Before jumping into all the juicy info on this weekends massive blockbuster, let’s talk about last weekends Box Office. As expected Spy premiered on top with $29 Million with San Andreas hot on their heels with $25 Million. Insidious Chapter 3 locked up another impressive opening for the franchise considering how small their budget was. While the last of the new movies, Entourage, under performed at $10 Million. All in all it was a slow summer weekend, which will for sure be remedied come Friday with the opening of Jurassic World.

The 4th movie in the always eventful Dino series, is being touted as bigger, & better as most sequels are. And after seeing the trailers its hard to not believe the hype. The reviews coming in are up & down with the Rotten Tomatoes score holding at a Fresh rating of 68%. One of the reviews says its “Fun, thrilling & appropriately horrific in the right places, Jurassic World is a ginormous addition to the monster movie cannon.” Another let’s you know it’s not the best but it sure is fun, “While the new Jurassic World pales next to the awe-inspiring spectacle of the original, it’s easily the franchise’s most thrilling sequel yet.”

The newest movie is set many years after the last flick, but that’s not keeping the film from forgetting about the past. A couple smaller characters will be making their return along with one big Dino from the original. Here’s what the director had to say about the returning star.“The T. Rex that’s in [‘Jurassic World’] is the T. Rex from the original ‘Jurassic Park.’ She is 22 years older. But she’s not limping around. We took the original design and, obviously, technology has changed. So, it’s going to move a little bit differently, but it’ll move differently because it’s older. And we’re giving her some scars and we’re tightening her skin. So, she has that feeling of, like, an older Burt Lancaster. And this movie is her ‘Unforgiven.’

With an emerging A-lister in Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) & a 14 year gap between the last Jurassic Park film, we are estimating that Jurassic World will top $125 million dollars this weekend, tune in next week to see if we are correct.

Last weekends Box Office was a slight surprise as Dwayne Johnson’s disaster flick San Andreas beat out most projections, opening 1st at $54 million. Most had it opening in the $40 million range, meanwhile the only other competitor, Aloha, opened in 6th with $9 million. The rest of the box office was very tight, Pitch Perfect came in 2nd with $14.8, Tomorrowland at $14.3 was 3rd, Mad Max had $14.2, & The Avengers rounded out the top 5 with $11 million. This weekend most are putting the new action comedy Spy in first with San Andreas holding 2nd. Time will well if the other new movies Insidious: Chapter 3, & Entourage can find a footing.

Spy

This raunchy comedy from the creators of Bridesmaids, & The Heat, has the best chance of opening big the weekend. The reviews have been overwhelmingly positive as the movies currently has a 94% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. We shall see if it can withstand opening with 2 other brand name movies, & if San Andreas takes a deep cut into its action audience.

Despite having solid field training, CIA analyst Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) has spent her entire career as a desk jockey, working hand-in-hand with dashing agent Bradley Fine (Jude Law). Using high-tech equipment and a hidden earpiece, Susan is the guardian angel who helps Bradley avoid danger. However, when Bradley is assassinated by Bulgarian arms dealer Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne), Susan wrangles her way into her first undercover assignment to help capture Boyanov and avenge Bradley.

Insidious: Chapter 3

This is the 2nd Horror film of the summer season coming after Poltergeist’s decent opening of $22 million. Insidious was filmed on a very low budget so a 22 million dollar showing would continue the series. The first 2 movies in the series were each made for under $5 million & grossed over $100 million a piece.

Chapter 3 is a prequel set before the haunting of the Lambert family that reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help Quinn Brenner, a teenage girl who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity. She comes to a new house and starts having visions which she thinks are about her dead mother but instead they are spirits which are trying to enter her body just like they do in the first and second chapter of the series.

Entourage

This HBO series about a movie star & his group of friends is loosley based on Mark Wahlberg’s life. The movie is filled with celebrity cameos, movie stars (Liam Neeson), musicians (Pharrell Williams), & athletes (Rhonda Rousey). The film looks to be a reward for all the loyal fans that watched all the way through the show. It was made for $30 millon dollars & has a good chance at making back its money during the next few weeks. Though reviews have been middling to harsh.

Entourage picks up where the series left off, chronicling the continuing career of movie star Vincent Chase & his entourage of friends. New studio head Ari Gold bankrolls Vince’s directorial debut with a $100 million budget, but when it goes $15 million over, Ari must secure financing from Texas billionaire Larsen McCredle and his son Travis. Vince continues his carefree lifestyle saying if the film fails they can just move back to Queens.

