Scrappy Sixteen Patch Quilt

Today's quilt finish is brought to you by a I'd love another quilt for Christmas! prompt from my sister at the Thanksgiving dinner table. I come from a family of quilters and with almost 25 years of quilt making myself, I'm never really sure if my family wants more quilts...or feels like they have too many already. Although, is too many quilts really a thing?

This fat quarter bundle I'd stashed away from Morgan Kelly Quilts was the perfect color palette to match my sister's decor. The exact bundle is no longer available, but I love every bundle Morgan puts together!

We celebrated Christmas a few weeks early this year, so that meant only seven days of sewing time from start to finish. A basic, 16" square sixteen patch was the perfect, quick pattern. I really appreciate a pattern with minimal scraps. Twenty-five fat quarters were needed for this 5x5 block layout, measuring 80x80".

The all over quilting pantograph was done on my BERNINA Q24 longer using the design called Slick from Urban Elementz. I love how the quilting gives so much movement to the overall design.

Hand binding will always be my favorite. There's something so therapeutic about the process as you put the final touches on a finished quilt. You can find my fool-proof double fold binding tutorial right here.

Today, I'm sharing a quick & very beginner friendly quilt pattern that you can easily whip up in an afternoon. We love a quick quilting project around here!

I first designed this quilt a few years ago using a linen blend & solid combination, but I think it works really well with all solid cottons, too!

The quilting is a simple, cross hatch of sorts done on a longarm quilting machine. I really appreciate how the design provides texture and interest to this quilt, complementing the simplicity of the design, without being overbearing.

Swell Christmas Lucky Log Cabins Quilt

Today I am excited to share a new Christmas quilt. This project has been a longtime in the works and I’m thrilled to check this one off the #finishit list!

This fabric collection is called Swell Christmas and it’s a really great mix of traditional Christmas colors, holiday prints, all with a vintage flare. I’d been holding on to the collection for several years, just waiting for a great pattern. Then last year, Emily Dennis from Quilty Love released her Lucky Log Cabins quilt pattern and it felt like the perfect scrappy design.

I pieced the quilt top last December, ordered the backing fabric, and then never got around to quilting it. Until this year! Our three year old is REALLY into Christmas & Santa this year and it seemed like the perfect quilt to finish for her bed.

I wanted an all over quilting design that gave the quilt movement and texture, without being busy. I chose to quilt it with three wavy lines grouped tightly together, followed by another three lines spread just a little further apart. I’m really happy with the finished look!

Solid binding felt like a great way to finish this Christmas quilt. Binding is my favorite part of the whole quilting process! You can check out my free binding tutorial here.

This quilt is officially on a bed and providing lots of cozy Christmas vibes in our house!

I Heart You Quilt | #Finishit2019 Number Six

I'm thrilled today to share with you all my sixth quilty finish of 2019 - my I Heart You quilt. As you can tell from the snow in the pictures, it's been completed for a few months just waiting for a blog post. Well, here we are!

When Then Came June & Pen and Paper Patterns announce the #IHeartYouSewAlong, using their I Heart You quilt pattern, I was quickly bitten by the bug. This simple, clean design looks go in so many color palettes plus it was a fun, fast finish. For my version I decided to leap a bit outside the box, and I'm so glad I did!

My version of this quilt features the Robert Kaufman Kona Color of the Year - Splash, black & white woven plaid background, and a bit of contrasting wasabi colored solid, just for fun. This was my first time using of the Robert Kaufman woven plaids and you guys, SO GOOD! Like "I want to use it in all the quilts" good.

Several of you asked how I matched up the woven plaid with each piece. The truth? I didn't even try to match the plaid. YOLO, right? :)

A Bonnie & Camille Color Pop Baby Quilt | #Finishit2019 Number Five

There's no such thing as too many baby quilts, right? I mean, it only makes sense that Harper would have ALL THE QUILTS - she is my daughter after all. Spoiler Alert: this scrappy Bonnie & Camille quilt didn't start out as a baby quilt...it's just where it ended.

