Here's another good review about the Canon 1D Mark IV's autofocus system.

After testing Canon's newest professional SLR, professional sports photographer Brad Mangin offers praise for the camera's autofocus system that's as lavish as the scorn he heaped upon the model's predecessor.

Mangin tested the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV at a football game, and his overall assessment published on his blog doubtless was music to the ears of designers at the Japanese camera maker: "This camera performed flawlessly...Canon should be able to keep long-time (and heavily invested) users like me happy with the new Mark IV."

Perhaps not so pleasant to hear was his excoriation of the earlier model. "To be brutally honest, I found the Canon EOS-1D Mark III to be a complete disaster. I consider it to be the biggest lemon professional 35mm camera in modern photographic history. I have a considerable investment in Canon cameras and lenses, and was reluctant to jump ship to Nikon," said Mangin, whose customers include Sports Illustrated. "With the Mark IV, it was do or die for Canon."

He shot with Canon's 400mm f2.8 lens, sometimes with a 1.4x teleconverter, in bright sunlight. "Using a Canon Mark III with a 400mm lens and a 1.4x converter in this exact same situation was not an option. The results were embarrassing and upsetting. However, the new Mark IV seemed to like working with the 400mm lens and 1.4x combination and delivered some very nice, tack-sharp images," Mangin said.

His assessment of the 1D Mark III jibes with that of Rob Galbraith, a photographer who extensively chronicled his gripes with the SLR's autofocus system in 2007. Mangin said two others photographing the game using the earlier EOS-1D Mark IIN were relieved that the Mark IV performed well.

Another photographer to get an early model of the 1D Mark IV to test is Jens Dresling, a Danish photojournalist. He also praised the autofocus, judging by a translation of his views that indicates the camera focused well both with wide-angle and telephoto lenses.

The $5,000 EOS-1D Mark IV is Canon's first full-on professional SLR that can shoot video, but it also shoots 10 still frames per second for conventional photography. The 16.1-megapixel sensor can shoot up to ISO 12,800 at a regular setting and up to 102,400 in its extended range setting.

Its sensor is an unusual intermediate "APS-H" size that measures 27.9 by 18.6mm. That's about halfway between the full-frame sensors of most high-end SLRs and the APS-C sensors on Canon's mainstream SLRs. Larger sensors are more expensive but enable better low-light performance and a wider dynamic range.

Here's some feedback about the Canon 1D Mark IV's AF function. Canon has been haunted by the Canon 1D Mark III autofocus fiasco and this news about the Canon 1D Mark IV superb autofocus has brought them back in the competition.

In a blog entry today, top-notch U.S. sports photographer Brad Mangin has written an enthusiastic assessment of the EOS-1D Mark IV's AF system, based on his use of a preproduction body at an NFL football game this past weekend.

Mangin, who refers to the EOS-1D Mark III and its AF system as "a complete disaster," says the EOS-1D Mark IV, by comparison, "performed flawlessly" as it captured many more properly focused frames than its predecessor.

The post includes a link to a RAW CR2 taken with the camera, which can be processed in Canon's Digital Photo Professional 3.7.3 or other software that supports EOS-1D Mark IV RAW files. Note that the CR2 may not download properly in some browsers if left-clicked; to workaround that, right-click on the photo containing the link and choose your browser's save-linked-file-to-disk option.

The EOS-1D Mark IV, Canon's 16.06 million image pixel, 10fps replacement for the troubled EOS-1D Mark III, has been released for sale in the U.S. and Canada. We've received the first reports of photographers taking delivery of the camera in the U.S. starting on December 31, while we've confirmed that Canon Canada commenced shipments starting on December 30 (shipping times and today's holiday mean that most Canadian dealers outside the Toronto area won't receive their initial allotment of bodies before early next week).

Availability of the EOS-1D Mark IV in the U.S. and Canada follows its release in various European and Asian countries starting roughly December 22-23, based on reader feedback.

We don't have an EOS-1D Mark IV yet, nor do we have a firm date for getting one. Nevertheless, the plan is still to test and write about the camera's AF system, a process that will take a minimum of a few weeks from the time an EOS-1D Mark IV arrives.

The quality of the shots are very impressive! Do take note of Engadgets update that the high ISO pic on the right was shot at 102400, not 65535.