HBO’s Game Of Thrones has a very deep mythology in which it has accumulated from over 5000 pages in the A Song of Ice & Fire book series created by George R.R. Martin. Today we discuss the forbidden areas that seem to only bring pain & death to anyone who ventures into them. North of the Wall & Valyria are shown in the map below. The white area is North of the Wall AKA The Land of Always Winter, while Valyria is the paw print looking islands in the middle bottom of the map. One is of ice & one is of fire, which will make these 2 of the most important areas for the series moving forward.

The Land of Always Winter/North of the Wall

Throughout the HBO series we’ve always known about the White Walkers, even from the very first scenes of the show. They have seemingly been on the sidelines slowly adding to their army with small battles here & there on the outskirts of our view. Season 5’s Ep. 8 “Hardhome” changed all of that in a hurry. We now know the greatest threat to the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros is coming fast & they don’t fight fair.

The White Walkers have been described by George R.R. Martin as “strange, beautiful,” “inhuman, elegant,” and “dangerous.”  They are a mysterious race of beings from the land of always winter far north of the wall. They are able to bring the dead back to life as Wights to fight for them, this includes animals. Their king is only known as the Nights King so far.

According to myth’s the White Walker’s first tried to over take Westeros 8,000 years pryor. They appeared as a great darkness overtook the land during a winter that would last a generation. The first men & the children of the forest joined forces to push them back but were unable & had to flee southward. When almost all hope was lost they realized that Dragonglass could kill a White Walker. The tides of war turned & the first men were able to fend off the invasion & push the White Walkers North. The great wall was then built by Bran the Builder, a descendant of the Starks, to keep the White Walkers from ever overtaking the southern lands again. Which is also when the Night’s Watch was formed to help defend against another invasion. The White Walkers slowly became a thing of legend, only told to frighten children.

There was only one other myth that involved the White Walkers. According to this story the 13th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch was said to have fallen in love with a women “as cold as ice”, with “skin as white as the moon & eyes like blue stars”. Most assumed this woman was a White Walker. The story says that the two married, & soon after, the Lord Commander declared himself King. He took the Nightfort, a castle along the wall as his own. He & his queen committed human sacrifices in the name of the White Walkers during the 13 years he “ruled”. The two were killed when the King in the North and the King-Beyond-the-Wall joined forces to attack the Nightfort. In the aftermath, all records of the “Night’s King” were destroyed, and his name was forbidden to be spoken again.

That was the last of the White Walkers for thousands of years until their reemergence, which we have witnessed on the show. During the Season 4 Episode Oathkeeper we witness one of Craster’s sacrificial boys taken by whom we assume is the Night’s King, he then touches the child to create another White Walker.

The Night’s King then returned with all his forces as he staked his claim on Hardhome. Here we watched the current Lord Commander Jon Snow destroy a White Walker with his Valyrian Steel sword. It was then we first realized with Jon that Dragonglass was not the only thing that could destroy a Walker. As the Night’s Watch & Wildling’s floated to the safety of their boats the Night’s King reawoke all of their fallen comrades now in service of the White Walker.

Valyria/The Doom

One of the least discussed lands on the show is shrouded in mystery, it has only been visited once but it sure left an impression. During Season 5 Ep. 5 “Kill The Boy” Jorah Mormont led his captive Tyrion Lannister into Valyria where we witnessed a living Dragon flying above & a fight with the Stone Men which left Jorah infected. This only wet our appetites for the mystery surrounding the homeland of the Targaryens. Here is the rest of what we know from the books & tv show.

 Down in Essos, the continent to the east of Westeros, lies a mysterious land named Valyria. At one time the Valyrians were the most sophisticated civilization in the world. Legend has it they discovered dragons in a volcano & managed to train the beasts. Backed by the dragons’ immense power, the Valyrians became the greatest empire.

Over the years, the Valyrian’s expanded to the Free Cities of Essos & one low class family even made it to Westeros. This family was the Targaryens, whom established their home on Dragonstone, where Stannis Baratheon now resides. Not long after a cataclysmic event known as the Doom struck Valyria, killing most of the Valyrians & their Dragons. The Targaryens were the sole survivors, & with the help of their three dragons they conquered Westeros.

The Doom is an event wrapped in mystery and hearsay, and because no one who was actually there survived the cataclysm, it is hard to know for sure what is fact and what is legend. What we do know is that the Doom changed the world of Game of Thrones forever, and set the stage for everything we’ve seen on the show so far. It reshaped the country breaking the land surrounding the capital city of Valyria into several islands. It only took one night to collapse the entire Valaryian Empire. Storms, tidal waves, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, & unnatural fires ravaged the land seemingly out of nowhere.

