There are two Aldi entities, and before we can get into the details of how one of those Aldi companies took over Trader Joe’s, it’s important to understand a little bit about the history of the Albrecht family.

You see, the Albrecht matriarch opened the family’s first grocery store in the early 1900s in the city of Essen, but after two World Wars, Germany was not in great shape. The Albrecht brothers Theo und Karl, who returned from war, took control of the business.

They saw that the situation was dire and the brothers decided to create their own niche by selling pantry products at very low prices. After the company’s growth, multiple shops were opened across Germany.

They lived together until the 1960s. Then, the brothers could no longer agree on selling cigarettes. Theo was in favor, but Karl didn’t like the idea, believing it would attract shoplifters .

They split and Theo took control of Aldi Nord, while Karl took over Aldi Sud.

What’s the Difference Between Trader Joe and Trader Joe?

Theo Albrecht bought Trader Joe’s in California as a way to make a sound investment.

Trader Joe’s was founded by Joe Coulombe, a Stanford University grad who got his start in drugstores and convenience stores. Coulombe bought the six Pronto Markets where he worked as a manager.

In the mid 1950s. In the intervening years, Coulombe had changed up his business model, making his stores stand out amidst the plague of 7-Elevens with unique and eclectic finds.

Then in the late 1960s, the chain was renamed Trader Joe’s, a nod to a popular tiki restaurant in the Los Angeles area (“Trader Vic’s”). Aldi Nord responded quickly.

This is easy to understand. Coulombe’s business model goes beyond finding random items and mixing them up.

He curated expensive goods from discontinued items or overstocks, so he could save money and pass it on to the customer. This sounds familiar?

Whether or not that type of product (high-end/gourmet foods at low prices) made the Aldi Nord purchase of Trader Joe’s intentional, today it’s one of the biggest draws for both Aldi Sud and Trader Joe’s stores, and part of the reason middle-to-upper-class shoppers flock to both.

Is it the Same Thing that Aldi And Trader Joe sell?

Although there are some who claim Aldi US sources its store-brand products from one of the same wholesalers as Trader Joe’s, no direct evidence has been found. However the two stores sell some identical items and it is possible that Aldi could have copied.

The most famous example is Trader Joe’s cult favourite Everything But the Bagel Seasoning. They launched it in 2017. Aldi’s own version was released two years later under their Stonemill seasonings labels, and simply called Everything Bagel.

Other similar products are available, however, such as cheap wine (Trader Joe’s has Two-Buck Chuck brand, and Aldi sells their Winking Owl brand at $2.50/bottle), expensive cheeses, fancy-looking breads, almond butter, and naan bread.

Aldi’s stocks are limited both by size and by design. Trader Joe’s Stores carries a wider range of identical items. Imagine granola, fruit pickles, and spreads that are more gourmet.

Although Trader Joes has a lighter selection of pantry staples than Aldi, a quick glance at the “For the Pantry” page on Trader Joes’ website reveals some basic information. Their 5-lb bag of all-purpose flour sells for $3.99, while the same item sells for $1.15 at Aldi.

They do have some similarities in their product offerings. However, they compete for your disposable income and both make it their business to sell at very low prices.

It could also be said that Trader Joe’s or Aldi occupy very distinct niches while occasionally crossing over to each other’s lane.

What is Trader Joe’s better than Aldi?

Aldi’s stocks are made up of 90 percent Store Label goods, while Trader Joe’s is home to 80 percent. That leaves a lot of people wondering how the two match up in terms of quality.

Aldi emerges as the winner almost in every area. Why? Trader Joe’s is known for producing poor quality produce.

TJ’s produce is often poor in quality. A journalist at thekitchn.com wrote an article about this. It focused on the fact that fresh vegetables are overpackaged and bulk-baked (potentially leading towards waste at home).