Wondering how Canon's high-ISO response to Nikon performs in the dark? We've got the answer. Photographer John Deeb got his early and was not only kind enough to take a comprehensive set of unboxing pictures with a video, but also captured a series of pictures of model Lauren Howery to show off how the thing performs in extremely low light at increasingly excessive ISO settings. Lots and lots of pictures below.

John took a series of photos going from ISO 1600 all the way up to a mind-blowing ISO 65535 102400 and the results are plain to see. 1600 is quite impressive. Even up to 6400 the photos are quite smooth and even 12800 isn't bad, but after that things quickly go downhill -- suitable for capturing a shot of the sasquatch hiding in the shadows, but not something you'd want to resort to for your next studio shoot by any means. This seems to fairly closely match the performance we've seen in the Nikon D3S we've been testing of late, meaning yet again it's probably time for photogs to show their colors and fall along party lines.

Update: Apparently the app we used to generate the ISO overlays read the EXIF information incorrectly for the highest-ISO picture, as it is actually shot at 102400, not 65535 as we'd indicated. All the more impressive, then.

While that price may seem steep to the layman, pro photographers will likely find this a drop in the bucket when considering the standard price for camera accessories like lenses, flashes and lights.

CES: Canon SLRs get new wireless transmitters - by CNET

Canon has just released latest wireless transmitters for their DSLR lineup.

These wireless transmitters are great for photographers who needs to send out their photos out immediately. They can have a netbook on standby in their car or with their assistants.

Canon on Thursday announced three new wireless photo transfer accessories for its higher-end digital SLR models, adding the ability to simultaneously shoot with 10 linked cameras and other new features.

The wireless file transmitter devices, which mount to the SLR camera bodies, are the WFT-E2 II A, available this quarter for the EOS-1D Mark IV; the WFT-E4 II A, available now for the EOS 5D Mark II; and the WFT-E5A, available now for the EOS 7D. Each transmitter costs $700--more than an entire lower-end SLR and lens--but provides a variety of options to connect devices to the cameras and to link them to the outside world over a network.

One new feature is called Camera Linking, which lets up to 10 cameras take the same shot, which can be useful for capturing the same moment from different perspectives. Seen advertisements where it looks like the camera is whirling around a person frozen in a midair leap? That's the idea here.

Earlier WFT models let photographers plug in portable hard drives for more storage space or GPS devices to geotag photos with geographic location coordinates. The new transmitters also can be used with Canon's BU-30 Bluetooth unit, a small USB device, which lets Bluetooth-enabled GPS devices connect as well.

Also new with the transmitters is the ability to connect to networks with 802.11a, a Wi-Fi standard sometimes found in corporate environments. Earlier models supported only the 802.11b and 802.11g standards, but Canon thinks the 802.11a support will be useful in electronically noisy areas such as sports arenas. And the new models can use the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) standard that's designed to ease the process of connecting to wireless networks.

One new feature available only on the WFT-E5A for the EOS 7D is support for the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) technology that can be used to display photos on compatible TVs or photo frames, Canon said.

Like their predecessors, the wireless devices have built-in servers that permit photographers, photo editors, or others to retrieve photos wirelessly from the camera using a Web browser or the venerable FTP file-transfer service. The devices also permit people with laptops, iPod Touches, Netbooks, or various other devices to remotely take photos using the camera's live view mode.

A direct replacement for the company's previous 1D Mark III model, the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV uses a new CMOS image sensor and dual DIGIC 4 image processors, which together have allowed Canon to offer both an increase in image resolution to 16.1 megapixels, along with a huge step forwards in the camera's ISO sensitivity range which now reaches as high as an expanded ISO 102,400 setting. Adopted from the previous EOS 7D model, there's also a new higher-resolution LCD display with improved reflection / glare resistance in the 1D Mark IV.

The Canon EOS-1D Mk IV also has a significantly uprated autofocus system, and high definition video capability at resolutions up to 1,920 x 1,080 pixels with a jack allowing optional use of an external stereo mic. The 1D Mk IV also supports UDMA Mode 6 CompactFlash cards, adds Canon's Peripheral Illumination Correction technology, debuts a new generation of Canon's Auto Lighting Optimizer function, and quite a bit more besides

Professional take - Canon’s high-end precision EOS 7D and EOS 1D Mark IV cameras are both engineered for excellence

CANON Marketing (Malaysia) recently launched the EOS 7D and EOS 1D Mark IV cameras aimed at bridging the gap between skilled amateurs and professional photographers. Its president and CEO Liew Sip Chon said these new flagship models are the crème of the crop.