To this day, the lands and waters surrounding the region boil and smoke, and are said to be inhabited by demons. The region is considered to be so cursed that no ship will sail to post-Doom Valyria, & just glimpsing its fiery mountains purportedly meant certain death.

Now from what we witnessed on Jorah & Tyrion’s attempt to pass throught Valyria, it seems that dragons are indeed still roaming the country. With stone men attacking anyone who nears. Imagine if either decided to venture away from home what damage they could cause.

Inside Out – June 19th 2015

Inside Out follows Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) a happy, hockey-loving 11-year-old Midwestern girl, as her world turns upside-down when she & her parents move to San Francisco. Riley’s emotions, led by Joy (Amy Poehler) try to guide her through this difficult, life-changing event. However, the stress of the move brings Sadness (Phyllis Smith) to the forefront. When Joy and Sadness are inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley’s mind, the only emotions left in Headquarters are Anger, Fear and Disgust.

Inside Out marks Pixar’s 15th film since changing the landscape of movies with Toy Story back in 1995. The movie currently has a 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with over 20 reviews already in. So it looks as though Pixar has yet another hit on their hands. Which will bring them to 15 incredible movies in 20 years an unprecedented feat in Hollywood.

The Good Dinosaur – November 25th 2015

What if the cataclysmic asteroid that forever changed life on Earth actually missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? This is the world Pixar envisions in their upcoming film The Good Dinosaur. After a traumatic event unsettles a lively Apatosaurus named Arlo , he sets out on a remarkable journey, gaining an unlikely companion along the way, a human boy.

Finding Dory – June 17th 2016

Not much is known yet about the sequel to one of the most beloved Pixar movies of all time. We do know Andrew Stanton, the driving force behind Toy Story, Finding Nemo, & Monsters Inc. will be returning to direct. And that the story will revolve around the feel good character Dory, the ever optimistic Regal Blue Tang, played by Ellen Degeneres. Finding Dory is a sure thing for Pixar & will be expected to open in the 100 million range. If you have kids the start of next summer will be the perfect time to go ahead & start buying all those Clown Fish toys again.

Moana – November 23rd 2016

Disney Animation Studios returns next year after a year-long absence from theaters with Moana. Their last two films have absolutely killed at the box office, Big Hero 6 made an impressive 650 million at the box office being pushed to millions of young boys. Before that, the movie that will never seem to leave children’s minds, Frozen, was released. It started off as a Disney Princess movie for girls, but quickly bridged the gap to all genders & age groups. Frozen made a whopping 1.25 billion dollars at the cinema, to become the highest grossing Animated film of all time.

The Polynesian Moana, will add even more diversity to the ever-growing Disney Princess lineup. The film will be a sweeping, CG-animated adventure about a spirited teenager who sails out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfarer and fulfill her ancestors’ unfinished quest. During her journey, she meets the once-mighty demigod Maui (voiced Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson), and together, they traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous fiery creatures and impossible odds. Sounds right up Disney’s alley.

Zootopia March 4th, 2016

Zootopia also comes from Disney’s Animation Studio, though it is a smaller flick in the vein of The Fantastic Mr. Fox. It’s directed by the creators of Wreck-it Ralph, Tangled & Bolt. In the film we find ourselves in the animal city of Zootopia, following a fast-talking fox who’s trying to make it big. He is forced to go on the lam when he’s framed for a crime he didn’t commit. Zootopia’s top cop, a self-righteous rabbit, is hot on his tail, but when both become targets of a conspiracy, they’re forced to team up and discover even natural enemies can become best friends.

Last nights victory puts Lebron James in rare company as he becomes only the 9th player in history to compete in 5 straight finals. This will no doubt restart the Jordan/James debate. Last night his Cavaliers finished off their sweep of Atlanta with a shellacking, 118 to 88. This may be the end of the playoffs for the Hawks but their future is looking brighter than ever after the having the best season in franchise history. The difference maker this game was the returning Kyrie Irving. The Cavs took the lead early & never looked back. Lebron finished the series averaging a triple-double, an incredible feat.

Tonight’s game could set the final spot in the finals with a win by the Golden State Warriors. Even if they don’t win tonight it is almost assured they will finish off the series on top. No team in the history of the NBA has come back from a 3-0 deficit in the Conference Championships.