I just love Cluck Cluck Sew's patterns - not only is Allison Harris a true gem, but her designs are fun and fresh. So it should come as no surprise that I instantly fell in love with her Color Pop pattern she released in the Fall of 2018. Scrappy. Modern. And most importantly, FAST!

Color Pop uses either yardage, jelly roll strops, or in my case - fabric scraps! I'm always looking for a great scrappy quilt for those fabric scraps that multiply while we sleep. I swear they do...it's the only explanation of why my bins are overflowing. Both the Bonnie & Camille focus fabrics AND the background fabrics came entirely from my fabric stash (otherwise known as a double bonus). I started cutting & cutting and before long I had enough fabric cut for a Queen size quilt, perfect for our bed.

I really thought I had a solid plan - new bed quilt...check, fabric from my stash...check. Fool proof, right? I started chain piecing and the blocks started coming together quickly. First one, a few more, and before long I had all 49 quilt blocks needed for my Queen size quilt. I'm sure you are thinking - but wait, she said this was a baby quilt.

You are correct.

Somewhere after sewing all 49 blocks and actually pressing said blocks, I changed my mind. I'm sure if you chatted with Brandon he'd tell you this happens often. What can I say...I hate pressing. I pressed the 12 blocks I needed for a baby quilt, sewed them up, and stashed away the other blocks for another day.

A Rainbow Picnic Quilt | #Finishit2019 Number Four

Some quilts take longer to finish than others. Life happens and in our case, we move. We move a lot. Brandon's job transfers us around Iowa & Minnesota every year or two - it's mostly fun but results in so many unfinished projects. In boxes. So many boxes.

Maybe it's just me, but I find these unfinished projects weigh me down. I feel guilty not finishing them - some projects I still love and some I just don't love anymore. Maybe it was Marie Kondo on Netflix or the motivation of a New Year, but kicking 2019 off with a #FINISHIT2019 list of ALL (okay, mostly all) my projects has been a GAME CHANGER. Mapping out how close each project is to being done and creating a pretty visual has been such the motivator. I just love putting an "X" in those pretty rainbow boxes.

Three and a half years, three moves, and one wedding. That's exactly how long this Rainbow Picnic Quilt took to complete. Crazy, right?! It's a simple quilt using 10" precut squares in every color of the rainbow and I can't wait to use it this summer. At the park for a picnic or an afternoon at the pool with Harper - it's going to be perfect.

Two Modern Barn Mini Quilts | #Finishit2019 Number Two & Three

Do you ever made the same quilt twice? I'm usually a "one quilt & done quilt" kind of gal - in fact, before one project is complete, I'm already thinking about what's coming up next. That all changed over the Holidays when I was commissioned to make two identical Modern Barn Mini Quilts - finish number two & three for 2019.

Both customers requested their mini quilts to match the original one featured in the Fall 2016 issue of Quilts & More - fabric, straight-line quilting, and all. It was a fun project - especially because I very rarely use my own directions to make a quilt. Generally speaking, my process is design a quilt, make a quilt, then write the directions.

String Heart Block | A Tutorial Adaptation

Cluck Cluck Sew's Heart Block is a quilty classic & perfect for Valentine's Day. This year I chose to add a scrappy string twist to her traditional heart block and I'm loving every bit of it - especially for using up those fabric scraps!

Here's what you need:

- fabric scraps

- background fabric

- foundation paper like this

- Cluck Cluck Sew's FREE Heart Block Printable

- ruler

- pencil

- thread

- rotary cutter

- sewing machine

STEP ONE.

Choose the finished block size you'd like to create - the Cluck Cluck Sew FREE Heart Block Printable offers directions for seven different sizes. I choose a 6" finish block for my string heart blocks.

