeks before playing with other dogs. This practice helps prevent the spread of anything dogs may have been exposed to at the veterinarian’s office and prevents any chance of viral shedding from the vaccinations received.

Avoid taking your dog out of state, where they may be exposed to viruses not prevalent in your home area. If you must travel with your dog, keep them home for about two weeks before allowing them to interact with other dogs and putting them at risk.

Keep your dog active based on their abilities since, like humans, activity, and engagement helps promote and maintain a lifetime of good health and happiness for your furry family members.

Please contact us with any questions. We look forward to seeing you and your furry loved one very soon and wish you a happy and healthy holiday season.
