Using distributed ledgers as a payment system

Phil Kenworthy gives serious consideration of the “opportunities that “Distributed Ledgers could create; not in the crypto-currency world but in the existing world of “real” payments.” The former director of the UK’s High Value Payment System and founder and director at Payment Systems Consultancy Ltd. notes that real payment systems “mirror closely the underlying aspirational attributes of a distributed ledger system” and suggests that “it would be a pity” if these systems were not given serious consideration in the future of payment. Distributed Ledgers Part I: Bitcoin is dead

Pascal Bouvier, general partner at Route 66 Ventures, provides in a LinkedIn post a long list of the problems with blockchain technology in Distributed Ledgers Part I: Bitcoin is dead, along with a long list of potential uses that might make sense. “We have yet to see any meaningful adoption in the retail world, and the institutional world seems quite lukewarm,” he writes with a thoughtful “neutral/negative stance.”

From Paper to Electronic: What’s Really Broken in B2B

The Association for Financial Professionals takes a look at the seemingly endless trudge from paper to electronic B2B payments, an area that most desperately need help. FinTech directions lead to consumer destinations first, and this piece gives some of the reasons why. Yet the elimination of paper in financial services is moving forward, as the International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA) last week published v5.8 of its Financial Products Markup Language guidelines, which drive automated securities processing.

Becoming Digital

A trio of articles takes on the frustrations and opportunities of digital transition in finance. With new apps setting the standard for a seamless, fast, integrated service and response model, customers are said to have increasingly less patience with the slow, siloed, outdated communication of banks and larger financial firms in general. McKinsey gives a high-level look in “Going Digital.”

Chris Skinner, writing here for BAI Banking Strategies, takes aim at the difficulties of digital transformation in banking, suggesting many banks may just start from scratch and start new digital banking organizations. “They’re thinking about digital as a channel. . . It’s not a channel or a function.” It’s the core of a new bank.

What out Fintech, the Banks are Coming!

In his own blog, Skinner provides an entertain overview (with links) of a recent New York debate, “This House Believes Fintech Will Eat The Bankers Lunch.” The rebellious FinTech startups did not come out on top in the end. As Skinner writes, “The Start-ups may win the battle but there won’t be a war. Just a symbiotic special relationship.”

A Cynic’s Guide to FinTech

No, this is not from this week, but it came to mind as an excellent—if biting—argument against the FinTech hype from Dan Davies, senior research advisor at Frontline Analysts. Here, he reviews what’s overlooked in seven FinTech business models.

Dodd-Frank Turns 5 as the Volcker Rule Goes in Effect

The rebel startups do tend to overlook the force of regulation in financial services. The industry was reminded of that part of the digital journey as the Dodd-Frank Act turned five. See The Wall Street Journal’s article on the impact of landmark regulation, its difficult road to rulemaking, and what’s left to be done. Dodd-Frank also reached a major milestone this week, with implementation of the Volcker Rule, 165 word limiting proprietary trading by banks that ran into reams of rules and counter-rules, “an 891-page preamble leading to a 71-page rule,” as The Economist reports in “Much Ado About Trading.”

So much for preserving the woods.

Cash is not dying without a fight. This week’s news contained a wide range of topics on the trials and tribulations of the shift from cash to digital. What are the immediate battles that digital still has to face, what can it offer to the internationally “underbanked,” and what tools can we use to better think about the exchange between the two?

Cash Is Dying in the Developing World (Isn’t It?)

The rise of mobile payments has had perhaps the biggest effect on the developing world. Not only does it provide safer transactions, it actually provides the data these countries need to better understand (and grow) their economies. And, just to balance it out, here is a defense of the resilience of cash.

In recent weeks, Institutional Investor has stepped up its coverage of cryptofinance regulation. “BitLisence” weighs the obvious benefit that regulation — and its accompanying legitimation — would have with the potential for cramping innovation before the new currencies have had a chance to mature. Amex Launches Fast Digital Checkouts, but Don’t Call It a Digital Wallet

The shopping cart dilemma (we’ll call that the web’s version of cash) and the frequency with which consumers abandon purchases before payment is not new to online retailers. The new “buy buttons” are the thing here. Now Amex puts in its bid where members can buy without creating an account. USA Today looks at the rest of the features that the “anti-wallet” offers.

As the financial landscape shifts and becomes increasingly complex, Gareth Lodge at Celent Banking expands on thoughts by Dave Birch over at Consult Hyperion to work out the need for “need more/better/different nomenclature” to better rethink the digital transformation of banking. They speak to the powerful impact of accurately identifying and naming changes in order to navigate them more easily.

Outages at NYSE, United Airlines, WSJ.com expose digital vulnerabilities

The outages came one after another: one of the nation’s biggest airlines, its largest financial news publication and its main stock exchange.

NYSE shutdown caused by engineers loading wrong software to system

The Guardian followed up the NYSE outage with a story on the critical need for systems to back up the all-too-common failings of under-pressure software engineers. The publication’s lead: “New York Stock Exchange admits three-and-a-half-hour suspension of trading was related to a new software update and was not the result of cyber-attack.”

Y2K.00001: Markets Take a Leap Second Into the Void

In other technology news, Institutional Investor covered the implications of leap-second, which occurred June 30, in a fascinating short on the history of market disruptions influences by time. “We can now sit, look back and save some take-aways for the next edition of the event,” as A sysadmin’s logbook reports.

Warning to Banking Industry: Innovate or Die

The Financial Brand continues its excellent coverage of innovation in banking, delivering this advice up front: “To this end, banking innovation needs to focus on creating a customer-centric business model and an infrastructure that is seamless to the customer.” Last month, the publication took a “Peek Inside 7 of the Banking World’s Coolest Innovation Labs,” where you can see startup culture meeting banking.

Citibank Is Working On Its Own Digital Currency, Citicoin

Yes, it was inevitable, as TechCrunch reports, quoting Kenneth Moore, head of Citigroup Innovations Lab: “We have up and running three separate systems within Citi now that actually deploy blockchain distributed ledger technologies.” For a recent detailed look at the technologies, see “The Future of the Web Looks a Lot Like Bitcoin,” from the IEEE Spectrum.

In this monthly email newsletter targeted to architects and interior designers, we present a case study or focus on an issue that highlights the benefits of terrazzo flooring as we present the work of terrazzo contractors.

“Artistry of Terrazzo” marketing ebook (North Central Terrazzo Association). We write, design, and produce an ongoing series of interactive PDFs to showcase the floor design and craftsmanship of the association’s contractor members.

“Designing Better Workplaces” research report (American Society of Interior Designers). To present research on the business opportunity available to ASID members in working with commercial clients, we took a magazine-like approach to capture the interest of a visually oriented audience.