Cut background fabric according to Cluck Cluck Sew's cutting instructions.

Cut TWO rectangles of the foundation paper in place of the print fabrics as listed on the pattern.

STEP TWO.

Cut your fabric scraps. I'm using 1 1/4" wide scraps for my block.

STEP THREE.

Using the Cluck Cluck Sew FREE Heart Block Printable as a guide, draw a line where the SEW line would be in Step 2 & 3.

Then draw a second line, 1/4" outside of your sew lines - I'm marking mine with Xs.

STEP FOUR.

We now need to create a scrappy string block of sorts between these two outer lines marked with Xs. Start by laying one fabric scrap string, right side up, along the lower X-marked line.

Lay your second fabric scrap string, right sides together, with top edges matching. Sew using a 1/4" seam and press open.

Continue with this process, adding additional fabric scrap strings until you've reached the second outer line marked with Xs.

STEP FIVE.

Trim your block to the desired size.

STEP SIX.

Continue on using the Cluck Cluck Sew FREE Heart Block Printable to finish your blocks.

A Ridgeside Mini | #Finishit2019 Number One

I've listed several (admittedly, not all) of my unfinished projects on my #FINISHIT2019 list & can already tell it's helping me stay motivated. Having everything visually organized is how I work best. Which means I could quickly see my first four projects just needed the binding hand sewn down - yay, quick finishes!

First up, this black & aqua Ridgeside Mini Quilt - my official first finish of 2019. The mini quilt's finished size is 18" x 18" and it's made entirely from leftover fabric scraps - double bonus! Typically, I would have quilted this simple cross-hatch quilting design using my domestic sewing machine and walking foot, but I wanted to try something new on my BERNINA Longarm. It worked & it was fast! Twelve minutes fast. Can you believe it?

The Ridgeside mini quilt finishes at 18" x18" - that means it's not only a fast finish but perfect for scraps. I originally made the cover mini quilt using Cluck Cluck Sew's Hazel collection from Windham Fabrics. Which, I might add, is one of my all time favorite collections. Those prints & that color palette - yes, please.

You may have heard of my crazy idea to make 25 Mini Quilt(tops)s in 25 Days starting December 1st. If not, I'll promise to share all the juicy details in a blog post this weekend. Basically I found myself inspired by the Advent calendars we had growing up (which always seemed to be filled with nasty chocolate) and I decided I was up for a little challenge. Each day a new mini quilt. So far I'm happy to report I've been keeping up. It's been especially enjoyable to sneak a few minutes of sewing time in each day and with a nine month old at home, it's a rare treat! Day One of my countdown to Christmas inspired this navy + sparkle version of the Ridgeside mini quilt - it's a little outside my normal style but I couldn't be happier with the end result. Note to self: keep trying new things.

Perfectly Plaid - A New Pattern

Today I'd like to introduce you to a new pattern we've just added to the Canoe Ridge Creations Pattern Shop called Perfectly Plaid. It's a design I originally created this past Spring while on maternity leave with Harper and have been anxiously awaiting its release to share it with all of you. The instant download PDF pattern includes beginner friendly step-by-step instructions, full color diagrams, two size options, and a coloring page to customize your own quilt.

I wrote the instructions to include a strip piecing method for a quick assembly - hello, quilt in a day! Choose between the Small Throw at 52" x 52" or Large Throw at 70" x 70" and if you are like me, you're going to want to make multiple quilts. My first Perfectly Plaid quilt is the original solid version you'll see on the cover of the pattern. A simple pink duo paired with a crisp white background makes it timeless.

For my second version I went with a black solid & black Robert Kaufman essex linen. Don't tell the first version, but I think this one is my favorite - it screams Farmhouse Vintage decor!