Liew added that the cameras will be the perfect device for those looking for higher speed and performance and that professional photographers will find them appealing.

A class higher than Canon’s popular 50D, the EOS 7D offers the highest quality images in its class, thanks to Canon’s 18-megapixel CMOS sensor (APS-C size) with user-selectable sensitivity range from ISO 100 to 6400 (expandable to ISO 12,800).

The EOS 7D offers a high continuous shooting rate of 8fps to capture fast-moving action sequences at a maximum burst of about 94 shots for large/fine jpeg images, and 15 shots in RAW. It features a new high-precision 19-point all cross-type AF system (including a centre f/2.8dual cross focus).

Best of all, the EOS 7D offers an astonishing level of control and customisation. For instance, the EOS 7D can intelligently choose a subject and track it in AI Servo mode; select spot AF to achieve focus from a precise point; or designate any of five AF focus zones to achieve the desired focus.

Live view shooting is also possible via the camera’s three-inch Clear View II LCD screen enhanced with 920k pixels (VGA). For ease of operation, it comes with dedicated buttons for one-touch access to Live View/Movie shooting mood and RAW/JPEG mode that simultaneously records images in both formats.

Images from the camera can be also be transferred to and viewed on DLNA-compatible appliances like certain TV sets, digital photo frames, sony Playstation and Microsoft Xbox 360.

The Canon EOS 7D retails from RM6,488 for the body to RM9,388 with EFs15-85mm IS lens while the lenses are priced from RM2,000 to RM3,888.

Meanwhile, the EOS-1D Mark IV is ready to set a new standard with enhancements in every facet of the EOS experience. This latest in digital SLR camera technology is engineered for professionals who demand top-of-the-line performance.

The newly-developed 16.1-megapixel CMOS sensor (APS-H size) delivers unparallelled image quality, with superb detail and natural colour reproduction.

The EOS-1D Mark IV houses a brand-new and faster twin-engine in the Dual Digic 4 processors. The twin processors flawlessly handle the enormous amount of digital information required when working at high shooting speeds, up to 10fps with bursts of 85 consecutive images (in jpeg large).

The EOS-1D Mark IV supports the UDMA mode 6 which allows for faster data transfers. Complimentary to this power is the widest ISO normal range in the EOS line, from 100 to 12,800, with extensions down to ISO 50 and up to an amazing 102,400.

It also comes with a new high-precision 45-point AF sensor that has been developed for improved reliability, including 39 cross-type AF points that are executable even with an f/4 maximum aperture (with an array of lenses).

More customisable AF functions have been added for greater control and customisation of auto focus points.

The EOS-1D’s new LCD monitor is a major new development, with higher resolution, better colour reproduction and drastically reduced light reflectance for improved visibility, even under a bright sun.

With a 3.0-inch Clear View II LCD monitor with 920,000 dots, the EOS-1D Mark IV is highly adaptable to any shooting situation.

A new set of video options have been added to it bringing extreme versatility to this one-of-a-kind DSLR. Full high definition video at a resolution of 1920x1080 can be captured at 24, 25 and 30 progressive frame rates.

The Canon EOS-1D Mark IV will only be available in Malaysia end of the month or early December with the price to be announced later.

PROFESSIONAL photographers will be pleased to know that Canon has just announced its eagerly anticipated high-end range of EOS DSLR cameras — the EOS-1D Mark IV and EOS-7D. - source

Sitting at the very top of Canon’s DSLR camera line, the EOS-1D Mark IV boasts a 16.1-megapixel CMOS sensor (APS-H size) with a 1.3x crop factor. The camera is capable of shooting at high speeds up to 10fps and boasts a new 45-point Auto Focus sensor.

The EOS-1D Mark IV has a wide ISO range from 100 -12,800 to allow photographers to capture highly usable pictures even at high ISO levels, Canon said.

Aimed at bridging the gap between skilled amateurs and professional photographers, the EOS 7D has an 18-megapixel CMOS sensor (APS-C size) with a 1.6x crop factor. The camera offers a high continuous shooting rate of 8fps for capturing fast moving subjects and features a 19-point Auto Focus sensor.

