tuesday's children "strange light from the east" 1966-1969

Both sides of all six of this obscure British group's 1966-1968 singles are included on this compilation, which adds a 1969 solo A-side by original Tuesday's Children singer/songwriter Phil Cordell and five previously unreleased tracks. In an essential sense, Tuesday's Children are similar to several other British groups of the time that managed to release several records for different labels without making the charts, or even making much of a reputation among collectors.

Most of the volumes in the extensive History of Texas Garage Bands in the 1960s series are various-artists compilations, but this sixth set is devoted to a single artist, the folk-rocking Sunset Love. Another incongruity is that unless their hometown of Albuquerque, NM, is now somehow within the state of Texas, the band doesn't really belong here at all. (The original recordings were made for, but not released by, the AOK label in Odessa in 1968, thereby justifying the band's inclusion, sort of.) The album's subtitle is similarly misleading, because other than the occasional bit of phased vocal harmony, these 14 songs aren't psychedelia, but straight-up folk-rock with sunshine pop tendencies (think a less-playful Spanky & Our Gang), with earnest lyrics that involve lines like, "You can be part of the change," and song titles like "Innocence Dies Young on Our Street." Yet, for all the potential for sappiness -- and to be honest, nearly every song has at least one or two cringe-worthy lines -- the performances are so sincere and fresh-faced, and the largely acoustic tunes inviting enough, that the album is actually quite listenable. Not an album for the ages, perhaps, but a rare artifact well worth seeking out for sunshine pop and folk-rock fans.

The Baroques formed in 1966 in Milwaukee,Wisconsin. In January 1967 they signed a contract with Chess Records. By June 1967, both the album "Iowa" and single "Mary Jane" were released and banned in the same week. The ban was imposed by some local DJs whose stations directors thought "Mary Jane" was a pro-drug song about marijuana.

The record opens with a bit of fuzzed out distortion, followed by a storm of pounding drums and ringing guitar. The vocals are spot on for a garage rocker and include some backing oohs, aahs and the like. But what really makes "I Need Love" for me is the generous helping of organ, including an excellent break. It gives the song a slightly haunting feel. Pretty cool for an up-tempo banger. It's been comped several times and should be relatively easy to find on CD, if that's your medium of choice.

In 1973 Morris signed to the York record label who gave him the opportunity to release his first and only solo album "Only The Beginning". Production duties were again handed over to his friend and collaborator Atkins. I've never heard this album but I have heard a few songs and confirm that they are great. Two of these songs "When It Come's To Love" and "See Through My Mind" have appeared on the later volumes of Jorgen Johannsen's fab Fading Yellow compilations and are of the ultra melodic, lush sounding pop type that we have come to expect from JJ's FY's!

Over You was written by rhythm guitar player Wayne Henninger. The lead singer was Jerry Pierce, Bass player was Rick Stiller. Jim Godwin lead and Rich Franks drums. All but Rick Stiller went to Northeast High School. The Flipside of the record was "Fishtracks, Green & Purple" written by Clyde McTavish (joke name) it was an instrumental with an almost drum solo by Rich Franks.

It's somewhat well documented that music producers Kasenetz & Katz regularly sought out a few groups that had a healthy local following, changed their name and image, and proceeded to transform them into the next bubblegum rock and roll band. Though not as well remembered as The 1910 Fruitgum Company or Ohio Express, Lt. Garcia's Magic Music Box found themselves on the same path as those other K&K acts. Before joining the K&K roster, however, HJ Boyle's band was rather successful locally as, first, The Echoes and, later, The Scoundrels.

The flip 'Whevever' has a strange drum tap and a more or less spoken vocal part. The lyrics verge on the corny side. The singer dig's his girl and he ain't ever gonna stray. Well, I suppose he was just a kid, just wait until she starts to nag him to do the washing up.

This group was from Prescott, population 3500. The group, led by Hershel Cannon, traveled 100 miles to Jaggars Recording Studio in Little Rock to record this fuzzed out gem in the Fall of 1968.

In my opinion this record is one of the best ever releases in the 60s garage genre, both sides are absolutely amazing pieces of music, the 45 is a total killer, the A-side 'Now That You Know' with its beyond genius garage-folk jangle and the B-side 'She's Mine' with its ear breaking fuzztone guitar and snotty attitude.

Sway, the sophomore LP from San Diego-to-New York shoegazers Tape Deck Mountain, attempts a kind of hypnotic induction, reeling you in with its mesmeric churn and plumes of reverb. When it works, it takes hold completely, engulfing your attention, encroaching on your thought processes. When it doesn't, well, you may just find yourself getting verrry sleepy.