A Fall Sidewalk Chalk Quilt Top

Fall is in the air. The farmers in their tractors running day & night with the harvest. Crunchy leaves, apple orchards, pumpkin patches & soup for dinner. There's just something magical about this time of year. And the best part - it's perfect sewing weather! I've been working on several projects at once and this new Fall quilt for Harper is sure to be a favorite. It's jewel-toned solids are a refreshing change to what I normally use in my quilts - it's fun to change it up.

A Baby Quilt For Harper

Last June we received the news we'd been waiting to hear for almost 2 years - we were finally pregnant! We each have our own story, but like so many others our journey to parenthood didn't come easily. It included months of trying naturally, a false positive/early miscarriage (to this day, we aren't really sure what happened), fertility specialists, testings, and a planned surgery. So we just stopped trying and a month or two later we were expecting - a complete surprise! Naturally I did what any quilter would do and started sewing a baby quilt. In fact, if I remember right, I started sewing before we had even told our parents & family. My plan was simple - stick to gender neutral colors and a clean, scrappy design.

I started pulling gray & aqua scraps and paired it with white & off-white solids - spray starching the fabric as I pressed. Let's be honest, is there really anything better than crisp, freshly starched fabric? For years I've used Mary Ellen's Best Press but just recently started using this kind of spray starch and I absolutely love it - the price point is great, too! From there I started cutting the scraps into different widths keeping the sizes random while still utilizing the most out of each piece.

I started randomly sewing the fabrics together and used my 6x24" quilting ruler to cut the rows into uniform widths. The project went together rather quickly and before I knew it I had enough scrap units for a baby quilt. For the backing fabric I pulled one of my favorite Bonnie & Camille prints - the aqua scallops.

Keeping with the simple, crisp design I opted for a simple Loop design for the longarm quilting. I actually finished quilting this project the week before we had Harper - perfect timing! Normally I prefer a bold binding fabric - like the black & white strip I use so often - but bold wasn't right with this quilt. This low volume, aqua dot came from my stash and was just perfect. Harper turned 8 months on Saturday and it's been so much fun using this quilt as she's grown. This quilt is the first of many she'll have and it's already a part of so many memories.

Something New, Something Old

Moving four times in three years quickly puts into perspective just how much "stuff" you own. Just ask my husband, Brandon - he's touched every moving box at least twice with this most recent move. If not three times. With each move my collection of sewing stuff seems to grow, and grow, and...well you get the point. Usually there's a discussion about how "with this move we're going to get more organized" or "I'm finally going to finish all those UFOs I've started" or (most often) "I really need to start using some of this fabric stash". And as I'm sure you can probably guess, it doesn't actually happen.

Until this time!

No, I mean it - it's already happening which means I'm counting it as a success. Cha-Ching! I'm making it a point for every new project I start (and finish! - that's the key part...no more half finished projects) I follow it up with finishing one of those stashed away projects. Something new, something old.

It started with a new project - a crib size Sidewalk Chalk quilt from Then Came June for Harper. Bonus points, it was 100% stash fabric - yes!

Then I moved on to an already started project - another baby quilt for our little lady (one can never have too many baby quilts, right?) using one of Cluck Cluck Sew's new patterns, Color Pop. This one is made up of Bonnie & Camille scraps & stash and I'm hoping to make myself a matching throw quilt this Fall.

My next new project was a fun project out of Emily Dennis of Quilty Love's new book - more on that later.

Then it was time for another old project - my Stars & Stripes quilt that was started in July of 2016. In the move I'd found the quilt top 99.9% finished and just needed to add the side & top/bottom borders. Brandon quickly claimed this quilt as his own so I hope to have it quilted and ready by his birthday next month.

That brings me back to starting something new this week. I'd like to make a Christmas quilt with some of my stashed Holiday fabric but I can't seem to decide on a design. If you have a suggestion on what pattern I should use leave it in the comments.

Last week I sent this adorable Iowa Star block off for a fun project with Country Living Magazine. I used a blue & green combination of solid fabrics for my 12" block - which made for a fun twist on such a traditional quilt block.