In terms of ISO performance, the EOS-7D has a selectable range of ISO 100 to ISO 6400.

The two cameras come with an array of improved features that include a pair of Digic 4 imaging processors to handle large amounts of data created from high speed continuous capture.

Both cameras feature large 3in LCD monitors that are enhanced with 920,000-pixel resolution for sharper and clearer images, Canon said.

Adding to the list of features, both cameras can also be used to record videos at full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080-pixels) as well as in HD Ready (1,280 x 720-pixels) and standard definition in .MOV format.

Videos can be recorded at a range of frames — the 1D Mark IV and 7D are capable of full HD recordings at 30fps. In addition, the 1D Mark IV can shoot at 60fps in 1280 x 720-pixel resolution.

Canon said that the two cameras would be compatible with the optional WFT-E5 WiFi transmitter accessory. The accessory allows users to remotely shoot pictures on the camera as well as transfer images over WiFi.

Prices for the EOS-7D start at RM6,488 for the body alone. No prices were announced for the EOS-1D Mark IV but Canon said it is expected to hit the stores in late November.

Time for the Nikon D300s to step aside. Because the new Canon EOS 1D Mark IV has just been given the official nod. Aimed at the very best snappers in the business, it comes loaded with the exactly the kind of top end features you’d expect, including a dual Digic 4 processor, 16 megapixels and a sharp new 45-point auto focus system.

There’s no doubting that the Canon EOS 1D Mark IV is not for DSLR noobs. But if you’re looking to step up your game, then this might just be the top notch snapper you’re after. As well as those 16MP and dual Digic 4 processors for serving up super speedy shots, there’s also 10 frames per second continuous shooting and ISO up to an astonishing 12,800.

After working with the Canon EOS-1D MK3 for the past year, I found myself in love with the camera’s build, it’s rugged and very ergonomically designed, but not so enamored with some of it’s technical short comings; its LCD monitor always felt dull and difficult to look at and even after firmware updates I always had trouble with the auto-focus.

Yesterday’s announcement of the new Canon EOS 1D MK4, the MK3’s replacement, got me excited about the updates to those features, and although the 1080p video option is impressive, I still want my DSLR to be the most badass still camera it can be. The new LCD screen has an anti-reflective service and a 920,000 dot resolution, up from the MK3’s 230,000, and, according to Canon, an updated focusing algorithm. Those feature updates would essentially make this drive like the 5D Mark II, my weapon of choice recently. Though oddly, unlike the 5D, the 1D continues to lack a full frame sensor so I’m guessing I’d still reach for the 5D to get the most out of my prime lenses.

While the quality of the 1D Mark IV’s new top ISO (102,400) is still to be determined, it’s an impressive boost to sensitivity. On top of all the new additions, the 1D build quality makes for a very pleasant shooting experience over cheaper cameras and I’m excited to get this thing dirty and test out it’s durability. The videos are out, and now so's the camera: $5000 buys you a 16MP DSLR that shoots at a whopping 102,400ISO with a new 45-point autofocus system, 10fps bursts, and oh yeah—suck it D3s, incredible 1080p video.

The 1D Mark IV uses an APS-H-sized 16-megapixel sensor that's "similar in size to a Super 35mm motion picture film frame" with a 1.3x crop factor (so not full-frame, booo) , and a normal ISO range of 100 to 12,800, with expanded going up to 102,400 ISO (like Nikon's fresh D3s). The new 45-point autofocus system has 39 cross-type points and uses a new AI Servo II AF predictive focusing algorithm that's supposed to be faster, which is handy, since it shoots in 10fps bursts.

But, let's talk about video, which Canon isn't too shy of making the star of this camera: You get full manual exposure control, stereo mic input, and 1080p video at 24, 25 or 30fps; 720p and standard def at 50 or 60fps; and the samples, while obviously Canon-vetted, so far look seriously amazing (that's a link to a full-res1080p stream of the video above, by Vincent Laforet).

There's a new auto-lighting optimizer that automatically adjusts contrast and brightness in-camera that sounds sorta like Nikon's Active D-Lighting. And hurray, a new white balance algorithm that's better at low color temperatures, something that Nikon's typically been better with in the past.

It's coming out in December for $5000. Man, pro DSLRs just got way more interesting again. Six-digit ISO speeds, extreme low-light performance , high-def video: It's a war. -source with more images
